Long time lurker here. I didn't see a thread yet so I figured this would be a good way to get that awkward first post out of the way.
Stillwater vs. Tulsa. Just turned it on. OSU looks beatable.
Go Cats. #FAMILY
-
OSU meh.
Ohio State woof.

PJ struggling a bit vs Buffalo. He seems intent on establishing inside zone, but the running game looks weak right now.
-
Opening the season with a confy game? Why?
-
Did Barret just become a IV this year?
-
Tulsa was pretty decent last year. OSU's offense is very, very good. We will have to Snyderball the crap out of them to have a chance. Ohio State is doing typical Ohio State things, and playing down to their competition again.
-
The Buckeyes just aren't very good.
-
The Buckeyes just aren't very good.
They've done this so many times under Urban. If they actually lose this game I'll be shocked.
-
I hope they lose. A lot.
-
Get mumped Indiana dorks
-
What a stupid sport. Is it Kentucky Basketball time yet?
-
What do we think about the Ohio State and OU game next week?? OU has a better QB and a better OL. But OSU is better everywhere else, including having a coach that has coached more than a game prior to this.

Good grief. Mayfield is not better than Barrett.

What makes you say that? Barrett looked pedestrian last night and gives me little reason to think he has improved much at all as a passer.

Mayfield is much better than Barrett. Talent around him? TBD
-
OSUs QB is apparently Barrett IV

I don't know why I find that as stupid as I do.

I'm wondering how much of the game v. Indiana was simply looking ahead. Not saying Urban Meyer would allow that but I could see them spending way more time prepping for OU, and hen just trying to keep it vanilla vs. Indiana as possible and that didn't end up going as well to plan.
I do hope though the game is barn burner and now an tOSU teabagging like last year
-
The matchup I'm most looking forward to seeing in the tOSU vs. OU game is OU's OL against tOSU's DL. Both units are among the best in the country.
-
Barrett had a subpar half in the first game of the season...big deal. He also lit it up in the 2nd half.
The QB matchup is a wash in the tOSU/OU game, at best for OU.
-
If by lit it up you mean threw 8 yard passes his receivers turned into long TDs. Take a lap TownieBuckeye
-
Townie is such a brown noser.
-
Well Mizzou may not even win their state.
-
Peeking in at Missouri State (used to be called SWoMo) at Missouri, and I have to note either SWoMo is the rough-ridin'est rush the ball down your throat team of all time, OR Mizzou's rush defense might be a bit suspect. Currently 21-20 MSU still in the first quarter. Missouri's team speed on O is far superior to MS, but their d is quite awful. Could be a long year in SEClad for the Tiggers.
-
Just to add, the stands are pretty empty in Columbia all things considered. Playing in-state team for only the 2nd time, and first time since the 1920s. How bad would it be if Bear fans didn't show up?
With the sparse gold and black in the stands intermixed with old concrete, I was having Emporia State football game flashbacks from their bad old days.
-
Lol Texas.

Oh Baylor...
Pondering how West Virginia has to feel out on an island in this conference. Maybe the conference can switch out Baylor for Liberty. We add Jerry Fallwell's Baptist Notre Dame and subtract the Texan Notre Shame.

I like that Baylor lost. I don't like that Alabama won.
-
Washington State's QB is 20/20 175 yards and 2 TD at the half. Wow
-
Howard, 45 point dog, wins at UNLV. Biggest point spread upset ever.

Wow, who knew they even played football

Great thread. Looking forward to following the season here.

I don't know why everyone is consoling cW, they screwed all of us, Dana is a lame.

Honestly after OU gets destroyed next weekend the Big 12 should be eliminated from the playoffs. The rest of the teams just won't have the schedule to justify inclusion.

See y'all next year. :buh-bye:

What fanbase should feel worse, Texas, Texas A&M, or Baylor? LOLZ at them all.

For fucks sake, Sumlin! How in the hell do you blow a 34 point lead?! That is grounds for termination.

Hurricane wreck havoc...
Texas lose to Maryland, at home...
aTm loses to UCLA... blowing a 34 point lead...
T & P's.

What I enjoy and what Shaggy always makes fun of, is this making of lists of guys who will all immediately take the job if asked.

Probably A&M. The other two were bad bad losses, but the Aggies' total collapse was something above that. I was glad to see UCLA win.

Similar to the amount of good coaches that are "huge ku guys" and are "begging to come to ku"

prolly so but Udub didn't beat anyone last year - Stanford's win over the wild wild cats was maybe the best noncon win for the whole PAC 12

I'm all about that Rambling Wreck tonight.

Tennessee after Fulmer is very similar to Texas after Mack.

