You are right. We can play good basketball. The only embarrassing bad game last year was OK rout. We were tired and DJamer hurting with no depth any where. If we don't have injuries or reefer parties we might be able to make some noise this year.
I think another reason for little fun by fans is no hope. For example, football started with a lot of hope, hope is dwindling, and football really isn't fun this year.
We don't expect in basketball to have a magical year. We don't see any stud star saving our bacon like a Pullen or Foster. Don't blame Oscar, he didst not hire himselvie.
So I look you gloombags in the eye and heartily sneer and laugh. I am going to have fun. Cartoon names, enjoyable cussing fits at Oscar that drain pent up anger, and hope maybe Claws, Flush, Rip Hide, Gravyman, or Mantool become very good. I hope for the crowd to yell for.Meatfart, Gruntley, Hunch and Dirtman. Knowing that there is no hope you can still have fun, ask a poor guy.
-
Last week while sitting in line for Football game. I talked about an 1/2 hr to guy who has.had season bb tickets for 47 years. He sat through a lot of bad basketball. He was excited. This guy loves basketball. He has fun. Man he pumped me up. That is why I was torqued about missing practice
Ain't missing scrimmage you rain bastard godthung.

hearing the crowd go nuts to pullen's entrance hit me right in the feels

I'm hoping this year, we can bring some doom back. OSCAR MAY BE A TOTAL DORK, but I like the talent we have coming back. I like that the team is making an effort to start playing more aggressive. I like the transfers. The Big 12 is also far weaker than years past so this will just be a down year for our league anyway.

Fully agree. It will be interesting to see how fast people jump on the bandwagon. We need good basketball due to poor.football year.

oscar has master boring basketball and creating self sulking fans. Hasn't master bad basketball yet.

Denied. Doom isn't a property of KSU to be handed out to some viakoffman squad. They'll have to get their own thing.

Oscar lives in a weird world. If you look at his history, he is most likely going to grind on the bubble at a oddly low analytical ranking somewhere around the mid 30s. To achieve an oddly high NCAA tournament seeding something around 9. Going to have a couple gut wrenching loses and they are going to hurt because he is grinding on the bubble. But the truth is he isn't really grinding on the bubble he is grinding on getting mumped or rough ridin' himself on getting seed mumped.
The weird part is he has always been in a power conference that is small enough and the quality of teams to allow this to be a continuous pattern.

Thee tournament!

X and Dean looked pretty good. Diarra not bad. Some others, not so much.
Depth could be a concern, when oscar started subbing it was not good.
-
False alarm guys
-
Sample size is extremely limited through only 2 exhibition games, but Diarra might be good.

I having a great day. Big Lutheran celebration and potluck at Church
Sitting in the yard digesting food like a big bloated python snake. Dreaming about basketball and enjoying fan's stats. I think Dee-ara $ is going to be good and bring back the fun. This kid has joy 2hen he plays, and his hair ...... fun. He and Brown are buds. It is good to have 5 quality guards. I can't wait.
-
I know he's been a skeptic, but I just want to know what [you] thinks of this team so far. Maybe a decent group in Sneed, Wade, Brown, Stokes, and Diarra. :dunno:

.
This is way too long for most of you but this is what I think so far. (Reno, Sorry I can not remember the nicnames)
1. Claws is more aggressvie on offense and rebounding. Great game today except for a couple of times he did not finish at the rim. Like to see more rebounds than he got today but I think that was the nature of todays game. Big season ahead if he stays this agressive.
2. Sneed played great today in all aspects, offense, defense and rebounding. All good but I'll be watching to see how consistent he is.
3. Brown had a lot of uncharacteristic turnovers today but has fixed his shooting form. He is all league on defense now and will make an all league team if he hits shots from range on a consistent basis. Had some nice assists today.
4. Diarra looks really good so far. Want to see him against some high level competition before getting too excited.
5. Wainright is going to have a fairly big role playing defense and rebounding. If he can hit some threes it will be a big help.
6. Mawien has a lot of skills and will be provide some points, rebounding and rim protection.
7. So far Sallah has not impressed me.
8. Shadd can block shots and rebound and will get some minutes. I need to see more of him and Stockard to form an opinion on how much they can help us this year, At least they are some insurance in case of injuries.
9. Need to see more of Mcquirl. Frazier says he is a knock down shooter so we'll see.
10. Patrick had an off day today on defense and ball handling. Need to see more but he may be limited to helping us against zones and sagging man defenses.
11. Stokes did not play due to a wisdom tooth but I want to see if he cuts down on turnovers over last year.
First string looked really good today so overall, quite a few positives but we'll have to see more.
-
Thanks for the rundown with actual names
-
Thanks for the rundown with actual names
Yes. This.
[you], I hope you're having a great day!
-
Thanks for that breakdown.
I see rebounding and defense as the biggest concerns. I think this team has potential to score at a decent rate.
-

