Title: Basketball practice facilty
Post by: fr@ck me on February 17, 2011, 03:58:02 PM
The practice facilty bid today.  MW Builders was low bidder at $12.147 million, the budget was $14.6 million I believe.  Sounds like we have a new facility and if those numbers are correct we will have restrooms on the upper deck of the football.  Those bid today as well.  Should have enough money to do both.   :emawkid:

Why is the nubb facility going to be way more expensive than ours when they don't even care about hoops? Expensive=better.

This just in, our practice facility is going to be a cheap piece of garbage and will not even impress tucks.

Good Afternoon Wildcat fans!

First off, congratulations to both Coach Martin and Coach Patterson for great basketball wins this week. The men’s team showed great courage Monday night with a tremendous win over No. 1 KU in front of a terrific and intense Bramlage Coliseum crowd, marking the program’s fourth all-time victory against a top-ranked team (and second in as many years).

Then last night the women’s team handily defeated Colorado, 78-51, for the 799th win in program history! With our next victory K-State will become just the 13th school in women’s basketball history and second in the Big 12 to record 800 wins!

Our basketball programs have a proud heritage of success and we have talked quite a bit over the last 20 months about making sure we continue to build our infrastructure to ensure that we can enhance our national position in the future.

Today we believe that we have taken a big step forward in that regard. As you read this letter, the construction bids for our proposed Basketball Training Facility and east side upper deck addition of restrooms at LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium have been opened and we are very encouraged with the initial indications. The total estimated pre-bid cost of these two projects was approximately $22 million, which includes $20 million for the training facility and $2 million for the restroom addition. Pre-bid construction-only costs were estimated at $15 million and $1.5 million, respectively. Once we have fully examined the bids and the process has been finalized, we anticipate moving quickly to secure a construction contract. We would anticipate then announcing more details of the project timeline, including information regarding a groundbreaking ceremony.

I cannot express enough our appreciation to our fans nationwide for their participation and support of these projects. Because of the grass-roots support of K-Staters through the Ahearn Fund we are definitely making progress towards our goal of providing a world-class student-athlete experience here at Kansas State.  As a reminder, March 1 is the deadline to return your 2011 Ahearn Fund pledge form. Receiving pledges by March 1 helps us accurately project revenue for planning and budgeting purposes and enables the department to operate in a fiscally responsible manner.

Pledges for the Basketball Training Facility are approaching the $15 million mark. Wildcat fans who wish to do so can still make specific gifts for the BTF by clicking here.

That’s it for today. Baseball is off to California today to open their season, while women’s basketball is heading to Lincoln looking for win No. 800 Saturday night. We’ll see you this weekend as we host track and field, tennis and men’s basketball Friday, Saturday and Sunday right here in Manhattan.

Thank you for your continued support of K-State student-athletes.

Go Cats!

Yeah, part of me is like "we're just getting a sweet deal 'cause the construction industry is on the ropes", but deep down, I know we'll get a facility with tin siding and concrete floors.

   at some of you.

Nothing was cut out, or dumbed down that I am aware of.   It's just a buyers market in the construction market right now.   The Oklahoma NBA team had their practice facility come in $2 million under budget and they got exactly what was originally designed.

Unless something has changed radically in the last month, we're getting a facility exactly as it appears on the kstate website.

Dax is right.  Also, of note, construction project budgets include two numbers, Hard Costs(construction related) and Soft Costs(Architects, engineers, permitting, rezoning, land acquisition, studies, ect).  Usually when you hear a project is $x, X actual includes both hard and soft cost.  So the $20M(or whatever) usually includes more than what MW Builders would be supplying in this case.

I didn't suggest anything has been cut or eliminated. I'm glad there are so many out of work contractors and we are going to get a good deal on this thing. My  stems from never being happy with the facility designs in the first place, added to the fact that Nebraska is prepared to spend more on theirs than we are. It's ridiculous. I have a gut feeling that ours will not compare favorably to others in the conference. We are K-State.

And you are not paying attention. I am expressing my opinion. In the end, maybe it will compare favorably with other facilities and that I hope I am wrong about. But otherwise I DO know what I'm talking about when I say I am probably going to be displeased with the final product, no matter what. I have seen the renderings. Even if they WERE awesome I would still be pissed. Feeling depressed and hating my school is what I love about K-State. That's what you don't get.

That is what the architect is for.  They specify exactly what you can use on the project.  So if they don't like cheap chinese limestone then you can't use it no matter what.  they are building at the right time because material prices are starting to go back up.  They are lucky to get it locked in at this price.  They still have the option to value engineer in some upgrades if they want.

unless Currie misspoke, the numbers do NOT indicate the project came in under budget.  rather, Currie is discussing the TOTAL budget ($20mil) versus the CONSTRUCTION budget ($15mil).

The difference being the soft costs - design fees, financing costs, preliminary expenses (such as renderings, etc.), contingencies, etc.

If M&W is awarded the bid, then the construction bids came in over $2.4 million under budget.    Those who would know have told me that if this bid had come out a few years ago, during much better times for construction companies, that the specs on this bid likely would have driven bids in the $15-$16 million plus range.

I built a two story YMCA not too long ago with a huge pool, lazy river, hot tub, full sized court, elevated running track, and all the other crap a huge Y has and it only cost $14.7M(total cost, hard and soft).

$20M should be a pretty decent facility.

Quotes on the restrooms were around $1 million.  they will be getting both for what they were planning on for the bball.  they can either keep themselves from going further in debt or use the left over money to get started on the west side entry.

Definitely a buyers market right now on the construction side right now. We haven't seen much change in design fees on the engineering side and we are super busy right now. What we are seeing is a faster pace for the production of 80% complete design drawings so contractors can have tighter pricing. This is a change to more coordination on the front end instead of waiting to address things in the field.  All that being said the bid numbers being thrown around doesn't raise any concern about what the finished product will be.

Do you think we got rich by bringing gold shovels for everybody?  Ok, so we did but we are stopping now.

On another note, due to this downturn and the terrific deals available in the construction field, goEMAW is opening up submittals for it's North American headquarters.  Post renderings here.

And let's keep it fair.  Do not offer bribes or kickbacks for this project that will ultimately dwarf NBAF in size, scope and security.

It's too bad the Vatican is made out of polished marble rather than natural stone... otherwise that'd be a great building to model your BBPF after. Bummer.

“When I saw the design, I really liked it because it wasn't done on the cheap,” Johnson said. “It will be here 20 years from now, and it will still be one of the best facilities in whatever conference we're in.”

Your fiji water experience will be ruined when a wind comes out of the north from those fields north of the stadium complex...

also, most of you don't know how much material was donated as a "gift-in-kind".  this means they get to maintain a lot of original design intent and materiality because it is being donated by various companies/manufacturers.

If you don't see the live webcam, it is probably because too many people are trying to access the feed at the same time.
Give it a few minutes, then try again.

We did this on a job I built downtown.  Had the cam guy capture an image every day for the duration of the job(18 months) and then we put all the daily shots together at the end.  Could watch the entire 18mo build in about 4 minutes.

Really cool stuff.

At my firm we build everything in Revit even if the architect/contractor doesn't require/provide a 3-d/bim model. Surely this thing was done in Revit, why can't they just release a model as a ".dwf" file? Would be way better than a webcam