I hate going for two there, it makes no sense.
-
I agree. Very stupid.
-
Why's that? They were going to have to go for 2 in the next OT and to that point Tennessee had been moving the ball with impunity. No idea why you thought their defense would suddenly stiffen and keep Tennessee from scoring. I liked going for the win
-
Why's that? They were going to have to go for 2 in the next OT and to that point Tennessee had been moving the ball with impunity. No idea why you thought their defense would suddenly stiffen and keep Tennessee from scoring. I liked going for the win
It was dumb because they had to go for two on the next possession. If they missed the two point conversion in triple overtime, they still have several chances to win the game or force another overtime. They miss the two in the second overtime and it results in instant death. That was a very high risk at an unnecessary point.
-
I'm fine with going for 2. The GT QB was feeling himself too much though, and i feel ike the D knew he would try to be the man, & keep.
-
I have no problem with going for 2 in that situation and would probably do it myself.
-
Love the decision just not the playcall. Everyone loves giving their qb multiple options on 2 point tries but GT had a ton of success running the QB counter trey. Fake that option and counter back the other way
-

Guess I disagree. Given the choice of picking up 2 yds for the win or kicking the PAT and then seeing who messes up first, id rather see if I could pick up 2 yds and end it
-
Tennessee - Ga Tech was fun game to watch, but man all those mistakes were pretty costly, right?
-

Yes, and I love watching that play. That QB is a stud at running Johnson's offense.
K-State has run a version of QB counter trey, but ours has always been off of sprint out pass.
-
I would like to slap all the people involved with scheduling of games this weekend. All the great games are on at the same time.

Boise State @ Washington State game is pretty fun.
Also frustrating. Both teams and coaching staffs are doing some incredibly stupid stuff and just look like kinda bad teams. I've watched a ton of these Washington State late games in the last few years, and I really want Wazzu to be good so I can be happy for Leach, but.....this is a team who just can't really get their offense clicking. I bet it's really frustrating to be a WSU fan.

I know exactly what you mean. I've thought about this from that angle as well. I may have some failings in my thinking but I don't remember hating on a black athlete walking on and avenging a loss from the previous year and me hating on him for showing the other team up on their field.
I'll admit I may be wrong. I just couldn't come up with a scenario where my line of thinking on this has been different for a black athlete.
-
I also dispise Ohio State and Bama more than any other college program that is good. So it felt nice for a big 12 school to put them down
-
He's a 26-year old Napoleonic bitch without a brain. I can't wait for the Cats to much his heisman delusions.

I think everyone saying "Lincoln Riley is a great coach and this is proof!" needs to wait and see what he can do without Baker Mayfield. Baker is this team. I'm thinking the next few years after Baker leaves will be the true test and will show Lincoln having some growing pains.

That's a hfbiq hot take right there

As much as I do think Mayfield's a punk ass bitch like wetwillie said, the dude has proven himself to be a road warrior w/o much of an equal in CFB this year so far.
Shutting him down will be easily the hardest thing this defense will have to do this year. Hopefully we find something on him a al Landry. Though Landry was a loser and Mayfield is a winner.

Man. My boss is going to be all depressed this week. He doesn't handle tOSU losses well.
Maybe I'll plant an oU flag on his desk.
My boss is an OSU grad too (I work in Ohio) and I gave him some nice little jabs today. It was fun.

Let's go Illinois!
-
I would love to see a South Florida vs Oregon bowl game this year.
-
Love it when failed coaches Charlie and Lovie fight it out on the field. But seriously, I would like to see USF & UCF in the Big XII. Would make it easier to get Florida State and Miami to join in the future. It will kill them to see Big XII and SEC teams making more money per year; so when the time comes they will join the Big XII. That would make the Big XII consist of four Florida and four Texas teams. Also, we would be the highest rated conference in the P5.

Gundy's appearance hurts the image of our conference.

A lot of fun games on today, guys!

There are a lot of fun games. Great day to be lazy all afternoon and evening.
-
Sweaty Gary trots a freshman kicked out for his first ever attempt, it's a 50 yarder. The kid nails the field goal but it doesn't count because Sweaty Gary apparently wanted to ice his own kicker. After the time out the holder couldn't even hold the snap, SMU ball driving deep into TCU territory, already up 16-7.
He's gross, we dodged such a huge bullet.

CFB is crazy. VTech beats WVU then WVU pounds East Carolina and now VTech is losing to ECU.

I see that Baylor lost. God is good.

Got to love Mizzou. Getting their butts kicked by Purdue, and when they occasionally make a decent play, their players posture and pose like they are on the route to the national championship.
I guess their kids can't read a scoreboard.
Side note, saw in the KC Star today that Mizzou is no longer the primary choice for Missouri HS graduates, it is now Missouri State. So sad.

Well, it will look better in 2019 when their new "expansion" goes through to put in a luxury endzone, but cuts seating by 6,000.
They added seating no long ago, and they talk was further expansion to fill the stadium will all the $EC fans. Apparently, that needs isn't as strong as it was once projected.

I realize that. But just as the football team is becoming a dumpster fire, the issues at the university sure can't be helping in putting fannies in the seats of making kids put Mizzou at the top of the list of where to play.

I have just resigned myself to the fact that WVU will have to outscore opponents to stand a chance. Only game the defense has shown any sign of life was against VMI, and that was the Mountaineer Super Bowl. They'll crap down their leg against quality B12 teams and finish ~5th/6th, at best. :shrugs:

I know comparative scores aren't the best metric. But based on the Vandy game, I think Alabama probably has a better team this year.

