I like their coach. He has 2 and possibly 1 other 5 star recruit coming in 2018. I am worried he will out coach Oscar. Crap .... train just came by and scared the hell out of me - just lost a year.
They have a stud guard-forward like guy who may give us fits. I am sort of optimistic but man bigs have to give us more. Sneed has to become a monster.
-
It’s a P5 school on the road. So we’ll probably lose.
-
We'll prepare for them like we were playing duke and then play awful and it will be an awful game to watch
-
Barry Goheen is not walking through that door.
-
Vandy is pretty bad.
-
I’m interested to see how oscar handles the baseline benches and his own personal low-post defense in the 1st half.

Vandy is picked to finish 5th in SEC.
"Vanderbilt — Seniors Riley LaChance, Matthew Fisher-Davis and Jeff Roberson return from a team that should’ve at least made the second round of the NCAA Tournament if not for an astounding blunder against Northwestern. Bryce Drew is a terrific coach who will keep building in Nashville."
This will be a good barometer how we might be. I was going to call them the Comodes, but after ORU ......
-
They're 60something in the KP. I watched a half of their game earlier. Looked like garbage against a garbage team. Reminds me of how the Cats play against garbage teams.

Ya but I'm still considering driving down there for the day. We'll see.

Mawien and Mawdo are gonna have to come out of there shells. Hope IPA makes it feel like a home game

Mawien needs to figure out how to avoid early foul trouble. Refs are calling a lot of fouls on big guys that do anything to establish position down low. He has to learn that and how to avoid their attention.
-
I'm kind of liking this year's Cats team. I think we win this one comfortably.

Well, no trip to Nashville. Sick kids are killing my fun. I'll be watching ESPN3.

Oh man, I may just watch now.

Is Riley LeChance the kid from stand by me, or the dog from homeward bound?

I think it is the French version of homer hound. Seriously this guy will be a bur in the butt.
-
Revenge can be sweet. I am still peaved about a "basketball school" beating our football team. In fact I rooting for annihilation tomorrow. What do you do in a Comode? I predict our 4 Carnivores will finally all have great games at the same time. We will all go bererk, and the Comode-adores whirled away to Sewerville. Greg will be happy.
-
eff, I assumed this game was today. Probably out on watching any of it tomorrow.

My office is located right by a railroad track. Everytime I start creating a Jayhawk tribute a damn train blows it horn. Scares the hell and everything else out of me. Random. But coincides with my insides too frequently to be coincidental. Conspiracy!!

The NCAA finally adjusted one of their selection criteria in quality wins. Winning a game like this is very important.

if this game is televised in my area, i will watch at least part of it. because of the revenge factor.

Do I need to subscribe to the sec network to watch this game
-
Do I need to subscribe to the sec network to watch this game
I don't know.
It will not be on KStateHD.TV. I think it all depends on your cable provider and if they have the SEC network package. Even then, you might not get the cable channel, but have to watch on the ESPN app.
-
I might know somebody that lives in an area that has the SEC network.

Ok. I'll probably skip it then.

I have SECN but this is pretty stupid it’s a web only game

Agreed. You'd expect tv coverage considering this is a SEC Big12 matchup. Nope. They went with the women's game on sec network.

Such a weird arena

Such a weird arena
Yeah.
Also high camera angle like old OSU.
-
Apparently they are pretty good at shooting 3’s
-
Yeah maybe they aren’t so good
-
1) Vandy is 3-4? lol
2) Diarra's hair? lol
-
I bet 5 farms on the cats :gocho:
-
3) Vandy's arena? I mean, lol
-
We'd be winning by 25 if we could control a goddamn rebound.
Still, looking good.
-
The rebounding effort actually got even worse to start the second half.
-
Is Mawein high? Good grief
-
"Huh Cain't Gum Uhn!"
-
Is Mawein high? Good grief
Maurice at least could play decent high
-
wonder if wade makes those two FTs that Stockard III just hit
-
Hey we won a close game!
-
Nice win!
-
Spracne is in here trying to get a rise out of us even though we don't care about basketball
-
I can't even watch the replay. Oh well
-
I can't even watch the replay. Oh well
It's worth seeking it out to see oscar travel across half-court with about 3 minutes left.
-
Offense was very good. Sneed stepped up and Kam/Barry were solid. Wade boarded okay, no show on offense.
Rebounding is a trainwreck which let Vandy stay in the game.
-

stockard III at least showed a little something more than the other two, who were really bad on offense as well.
-
Meh. This game didn’t make me feel better or worse about the season.
-
The shitty thing about rebounding is it's just "want to". Hustle and box out, just get the rough ridin' rebound
-
the best development today was seeing fan post on the foundation about bball so i don't have to go this board and read "hot horse farts" one more rough ridin' time from reno.