I'm not sure what my verdict is after two exhibition games so I'm sure I'll change it by Christmas and again half way through the Big 12 season.
-
Attempting to watch that on WatchESPN was rough, attempting to watch it on the new K-State app was worse.
These games used to be on the new version ESPN Full Court but this one wasn't, I hope this isn't the case all year.
-
We haven’t been this aggressive offensively in a while.
-
Picked 9/10 by SI. I hope they're wrong.
-
Picked 9/10 by SI. I hope they're wrong.
They are wrong. Like 5th or higher. Bigs meats looked good to me in the MSU EXHIBITION. What excites me is depth and fun watching Sneed and Diarra. With them the.pressure should.be off of Claws.
-
Picked 9/10 by SI. I hope they're wrong.
Its more likely we finished lets say 6th instead of 10th. The majority of the league is in the same boat. Hell 2 games separate 4th from 10th. Most of the leagues projections are based on assumed 0 values and lot of those assumptions are going to be wrong. Whole league is a mess trying to predict is rough ridin' insane.
-
we have no depth and a typical oscar weber built team, meaning undersized
-
Shane, Sneed & Brown are the only ones that look like they should be associated with good KSU basketball. Is that enough?

No doubt. Thats why Claws was one of 19 underclassmen invited to the NBA symposium in Indianapolis. The NBA didn't want to waste their time on anybody who might actually play in the league.

The big 12 could be really competitive but I don't think the big 12 it is setup to be predictable. I don't think many of the coaches have good data sets on expectations and there are some weird extremes going on. Boyton in his 1st year. Dixon and Beard in 2nd year. Prohm and Smart entering 3rd year.

-
Gonna have to earn a Wednesday slot by the slimmest of margins.
-
I think we'll be pretty good. We have a good core, and I was impressed with the new pieces. Salla (?) and Mawein (?) are more than adequate. The guards are good, and Sneed and Wade are improved.
-
Those are some tight numbers. Should be some competitive league play.
-
Bigs, rebounding are a concern for me.
Sneed, Wade, Brown, Stokes, Diarra look like a nice core though.
-
We are going to be dang proud of our guard rotation. Sneed will be TheeGravy for our solId taters. He is going to be very good.
-
Bigs, rebounding are a concern for me.
Sneed, Wade, Brown, Stokes, Diarra look like a nice core though.
I'm more concerned about turnovers.
-
i am almost excited. win a bunch of games and i'll actually maybe care
-
I think we will be able to score and play good defense but rebounding is what we should be concerned about. Hope I am wrong.
-
oscar is a master at creating expectations low enough that he can easily surpass them. It's almost otherworldly.
-
Did puffdad start posting somewhere else after the demise of Scout?
-
Bigs, rebounding are a concern for me.
Sneed, Wade, Brown, Stokes, Diarra look like a nice core though.
I don't even remember what its like to have a big that could rebound
-
Bigs, rebounding are a concern for me.
Sneed, Wade, Brown, Stokes, Diarra look like a nice core though.
DJamer defensive rebounding was poor enough to assume that randomly assortment of bigs can provide a lift. The trick will be replacing Wes outrageously good defensive rebounding rate. Brown, Sneed and Brown seemed to provide some hope Sunday.
Is it possible you can post your 100 possession table in this thread. With last years numbers too or convert rebounding, turnover and Assisit to possession rates? Just so we have something to compare against.

You wussyfied naysayer bastards, quit your bawling like a calf weaned from his moomma cow tit. Fan tell them how this is Claws' team. Look at Fan's stats. The whole point of the exhibition season was to get Claws mean and nasty and to learn to run the offense through him. He is a very good passer and smart. Throw in Diarra and Sneed feeding off of him then you have something. Deathbite is still a concern at point, mainly because of turnovers. Why can Claws play more aggressive? The Meat Monster Mob, 4 big honkers that can play post - Claws has always played tentatively, because he was the sub for center, and he could not foul out. Remember that KU game when he went agressive, dang near beat the Chicken and refs in Lawrence.
-

Wade looking good vs. this garbage team.
-
So is good basketball back?
-
No, rest of team looks disappointingly similar to the low major opponents
-
Good basketball players were recognized at half time
-
Wade, Sneed, Diarra, Mawien - very good.
Wainwright - good.
Stokes, Brown, Sallah - okay.
American - bad, not proud to be...
Team could be pretty decent. We'll know a lot more after the Thanksgiving trip. Beat Arizona State and Xavier (or just compete with X) and I'll start gaining some confidence.
-
Fan I was impressed by how well the 4 big post players moved big upgrade from Bullnuts and xWhomper. Maurice seem to be in a dope fog and Williams had poor foot work. This is the best post players we have had in a long time. I think guard depth is going to be good. It is scary to think Diarra has only been playing for just a few years. Sneed and Claws my goodness. People this is a very good team.
-
Mawien and Sallah both did some nice things. They also both have some bad habits that won't work vs better competition. For example, Mawien always has to take a power dribble even though he's a few feet from the basket when he receives interior passes. He will not get away with that from good defensive bigs in this league or other decent teams. Plus, he doesn't seem real adept at drawing fouls. Overall I was pleased with their energy on the boards and they did some things that will translate well in the Big 12. Plus, there simply aren't a lot of teams that have really good bigs anymore.
We had a high number of really dumb turnovers tonight. Silly, unforced errors. Granted, that was really my only big complaint for the team.
Also, American was without one of their better returning players.
-
I hate to say it, but we might be somewhat good. Top 5 Big 12 finish. The post players were way better than I expected. Diarra is good. Dean was awesome. I'm with _Fan. I'll buy in if we beat someone worth a darn.
-

This is an honest question, because I was only halfway paying attention last night. All I recall of Diarra is 2 or 3 out of control drives thru the lane where he didn't score. So just curious what else he did. Mawien seemed competent, so that is somewhat encouraging. It was nice to see a big lead without needing the guards (Brown, Stokes) to score.

Yeah, he's going to have to learn when to drive, but I like the aggressiveness. 4-4 from 3 with 4 assists is still decent despite the 4 TOs though.

Pretty good read on Diarra: http://themercury.com/k_state_sports/the-life-of-cartier-diarra-how-a-new-york-native/article_affa1070-fcec-54ff-bf48-f14b4240c6e3.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share
-
He's gonna be really good
-
1. Sneed showing significant improvement
2. Cartier being a factor, Having that productive guard coming off the bench
3. Steady play of rebounding, decent defense, an occasional offense from Mawein/Sallah
4. The 3 experienced juniors each taking a step forward, with their play & leadership
That's the 4 things I am hopeful will happen this year
-

So just curious what else he did. Mawien seemed competent, so that is somewhat encouraging. It was nice to see a big lead without needing the guards (Brown, Stokes) to score.
Yeah, he's going to have to learn when to drive, but I like the aggressiveness. 4-4 from 3 with 4 assists is still decent despite the 4 TOs though.
I guess I wasn't paying attention. That makes me feel better.

Pretty good read on Diarra: http://themercury.com/k_state_sports/the-life-of-cartier-diarra-how-a-new-york-native/article_affa1070-fcec-54ff-bf48-f14b4240c6e3.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share
That was the best piece of kstate sports writing I've read in a while.
By far! Super pumped for this kid! :excited:

Sad to have missed watching. I am hopeful the non-com gives those guys some opportunity for real improvement.

Thanks for the rundown with actual names
Yes. This.
[you], I hope you're having a great day!
Lol, is that your new sig SDK? I am having a good day...in downtown Chicago having some local pizza getting ready to stream the second half of the cats when I get back to the hotel! I wish the same to you, even if you're being ironic.

I know he's been a skeptic, but I just want to know what [you] thinks of this team so far. Maybe a decent group in Sneed, Wade, Brown, Stokes, and Diarra. :dunno:
To tell you the truth Fan, I haven't watched a lick of the Cats this year. New job, child, and shitty football got me like "whoa" on the Cats. I trust your insights though and will comment on this thread when I feel qualified.

Shitty preseason attendance isn't just a Cats exclusive.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171117/4a48e0973f9dd7d4136b7d1ddfb57dfa.jpg)

Anyone see that we are a dog to 2-win Vandy, according to ESPN? They give us a 38% chance @ Vandy at this point. Those of you who looked into this a bit, is that a legit line?

kenpom has it as a coin flip.
To be fair, their losses are to decent teams. It's still a game the Cats should win if we are any good this year.