I'm strugglin' to find some sympathy for Mizzou fans. The stadium appeared more empty during the early 3rd quarter than those tweets at the end of the game last week. Plus, they are playin' Auburn, one would hope the hordes of SEC fans would help puts some butts in those seats.

Was thinking the same thing, but it goes both ways. KU and maybe ISU should be an easy game, but I don't think anyone else will be. We could win em all or lose em all.
-

I often feel the same.

Kliff should probably start packing his bags
Interesting time to make this observation
-
Kliff may be their Paul Rhodes. He's well liked at home and seems to do just enough each year to give the fans hope for next season. If he gets canned it would probably have just as much to do with Leach building another winning program at Wazzu.
-
If he gets canned it would probably have just as much to do with Leach building another winning program at Wazzu.
Explain to me how this makes any sense at all. This is Leach's seventh year at Wazzu and 17th year overall. Kliff also has a much better record at this point at Tech than Leach did.
-

Opposite trajectories. David Beatty is the only thing keeping Kliff from being the Big 12's worst coach. No program interested in competing for a conference championship would keep him as their coach.

if our secondary keeps playing off the ball and giving up big plays we get taken behind the shed in two of those games. i still will never understand it.

This is a fantastic argument for firing him last year. They are improved despite losing a 10 draft pick at QB. They're more likely than not to make a bowl game, which would be his third in five years. That's good enough to keep your job at 8 schools in the Big 12. OSU and K-State will probably fire their next coach for something like that and it would be a mistake.
-
My point is it wouldn't really be based on logic. Fans will see Leach having the success they want and they'll think they should be able to get another coach at least that good since they had one before.

Right, that was prime during my college time and we never really had much of a chance in our home games. If he came in like Baylor in 2011 than he'd say something I'm sure.
Also, it doesn't surprise me that Oregon is the loudest in the Pac 12, I think you can auto disqualify all 4 Cal based teams, OSU can be out for now since they aren't good. I could see the Arizona schools being loud if they are good but to a point.
Really, I get a strong feeling most Pac football fans aren't as rabid and numerous as other conferences.

We'll see what happens the next two home games but we haven't had a classically great home crowd since Auburn.

Really, I get a strong feeling most Pac football fans aren't as rabid and numerous as other conferences.
I always thought Washington had the reputation of being loud and crazy.
-
Boring football teams like Kstate have a hard time getting the crowd going.
-
Good grief, how bad are we? Vanderbilt getting it handed to them by Georgia.
-
OU's defense is sucky

Luke, I think it's well established that we were pretty bad that night.

Vandy is awful. Good grief.

Uh OU
-
To be fair, their wasn't many chances for the Bill to be loud vs Leach. We scraped out a win in 2000, then Tech won the final 5 games vs us with Leach as coach. Most were blow outs.

Did Isu bring a flag?

The ku @ isu game is going to be epic next week
-
The little Boomer inside me is confused.

Watch KU win that for the ultimate in transitive wins

Big 12 is wide open fellas.
Although, man. I'd give us a 10% chance of a playoff team again this year.
-
Wow
-
Did Isu bring a flag?
That would have been the icing. Shame they didn't do it.

If KU beats ISU and tOSU ends up winning it all, I think they hang a banner, no?

For the health of the conference, it's probably not good. I'm not gonna over dramatize it, but we need someone in the conference to be be in the playoffs more years than not. TCU, OSU, and even OU still have a shot though.
-
TCU couldn't even sell out? So glad we grabbed them instead of Louisville...
-
I hate TCU so much, compete trash program that does nothing for this conference.

It's amazing for the health of the conference. The Big 12 is full of good teams playing good, competitive games. The SEC and ACC are conferences with two good teams each and a bunch of trash.

Yeah. But KSU in particular is 209% out if the playoff picture.

I think there are three good SEC teams, but I could be wrong

That's the weird state of things right now. Big 12 features some of the best games to watch and has lucrative tv deals, yet the conference suffers from perceptions that it's always on the edge of collapsing.

I wonder how much their coach costs.

Lmao @ Kenny Trill

O I forgot about the dumbass championship game. Oh well.
-
Good for Iowa state, that looks like fun
-
I do believe OU will win it in the end, but ISU is a fun watch. Makes you wonder what could happen if you bring in a hungry young coach.
-
Arrowhead North is rocking.
-
Side note: really looking forward to the gems thread after we are inexplicably beat them.
-
All you have to do is watch isu's postgame celebration to know they're still isu and will still find a way to lose to us.
-
O I forgot about the dumbass championship game. Oh well.
Again, if we have to have it, how great would it be if the structure was where the 1st place finisher (even if by tiebreaker) picks their opponent from any team in the conference?

Only 1 win between Baylor, us, and WVU? I'm curious, if you want to share, who you have as their likely W. It seems like they're ahead of us and Baylor. OSU seems manic and WVU might have tossed in the towel by then.

Ohio State is getting beat down by Iowa.

bedlam, wow. defense optional. the winner is gonna legit score 60+. reminds me of ou/tech last year where both teams just said "eff it" and went ham on offense with no respect for how their defenses would hold up.

What a comeback

Currently in 2nd OT and ESPN is reporting Frost to Nebraska. I'm sure that's making for a great fan experience in stadium right now.

