Title: appliance talk
Post by: sys on November 06, 2023, 12:57:35 PM
i'm probably going to buy a fridge, oven/stove and dishwasher in the next week or so.  anyone have any pro tips i should be thinking about before i do.

the only things i probably care about are the ice-maker and price, i think.  we're probably going to sell the house in less than five years, so i don't want to give the next owner stuff that's too good (unless it pays off in closing a sale, i guess).

Bosch for fridge and dishwasher. 800 4 drawer fridge has been amazing. One of the most affordable fridges with dual compressors.

I got the full suite of LG stuff. I didn’t like that the bosch water/ice dispenser was inside the fridge. Was gonna get a bosch dishwasher still but supply chain mumped that all up. Been happy with the LG stuff so far. Fridge has the craft ice and regular ice, plus the window thing on the door that you knock on to see your beer. It’s a dual oven in the same space as a regular slide-in one would be.

the inside water thing is weird to me too. I don't use it much so I kinda like the cleaner look.

My Bosch dishwasher has a tray at the top exclusively for silverware which avoids the basket taking up space on the racks.  I enjoy that and think it gives better results as well.

i think i want outside ice.  but maybe that's dumb because i've got to open the fridge anyways to get the beverage regardless.  still seems like the ice should be outside for some reason.

def want it to make different sizes of ice or be able to crush it and stuff.

does it matter to people if all the stuff is the same brand?  i don't think i care, but if future housebuyers might look down on having a mix of brands, then maybe i should care a little.

typical household fridge has one for the freezer then that air blows over into the fridge side (somehow I don't really understand) so dual compressor let's those sides work independently for more consistent temps. The high end ones like subzeros have dual compressors.

they frequently do some sale with a $500 credit or gift card or something if you buy appliances over whatever amount.  It's a lot of spend, but if you're buying a bunch of appliances I think it makes sense

i think it only matters when the finishes look different and those appliances are right beside each other. like even if the metal is the same color one brand might have a more shiny finish vs the other. When we remodeled our kitchen i think we were going to go w/ a samsung suite but their definition of fingerprint proof or smudge proof or w/e was laughable so we went w/ LG.

also the hot water pump in our bosch dishwasher crapped out a few months ago even though the unit was only like 4 years old at the time but i've never otherwise had a bad experience with bosch nor have i heard of others having bad experiences. it was weird tho.

On dish washers, I think it’s worth it to get the really quiet ones.

You didn’t mention clothes washers, but never ever buy a front loader washer again. I made that mistake. I will soon replace my expensive front loader with a cheap as eff top loader and be blissfully happy again.  The front loaders smell bad, the regimen to keep them from smelling is arduous and ineffective.

On ovens, be sure to find out how fast it takes them to fully warm up. I have a stainless steal good looking oven Thant matched perfectly and all that, and it takes a bagillion years to warm up. Terrible.  Live and learn on that one as well.

On the stove top, many different theories by fancy cooking folks. For me, the reality was “which one is the easiest to clean.”  I bought the glass top, and glad that I did. I even cracked the corner of it, and I am still glad that I bought it.  I would have never thoroughly cleaned the other kinds.

Is your LG wifi too?  We bought this fridge last summer, but it was about 1" too wide, so ended up getting an LG that has the dual ice makers but doesn't have the see-thru door/compartment.  It was a great decision because we very rarely buy ice anymore.  My wife brings home several 16lb heavy-duty bags that are zip-lock and we use them for ice bags.  Also, neither my wife or I use the wifi features, but if you use it tell me what it is good for?

We have different brands but they all match.  They all have stainless steel faces and black accents.  Seem to work for us.  BTW. it all started about 5 years ago and I bought a stainless steel overhead microwave and all the other stuff was white.  I didn't know what I was getting into, that is, purchasing an appliance without the wife picking the stuff.

Have an appliance guy out next week.  The handle on right sigh of range door came free and smash into oved door external glass and spiderwebbed it.  In addition, all my burners on cooktop are burning at rocket booster level and one of my igniters for a burner is doing the clicking to infinity thing even after lit.

