TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Kansas State Basketball is hard => Topic started by: Dugout DickStone on April 04, 2011, 04:53:43 PM

Do they join UNC, Duke, Kentucky and UCLA as the Bluest of the Blueblood college basketball programs?*
* Apologies to Indiana, Syracuse and Michigan State, they are just outside the top 5.
-
That pretty much puts them next to Duke IMO. 3 titles over a span of only 13 seasons, would definitely have a chance to match the 4 that Duke got over 20 seasons.
-
I don't think you can, because UCONN has only done all of this with one coach....We need to wait and see how they do once Calhoun is gone.
-
Solid point. Carolina's consistency over the past decade has been pretty great, but Uconn and Duke have been just so uber good on the big stage.
-
Wonder where you currently have Florida ranked?
If it wasn't for Butler, they could have made it 3 'ships in 6 years. They have to be top 7 right? Just behind Indiana perhaps.

Duke?

Duke?
Duke was very good before Coach K, he took them to another level. Their program was identical to K-State's before Coach K arrived.
-
lol at uconn equaling what took "traditional power" kansas 6 decades to accomplish
-
Everything about this game is pissing me off. What a fabulous way to crown a NC. A single elimination 6 game tournament. It's the anti NBA playoffs, which I can say without a doubt the best team always wins, and isn't that the point.
-
Please don't muck up my thread about one of the top 5 national powers with dumb ku crap. Any team that can only win a title once every 25 years doesn't belong in the conversation.
-
Didn't wanna start a new UConn thread, but....
DK's look-a-like

Not really. I knew it was done on purpose, as I stated in my previous post.

State your case, because if the measuring stick in actual championships, the only one it can compete with is Michigan State...
Now, I guess ku has won a ton of regular season games but that counts a usually weak non-con and a conference that looks to be a little behind the BE.
You wouldn't compare ku to uconn or duke, right?

Any university that hangs up Helms title banners as the equivalent of NCAA titles doesn't deserve to be taken seriously.

Weak non-con schedule? We had the 10th ranked SOS this year and the #1 RPI.
Sigh.. I can't believe I'm seriously going to state my case for this, but I suppose I shall.
3 National Championships (6th most). 5 Runner-Ups(5th most). 13 Final Fours(4th most). 22 Straight tournament appearances (most). 54 Conference Titles (7 in a row, most). 25 Conference Tournament Titles. 2,037 all-time wins (2nd most). 92 seasons with a winning record (most). 10 seasons with 30+wins (3rd most). 4 seasons with 35+wins (t-most). 20 first team all-americans (most).
Now go ahead and laugh all you want about us only having those 3 championships, but it is what it is and I am very proud to be able to claim even 3 (because of how the tournament format is set up in a onee-and-done fashion, not an excuse just stating that it doesn't necessarily pin the top teams in the NC game, see: Tonight) and especially one in the last 5 years.
Also, compare them to uconn? That's pretty humorous actually. I'll applaud that.

Ugh, I hate explaining stuff to ku fans.
The resume you rattled off isn't in the top 5. You have to win more than one title a generation, or have some sick number like UCLA to be a blue blood. repeat after me: once every 25 years make you a nifty little program. Not one of the big boys. ku couldn't carry UCONN's jock in an oversized wheelbarrow.

Got to give this guy some credit for not trying to claim the Helms "championships." KU's "resume" is probably on par w/ Michigan St or UF, I guess.

No I didnt. Yeah he made the game, but what did he do for the basketball program itself outside being the only coach in school history with a losing record.

Uconn = 3 NC's
Kansas = 3 NC's
And as you stated before, its all about the championships, right?
-
And I was introducing Uconn as a true BB. By winning multiple recently, they are now past ku.

I don't have time to look it up, but hasn't Roy Williams been crowned National Champion twice, at North Carolina in the last 6 years, with virtually the same resume? If you could win 2 National Championships in 6 years at 1 school....that would really make a 24 year coaching career worthwhile, IMO.

Before winning their 3rd one in 2008, I had KU on about the same level as Oklahoma State. 2 NC's but so long ago that most of their fans weren't even alive when it happened.
I feel you TrueBlue, it's a little unfair, but we are definitely in a "What have you done for me lately" society.

this is the national perception. The '08 win moved ku into the second level behind the real big timers. Now, Uconn has moved from that second level, to the big timers. Not exactly fair, but these are the times we live in.

That is frikkin amazing. Even as I watched I didn't believe it. Especially as shitty defense Kemba plays. But he stepped it up last night. Always seems to be in the right spot to get a long rebound. Uncanny.

Most of the "who is the best" analysis that I have read typically starts in 1985 with the increase to 64 teams in the NCAA tournament.
KU is "in the conversation" because they have two titles since 1985, albeit lower on the list than UCONN, as Limestone points out.
Additionally, I think everyone would agree that all titles before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are not worthy of inclusion in ANY list...and if they are, it's typically by a racist...but sometimes by a special needs person.

special needs = validation?

Then you'll certainly agree to omit the inclusion of "championships" before a giant portion of country's population were legally ensured the right to participate, right?

Sadly, that also means that KSU will have to omit the inclusion of our 1959 national title when we finished that season ranked #1 in the country. I know it sucks but it just goes to show we aren't just picking on KU around here. You have to be objective about these things.