Oh yeah. He had tears before McShay even asked a question.

My man Lane was tweeting at College Gameday 70 minutes before his game kicked off.
I mean honestly if he wasn't ready by then he'd be screwed anyway. what does a HC really need to do at that point? what a guy!
I wasn't complaining, marveling. Although I'm guessing my mans wouldn't let his players do the same.

Who do we want to win to win this SEC game if we are rooting for chaos?
-

It's win and you're in, so if you're looking for chaos you want Georgia to win so that Arkansas can go after Malzahn right away.

Georgia winning is the path that makes the most difficult sell for the committee to justify putting alabama in. Combined with an OSU loss imo that creates the most amusing situation in how the committee handles the playoff selection.

Hornibrook's noodle arm makes it moot, kinda like when Ertz's was Hertz

That missed PI that would have offset the holding call was probably some nice ammo for conspiracy theorists

When I saw Hornibrook's noodle arm, and the #12, and the left handed QB, the first thing came to my mind was Allan Evridge.
Dumpster. Fire.

Indeed.
I was at this game with my wife, a UCF alumna. We didn't have signal to do any kind of browsing, but texts and push notifications were getting through. She got the blast from ESPN just a minute or so before the winning interception. There's been such an aura of inevitability around the news, so I think she had already come to terms with it.
I think most of the people around us were still oblivious or in denial, however, as there were loud chants of "Stay!" and "We want Frost!" leading to and during the award presentation.
We also attended the UCF/USF game the week prior, and there was a level of electricity at these games that brought me back to the '98 and '00 Nebraska games. Maybe it was the bouncing. Regardless, I would trade Baylor and WVU straight up for these two teams.

If anyone had doubts about the effect a play caller has on a game, you should watch Texas Tech in the Birmingham Bowl. This is an absolute clinic in shitty play calling, Tech should have this game put away. They keep doing really stupid crap like throwing on 2nd and 3rd and goal from the three, leading to an interception, and throwing on 3rd and 10 from their own 20 with 90 seconds left in the half, leading to a sack.
-
Both of these teams are dogshit
-
Charles Strong always could beat Texas Tech. Not sure firing him was a great move by Texas.
-
If Snyder is going to stick around we should just run Army's offense and hope for the best.
-

are you sure you are a MU fan? Losing to bad KU teams should always be a fireable offense

0 points for Toledo.

Texas Tech proved once again today that it's garbage.
-
0 points for Toledo.
Jeez, and they were 1 td favorites
-
I cheered for Charlie and the Bulls but granted he did piss me off when they went for it on 4th down twice in the second half instead of kicking field goals. Down by 7 and take a pass on 6 easy points.
-
So what’s the B12 record so far in bowl games? Just turned on this Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl and WVU is gonna get torched I guess
-
Looks like there's still plenty of good seats available for the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl. Like 60000 or 70000 seats. Go 'Eers.

didn't we only sell 3k of our seats to the cacti?

Yeah, because ppl are tired of paying for crappy bowl games. It was only a matter of time. Recent opponent, shitty bowl game, and pretty far to travel.

Yeah there will be plenty of good seats available for tonight's Cactus Bowl.

WVU...holy crap. WTF happened with that muffed punt?
-
WVU doesn't look really interested in this game. And without Grier, WVU's offense is really bad.

You can’t convince me that if WVU had everyone playing today that this game would be any different. They are white hot garbage.
-
is this the same WVU that beat us on our home field? I didn't see that game.
-

This is the real WVU. They just had one of those “1 in a million” games when they played us.
-
is this the same WVU that beat us on our home field? I didn't see that game.
Well, you're lucky.
Was quite possibly the worst offensive game plan I've ever seen and I'm somewhat comfortable saying it was the worst playcalled game I've ever witnessed. Had absolutely no reason to lose that game, especially after how the first half should've played out.
They were then, and still are complete garbage
-
WVU has only played well when Grier was healthy. Without him they're a mess.
-
kick off for the quick lane bowl, go duke

I'm assuming no one watched the Quick Lane Bowl because this has to be the highlight of the entire bowl season

That one’s always bad. We went a few years back when Okie Lite played Brees University and picked up front row tickets a few minutes before game time for about $30 each

Texas really does have an amazing punter.
-
Texas Bowl is a fun watch; except for the SEC knob slobbering. Must be due to the large ESPN investment in the conference.
-
Omg the entire UT sideline (including Herman) mocking Mizzou’s qb.
-
Texas really does have an amazing punter.
He was legitimately incredible. 8 punts inside the 10, 10/11 inside the 20. And at least 4 I think were inside the 5, and pretty much all but 1 of those was super easy for his team to down. It was a clinic of being a great punter.
-
Omg the entire UT sideline (including Herman) mocking Mizzou’s qb.
I was sad to see Herman joining in the mocking of a 20 year old... college players will be college players and get carried and/or have fun with each other, but to see the coach encouraging that sort of behavior was a little sad in my book. Also sad that a handful of stud recruits probably saw than and thought "that's the type of person I want to play for"
Also, I agree with above posts that the punter for Texas was absolutely awesome... always fun to see a special teams guy impact the game with limited snaps.
-

What was the situation?