Appliances, man.

buckle up boys.  our dishwasher hasn’t been cleaning dishes very well.

well, mrs clams thinks the dishwasher doubles as a garbage disposal and barely rinses her dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.  i’ve tried telling her that she needs to rinse the food off of the dishes but she’s convinced i’m a mongloid and none of that rinse nonsense is important.

there’s two filters in our kitchenaid dishwasher, but they can only catch so much food before the pieces start clogging up the spray jets.  i’ve taken the spray arms apart and cleaned the food out of the jets with toothpicks.

she also puts approximately 2x the amount of dishes into the dishwasher every load.  despite me telling her that we need to do more loads of less dishes.

finally, she bought these large plates that stop the middle spray arm from spinning fully around because she lowered the top drawer down so she could fit her many tall travel coffee cups into that drawer.  i explained that there’s only two spray arms in the dishwasher and if one is stuck, we’re reducing the efficiency of the machine by 50%, she reasoned that the plates weren’t in the way, despite me showing her that they obviously were stopping the spray arm from spinning all the way around.

so i’m like ok let’s call a repair guy to come check on the machine and I schedule him to come on tuesday while she’s at work.  he’s here for about five minutes, testing everything and he’s like, your machine is in perfect working order.  i tell him that I know that, and then give him basically everything that i’ve told you guys in this post and that I was paying him that day to write down on his appliance repair invoice that dishes need to be rinsed, the washer was overloaded, and the top drawer needed to be raised.  he did as he was told and he left, I went back to work, leaving the invoice (w/instructions on how to use a dishwasher, something most learn in 3rd grade) on the kitchen island.

she got home and reviewed his analysis and now does the crap right.  i’ve not said a word except go cats.

This is some very high level domestic partnering being done by clams.

I admit that when I first saw the length of the post I was like “Oh man, clams is going to drop his famous hard hitting appliance feedback on us!”

Then, I read the first sentence and was like “OK, this might need to be moved to the handyman or home maintenance thread, but might as well read this bitch while I am here, and just move it after I am done.”

But damn, then I read another paragraph and I was all “eff, my boy clams sounds like he maybe got in over his head with this domestic partnership, I fear the remainder of this missive could be disastrous for ol’ clams.”

Luckily, I had the courage and strength of character to keep reading…for what we learned was neither disaster nor dismay, and rather the wisdom of a mother rough ridin' silver back skillfully keeping the troop in harmony whilst enforcing order.

God works in mysterious ways.

i ended up ordering all lg stuff, from costco.  thanks to all who contributed helpful advice.

happily the supply chain problems seem to be worked out these days; i actually paid less than i was anticipating, which hasn't happened on much over the last three years.

i decided on a counter depth fridge, which i expect i'll regret almost as soon as i get it, but costco anticipated my fears and were giving away a free baby fridge with the counter depth fridge, so i decided to give it a try.

Very happy I went with counter depth but I have a unique layout where every inch saved by counter depth directly adds an inch to an important walkway, and gives more space to be looking into or loading up the fridge. No space issues yet, but you have to be more thoughtful/tetris-y with the freezer.

Random question....You know that area where you put the detergent on the door of the dishwasher when you wash the dishes? You put the detergent in then close the flap but somehow when the dishes are clean the flap is open and the detergent is gone. How does this happen?

Are there elves in my dishwasher that open it at the right time?

Science?

We just yanked the old school propane range out of our kitchen in MN and put a dish washer in its spot. Going to use a fancy counter top convection oven air fryer thing and a hot plate instead of the range. Good trade IMO.

i had one of these pups die on me a few weeks ago

https://www.nfm.com/ge-profile-1-7-cu-ft-convection-built-in-microwave-oven-in-stainless-49745086/49745086.html

it was a pretty slick unit, a microwave oven and a regular oven combined, built in right above my regular convection oven thing.  all-in-one is the term.

the son of a bitch was 14 years old!  it died!

nfm had the updated model in stock so I bought the son of a bitch!  had her delivered two days later!  mrs clams said hey slow down there, bob villa- we gotta pay someone to install this son of a bitch!  good grief, you boys should have seen the look on her face when she watched me slide the son of a bitch into the built-in cabinet and plug it in!

hold up!  about 3/4 inch before I had the son of a bitch slide in flush, I couldn’t push it in anymore!  they added a 2” wide by half inch deep notch at the very end.  I buzzed right over to “ace” hardware and bought a file, went on home, and got to filing that cabinet to accommodate the new notch so my new unit would fit flush.  was filing that wood the best way? idk, it was about 25 minutes of hard core filing.  who knows nowadays.

this concludes tonight’s monday night convection-microwave oven appliance chat
