JC course is rough, but Abilene has a fun 18 hole course and a nice old 9 hole that used to be the country club. I haven't played the one in Salina yet either.

What is Great Life and why are your scores so terrible?
You pay $40 monthly, but you get a choice of courses that Great Life owns. You can play as much as you want, carts cost an additional $13 per 18. They aren't great course because most were ready to go under when Great Life bought them cheap, but I have fun playing them and it's very affordable. They also have fitness stuff at most locations.
Golf is a hard game.

I like golf. I like that I'm a newb because it means I can make noticeable improvements in short periods of time. It's also a great way to force your mind to engage completely in something and thereby forget about whatever other crap you've been stressing over.
i have been known to pick up and just drink beer and drive the cart cuz I suck so much ass and it stresses/pisses me off so much

Is Wildcat Creek not part of Great Life anymore? I don't seem them listed on their website.
They were only officially part for one year. Since then there was an informal relationship and you could show your WC card at a GL course and all you had to pay was the $13 cart fee. That was up until a couple years ago when I was still a member at WC, it may have changed since then.

its a huge facility, 3 stories of driving range bays all done up like an ultralounge adult dave and busters. you rent out a bay for 40$ an hour for up to 6 people. the bay has a high top table or couches and a tv and the scoring system. there is a tee box in each bay with an automated ball dispenser. you crush balls with golf clubs out into the driving range, which has various targets at different distances. the balls have microchips and you get points based on what targets you hit where. there are different games where you cant just hit at any target you want or hit at specific targets in order and you lose points for getting in the wrong hole. drink and food prices seemed standard for joco chain restaurants and was decent to good. they provide you with clubs or you can bring your own. inside they have several bars and restaurant areas as well as billiards and xbox/ps4 video game couches.

you hit off an artificial grass thing with a rubber tee if you want. the grass was fine.
the shortest target is like 15 yards, the longest is 215. past that if you hit up on the net in the middle, is the long drive trench target that is like 230 yds probably.

i'm kind of in the same boat. i've toyed with a controlled hook a few times, just haven't really perfected it so i haven't stuck to it.

Stagg Hill and Colbert both have ranges, but I'm pretty sure they'll be more expensive. Colbert allows you to hit off grass if that's important, I don't remember if Stagg is grass or mats.

When I started playing I joined and played 4-5 times a week in the summer. It's a nine hole course with 3 par 4s and 6 par 3s. Lots of different shots and only takes an hour to an hour and a half to play 9. Great deal and will improve your game.

bunter, waks and I all got memberships there specifically for this purpose. their schedules have allowed them to get a lot more use out of it than I, though.

Go to golf stores that allow you hit clubs, hit everything you can until someone makes you stop, whatever you fall in love with, go online and buy them for a hell of a lot less, like absurdly less if you want to get a year or more backs model.Thanks for that advice. Chisholm Trail is really rough this year. They only have water on tees and around greens, so the rough/fairways are about what they usually are, but something happened to the greens over the winter and they started the spring in really bad shape and have never recovered. Hopefully they get them fixed for next year.
Junction City CC traditionally is worse than either one, but this year the greens are decent. Fairways/rough also don't have regular water.
Both JCCC and ACC are only 9 hole courses, FWIW.

I love golfing by myself. I also love golfing with others. But, realizing you suddenly have a few free hours and availing yourself to a last minute solo golf round is a great way to clear your head and defragment the ol' harddrive, as it were.Exactly that. I like the solitude sometimes. Especially when I don't want to go for a run, I will just hit the links alone. I prefer having a partner, but don't mind going it alone either.

fall golf is best golf. 55 to 60 degrees, light jacket, leaves all turnt. WOW!I agree that it is better to play when it isn't hot outside. I don't mind wearing a jacket or sweatshirt to play. Fall is my favorite time of the year anyway.

When we play well we are fun to watch. I didn't get to watch, but I wish I could have seen last Saturday's OSU game. I think we'll play well and beat Ole Miss Saturday and I will enjoy it. I don't hate oscar personally and I don't let my disappointment with this season get in the way of enjoying games when we play well. And I believe this team is capable of playing well.

18 is too much but 9 is not enough. somebody should start making 13/14 hole golf courses and the sport would explode.

The problem is I gave up great life and joined Rolling Meadows instead. I can play any of the Sunflower Golf Trail courses for only $25, but I don't believe there is on in Topeka. Regardless, we will definitely get out this summer.

Give it time. Master those skills first. I mainly do it to keep up with dad and for the tournament scrambles I play with our families.Oh I don't plan on doing it all the time. I tried yellow once for fun. Would like to do the same with blue.

Tournament yesterday was super tough. I was by far the best player on my team which does not bode well. Hit a 76, taking almost everyone of my drives and fairway shots.

