Depth chart games or are we truly scewed in the return units
« on: September 07, 2014, 01:51:39 PM »
Is Burns really the best available KO returner?  I know he is fast and all but he flat out is uninspiring on his returns super tentative.   Sexton has good hands - I get it but is he the best available as well.  I am praying Bill is playing some mind game with Davis or Jones or Leverette or something.  Any inside information or HFIQ opinions welcome  ?

Anything would be better. I would have Judah practicing fielding punts and kicks all day every day until auburn

Not having Judah back there after what we saw last week is inexcusable IMO.

Burns is the worst returner we have ever had.  I can't believe they have him another shot after the osu game last year.  His track speed is not translating to the return game.

Yes, straight line speed is meaningless if you don't use it. Burns just doesn't have that burst off of one cut that leads to breaking KO returns.

POW 4 weeks in a row is an impressive achievement with 4 KO return TDs on the year. It was impressive to see him become an elite returner and his improvement is significant from when he was a FR/SO.

Yea, I guess his four returns for TD this season make him our worst returner ever.

Its always entertaining to look back at threads, and to be fair at the time I'm pretty sure there was 100% agreement that Burns wasn't very good at returning kicks. I know I thought he was terrible which is why I searched my own post out and bumped it.

It's okay to be wrong sometimes unless like 90% of your posts are you telling people how wrong they are for questioning the coaches.

Sean may be the best in the nation at teaching returners how to wait for their blocks and find the right hole.  Our return game has been consistently great.

He is good at teaching them to wait for that 4 man wedge to get set up.

My understanding is that much of the KO return scheme is from Dimel, FWIW.

Yeah, we've began using an illegal wedge for KO returns. Burns has the same skills he did 2 years ago.

Yeah, we've began using an illegal wedge for KO returns. Burns has the same skills he did 2 years ago.

Saw a WVU fan complain about this and was curious to what the rule is.  Definitely got away with a 3-man wedge against WVU.  Watched the other ones and did not see a clear 3 man wedge, a lot of two man wedges.  I am a bit biased when it comes to Burns, great guy, hard worker and it is awesome to have seen him make k-state history as well as lead the FBS in KO touchdowns and yards.

Illegal Wedge Formation
ARTICLE 10. a. A wedge is defined as two or more players aligned shoulder to
shoulder within two yards of each other.
b. Free-kick down only: After the ball has been kicked, it is illegal for three or
more members of the receiving team intentionally to form a wedge for the
purpose of blocking for the ball carrier. This is a live-ball foul, whether or
not there is contact between opponents.
PENALTY—Noncontact foul. 15 yards, spot of the foul, or 15 yards, spot
where the subsequent dead ball belongs to Team B if this is
behind the spot of the foul. 15 yards, previous spot with the
down repeate

I don't think I've ever seen the illegal wedge called.

I don't think I've ever seen the illegal wedge called.

I definitely haven't in college. That is a pretty complicated rule; conferences would have to dedicate a referee just to look for two or more players who INTENTIONALLY line up within two yards of each other to block.

5 dollars says we get flagged for it in the bowl game. it wont matter being up 41-3 but still it will get called.