Lock threw a long td and kind of posed and did his thing early in the game.

Ah. I found an article on it. Man, Herman is a rough ridin' prick. I don’t like Mizzou at all, but what a horrible look for a head coach.

woukd you have ever imagined Texas as a barely eligible for a bowl team reduced to its head coach acting like that on national TV? Like if you had just turned off the TV after Vince Young won the natty and woke up in 2017 after a coma it would be more shocking than finding out about Snapchat.
-
if he did it against a non-big 12 defector I'd say I didn't like it. but if anyone stunts on mizzou i'm all for it.
-
In general, I want UT to be really good, and I want us to beat them. When those two things happen it is almost always a great Cats season.
-
Cept with Ron tho
-
I googled a couple variations of “secure the bag” and I still don’t understand this.

Meh, outside of Ron, the last time Snyder beat a really good Texas team was what? '99?
-

LOL, I have no idea what that is either. The writer seemed to suggest everyone knew what that was and I was like “must be like that time when I didn’t know what the dougie was and everyone was talking about it and eventually I just gave up and never asked.”
-
herman should have gone to the mizzou qb after the game to apologize, then pull away from the handshake and spit in his eye

All the Snyder 1.0 UT wins were against pretty good UT teams IIRC. I am probably revising history tho. Man, the Ricky Williams win was so much fun.

With how history unfolded, you probably won that decision to not invest any more time in it.

I assumed it was basically the backpack thing Hosmer and the Roys used to do (and I have no idea where that came from either). Probably wrong tho cause I'm on "no idea what dougie is" team as well.

Nah, Texas was 5-4 in conference that year. 9 win team, but not "really good."
We needed to beat them at the end of the season to secure the Dr. Pepper because OU only had one conference loss (like us).

Has Snyder had a chance to beat a really good Texas team since 99? Maybe 1-3 opportunities?

After starting 0-2, the B12 has gone 4-0. The only losses were a close game in which Tech was matched with heavy fav USF and WVU's shitty backup QB. Nice comebacks by KSU and TCU, particularly TCU while playing against a pretty decent team. I just watched the first quarter and Hill was throwing dimes right at the Stanford defense.
-
Who's responsible for taking the slang term of securing the bag and making a gesture for it that depicts literally putting a backpack on?

Stanford looked pretty good against TCU, was glad that Frogs eventually put them in their place. I know that it's not a really great measure of a conference's quality, but a winning bowl record for the Big 12 would be a pretty good bump. Was disturbed by the 0-2 start, now the worst the Big 12 could do would be .500. Go Clones and Land Thieves.

PAC is currently 1-7. Utah vs WVU is only win.
USC is probably going to lose tonight.
Washington (underdog) plays Penn State Sat.
Wonder if a P5 has ever had a lower win percentage.
FSD already hit on it, but SEC could get a lower win percentage yet!

I hope that when Iowa State loses today, they can do it with a little dignity and not with the usual whining we're accustomed to from that crowd.

I'm not bullshitting when I say this but the Busch Light thing made two different news broadcasts here. Busch Light was trending on twitter in Iowa. My wife said it was on her fb feed more than once.
They are where we were 25 years ago. If we got our first real taste of success during the social media era, I'm sure we'd have some of this cheesy stuff too, but it wouldn't be at the volume as these herbs. Their echo chamber of cheesy is truly impressive, they fully embrace stuff like a sold out liberty bowl, that was 60% Memphis fans and had thousands of empty seats.

Pfft, doesn't sound like a great molder of young men to me. Probably doesn't even work like 97 hours a week and have a mainline of coffee to his heart.

This game makes you appreciate good special teams. OU punter is awful. Kickoff execution prior to halftime was laughable and cost 3 points. No idea why you don't pooch kick it there instead of squibb...you outkick your coverage with a squibb..pooch forces a fair catch or at least you should have it well covered. Horrible.

LFG!!!!!!!

Two SEC teams in the Championship. It will pull a shitty rating just as Bama vs LSU did years back. This will hopefully drive the committee crazy and the playoff to 8 teams.

they did in fact play an 11 game reg season. memphis game was rescheduled from 9/8 to 9/30 due to hurricane irma.
then they played memphis again in the aac title game, then the peach bowl = 13-0

#math

Well they did play 11 reg season games. canceled games were Maine and Georgia tech. Maine had zero shot, gt perhaps would.

i think mir meant that they did not play a full 12 game reg season. the ga tech game was canceled (also due to irma) but not rescheduled.
just about every other team that played a conf champ game + bowl game played 14 games

Correct, the actual national champion will have either played a 14 or 15 game season. The committee certainly screwed them with their ranking but they weren't top 4.
It's hilarious how some of you are suddenly okay with Helms titles and whatever in the hell Oklahoma State football did with their retroactive championship.

i haven't actually looked into this but my impression was they are just doing this for fun and not actually going to "claim" it

Well, Oklahoma State's bogus national championship is bogus because Army was undefeated and unquestionably played a ridiculous schedule. This article by Trammel (i know I know) does a pretty good job laying it out:
http://newsok.com/article/5522556 (http://newsok.com/article/5522556).
UCF was the only undefeated team in the country and beat one of the best teams in the Country along the way. They have a much better argument that Oklahoma State imo. And regardless, if Oklahoma State gets to claim a national title, why shouldn't UCF?

