Title: Software thread(computer related)
Post by: The Big Train on October 09, 2014, 09:59:43 PM
So what is the best software for x situation?

I am getting tired of using paint for everything, now paint is cool and all but I'm pretty sure it's not the best for manipulating images.  _33 what do you use for your vids and photos?  I think chunkles and Dual Ju  would also be great contributors to this thread.

Thinking about investing in photoshop cc.  Not really a fan of the business model they changed too but w/e they are BITB.  Also this thread is for any software suggestions, not just my own needs.

maybe try gimp. it is free, so that's good. kind of sucks compared to photoshop, but better than paint. also, free.

i find inkscape useful for certain things. free too.

Photoshop isn't any easier to use than gimp, but there's a video tutorial online for just about anything you want to learn how to do.

yeah i mean i havent really invested the time into gimp.  maybe because i know photoshop is far superior and is worth the time to learn.  having the multitude of products from creative cloud at my disposal i would put in the time and watch the vids to really make it beneficial

Yeah Gimp and Photoshop are both hard to get used to but great when "mastered"

After some tutorials, I liked adobe premiere way more than vegas for video editing. Photoshop is so deep it's almost too much to handle

i haven't used gimp in like ten years but it seemed fine in most of the basic tools you'd use to BBS with 90% of the time, like layers and the pen tool.  the concepts/"difficulty" are similar in my casual opinion
Title: Re: Software thread(computer related)
Post by: The Big Train on October 09, 2014, 10:41:09 PM
i mean paint is fine for bbs stuff, most of the stuff i make is just for fun.  using photoshop and premiere and stuff would be non-bbs related for the most part

I have a consumer version of photoshop (elements 12). I like it, hard to get used to, I just haven't invested the time into it to learn it.  I kind of wish I'd gotten lightroom instead.

not really familiar with whatever might come standard with the os nowadays

Just curious, what core concepts do you think are lacking from any of the 3 undergraduate degrees offered by the CIS department to qualify a graduate from one of the three in calling themselves a software engineer?

sure. there are a few that say i like programming but only want to take 4 courses from CIS and do comp engg, then go somwhere for high level programming and flounder. but really, theres nothing worse than CIS grads who market themselves as software engineering grads from kstate. sorry, we dont have (undergrad) software engineering. its a specialty.
Just curious, what core concepts do you think are lacking from any of the 3 undergraduate degrees offered by the CIS department to qualify a graduate from one of the three in calling themselves a software engineer?

entirely different accredidation processes. Both accredited by abet, but comp sci by CAC and software engg by eac. The term "engineer" brings certain expectations of courses and applications, and is a big word in this context.

The software engineer job title is just a word. Your comparison is like claiming a difference between software developer and software engineer. They are the same thing. The job title usually says engineer but it means nothing.

Its ok, 3maw is just of a mind of the Dean Robert's mentality that CS majors aren't real engineers.  Its a stigma the department is used to.  Its a fairly groundless accusation, drafting board engineers just get all bent out of shape at the thought of an engineering discipline that doesn't produce anything tangible being considered part of engineering but it just basically shows a lack of understanding/appreciation for the discipline as a whole.  Basically 3maw's the worst kind of people, no big.

Goodness you guys are throwing such a fit.
software engineer vs software developer - those are job titles assigned by the company who really can within small limitations give you a huge range of titles that are the same work but vary from company to company . One summer i was a software engineer intern for a company, another summer i was a student programmer.
Software engineering vs computer science - those are degree programs set by the university and accredited by the appropriate people. I'm not saying CS majors are not worthy of the engineering tag, jesus I'm not a rough ridin' elitist. One of my cs friends got lectured by a company because he put down he was studying software engg, when really he was specializing in it. His employer got curious, called, and was told by the deans office there is no undergrad software engg major at ksu. I guesd this was an issue with their hiring policies. Anyway, he learned the difference then. there are universities who actually have a software Engineering degree program, so they are actually two (very slightly) different things in this context.
also great project. I think I have my chess code from freshman year somewhere.
I'm glad that we are pulling cis majors over into phase 4 with ece because ece needs to learn how to program.
and also, screw tcr. I'll agree with you he was very condescending to the non engineering majors (ATM, CNSM, CIS). No one in the dean's offices and not many of the big wig donors liked him. Even to non consulting interested engineers, he was an ass.

