Speaking of Tennis, I saw a blurb that they're going to spend $2 million dollars updating the outdoor amenities at the rec complex including re-doing all the tennis courts, the athletic department is helping to pay for it so the women's tennis team can move home matches back to campus.

Yeah it sucks when all the americans lose early. I've decided that I'm going to root for Monfis. He's a french guy that hotdog's his way through every match. Very fun to watch.

Went to NYC, stopping over in Cincy on the way home. Not doing anything besides going to a couple sessions at the tennis center in Mason and hoping back on a plane home. Saw the stadiums down by the river, looked like a really nice setup. Do you live up here?

Yeah, I'll be at the womens semis on Saturday evening.  I think Toby Keith just opened a restaurant down there by the river if that's your sort of thing.

Okay, so this writer, Brian Phillips, was at Wimbledon and wrote something about Serena's hair that described it as a warm comfy place that he would have liked to hide in when he was a child.  When I read it, I was like, "WTF?". Well, i saw Serena tonight and I had a hard time taking my eyes off of her hair.  It was ... inviting?

Now a huge Marion Bartoli fan, she's fun to watch.

Also going to the Open was amazing, the best sporting event I have ever attended.  I can't wait to go back, would be an amazing trip with a group of buddies.

Went to the US Open in '10 for the Men's Semifinal pairing Federer/Djokovic & Nadal/Youzhny.  It was pretty Elite.  Was also on 9/11, so there was that.

If I ever go back, I'll go at the beginning of the tourney instead of the tail-end so as to see a lot more tennis.  Semis were great matches, but the place was pretty much abandoned except for Arthur Ashe.  Would love to see a night match and experience the energy and activity of that place in the opening rounds.

I went on the night session of Day 1.  Lucked out that some of the day sessions were postponed by rain so I got to see a lot of tennis.  I saw matches on 7 different courts.  Got there at 6PM and left at 1:30 am.  Watching matches on the side courts was amazing.  I just wish I wasn't stopping through on my way to somewhere else, I'd love to go for a few days, I didn't even get a chance to go to the fan experience.

If you like tennis, this is the underrated part about going to tournaments.  A few weeks ago I watched the current #16 and #19 play a close 3-setter (this was a best of 3 tournament) from the 2nd row at mid-court in between watching Federer and Dvokovic in the stands of the main court.  Also with tennis, those matches are worth serious $$, so they are really into it.  In that Raonic/Wawrinka match I referenced earlier the winner got $75K more for playing in that tournament than the loser.  I imagine going from court to court watching the 4th and 5th sets of matches at the US Open is even more amazing.

I would think it would be cool for non tennis fans.  Being so close to high level athletics is very cool.  One of the side courts I sat at two guys by the name of Denis Istomin and Jurgen Zopp.  There couldn't have been more than 50 people watching and most of those 50 were friends, family, and coaches of the players.  Zopp is from Estonia and there were about 20 people wildin' out with Estonia flags, face paint, etc.  It was a close match and every point was very intense.  Zopp won the match and when it was over he ran into the Estonians in tears, it was like he just won the tournament or the Davis Cup.  He just won the first round but it was the biggest win of his life and it was a really cool moment.

One of the more elite aspects of great tennis players is the fact that the dominant arm is always considerably hulkish compared to the other.  Federer and Nadal espesh.

The fans are annoying, but he is a good guy who deserves to have all the fans.  The way he acted during the match was night-and-day from the way the Williams sisters handled themselves.

Sorry, needed more context.  The Williams sisters fans/groupies were just as plentiful & annoying as Roger's fans at the tourny in Cincy.  The difference was Roger acted like a geniuenly nice guy.  As an example, I watched ~10 matches over 2 days.  Every player during those matches constantly had the ball boys bring them their towel.  Every person would use the towel while facing the ball boys, then hand or toss it back.  Both the sisters constantly turned around, walked away, then just dropped it at their feet.  Whenever Venus would serve and lose a point, like clockwork on her next serve she would toss the ball off center then let it drop.  Every point she lost she pouted.  For some reason the fans loved her.  Serena was supposed to play on the main court at 1:00 PM, but she didn't get to the stadium until 2:00, putting everyone 1.5 behind (this royally messed up the day/night session ticketing).  During the match, which she lost, she had a nice meltdown where she shattered her racket.  Also, prior to serving everyone always got 3 or 4 balls, kept 2, and hit the others back to the ball boys.  Serena never did this, she always dropped the ball right behind her.  Both just acted like brats the entire time, but the fans didn't care.