Most of the blue bloods in college football claim bogus national titles. I don't think this championship by UCF is legitimate, but it's worthy of hanging on the side of their stadium.

Why attack me because I don't share your opinion? You do this crap to wacky all of the time then act innocent when he flips his crap. I assure you that UCF cares more about this and are taking it far more seriously than I am, but thank you for injecting me into the conversation because I had the audacity to have a different opinion than you.

I'd assume that's fairly standard. I'd love to see what that bonus looks like compared to what that staffs national championship bonus looks like at Nebraska.
-
I’m actually glad UCF is poking the bear on this one. I’m not convinced there was anything they could have done during the regular season to get put in the top 4. They cannot get into a P5 conference so at best they could have played 1-2 more quality games. Without a legitimate playoff we really are in the same spot we were 100 years ago when everyone just claimed national titles.
-
Speaking of which do we have a cool nickname yet for the legendary 1910 Championship Cats?
-
Perfect opportunity for BigXII expansion then poke the SEC bear a little by claiming they’re adding the defending National Champ
Won’t happen but I’m #teamucf if expansion happens
-
Let's also not forget it was not long ago at all when the winner of the "national championship" game was not declared national champion. The system has been and continues to be complete crap.
-
Two best teams are playing for the championship game for the third time in three tries of the playoff, so there is tjsy.
-
If Bama wins, it would be the 2nd out of 4 tries that the 4 seed has won it all (the top seed has never won). If the last team selected can win half the time, why would we assume #5-10 wouldn't be the "best team" if they won it all?
-

No one would. I mean look at the big 10, 3 NY6 bowls and they won all 3, and the only one that was won by a TD or less was Penn St-WashU and most of that game Penn St was up by 2+ TDs. Any one of those 3 teams would be serious champ game contenders, I like that we've got a playoff, and I am playing the long con on doing this in baby steps, but until this playoff has all P5 conference champs, the top G5 team and at least 2 at larges then it forever will let a few teams that could go the distance out of it.
And fwiw I'm generally ok with UCF milking this for all they got. Teams like TCU pre Big 12 (2011 Rose Bowl v Wisconsin and played v. Boise St in 2009 Fiesta Bowl but lost), Utah pre Pac 12 (2005 Fiesta and 2009 Sugar v. 12-1 Bama), Boise St (2006, 2009, and 2014 Fiesta Bowls), UCF (2013 Fiesta and obv 2017 Peach bowl), Houston (2015 Peach), have proven themselves capable of winning BCS/NY6 bowls against any other competition, and pretty much successful (Western Michigan, Hawaii, and Northern Illinois are the only to lose a BCS/NY6 games vs a P5 school).
It makes them 9-4 in those games, 1 of those losses being cause it had to happen between TCU/Boise St.
-
That is awesome. Hopefully they get a lot of votes in the final poll.

No joke. If Bama went 13-0 this year and got snubbed from the playoff would you expect them to just roll over?
-
I think people are just upset because UCF is acting like a big time program. Deciding not to celebrate their national championship is the small-timey thing to do.
My issue is that they are acting as if get had no control over not being in the CFP and that's ridiculous. Their non con consisted of FIU, Georgia Tech, Maine, and Maryland; the best team in that group, by far, was 5-6 Georgia Tech, a game they didn't even play. If Houston didn't gag last year they would have been in the CFP. I don't think this was the best or most deserving G5 team the last 15 years or so anyway. They also were absolutely hurt by the fact that they were 0-11 just two years ago, sucks but it's really hard for people to take a G5 team seriously that has a roster with half of the players that has a winless season.
To me this UCF season was great, but I'm having a hard time distinguishing this from KU's Orange Bowl season.

College football really just needs to put a system in place that makes it impossible for anyone but their national champion to finish a season undefeated. It’s not that hard to do.
I was thinking this as well. All you need to do is start with the 8-team format. All P5s have championship games so you can never have more than 1 undefeated there. For G5 teams, in the off chance more than one goes undefeated, the lower ranked/seeded either get an at-large spot or you add a wildcard/play-in game.

You would have to just give them an at-large spot. A play-in game that never occurs would be too hard to schedule every year.

That would be a recipe for all G5 teams to compete for the softest possible non-con schedule. Going undefeated in conference but missing the playoffs due to losing a non conference game against a P5 team would get the AD run.

