Post by: CNS on February 15, 2011, 09:15:20 AM
was supposed to be a one time thing.  Coming back next year.  Hopefully I can try some then.

I should really give boulevard another chance.  I pretty much hate every wheat beer I've ever tried and that's all I ever think of when I think boulevard.  But a chocolate ale sounds good.

Dear Friends,
Holy cow, did we ever misjudge your feelings towards chocolate in beer. Before the Chocolate Ale
storm hit, it was to us just another in a series of Smokestack seasonal and limited release offerings, a
fun collaboration with local chocolatier Christopher Elbow. We packaged the same amount of
Chocolate Ale as we had those previous Smokestack releases, roughly 19,200 bottles and 350 1/6
barrel (5.2 gallon) kegs.
You might say that the response to the beer took us by surprise, but that wouldn’t do it justice. No,
we were blown away by the overwhelming reaction to Chocolate Ale, especially in Kansas City.
We’re still not entirely sure how or why it happened. Maybe it was just a bunch of things coming
together:  a tasty and intriguing beer; a strong local connection; a gradual but steadily building buzz as
we waited (and waited, and waited some more) for Federal label approval; the just-before-Valentine’s
Day release, when we finally got the go-ahead from the government; and finally, the impact of social
networks fueling demand in real time.
However or why-ever it happened, it was a tempest that left most everyone — from brewery staff,
to distributors, to retailers, to you, our loyal customers — confused and frustrated. It’s probably not
much consolation, but the brewery's 90+ employees encountered the same challenges trying to find
Chocolate Ale, since we don’t hold back any limited release beers. Most were, like so many of our
customers, unsuccessful. We will learn from this experience and, we hope, better anticipate demand
of future releases.
To those of you who searched in vain and were unable to find a bottle or pour, please accept our
sincere apologies.
Chocolate Ale was going to be just a one-time, one-off release. But due to the overwhelming
feedback we've received, and after much internal discussion and debate, we’re pleased to announce
that it will be back for next Valentine’s Day.
We appreciate your understanding, and thank you for your continued support.

Sounds like something a person who orders no onions on food would drink.

I tried the two places closest to me and struck out both times.

Picked up a Fort Collins Choc Ale at the second location.   Was not delish.

Didn't know they had a Chocolate ale. I knew they had a Chocolate stout. it sucked.

Yeah, memory is bad.  It was a stout.

Found a few at Grand Slam liquor last Wednesday. Everywhere else was out. They raised to price to $17 a bottle cause they knew the demand.  I still bought it. Very good and probably the most unique beer I've ever tried, but not the best beer I've ever had. My friend showed up at another liquor store looking for some and people were camped out waiting for the delivery truck.  :users:

I refuse to believe that it was that good.  Blvd has good beers but some people in kc are Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) about how good they are.

Some d00d on my twitter feed said something about one bottle going for $325(or something like that) at a KU auction this weekend.

Crazy

Agreed.

I love their unfiltered wheat, but the rest of their stuff is only so/so in my book.

I'm going to try some next weekend - had a friend put aside a few of them for me.  I agree, they probably aren't that great.

Also agree w/ you on KC folk overrating Boulevard.  They have a few beers i'd put up against anything (tank 7 being one of them) but the Wheat and Pale Ale are gmafb overrated.

Tank 7 and 2 jokers are good.  I don't know if they still make 2 jokers or not though

Tried some at flying saucer. I thought it was bad. The flavors didn't mix well. Like steak sauce and cereal, they are good on their own but not together. I'm not opposed to chocolate and beer though, boulevard just didn't pull it off. A couple good chocolate beers are youngs double chocolate stout and southern tier imperial choklat stout.

The smokestack stuff is pretty good.

I like the Irish Ale too.