Yeah, for basketball this place used to be the best. Not so much anymore, just not enough people care anymore. oscar I suppose.
-
A win is good.
ReboundING poor.
Start Stockard.
I did not believe that we could shoot 91% free throws.
I think we did better with Oscar at the end of the court. Put him by the tuba playes at home.

We have 4 Good players who on occasion can be very good but what’s our ceiling when the 5th player adds no value and the bench is meh.

I enjoy talking basketball (less since oscar) but coming on here seeing a bunch of mumped up names that i can't understand or equate to the real/actual player makes it impossible to have any desire to read or post. I'm sure the pre pubescent teens that populate this board think it's cute but it's irritating as hell.
-
Renocat is exactly what Bruceketball deserves. I can't wait until the day that we all band together and run that sock out of here once and for all, not just because it's annoying af (it definitely is), but because our basketball team is bomb again and we deserve better. That will be a great day.

Until Reno changes Wade's nickname to something soft like Heather or Dumpling he cannot be taken seriously.

I see us ending up as a 9 or a 10 seed. oscar to the tourney 4 out of 6 seasons with a conference Championship. :horrorsurprise:

We haven't made the tournament in 3 straight years

Uh. They won a play in game. So into the tourney they went

Don't like a thread stay out of it. Ain't no body else willing to say anything about our team other than that they don't. Go cry on your mamma's boobs.

This isn't true at all, I hate when people say it. There is technique to rebounding, like everything else effort certainly helps but you have to know how to rebound, our bigs don't.

I jumped on board long ago but this team is really good. I love how the guards play together. Xavier's offensive improvement is pretty impressive. We have scored 90 and 84 against power six teams. Yeah, the bigs are problematic but the team is fun, it's an extremely watchable brand of basketball, probably our best offense since Denis left.
-
...another good things is that the players don't seem to get rattled either...stockard (who is as even-keeled as anyone I can remember seeing on the court) stepping up and hitting his last 2 FTs is emblematic of that...we'll have to see if it holds up against WVU press ('Zou had a spectacular meltdown against them), but so far so good...maybe all the experience in close games is starting to pay off...

"We were standing in the lay-up line, warming up and shooting, and Rodman was standing back and watching everybody shoot. I said, ‘Hey, come on, you have to participate; everybody’s shooting lay-ups, you have to shoot lay-ups, too.’ And he said, ‘I’m just watching the rotations on the basketball.’ I said, ‘Excuse me?’ He said, ‘Like, when you shoot, your ball spins three times in the air. Joe’s sometimes has 3 1/2 or four times.’
"That’s how far Rodman had taken rebounding, to a totally different level, like off the charts. He knew the rotation of every person that shot on our team — if it spins sideways, where it would bounce, how often it would bounce left or right. He had rebounding down to a science, and I never heard anyone think or talk about rebounding and defense the way he could break it down.

I was actually gonna hit everyone up for a hoopspak soon, but with the ulterior motive of getting everyone together to try and lock down a plan to go to Portland and see Beasley when the Knicks are there.

Yep. We have as strong of a top 4 as any K-State team for a while. Both games vs P6 teams have been at 1.3 points per possession.

Quick, strong, tall, athletic big guys who can anticipate, know how to box out, seal and retrieve and have strong hands seem to be better at rebounding than short, slow and unathletic players no matter how much effort the short slow guy puts out.
-
this team isn’t good

Why do you think that, 'Clams?

I immediately thought of Rodman on this, too. Rebounding is a skill, much like blocking in football.

I am surprised by people who say we don't have depth. I feel like KState has struggled with the bench being valuable for the entirety of oscar's tenure. Yesterday I felt comfortable with everyone that oscar put in the game, no one felt like a liability. I haven't felt that way with cats basketball in awhile. The SEC commentators were gushing over how much talent our team has.
Our bigs wont be recognized as great this season, but if we can cut down on fouls our offense can be very effective with them in there.
Is it our offensive scheme that seems to leave no one in place to make a run at a rebound?

I'm not too worried about oboarding because we shoot it so well. Its defensive rebounding that is a mess.