Prior to that I always liked Venus and was indifferent about Serena.  I could never bring myself to root for her just because of the physical advantage she had over everyone.  It felt like rooting for the Yankees.  Plus the media fawns over both of them as well.  During Serena's match last night Pam Shriver was gushing over Serena saying she's only had 2 meltdowns in her career and both were at the US Open, but I watched her do it 2 weeks ago in a loss.

I'm glad you clarified that because I was about to completely light you up, your first statement didn't play well.  You started whining about the Williams sisters when the topic was RF's groupies.  Certainly whatever reason Serena showed up late was okay with the tournament officials and the WTA.  It was a sanctioned event that has rules, you can't show up when you want to.  If she was 90 minutes late she would have been withdrawn from the tournament & fined.  Also why can't I find an article, blog entry, or even a story comment about this delay?

As for not liking her because she pouts, you must not like a lot of tennis players.  Sharapova is the biggest pouter ever, more tennis players pout than the alternative.

Also fans and the media fall all over her because she's won 14 goddamned majors and 4 gold medals.  She's unquestionably the greatest women's player of all time.

If you want to dislike her because she is an bad person to lines people, that's fine.  Not liking her because she's done the work to be the most physically imposing player ever yet quick and fit is really dumb.  Venus Williams is the most harmless, benign, boring star player on the tour.

Serena wasn't punish for being late because the fans would have majorly revolted.  By the rules, she should have been, but the paying customers would have burned the place down.  I would have agreed with you on Venus before watching her play.  My point (and I admit my first post looked bad) is I was surprised by how much their fans let that stuff go.  I also don't really care for Sharapova either, but I know alot of tennis fans that don't for the same reasons I came out of Cincy not really caring for the Williams sisters.  They get a pass because they are American (which is understandable).

From what I remember of this Serena started an hour late becuase ESPN wanted to show the finish of Venus' match because it was close and a very good match.  Center court was running on two hour splits and the match before it ended about 10 or 15 min before the next match was scheduled to start so they had some wiggle room and decided that showing Venus' match to the end and all of Serena's was more beneficial than starting all of the matches exactly on time espically when they already have plans when matches last longer than two hours which is why the schedule says, for example, that a match will start not beore 1:00 pm, meaning that it could start later.  Although, I don't think that they expected the match to start an hour later, I'm guessing they thought it would take 20-30 min max.  I seem to remember one of the players on Venus' match making an unexpected push at the end of the match.

Still, I'm not a fan of the Williams sisters but I was sitting in Center Court as this happened and this is what I remember of it.

I left after the first set & recorded the rest of the match because I thought Vika we going to get beat 6-2 6-1.  I just finished watching, man it was awesome.  I really like Vika.  I don't like her awkward mannerisms or the constant shots of her smelly looking boyfriend though.

Watching these assholes play is pissing me off.  If they don't get anything off of the first serve they are just playing the ball to the middle of the court waiting for their opponent to make an unforced error.  A 90 minute set isn't intense, its gutless tennis.  :flush:

How about Vika taking advantage of the stupid MTO rule?

This is only my second year watching, but I remember almost the exact same situation last year.  Can't remember the match, but it was an obvious abuse.  I also remember several times when a player would have the trainer give them a rub down on the court when it seemed that their primary motivation was just to stop the match in order to regroup.  So, I mean, my reaction is like, "it happens," and I wonder why they talk about it like it's so shocking and controversial.