Update:
Shot +5 on 9 holes on Sunday. I actually par'd on 6 holes and just did poorly on 3. :) It was a fun run.
On Monday, my group shot 10 under through 18 at Lake Quivira. We had some ringers on the team. Fun to see some golfers really pound it out there. I definitely contributed on some par 3 shots and putts. It was a really fun day. 18 under won the tournament tho.

i don't know. a golf courseYou'll appreciate a dri-fit material polo if you don't have one. Shorts without cargo pockets is safest; sometimes you'll run into a no-cargo dress code at certain courses. I've survived playing ~6 times per year for the last 3 years without spikes. But i've heard it helps!

I'm brand new so I've just done the JR Par 3 course at OP a couple times. I 6 putted a hole today. :frown:I used to play a lot when I was younger. The last two years SdK and I have started playing, less this year than last. Cf3, I hope you have a great time with the sport. Bad shots are always a part of the game, but the good shots keep you coming back. Enjoy the sport.

I am not a good golfer, but just enjoy the fall and spring especially to get out and golf with others. One cousin played for Illinois, one for western Illinois, and one for Maryland.
I'm by far the worst golfer in my family, and I'm a 6 handicap. Our annual family tournament is at the end of September and I'm determined to not come in last this year.

My family golf history is nothing similar to yours. We are more baseball-oriented from childhood. My brothers and I started playing golf when our father was diagnosed with cancer. We were all young then. He wanted us to start doing activities that raised money for cancer and other medical issue research efforts. So several of us started golfing in charity tournaments. None is very good, but a few of us grew to like the game. So I play now because it feels great to be outside doing an activity I love with friends and family. I will give the true practice a chance this fall.Even 20-30 minutes a week putting a few balls makes a huge difference.Played Saturday and today. They didn't wear out so much. The grips got very sticky with something black and greasy that stained the gloves and whatever clothes I was wearing. That also seemed to rub off on the other clubs. found an interesting swing on youtube worth trying, called the channel lock swing. from what i gathered the differences between this and a normal swing is:
- open your stance but have your shoulders aimed at your target
- ball way back
- legs upright and stand closer to the ball
- don't let your wrists rotate on the backswing

have another good one for you. mysterious guy im just finding out about, goes by the name of count yog. could have been the best ever but was banned from the tour because of racism and his swing was too good and simple (apparently). shot multiple rounds under 60 when golf clubs were made of wood. beautiful, powerful swing.
speaking of great swings, i've been messing around more with the channel lock and i think it is a huge swing hack. there's some things to remember of course, but if everything comes together i can go on streaks of hitting straight shot after shot. it has made me obsessed about golf again and makes me wonder how good i could get if i practiced a lot more. really think with this swing, a consistent 14/14 fairways and 18/18 greens is possible - the swing is that good. like any other swing though, all things have to click, but it's a lot easier with this one.

I played at Overland Park on Thursday and it was amazing. 18 minutes between tee times for social distancing. I was playing two balls at a time and just ripping the crap out of the ball. No waiting around for groups in front of you or anything. This would really be the time to take up the game if you’ve been thinking about it for awhile. Played the par 3 course at Sykes/Lady with ole Wacky today over lunch....let's just say I hope he gets everything figured out before his tournament on MondayClassic case of the yips per usual after a great outing the week before. There's a Bubba Watson hole where they play you up 250 yards from the original tee box and let you hit your second shot there. ha. Like, I have no intention of ever being "good" at this point, I just want to not chunk 90% of my shots and enjoy the day. I was 100% certain this would be possible with somewhat consistent practice and some lessons. Now I'm seriously considering the fact that this isn't my sport and it may never happen.

I just laughed because I know it was the head of all golf that was watching and knew I was about to quit so he let me have that last shot so I would come back. eff that guy.

Also cut down on how many clubs you use and just get really good with a couple. I use a driver/7iron/W/56Wedge/Putter for about 90% of my shots. 220 yards to the hole after a drive on a par 5 should I bust out my woods or hybrid? Nah, I'll put those in the tree's or doof it, best to just hit a 7 iron 170 yards down the fairway.

The biggest jumps after is accuracy from distance on the approach, and then lengthening the drive so your approaches are more manageable.
Golf presents itself as driving first cause it is what you do, but you have to think of it in reverse of putt, chip, approach, drive in terms of importance.

The other thing that will require some introspection...is what do you need to feel satisfied with how you played? Obviously everyone would love to shoot a lower score, but focusing on your score might not be the best use of your time. I know for me, even if my score is total crap, if i can make good contact with the ball, and have good ball flight (like i'm not just duck hooking every shot) and make just a couple putts then i'm pretty happy. I also get enjoyment from NO SELF LIMITATIONS so like, if its a 400 yd par 4 and relatively straight, then yes i should be able to hit a driver off the tee. I realize there is probably an entire moneyball industry for hack golfers where you can be like "so the correct play is 5 iron off the tee, 9 iron, and then you're left with a 30 yard chip shot which will be your best chance at making par."
But that would drive me crazy. I want to use the best club i have in the bag for the given shot.

Also, I get that I need to work chipping and putting more. That always made sense to me and I agree, but the course I play is long as eff. If you don't hit at decent drive, you are going to have a bad time. I actually hit the 3w decent so my second shots aren't always terrible, but I also agree with Benji and I should prob just bang my 6 or 7 as opposed the more often than not chunk or chase 3w shot.

Ya know what another common reason for chunkin is not keeping your weight back during your swing. Last time I took lessons the dude gave me a drill where I tee up a ball like I’m going to hit driver but then just use your 7 iron. Address the ball like your normal would but then just put your toe down on your front foot (since I’m right handed that’s my left foot). It feels weird asf, but just hitting off your right foot is a good drill for helping you keep your weight back.
Next time you’re at the range try hitting 10 shots just off your back leg and then see if that does anything for you
I'm no golf pro, but I think this is the exact opposite of what you should do.
The golf swing is about weight transfer, back foot during back swing, front foot during down swing. The downswing is the biggest issue for high handicappers and having poor/late weight transfer is what causes fat shots and most likely a slice. Being on your back foot will lose tons of distance and almost always keep the club face open, not matter the club.
I think I'd practice only standing on your front foot with swings at the range.

SF try both and report back ITT (jk I think shooter is correct it’s keep your weight on the front leg for that drill)

Thanks golf cats. Most of these tips are pretty obvious and I knew most of them. That's what makes golf so hard I guess. The old, "just do that" tips. I KNOW GODDAMMIT!!! Some good ones in here though, thanks. My biggest issue (at least for now) is my grip. I know how to hold the club. I know how i'm supposed to hold the club, but the interlocking grip just doesn't feel right for me and it makes my right hand slip way under. When my hands are uncomfortable, I start hitting really bad shots. Just not hitting the face. As I mentioned yesterday, I was doing pretty well, then the past few rounds went to complete crap. Went to the range at lunch and spent 45 min and prob didn't hit one "clean" shot. It was rage inducing. Went back last night and switched my grip to just putting my pinky on top as opposed to locking and hit the ball way better. I know I just need to pick one and stick with it and I think that is what its going to be.
Also, I get that I need to work chipping and putting more. That always made sense to me and I agree, but the course I play is long as eff. If you don't hit at decent drive, you are going to have a bad time. I actually hit the 3w decent so my second shots aren't always terrible, but I also agree with Benji and I should prob just bang my 6 or 7 as opposed the more often than not chunk or chase 3w shot.
This is why I enjoy playing alone if possible, lol. The race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself. If I play with people who are better than I am, I sometimes get nervous, and that results in more crap shots, followed by unsolicited "tips."
Still, there will inevitably be a hole or two where I stick the approach within 5 feet and drain the putt. That's what keeps you coming back for more punishment. Golf, for me, is an exercise in Stoicism.

Guess I’m blessed that it’s been such a long time since my swing needed fixing that I’ve completely forgotten the details. When you have a pure paragon of a swing it frees you up to focus on other stuff (like in my case my abysmal short game)

yep, I actually played 18 by myself last weekend. Enjoyed it. 18 was a bit of a haul by myself so i'll prob stop at 9 if I'm solo going forward but it was still peaceful. However, I'm such a rough ridin' lunatic that I had it in my brain that I was going to score better since I had been hitting the ball well that I still made myself nervous even by myself!!! The guys I play with are pretty good, but its fine. They don't give a crap that I'm terrible. I make sure that I never hold them up in any way. I'll pick up my ball if things get bad so I don't hold anyone up. I sort of just play in the background for the most part.
Also, need to take Benji's advice and just stop going for a bit. Went back today and i'm still a rough ridin' mess. Another 45 minutes of awkward swings and crap shots. I have no idea how I went completely off the rails and its infuriating. I was really improving and having fun and it all just stopped and now I can't fix anything. :curse: Just need to stop going until my next lesson.

IMO you should never swing more than 90% unless you're just screwing around and want to see how far you can crush it.

I disagree, I think you should swing at the speed that you can be the most consistent/repeatable.
That being said, yes I would agree if you have a situation where you’d have to hit an X iron on the screws or you could choke down and take a nice easy swing with an X-1 iron then yes, you hit the longer club (unless there is a smokin hot filly watching in which case impress the crap out of her with your strength)

An easy swing usually takes you right to parallel at the top and you come through right on plane. Crushing the ball.
Personally, I do three quarter swing drills to work on this.

380 yard par 4 with a hill in the middle. I hit a decent drive uphill that went just over the top of the hill under a tree in the rough, probably about 200 yards.
I pull up and it's about 185 to the pin but I can't get any loft since I have a tree above me so I decided to YOLO with a 5 iron punch out shot.
Hit it perfectly and it landed about 30 yards in front of the green before rolling up about 4 ft from the pin.

For me, the best single single swing thought to help with a slice is to keep your right elbow in tight to your right hip (assuming your right handed). Keeps you from swinging over the top.
