Define "late night." If it's after the 10:30 shows, I don't care.

If it includes the 10:30 shows, it's Fallon. Hands down.

Yeah, Fallon is becoming an SNL character. Not good. also just the worst at interviewing.

fallon (ie his writers) does some pretty great stuff with the guests as far as prop games and what not, problem is its fallon that is part of it so its a crap shoot whether or not its funny/good or not.

Fallon's sort of humor and amiability make me think of him as a class clown type. He's okay, I guess, but there's someone who can do funny lip-synching at every school.

And he does seem to ride on the coattails of others A LOT. It's like, "Hey, Jack Black, do something funny on stage and I'll be there, too!"

Mrs. CF3 likes Fallon, but he's not really all that funny, and pretty lazy. "Hey should we write a skit tonight? Na, I'll just play catch phrase with Rachel Ray and Snoop Dogg." Seth has yet to make me laugh. Kimmel is the best IMO

Fallon is great.  He is great because he is taking simple ideas, games, and skits and putting them on his show.  It's the type of change late night shows needed and it has proven to be extremely successful.  It also helps that all celebrities love him and he can have whoever he wants on his show.  Fallon is killing it.  I'm also excited to see what Colbert does.

fallons stuff will get old (if it hasn't already). part of a late night show and a pretty big part at that, is talking to your guests and asking them questions and getting them to engage or be interesting in some way. fallon is horrific. seth is the best. kimmel is also pretty decent. v excited for colbert.

not really a late night show guy, but i would rather watch celebrities play catchphrase than share their prepared and probably fake interesting anecdotes.

the best interviews are with total nutjobs or high people who freak out the hosts

The constant boring celebrity conversations is what was killing late night.  Even Conan couldn't spice it up enough to stay on the network and force Jay to an earlier retirement.  Getting celebrities to come in and play games as well as talk about their upcoming movie/album allows fans to see a side of celebrities many don't get to see.  I agree that Fallon needs to keep it interesting by changing up games, skits, etc.  Some really funny crap has come from these random games that have gone viral.

This thread reminds me of the time I murdered someone in cold blood who liked orange starbursts but hated pink ones.

I don't watch any of them on the reg, but if I did watch one, it would probably be Fallon.  From time to time he/his team put together some really elaborate bits that transcend the medium, imo.  I don't care about the celebrity interviews in general, though.  They're not there to see their old pal Jimmy/Conan/other Jimmy; they're there to plug their product.  And since I'm not very interested in the lives of celebrities (real or imagined, see: Entourage thread), I watch the first half and then move on to something else.

he's not having the best time ever, he's fake giggling and acting weird to save the moment because the moment needed saved. it's the cheapest trick in the comedians handbook and fallon uses it constantly and with impunity. now if that's your thing then knock yourself out, but leave those of us that aspire for slightly more than a whoopie cushion alone.

Fallon is musically talented. He is funny. His guests like him.

Yeah, that is all horrible. I wish Andrew Dice Clay had a late night talk show.

Gonna win 'em all!

he is very talented.  it's really something.
okay, what is the joke? Why are bread and I on the same page?

read a book before bed instead of watching any of that garbage and you'll probably be able to fall asleep easier then you can catch the good segments on youtube the next day without wasting precious minutes of your meaningless life with your peepers glued to the picture box turning your brain from lumpy gray oatmeal to melted useless sloppy ice cream.

daris doesn't read unless he's on a plane.

very true. i read a nice book about the 86 mets last week that my friend metalhead let me borrow. guess what that means? it's means i flew on a plane is what that means.

i somewhat enjoy them though. always have. when i was seven i would spend the night at my friends house and they would inevitably fall asleep early and then i'd stay up and watch letterman or snl with their mom. then they would wake up super early and watch to watch crap cartoons. so stopping something that i kind of like doesn't really make sense, but i am beginning to understand why all of you love fallon. it's because you don't actually watch his show. makes perfect sense now.

yeah it's funny once and then it gets old and then you slowly realize that he's doing it on purpose to get people to laugh so that the skit doesn't tank. he's basically priming them. very similar to if somone around you yawns, then you will yawn. it's a crutch and it got old seven years ago.

yeah. poor little embarrassed jimmy fallon who couldn't think of what to say and got nervous and was awkward. i bet he even giggled a few times and bit his lip once or twice. so endearing. so cute. i mean completely disregard that he's basically playing a character and had been in front of live audiences for ten straight years before his show started.

http://nypost.com/2013/10/12/johnny-carson-was-good-at-3-things-drink-dames-and-being-a-d/

Bushkin notes that Carson smoked four packs of cigarettes a day for most of his life, that he drank to excess nearly every night, that he kept a .38 in his glove box. At every location, Carson relied on an architecture of bellhops, hotel managers and personal secretaries to facilitate a steady supply of alcohol and hook-ups with women of diminishing age-appropriateness.

Jimmy Fallon's good at what he does because he steps away from the old man talk show formula and puts a new younger spin on it. He does things like video game week and has great music/musical guests every night.

I'd say Letterman was innovative back in his NBC days when he dropped stuff off a 5 story building or crushed stuff in a 10 ton hydraulic press.  Oh yeah, those Top 10 lists too.  He was doing crazier stuff that Johnny didn't do and it appealed to a younger audience.  Stupid Pet Tricks was stuff you could see on other late night shows but simply calling it Stupid Pet Tricks set it apart and made it sound funnier than "Hey Ed now we're going to see a poodle do something neat."

Colbert has an original voice/point of view. Makes you realize that Fallon is merely an algorithm constructed from test screenings.

Colbert doesn't strike me as a sketch or monologue type of guy, definitely will need to work on that. I'm sure his interviews will do fine and he'll get good guests.

I laughed at that bit harder than I have laughed at any late night in a loooooong time.  Like since Letterman was not mailing it in.

I don't watch Seth often enough to give this change a full review but if it makes him more comfotable in his delivery style and thus funnier then more power to him.  The standing opening monologue has been done by everyone for decade after decade so it's about time someone decided to change things up a bit.

Quote
Once the undisputed juggernaut of the late-night category, Mr. Fallon’s “Tonight Show,” a celebrity-friendly cavalcade of games and gags, has seen its ratings decline in recent months. Meanwhile, his politically pointed competitor Stephen Colbert, who hosts CBS’s “The Late Show,” has closed what was once a formidable gap of nearly one million viewers.

Fallon, himself, isn’t as smart as Kimel or Colbert.  He’s not as funny.  He’s not bad, but he’s mostly a function of his writers.

Fallon and his show are perfect for three minute segments that your friends from college wife will share on facebook, but not good for consumption in larger qualities on a regular basis. It gets old and unfunny watching the same fake Fallon bs every night and therein lies his long term problem. It's like a drink of something and you say yeah that's good but I wouldn't order a second one.  Boom you're welcome. #fallonexposed #darisexposesfallon #fallontruths

Agree - his “in character” satire was much more fresh than doing the same Trump jokes the same way all the other late night hosts do it now