In our case, guys don't box out a lot of the time. It isn't hard. Just go box out at least. Against ASU our guys just stood there and let the other team get boards it seemed like.
-
Our bigs are pretty soft with the ball. I think that's my biggest concern with this team. It's infuriating to watch.

Our bigs are SIGNIFICANTLY better than i expected them to be when they signed. I am thrilled with their play so far given we basically picked them up off the scrap heap. All they need to be is serviceable for us to be decent. so far they are.

The top 4 are really good and putting up significant numbers.
The guy we really miss this year actually is Bullnuts. Too bad he got himself booted this summer.

yeah it wasn't a coincidence that KSU was always a top 10 offensive rebounding team when Frank was here. It's interesting that it's backed off a bit since he's been at USC.
Also, effort is a skill that can be taught/practiced. (I haven't watched a game other than half of Arizona State and George Washington so I don't know if it's just laziness, technique, or whatever with this team. I'm guessing it's all of the above.)

If you came up that weekend, I'd punt on the okc game as it'd be lame to be stuck in portland for 3-4 extra days on your trip here, but we'd def get down there for Beas.

The dboarding issues are absolutely a matter of effort. The bigs were simply moved off their spot and out hustled. That can and should be cured. It's the only thing keeping us from being very good.

Hot take: this team is not better than last year, because oscar's teams always have a fatal flaw, and this year it's that we can't rebound or defend because our bigs are hot garbage. If I'm wrong and you're right, I'll come own it like a man.
-
Both Mawien and Sallah have pretty terrible hands and I am very encouraged that oscar elected to go with Stockard down the stretch in close game - he at least seems to be able to control the rebounds he gets too and seems so much more confident on offense.
For this team to be better we need Sneed to become start cleaning up the defensive glass like Wes did, maybe sit either Brown or Stokes so Wainwright can defend the the opponents top wing and let Sneed free rebound.

Our guards look good. They handle, pass, and shoot well and they get the ball up the floor. Of course, it's rare for a team to be successful over an entire season when so heavily reliant upon jump shooting.
The fatal problems with this team are non-existent front court, lack of a true PG, and oscar. It was great to see them win a close game at the end of regulation instead of shitting their pants. could almost consider it progress. but then recall they blew a 15 point advantage in the 2nd half. oscar's teams are all mentally weak and prone to excruciating stretches of non-productivity. I predict these issues will continue to plague this team as they begin playing real competition.

Don't like a thread stay out of it. Ain't no body else willing to say anything about our team other than that they don't. Go cry on your mamma's boobs.
I want to clarify that i am not complaining about your posts...you can post whatever you want. The issue i had was that the "board" would auto-change the actual players name to some nickname....that's what drove me away from the bball boards because i couldn't follow any of the posts. Certainly not your posts....i appreciate your zeal just can't really understand much of what you are saying.
It seems like that "feature" is gone now as i can see the actual players names now. I'm back reading at least.

It only auto-changes words if you have the filter turned on in your settings, fwiw.

Why do you think that, 'Clams?
i’ve watched every one of our games this season and know basketball
we’ve beat no one with a pulse and lost the game to the one good team we did play
yesterday’s game could have gone either way and that is more indicative of the quality of this team than the fact that they edged out a win

as long as jumpshots are 3's it'll be fine. midrange shots are always going to be a waste though. works for the warriors and rockets. i like that oscar is sort of changing with the times, but if a few more of those midrange shots are taken out, it'll make a big difference.
say 10 midrange shots are changed to 3 pointers. midrange shots are made at 40%, while 3 pointers are made at 35%. 10 midrange shots would expect to be 8 points, 10 3 pointers would expect to be 10.5 points. we'd have 2.5 extra points per game just from that.

A lot of these though they are in general improved from years past. I get the bigs not being great but they are athletic and I think over time they will continue to improve. I'm not as worried about not having a super pure point guard given how the offense actually flows a lot better than I can remember in a while and oscar's offense doesn't require as much on like one guy to run it.
I am generally impressed with how the guards play, and they attack the rim a lot of times with gusto, I just wish our bigs could be as strong. And yes, defensive rebounding much improve.
One thing though I feel that was lost in this Vandy game was the balance all around, lots of guys scored, this bodes well down the road and hopefully means we won't be as prone to big offense stall outs we've seen in years past.
-
We had to shoot our balls off to nip Vandy who sucks. 4-6 win big12 team imo