I was never a big sampras fan for some reason. I don't know why. maybe because I was a big aggasi fan? remember his shoe? I think I lost my crap to my mom until she bought them for me before little kid tennis camp one summer.

I strolled to the racquet club in my Agassi line shoes, shorts, shirt, Head racquet bag, and an arsenal of Head Radical OS racquets because he was God to me.

Hell, I was a baseliner because he was.

I went last year.  Great tourney to go to.  Big players are there.  There are the perfect amount of fans.  Enough fans to make it a good environment, but you can go from court-to-court very easy and watch some great players up close.  It's also a very nice facility with plenty of concessions and vendors.  If you like tennis it's a great way to spend a couple of days relaxing and enjoying it.

I've thought about doing that when I'm older and have lots of time on my hands.  I've only been to one tournament, but it was super laid back (even moreso than baseball) and had tons of booze of all kinds.  And there are so many matches that you can come and go as you please.

Hate the Aussie Open just for this. I tried to stay up for the Tsonga/Federer match earlier this week after the highly entertaining Nadal/Nishikori match but didn't make the 4AM start, I set the dvr only to come back to it later to see that ESPN switched the network. :bang:

Nadal definitely has to be the fav tonight.  Roger has to serve incredible like he has been all tourney.   He has won 85% of his 1st serve pts.  In 21 service games, Murray only had 1 game where he had a break point.  In the previous match, Tsonga was only 0-1 on break pts the entire match.

The match was ridiculous, she should have lost in straight sets with a billion errors, she attempted winners nearly every time she swung her racquet but never missed. I'm sure they'll put her on the grandstand or Billie Jean King on Wednesday and she's going to get trashed. She will be playing a low ranked player though.

Are we seeing the tending down of Rafa, kinda like the trending down of Feds started in 2011.
Rafa wasn't himself on Clay this year.  In the last 5 years (15 Aussie/Wimbledon/US slams), Rafa has missed 3 due to injury, he has failed to make Semis in 8 of those 12, and has same number of titles as Feds (1).

He may get healthy again and be the man to beat on clay. Outside of the French, you have to wonder if Feds Murray or Wawrinka are all more likely to win a Slam in 2016-2017

At the same time.... I think Djoker may just be the man to beat for some time.  As a huge Feds fan, I honestly won't be shocked if Novak is gunning for #16.17,18 by the end of 2019

Djoker has now won 4 straight Majors, being the current champ of the Australian French Wimbledon and USOpen.  He has 12 titles, Feds 17, Rafa 14

1) Feds most successful stretch was winning 12 of 19 majors he played in. Won 16 of 27 if you stretch it out just a bit longer
Djoker has won 11 of the last 22 majors he has competed in
Rafa won 13 of 30 majors he competed in during his best stretch

2)Feds made finals in 18 of 19 Majors once, and 22 of 27
Djoker has now made 17 of last 22 finals
Rafa made 19 of 30 finals at one point

3) Feds made quarters in 36 straight majors. He made 23 straight Semis
Djoker has now made 28 straight Qtrs. Has made 23 of last 24 Semis
Rafa made Qtrs in 22 of 24 he once played

Just awesome tennis we have witnessed the past 13 years from 3 of the top 5 players in tennis history

I would have guessed that Nadal's best run was better than that, in my memory his reign was as dominant as Tiger's but not quite as long.

Nadal v. Joker - 23-26 - Novak Djokovic and Nadal have met 49 times (more than any other pair in the Open Era)
Nadal v. Fed - 23-11  :surprised:

A year ago I would have said that Federer is GOAT but that's before I knew his record against Nadal and before Djokovic became a total monster.

I never know what to think about the disproportionality of Nadal's Grand Slams. 9 are the French Open. Is it even possible to compare Grand Slam titles? On the other hand, 7 of Federer's are Wimbledon and 6 of Djoker's are Australian.
Title: Re: here comes 2014 tennis
Post by: bubbles4ksu on June 09, 2016, 12:34:25 PM
Maybe Djoker's Slam wins should impress us more since they've come on the surface where you see the broadest range of players. Roger still has 9 hard court wins to his 8, but that'll change.