And introducing CHIngons Preferred Playoff System (ChiPPS):
Automatic bid:
Winner of each P5 conference
Hightest ranked midmajor
Two wildcards (two highest ranked P5 teams remaining, with the caveat that a conference can have at most two representatives in the playoffs)
This year:
1) Clemson[1] vs 8) USC[17]
3) Georgia [3] vs 6) Wisconsin [5]
4) Ohio State [4] vs 5) Alabama [6]
2) Oklahoma[2] vs 7) UCF [10]
-
That would be a recipe for all G5 teams to compete for the softest possible non-con schedule. Going undefeated in conference but missing the playoffs due to losing a non conference game against a P5 team would get the AD run.
Very few of these teams are actually capable of going undefeated in conference, so I don't think that would matter.
I agree the risk is low. And G5 teams by far have more incentive to schedule good OOC games because they can bring in much more revenue than conference games. So if you really think you have a chance at running the table, sure schedule some cupcakes. It’s not like some of the top ranked schools haven’t done that.
For the 8 team format, I also think an easy solution is adding a play-in game for any undefeated G5 teams that don’t get the auto bid or at large spot. They could play the lowest ranked at large team similar to an NFL Wildcard game.
-
If you have more than 2 extra undefeated G5 teams, the 2 lowest ranked play each other first.

that's a good system. it looks like your seeding is based on each school's ChiPPS rating, but i think you'd want to reward p5 conf champs with seeds 1-5, then sort out 6-8 with the 2 wild cards and g5 team based on their ChiPPS rating.
for example, the pre-bowl snowbrag rankings of the p5 champs, highest g5, and 2 highest p5 at-larges were as follows:
1) alabama at-large1
2) georgia champ1
3) oklahoma champ2
4) ohio state champ3
5) wisconsin at-large2
6) clemson champ4
7) ucf g5 champ
13) usc champ5
and the seeding (if you follow what i said above) would be as follows:
1) georgia [2] vs 8) ucf [7]
3) ohio state [4] vs 6) alabama [1]
4) clemson [6] vs 5) usc [13]
2) oklahoma [3] vs 7) wisconsin [5]

So a good G5 team gets to pound puds to a conference championship and gets the same seat at the table that an 11-1 team that went thru the P5 wringer does?
-
Yeah, and it makes basketball very exciting
-
Yeah absolutely. Its a win win for the CFP.
-If the g5 team gets beat, cool, we rewarded a top level p5 champ with an overmatched opponent for the first round.
-If the g5 team wins, well they obviously belong
-
So a good G5 team gets to pound puds to a conference championship and gets the same seat at the table that an 11-1 team that went thru the P5 wringer does?
Do you think 16 seeds have the same seat at the table as 1 seeds?

In 2015, Western Kentucky, San Diego State, and Arkansas State went undefeated in conference play. How did they do outside the conference?
Western Kentucky lost to Indiana and was blown out by LSU 48-20.
SDSU lost to Penn State, was blown out by Cal 35-7, and lost to SOUTH ALABAMA
Arkansas State lost to Mizzou, and were blown out 55-6 by USC, 37-7 by Toledo, and 47-28 by Louisiana Tech.
It's a great theory, but the reality is that the small schools simply don't measure up. David can beat Goliath once or twice, but he can't win week after week after week.
-
Yeah, and it makes basketball very exciting
The tournament is exciting because it's a gimmick. It's a pretty terrible way to crown a champion, tho.
-
Ok squawk
-
Ok squawk
I think we can all agree that the best way to determine a champion is for a bakery to invent a foundation and have that "foundation" arbitrarily choose champions decades after the fact.
-
Yeah take Ching's system and use computer rankings for the mid major and at large and tell everyone the formula for the rankings
-
In the ideal world, any FBS team can start the year knowing that if they do X they have a guaranteed shot at the title. For P5 teams that would be win your conference, and for G5 teams it would be getting the highest ranking (which should drive efforts to schedule legit opps).

I think you tell the G5 that they get one seat and they can decide how to award it.
-
Why is it always presumed that a playoff has to have 4, 8, 16, etc. teams? I like continuing to stress the importance of the regular season by having rewards aside from being a completely equal member of the playoffs. Byes, home games, etc.
Of course, I generally think trying to have a playoff in college football is dumb. There are too many college football teams and not enough games in the year for there to ever be a truly fair way to whittle the pool down to 1 undisputed champion. Just go back to where everyone does their own thing, you play to win your conference and whatever bowl game that conference is aligned with, and claim whatever you want at the end based on your accomplishments. The free market will judge how much any claim should be recognized.
-
A 16 team playoff with just 1 at large would be pretty nice. I kind of think 15 teams with no at larges would be better, though. Just give #1 a bye.
-
i don't want more than 8
-
if you get rid of at-larges then OOC becomes 100% completely meaningless.
-

I think we would get a lot more marquee OOC games that way. They would still be very important for seeding, but a loss wouldn't hurt all that much. They would also still count toward bowl eligibility.
-
Yeah, but Orlando is trash.
-
Yeah, but Orlando is trash.
Ames, Morgantown, Stillwater, Norman, Lubbock, and Waco tho

Fair. I just figure if i'm going all the way to Florida, I want to be on the beach, not inland. Even if it's only an hour away.
-

Right. That's why I like 8. Having a tough OOC becomes insurance against dropping an conference game to a team you think you should beat. It helped OSU last year and OU this year.
-
I think a lot of the concerns about a 16 team playoff could be addressed by just shortening the season by 1 or 2 games.

Yup, and I am right there. Also on #teamnomorethan8. It ends up being the best of all worlds. No bitching about P5 Confy Champs getting left out, and winning your conference means something. No bitching about the G5 not having at least 1 guaranteed spot, and no bitching from schools who have a WTF game they shouldn't have lost, or lost a tight game to another really good team. Essentially you have a mulligan, and as chings points out, it still makes the OOC matter, since it can put you in over other potentially worthy schools. Anything beyond 8 ends up becoming unwieldy and you serious have to consider dropping at least 1 OOC game.

Yup, couple head scratchers in this one.
6 seconds left in the first half, 1st down with the ball at the 3, JMU kicks a field goal instead of at least throwing a fade or slant. Ended up losing by the 4 points that a TD there could've got them.

:dubious:
Why would they have to go undefeated? They had one loss, the national champion had 2. I'm sure you all would have been 100% cool and supportive if KU decided to award themselves a national title because they finished as the highest ranked team with the fewest amount of losses. I mean after all, the system didn't allow them the same opportunity as LSU, they should hang a banner.
-
An undefeated ku would not be left out of a 2 team championship that year.
An undefeated ucf was left out of a 4 team championship.
There is zero comparison
-
The only difference I see is that UCF was bold enough to claim their title like any big time football program would and KU was just too small timey to do the same.

You could find a team that has a legit gripe about not getting an equitable opportunity to play for a national championship literally every year, it's the nature of college football.

The equitable opportunity to me is the opportunity to go undefeated. Once you lose, you've given the committee an opportunity to compare your mortality to other teams and make choices. Teams can complain about deserving to be in with losses, and maybe they're right, but they put themselves in the position to be left out. UCF did everything they could and still didn't get their chance. If I were them, I would also build a trophy just a little bit bigger than the real one.

What makes you think that? You will get the biggest bunch of turds ever in that scenario. Unless you love NFL preseason games, this is a terrible idea.

The thing that makes the argument about the first four out during bball season meaningless is this: not one single team has a legitimate gripe. EVER. The national tournament starts for every team the first day of their conference tournament. Every team has the same chance to win it all.
That's why fball needs to go to conference champions. Again, there would be no LEGITIMATE gripe. The national playoff would start the first day of your conference schedule. Win and you're in....that simple. It would make OOC games meaningless which would incentivize teams to schedule up to prepare for their conference.
-

Sit their starters???? This would be a brilliant strategy that i'm sure most coaches would ascribe to (even though most of their starters turn over each year.) Great point. No need to get the "starters" game experience to get them ready for the start of the tournament.
-
First, we're not talking about a 20-game schedule like the NFL+preseason.
Second, no chance a good team would sit their starters unless they were actually recovering from injury. Very few college kids are going to have enough experience to warrant that.
Third, schools already face significant pressure to schedule good OOC games. Good games bring in more dollars to the local community because they are better attended and they bring more dollars to the conference because of better TV ratings.
Fourth, as long as there are at large spots available, scheduling will still matter.
-

For as huge of a dumbass as WB is, I kind of agree with him here. I'd limit it to the P5 champs, then 3 at larges with some G5 autobids for being undefeated w/ a top 15-20ish ranking (computer type rating or human? IDK), so they don't schedule a super soft OOC.
I'd throw in that you force each P5 to play another P5 OOC, and maybe force the 8 game P5 confey schedules to play a G5 OOC game as well on top of that. No idea if that would actually work, but to me, it would make for some pretty cool OOC games since a loss doesn't end your Natty hopes. Which is why many big schools get scared of a lot of OOC matchups, I think.

I agree. That doesn’t change the fact that most (maybe all?) of the programs that have more than a few national championships have titles less legitimate than UCF’s.

Absolutely, but within this current system G5 teams do have a chance

Prove it.

Houston would have been in last year had they not crap the bed in conference. They beat two top 5 schools from the P5.
I can't be as sure but I think Boise, TCU, and Utah may have made the top 4 in this format. Boise and Utah finished the regular season in the top 6 of the BCS twice each, TCU finished in the top 4 twice. This UCF team would have finished 10th this year if the BCS existed, the same as Hawaii in 2007 and Tulane in 1998. It's fine for UCF to act like they were snubbed but to try it as an objective argument is silly.

Man I get what you're saying, but you're leaving out a lot of the scheduling issues G5 teams face. Big schools that you'd need to beat to jump up in the rankings are not scheduling these teams anymore. They see the risk reward as too big a losing proposition. Why not schedule like the SEC and have cupcakes with few exceptions when your leagues value is already extremely overvalued by pollsters. UCFs of the world don't have enough opportunity to schedule these games to jump up fast enough in the rankings.
-
the only reason i posted the comparative SOS's between '07 KU and UCF was to laugh at ku's crappy schedule.
-
You are right that Houston could have made it so there is a chance. I will say that realistically, G5 schools have to go on at least a two year run in order to get a chance. That seems pretty unfair to me.
-
They also have to schedule teams OOC that end up being really good when they actually play the game. Guess wrong and too bad.
-

I agree with all of this but there are P5 schools in the exact same boat.
-
I don't think any undefeated P5 team would ever be left out of a playoff. There are some that could finish with 1 loss and be passed over for a 2 loss team, though.
-
if OU had played San Diego State or whatever instead of Ohio State, then not lost to iowa state, they would have still made the playoff
-
if 5 P5 teams go undefeated then someone will necessarily be left out.