The shitty thing about rebounding is it's just "want to". Hustle and box out, just get the rough ridin' rebound
This isn't true at all, I hate when people say it. There is technique to rebounding, like everything else effort certainly helps but you have to know how to rebound, our bigs don't.
In our case, guys don't box out a lot of the time. It isn't hard. Just go box out at least. Against ASU our guys just stood there and let the other team get boards it seemed like.
Boxing out isn't important; being in proper position, eating space on a horizontal plane, anticipating where the ball is going, and having good hands are essential to being a good rebounder. You can also use your guards to pinch in, not crash to help the bigs but I don't think we do that. The guards are actually the players who box out but not in the traditional sense like putting their butts on someone's front, but you can use guards to crowd the space of the bigs by trying to move them under, out of position.
The dboarding issues are absolutely a matter of effort. The bigs were simply moved off their spot and out hustled. That can and should be cured. It's the only thing keeping us from being very good.
Effort and technique aren't mutually exclusive, you can't be a good rebounder by just trying hard, you can certainly be a bad one if you don't want to fight for space. Most of these young dudes didn't need to rely on technique and effort to rebound in high school, size and athleticism were enough. I was undersized as a big, given the level I played. I had to learn how to properly rebound and defend our I would have never played

I literally can't take you serious if you think boxing out isn't important at all.

How is boxing out exclusive from "technique"

Renocat is exactly what Bruceketball deserves. I can't wait until the day that we all band together and run that sock out of here once and for all, not just because it's annoying af (it definitely is), but because our basketball team is bomb again and we deserve better. That will be a great day.

I was wrong and you were right. We're still super shitty at defense and rebounding, but this team is good in spite of that. Good call on this squad, MiR.

Yeah, good call MIR.

i don't know about the shitty at defense part, especially 1 through 4...freaking wade is out there swatting people now...

Dear Mouse Droppings, are you going to castrate yourself. Oscar is winning. Maybe he will get an offer at a Big 10 school after the season. Wishing for losing ain't in my blood.

No, you still suck.

99th in AdjD per Kenpom is pretty bad

Yeah, we can't defend. Being good enough at offense that it doesn't matter so much is really fun though.

Baylor outrebounded us last night 37 to 19. Granted, 15 of their rebounds were oboards to our 2 but that's pretty f'ing terrible, no?

Is there a metric that balances out lack of offensive rebounds when you are shooting a high percentage?
This also might be me tucking my shirt in tight, but I have visibly noticed a greater effort to get to the boards in the lest few weeks. The effort is there, we just sometimes are dealing with unlucky bounces away from our rebounders. I'd also think that taking shots earlier in the shot clock might correlate to lower rebound numbers because the defense hasn't had to do much if any complicated rotations.

You're going to need to get that shirt surgically tucked in, this team is awful at getting on the boards.
-
We only out-rebounded Baylor 17-15 on shots they took. That stat should embarrass this team.
-
Also, Yard Dog, rebounding percentage takes into account good shooting and poor shooting. It calculates how often you get a rebound when there's one to be had. And we're god awful. Next to last in the league. KU is last somehow, but that won't continue. We'll finish last in the conference, guaranteed.

Watching the game yesterday, and a few others recently, I feel like there seems to be some merit to that. I never really felt once we were just being so completely out rebounded or that we weren't trying. We did have a few times around the rim where we were not getting boards but the way we play I don't ever seeing us so bunched near the rim that we get a ton of oboard chances, like 4 of our guys spend most of the possession outside the arc, and we either do a quick pass on the inside for an easy layup, or The Flush makes a sweet ass move to the rim, we spend some much time away from the rim that we don't really position ourselves well for rebounds, at least on offense.
At least the Baylor game specifically, their o-rebounding edge didnt bother me that much, we did a decent job of getting them to turnover the ball
(15 TO to our 10, and most of those were real turnovers to fast breaks, not stupid offensive fouls) and our defensive rebounds were 18, to their offense rebounds of 14. So we did a decent job when on defense.
-
oscar has completely reinvented the game. just shoot lights out every night and suck at defense and rebounding. I can’t believe no one has ever thought of this strategy before. we’re lucky to have oscar.

I knew you would finally come around. Hopefully Gene hammers out a long term extension for oscar and we can sustain this momentum for years to come!
-
There is no debate, we suck at rebounding. No metric can mask that. Shooting, not turning it over, and getting to the FT line are all excellent so far though.
-
sucking on the d boards is something you can overcome. sucking on the oglass is basically a death sentence to sustained success