The disproportionality doesn't bother me so much. I think because I watched Sampras suck at the French I grew up thinking that anyone who wins even one on their weakest surface deserves eternal respect.

...and now I have to watch videos of Bjorn Borg to figure out how he won 5 at Wimbledon and 6 at RG and never on a hard court.
Title: Re: here comes 2014 tennis
Post by: MakeItRain on June 09, 2016, 07:05:00 PM
Nadal's disproportionate amount of clay court wins is the only fluke in that bunch; he could only beat the best of his era on one surface that is played on a very limited basis.

Sampras never won a French and dominated Wimbledon (7) and the US (5).  Agassi only has 8 Grand Slam titles, but all of them.  I liked watching Agassi more because he was much more unpredictable and had more facets to his game.  Sampras was probably the pinnacle of serve/volley and was actually what I tried to play like.

There was some kind of audio noise during a rally in the fourth set that if he would have won that point he would have won the game, it was 40-30 at the time. The chair umpire called a let and replayed the point, he was not in command of the rally at the time, they were just trading on the baseline. He threw a little fit, lost the replayed point, ended up losing the match and he whined about the let call thorough the rest of the match. The ugly crybaby got exactly what he deserved.

Andy Murray melts down after equipment malfunction at US Open http://es.pn/2bZkru1

Here's good video of what happened
Murray enraged after sound during break point http://es.pn/2ce3Ao7
He then proceeded to whine, slam his racket, break the Mercedes logos at the nets, and just be a shithead the rest of the match. He got booed.

I saw this funny looking dude beat Djoker in the first set on a tiebreak before I went to bed last night. I guess he ended up winning the match.

ISTOMIN! I saw him at the US Open in 2009, that match on a side court was one of the coolest things I've ever seen, I'm sure I've mentioned it in here before.

EPIC!!!!  I slept 3 hours. Got up and watched last 3 sets. Roger won final 5 games, 6-3 in the 5th set

In 17', a guy with 17 Slams seeded 17th...Maybe its fitting. Congrats Feds on #18.

35 yrs 5 months old. He took almost 6 months off to get healthy after injury, and he goes out and wins the Aussie. Awesome.

Roger Federer!!!

Just won his 20th major.  Dude is unreal. Never thought he get here. Even said himself 15 months ago, I think I can get 1 more and get #18

In his prime, over 25 grand slam stretch, he made 21 Finals, winning 15.  Then the next 25, he made 5 finals winning just 1 as Djoker won 11 and Rafa 8.  But now for the 3rd time in last 5 Slams, Roger is hoisting a Trophy at a Major.  At 36.5 years old he won #20

Djokovic has battled some injuries lately, and  isn't the dominant player he was in 2015-2016. Rafa, like Roger, won 2 majors last year, but at times has hard time staying healthy.   Pushing 37 years old, Fed could be the guy to beat at Wimbledon and even US Open later this year

Just watched a replay of this match a little while ago. Man, Roger Federer. So good. Cilic had the momentum going into the 5th set but for some reason got derailed when he lost the first game of the 5th. Roger regained the momentum there and never looked back.

Djoker wins 3rd straight GS. Naomi wins 2nd straight. She is a superstar in the making.

Djokovic really impressive.  6-3 6-2 6-3 over Rafa. Total pts won 89 to 53.  Won last 17 sets on hardcore against Nadal.  Since 2011, he's 21-9 vs Rafa (14-2 on hardcourt/Grass, 7-7 on clay)

Joker used to be my least favorite of the latest Big3+Murray. But man, he’s been so good for so long. Really wanted it for him too. I don’t like to compare generations in their prime because it’s futile, but Joker might be this class’ GOAT. Makes what Federer has done that more impressive too I guess.

Made the trip Labor Day weekend of 2018 and got to see Novak, Sharapova, Rafa, Federer/Kyrgios, Sloane and then the icing — Serena play Venus to kick off the a night session. Idk if I could asked for a better 2 day stretch.

