Is the point of that method to help people who are really bad at math? Seems like a huge waste of time and potentially confusing for anyone who is even reasonably good at math.
I got in the top 10 at the state math competition in elementary school & that's the method I've always used in my head.
Also, if given 59+36 I would change it to 60+35, then go 60, 65, 75, 85, 95. I always got in trouble for not showing my work, then tested really well because everyone else was wasting time on the column thing & I had pleanty of time to work on the harder questions.
Different methods for different kids.
