This is the kind of thinking that makes you not appreciate this season.  Losing Clemente could destroy us.

Or maybe this year is our 98 and next year is our 03.

If so, when do we choke?  I really hope we make it as deep in the tourney as we did in 1988 before this happens.

No.  There is no possible letdown this year that could match the letdown of 1998.

Elite 8 or sweet 16, and we'll be all like, "BFD!  WE'LL BE AWESOME FOOOORRRRREEEEEEVERRRRR!!!!!"

Even imagining a 16 over 1, we didn't expect to be in the mix for a national title.  In 1998, we did.  So, the let down this year can't be as great.

What would the hoops equivalent of '98 be?  I think of it as losing the regional final even though we were only a minutes away from the national title game.

Humiliating, but really that would be more in kind with Pasco than 98.

Can't imagine a letdown like 88 either.
Will prolly be more like 80 after the Louisville game. Second round OT loss to eventual NC on horse's ass shot only made me more  :excited: for the next year.

To be 98 do we need to lose to a 15/14 seed or lose to the 8/9 in the conference tourney leading us to a 3 seed game we lose?  Or lose to TTU and MU and get 5th in conference tourney?

can you imagine an up by 16 on Kentucky to with a chance to go to the FF with 9 minutes left only to give it all away and lose by 6.    i can imagine a very real world in which this scenario would exist.
Title: Re: Is this our 1998?

I don't think they are comparable.

1988 was a most brutal live experience in Detroit for me.  After knocking off Purdue, I was certain the Cats were destined.  For greatness.  Instead it was devastation.  I've lived through them all.  1973 losing to Larry Kenon and Larry Finch led Memphis State Tigers. (they annihilated KSU)

The Darrell Winston tip in that didn't count against Marquette. The 1975 Syracuse EE game  that went to OT.  Chuckie went off for 35.

I don't really care how we flame out.  I want it to be spectacular.

The equivelant would be blowing a double digit lead with 6 minutes to go in the Final Four against a team like Vandy.  Yep, that would be about the equivelant.

Say we win out in the reg. season. 26-4 and prob in the top 5....

then we win the phillips 66....  29-4 and most def a #1 seed.

we win handily all the way to the elite 8 and run into a 5 seed like let's say Butler

we run out to a 15 point lead against them and have the game well in hand....

down by 10 or so with around 2:00 to play they go "Nebraska" on us and start draining threes

we lose.......... :bawl:

We're going to have to go off the court for this one.  What about a plane crash on the way to the first round?  No survivors.

If this is 1998, who plays the Michael Bishop roll? Most talented player, who carries the team, but who's so incredibly dumb that you know the hammer is gonna drop at some point.

I'm gonna say CK.

Losing the Big 12 chamiopship game to A&M, getting shafted with a 6 seed, then promptly losing in the first round to the last Big 10 team in...a team led by a midget that will become NBA MVP.  Drawing a blank on which team that might be.

except their final shot is a 3/4 hail mary that bounces around the rim for an eternity before dropping in.  (or the shot is ours, bounces for eternity, and rolls out)

This might be closest, though I like chum's plane crash idea too.  Basically, you have to blow the conference title in the process or else there is no comparison.  So I'm thinking final game of the regular season, we've miraculously tied ku in the standings, No. 1 seed virtually assured, we lead the Haverhills by 15 with 5 to play, and a meteor hits the OOD.