Everything but Arthur Ashe. They should have gotten an upper deck Arthur Ashe ticket, that gets you everything.

Nah, it's early in the tournament and there's matches going on like 10 different courts at once and many of the early matches, especially on the bigger courts, tend to be better players against really overmatched opponents. The night sessions are better. It's still cool as crap though. It's a rare sport and event where you can get so close to world class athletes. And people from other countries treat that crap like it's the super bowl, final four, and CFP all rolled into one.

It's a must see for any sports fan, and it's cheap as hell. Ticket prices are up 40% this year but you can still get a ticket for Arthur Ashe, that's center court, and all the other courts for $100.

I enjoyed the tournament that I went to. I thought that as an event to follow along with it was kinda like the NCAA tournament. Except that all of the matches are in the same location and you can get up and move around from match to match whenever you want. And also super chill with lots of booze like a baseball game.

Coco and her partner seemingly got screwed pretty badly. Watching on TV, that let called for the napkin off the court while the overhead was being hit, was ridiculous. OMG was that your napkin? Are you the reason Coco lost her doubles match?

No it was Paul/Ruud (ha!)

Also you are correct that it is a fantastic event even if you don't care about tennis. It helped that my aunts shared recommendations of which matches would be good and when to try to get in for certain matches but it isn't really necessary because the level of play is so good everywhere and you can almost always find space if there isn't a big name playing or about to play. I can't think of many non-tennis sporting events where you can see like a top 15 player from the front row of a tiny outer court and immediately go to a massive stadium with a crowd that wants to throw their energy behind someone. I'll probably take off Thursday and Friday before Labor Day to get an early round grounds pass every year I'm in New York and am now a massive Leylah Fernandez fan

On my way to the Open! Got reserved Louis Armstrong seats today and a grounds pass for tomorrow. On the docket:

Sabalenka, Ostapenko doubles, Jabeur, Gauff/Sock, and maybe Vickery. we'll also probably watch part of Sinner to start.

Woohoo!

I will go to the US Open someday. Went to W&S Open two weeks ago and saw Alcaraz, Sabalenka vs Jabeur, and Djoker. Always such a great time. Love the chill vibe.

It's so great chum, still the best sporting event I've ever seen. I'm very jealous of rusty. I don't know if I'd enjoy going to the later rounds as much because going to the side courts is a huge part of the fun, but the open is great.

Also jealous of you that you got to go to the W&S. I'm hearing that Cincinnati is losing it. What have you heard about that?

Well, the Charlotte based group that bought the tournament for a ton of money also happens to be well into the process of building a $400M facility in Charlotte. They say they may still keep it in Cincinnati, but it seems like that's probably just for negotiating purposes and that the writing is on the wall.

Definitely has me thinking more about the possibility of attending the US Open lately.

Pretty much did this minus gauff/sock and Vickery. Also got to see a set of Eubanks/Shelton doubles and they were great even though they lost. I sat right behind ostapenko's mom on the bleachers and listened to Jelena yell at her in Russian after every other shot. She carried that team BTW.

Also caught a bit of Manfol(?) before Jabeur and he was also a fan favorite despite losing.

Today going to see ostapenko singles AND doubles, Shelton mixed doubles, and hopefully some Shelton singles.

MiR is right, it's an amazing sporting event.

That dude in front of me in the last photo was in ostapenko's camp and was definitely gambling on his phone during the match. He also vaped throughout the match and we got a healthy whiff of weed from the park that got a "that stinks" reaction from Ostapenko. Good times!

Also, I didn't go to it but Wednesday night Ostapenko won a match with 80 unforced errors. The rest of the time she was just hammering ridiculous winners and yelling at her mom. It was brutal but amazing to watch.

Also this guy Ernest Wiggins is in the Ostapenko camp

https://atlasspeedtraining.com/

There were like 5-6 people in the camp cheering in Russian all the time and he'd be like "come on, believe in yourself". At one point after a nice point everyone was cheering in Russian the vaping guy announced that Ernest would be "fluent in Russian by the finals".