Word. I've only seen two halfs of the Cats, but so far I'm optimistic that we will be a good team come March. Lets just hope we're good enough in the meantime for that to even matter.

the great thing about having oscar as our coach is that you don’t have to watch the cats to know that we are completely average. not bad, not good, just average.
i’ve watched all of our games and my dossier says the same- average
pretty good 1-3 (4 because oscar), no depth in the paint (because oscar), all together v average

The high mucky mucks on another board say Brown and Stokes are better than Pullen and Dennis. I can see that.
-

there's a lot of evidence here, trim. i don't why you would scoff. barry and stokes have lead us to at least one sorta ncaa tourney win that i can count. with oscar as the head coach, no less. a feat of sheer will and talent. and i'm, of course, not being serious.

Nobody has said that.

Right now, at this point in time in their careers, Stokes and Brown are better college players than Pullen and Clemente. They are just going to get better.

With Jake as a sophomore and Denis as a junior, we didn't make the NCAA tourney. Jake stepped up his junior year and became a great player. Brown and Stokes showed signs of stepping up their game in the two Law Vegas games. Now can they play close to that level the entire year?
-
I didn't include Denis, because he was in Miami.
But compared to one of the best guards in K-State history, Barry and Kam aren't doing poorly. They aren't quite as good, but they look solid by the numbers.

Right Now ... Stokes and Brown are eligible to play college ball, Pullen and Clemente are not. So the first two are better college players right now. If time could be turneed back and I could bring Pullen forward, he would be my point guard; he was a true pg. Stokes is not
I suppose he is good for Oscars poke and prod offense. I think it is fair to argue Brown vs Clemente. Although I never see Brown going for +40.

Ohhhhh, you took it as a question of college eligibility
-
Well, 5-1 in the first 6 games is pretty decent to start off, and the loss was a foul fest against a top 25 team of Arizona State who completely dominated Xavier.
It's not a bad start.
-
would be a great start if we played in the colonial league
-
We are pillowy soft on defense and we have like one guy that will attack the rim on offense. We will be eaten alive in conference.
-
Just as I don't think the sub par competition is a good barometer for our defense, I don't think the ASU game is either. I think that will be one of the best offensive teams we play all season.

You don't think they are any good or what?
-
I'm with _FAN on this one, ASU is a good team, and got the benefit of 3 extra players for most of that game.
For eff sakes they beat Xavier too.
We'll be fine if we can keep our offense from occasionally stalling and have better perimeter defense.

This proves you haven't watched any of the games.

Arizona State being good just doesn't pass the ear test

ASU plays the chickenhawks on Dec 10. Really won't mean much but will be fun to see how ASU performs. Right now ASU is ranked number 20.
-
Xavier is smacking around Baylor right now FWIW.
-
It's down to 5 at the half. Should be a good second half.
Vandy on sec network at 8 eastern. Preview for Cats opponent on Sunday.
-
Ya, they came back. Xavier was up 16 early.
-
You don't think they are any good or what?
i don’t agree that they will be one of the best offenses we’ll see this year

ASU's offense was OK. . .considering ~24 of their points came from the free throw line, I wouldn't assume that we will automatically lose to teams with better offenses if we can keep our fouls to a lower number.
-
Yeah, I mean I guess the 3rd ranked scoring offense in the nation is just OK. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/145 :dubious:

Unadjusted stats from 6-7 games against opponents of variable strength. I can't think of many things that mean less. :dubious:
Furthermore, 16% of those stats were accumulated against us.

I know that it might seem like "sunshine pumping" but our only loss is by two to a team that beat Xavier. . .which makes me want to think the cats have the potential to be extremely competitive.

Cats got 10 votes to be ranked. :Woot:

Because rooting for the cats is fun.

Yep. Its better than just giving myself some "F oscar/oscar sucks!" reminder on a daily.
But that's JMHO.
-
I still root for them. Even watch most of the games. I've just resigned myself to the fact that we will be mired in mediocrity throughout oscar's tenure here.

I am glad, but not euphoric yet about this team (getting there). I like the thought of being in the NCAA Tournament. I am skeptical about how far we can go. Hope we can sneak up on a couple of moron coaches, and make the Sweet 16. Stokes has to give us more than bricks and chucking things out of bounds. Sneed and Diarra will be the players that determine how far we can go.

As of late I like what Stockard is giving us.
