The top Big 12 football programs in 2030
« on: June 03, 2023, 10:13:10 PM »
My guesses (not in order)

UCF - Malzahn gets them humming if he stays
KSU - KK is still here, hopefully
TCU - location, school commitment
Baylor - location, school commitment
Houston - location, school commitment

I would probably replace Houston with Texas Tech.  But i can’t disagree with that list if the coaching staffs stay relatively the same.

I would put BYU in place of Houston. I also want to put OSU on this list but not sure where. Maybe instead of UCF but just barely.

I can't imagine Malzahn sticking around with any success.  I think he'll get offered and take a lower-tier SEC job.

I never think Baylor will last but they keep making home-run hires.

I think it's too early to call Aranda a home run hire, 2 out of his 3 seasons as head coach he's been under .500. If Aranda is a home run, Matt Campbell is a walk off grand slam. I think both are solid coaches, SLTH types.

I thought about adding BYU, but I don’t think being in a bigger conference does much for their reach. Mormons already know all about them…this doesn’t make Mormon kids rethink going to BYU.  Heck, their increased profile might make more non-Mormons more aware of their unique campus culture (e.g. can get kicked out of school for having premarital sex with beautiful Mormon girls, etc), which may not be good for recruiting.

Tech vs Houston is one where the test of time will be interesting.  I am betting that more kids will want to play in Houston than in remote west Texas.  Houston has at least one really eccentric billionaire donor who seems willing to close the gap on facilities.

Over time, my bet is on Houston.

I don't know this, but I'd guess while Tech doesn't have a Fertitta, they have more millionaire donors to the athletic department.

My coworkers wife is from Iowa and played softball at BYU. She apparently had no idea about all the crazy rules and just figured it had some religious affiliation like a TCU or Notre Dame.

They just need to know how the Mormon kids manage to have sexual relations without breaking the "rules"

Yes. They just need to soak it all in.