Jelena's mom also gave my wife a dirty look for opening an ice cream spoon wrapper between points while she was just chatting along all match long lol

Rusty, great reports! Stuff like that is exactly why I fell in love with the open. The access you get to world class athletes and their people is just insane. Talking to people who have been to other majors tells me that this is relatively unique to the open.

There is a guy who is a really loud jackass who decided he didn't like ostapenko and pretended to cheer for the other woman (pera) but was actually yelling "let's go pera" at ostapenko and then actually moved to sit right by ostapenko's team and yelled. Eventually the umpire warned him and she won a game and walked over to shoo him off and he left.

Then this jackass goes to the top of another court to taunt, embarrassing

No, I saw her in 2 doubles and one singles match though. The first doubles match I saw she was yelling at her "box" a lot, really entertaining. It was on one of the smaller courts so there was a while where it was like her, her partner, and their coaches just having a huddle. She was KILLING it Sunday night. I hate that she's playing today at noon. :frown:

Side note there are lots of complaints about selling too many grounds passes and demand just is getting ridiculous. I tried to go see Shelton and Townsend do mixed doubles and I couldn't get in without waiting multiple changeovers, so I bailed and went back to Penko doubles. I would love to go to one of the late night slates at Ashe, but you're looking at like $300 to sit on the last row the rest of the way. I plan to try to get face tickets next year when they go on sale but it might be tough.

Also, the thing with the gamblers I didn't really figure out until I went to the final set of a Louis Armstrong match and there were two Indian guys cheering really loudly for the Russian favorite in the same way as the guys I saw cheering on Zhu - like "come on, believe in yourself, you got this" and they were glued to draftkings on their phones the entire time. What I think happens is people bet on matches and then go to them thinking they can influence them, especially if they're on a smaller court. I could be wrong though, they could just be really into it.

Getting face for Armstrong the first couple of days is easy. When I went I got them the day before. I know there were some available the week before this year. I checked because I thought about jumping on a flight and just going to NYC for 24-36 hours.

It was a lot harder this year if you waited until week of. Also Armstrong only has lower level seats reserved so they're kinda pricy to begin with.

I was watching prices really closely the days leading up to me going and Ticketmaster was releasing face value tickets at Armstrong like an hour before the first match while the day before everything was being resold significantly above face. Same with grounds passes, it was infuriating and criminal.

Next year I think I'm going to get an early Noon Ashe session on Wednesday, a grounds pass for a Thursday or Friday, and a quarters or semis night at Ashe.

Yeah you're right, I was conflating Ashe with Armstrong. Why would you buy an Armstrong ticket when an Ashe ticket gets you on Armstrong too? Did they change that, can you now not get on Armstrong with an Ashe ticket?

When I was tracking prices, lower level Armstrong was sometimes cheaper than upper deck Ashe and within the ballpark of a grounds pass. So you effectively get a grounds pass with a really good reserved seat if you want to chill out a bit, and on the early days Armstrong and Ashe have very similar lineups. You can also get to your reserved seat pretty quickly.

The day I went and just had a grounds pass, I had to wait in line on the Armstrong concourse for two changeovers before I could actually get to a seat, and there was another time I tried to go and there was a long ass line just to get into the stadium. It was like a one in, one out situation.

I see. You just don't value an Ashe ticket as much and that's fair, the early rounds are almost certainly going to be blowout matches there. The start of that night session on Ashe is rough ridin' amazing though. Last time I was there I watched a set of Federer smash some tomato can then I walked the grounds for a bit. I went back to see the light show then watched a set of Serena before leaving again for satellite courts until 1AM then I promptly drove to West Virginia.

I heard on today's sports business journal that the first week, this year, had over 500,000 spectators for the first time and Labor Day weekend; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, had over 300,000 fans for the first time. 100,000 people there a day send rough ridin' crazy.

Yeah Friday was when I couldn't get into Armstrong for Tiafoe or Court 7 for Townsend/Shelton doubles because the crowds really follow the hype. But I still could do this for the 13th ranked woman in the world:
