Title: Roku Streaming Stick vs Apple TV
Post by: _33 on December 04, 2017, 02:48:22 PM
Which one should I get?  Apple TV is way more expensive and I'm not sure why so someone please explain it to me.  I'm leaning Roku Streaming Stick.  Using mostly for Hulu, Netflix, WatchESPN.  Also I don't care about 4K.  My old ass eyeballs can only handle so many pixels.  I looked at some old threads but they were from 2014 so things have probably changed a lot?

Do you own other Apple products that you'd like to stream media from that isn't available from a standard streaming app on Roku??

If the answer is no, go with Roku.

Not necessarily.

a) I think Apple makes good stuff. b) it has got a great processor, which leads to fewer issues & c) The ability to use screen mirroring is a nice bonus.

Nevermind. Just learned something new
It's just Chromecast being a bitch.

Yeah I'm a huge apple fanboy.  I have an iphone, ipad and 27" imac.  That's the only reason I'm even considering Apple TV.  But it seems like it might be overkill for what I'll be using it for.

I'm also worried that if I get AppleTV hemmy will make fun of me for not building my own streaming device for a fraction of the cost.

The new Apple TVs are nice.  But if you don't a lot of iTunes content I would go with the Roku.  The new Ultra model also allows for an Ethernet connection.

As much as I hate to admit it, I'd go with the Apple TV in your situation, assuming it's not cost prohibitive. I prefer Roku, but I don't have the Appital outlay you do. Just my opinion as your neutral counselor.

The screen mirroring on Apple TV is superior to the Roku service, because Apple is a walled garden that traps fools like you. But since you're there, it is what it is.

I have an Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and an Nvidia Shield. Apple TV and Fire TV do not get used any more. Apple TV is ok, but it forgets passwords constantly, has poor support for the TV app and single sign in, and that rough ridin' remote...

Don’t get a roku stick, they freeze often. I’ve had a good experience with the roku premiere (+?) though

We have a couple Apple TV boxes, older ones, and we use them a lot for renting movies.   However, 80% of the use is just like CF3 described, for Hulu, Netflix, and Youtube.

I started with a Chromecast. However I moved to an Amazon Fire TV about a year ago. I have no issues with it.

my experience is apple tv is better at taming the fickle bitch of a Fox Sports Go app that is pretty important for a nu logo fan like myself

Everything else is about equal except apple tv still does not have Vudu but that is not likely a deal breaker for most.

Went with the Roku Streaming Stick.  Worked great last night.  Watched a little bit of MNF and then two episodes of Brooklyn 99 on hulu which I loved.  Now does anyone want to advise on Hulu?  On a 7 day free trial right now, seems pretty great to me.  Thoughts?

I love my new chromecast that I got for getting youtube tv, and my amazon fire tv (like the small brick, I even got the gaming edition). Though I do wish I could watch youtube tv on my fire tv. I use my fire tv for about 90% of my viewing, and use chromecast for when I want to watch fskc/sports through youtube tv.

My only real knock against chromecast is not having a remote, there is just something nice about that.

Screen mirroring on Apple TV is cool if you use iPad/iPhone much, but I like my Roku quite a bit more for ease of use and the Apple remote is the most frustrating thing I’ve ever tried to use with the DIRECTV now app.

Fun thing I like about the Roku remote:  the sound it makes when you click on something is very pleasing to me.  It's a very satisfying sound.  I'm sure you can turn it off but why deny yourself that kind of ear candy?

also (and maybe appletv has this too, idk) i like that you can search for an actor, say, and his/her entire list of movies/tv shows is displayed in chronological order, and then you can click on a movie and see where it is available to watch across all apps on the roku. it saves time from having to search through netflix/prime/hbo whatever individually. p great

This is good information to have. Thank you.

The stick we have on our bedroom tv is awful and causes me to just forego watching tv altogether.

The premiere+ is great. Fsgo, espn, sling all work flawlessly.

They have a pretty decent library now.  Quite a few movies.

TV series like Twin Peaks, Justified, Mr. Robot, Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Wire, etc.

Its getting better with original content. Man in the High Castle and Lore are a couple that come to mind.

Prime video is trash and no one would ever pay for it if it wasn't given away as an add on to free shipping

I accidentally watched "What Happened To Monday?" the other day and it was so stupid and bad that I vowed to never watch another dystopian future movie/TV show ever again.  So, no.

Yeah, it's not on the same level as Netflix.

Really 85% of content across all platforms is garbage.  That's why you need so many of them.

We have 2 apple TV's that are third generation, and we use them 24/7 without issue.  Also have a fire stick, which is fine.