For the record, about 3 years ago, the CIS department started offering a Software Engineering degree.  They now offer 3 degrees, Computer Science, Information Systems, and Software Engineering.  CS and SE are very similar from what i can glean looking at the course load, just less intensive coding work and more documentation/high level design work.

I think the SE degree is masters only. They tried to get ECE and CIS to collaborate on an undergrad SE degree a few years ago, and they are apparently hoping that with phase iv, now with these two depts a floor apart, hopefully something works out

There was a handful of interdepartmental courses offered when i was getting my undergrad.  Dr. Lehnhert (sp?) had a pet-project minor for Embedded systems that was half CE half CS classes but it was discontinued when he retired in 2008... actually it looks like its still offered

Embedded Systems with CS Degree

    Technical Electives: CIS 621, 622, 721, EECE 633 (6 hours total)
Unrestricted Electives: EECE 431, 733 (6 hours total)

But SE is offered as an undergrad as a specialization track of the BS CS, same as the masters program

Right, it's a specialization. just like how kstate doesn't actually have a nuke engg degree program. It's just a 5 course specialization of ME. The degree is still mech engg, but says nuclear option. I knew it was a specialization, but it's just not an actual degree offered at Kansas state.

Its not treated that way, exactly.  They have divergent requirements.  But i don't know, they started offering it after i was out of there.

I hadn't heard of these until now. I would assume that it works like the Chromecast and if it does, then don't do it. I don't think that type of wireless technology is up to par yet and you could have a bunch of performance issues. I have a Chromecast and it is near impossible to stream games from my laptop.

It's essentially the guts of a computer in something the size of a flash drive that uses what you plug it into as a monitor.  I don't think it will be streaming anything but would use wifi to connect to Internet i guess.  I currently use my chrome cast with an android tablet with Bluetooth mouse and keyboard right now but it's kind of weird.

ww - i'm looking into it as well. it's competitively priced and i think it could be a great media center (if nothing else). Yes, its way more than a chromecast or even an apple tv, but those are a different market. I don't personally believe its stats are crap - no, you wont be able to play counterstrike or use solidworks on it, but it can still do great things with a quad core and 2g of ram, and 32g of storage..expandable up to 128 i think. it also has bluetooth in it, so again, good for media. I could probably get by doing my morning routine on it. It'll probably flop in consumer markets but i could see it doing amazingly in corporate markets. companies will eat this up for conference rooms or shared space/meeting rooms, etc.

What do you all think of the apple watch? Personally i think it will gain more ground than it's android counter parts. I know that it's a piece of hardware but what do y'all think?

that market is crap right now, so I have no doubt it will do better, unless the price is too high(it is). my questions is why buy it?  what does it do that my iPhone doesn't already do better, oh and you have to have an iPhone already to even use the thing. I mean it's a cool idea but for practicality sake, no thanks.

i have a samsung gear 2 neo, and i love it. for one, I can't wear like 99% of other watches because i'm allergic to metal, so this works great. second, it tracks heart rate during running/biking/hiking. Its also nice while biking/on motorcycle to use. i have my phone in my pocket or in my backpack, and i can check my messages on it at stoplights/when i pull over, i can control music thats playing in my helmet or headphones, etc. its also fun to use at bars and turn off TV's when KU fans are watching big 12 tourney in aggieville  :fatty:

I'm sure apple's watch will still kill it (compared to other wearables now) as they have such a cult following. I think the wearables market has a ways to go, but again, my watch is great and i use it all the time.

ww - i'm looking into it as well. it's competitively priced and i think it could be a great media center (if nothing else). It'll probably flop in consumer markets but i could see it doing amazingly in corporate markets. companies will eat this up for conference rooms or shared space/meeting rooms, etc.

most corporate setups have a VGA/HDMI/MiniDisplayport setup in their conference rooms for laptops/ipads/iphones and some even android.  this is an honest question but why buy a $150 stick that needs a keyboard and a mouse for a corporate office when everyone already has everything loaded on their ipads and stuff?  seems like a huge waste of money over $30 in adapters for much better devices.

My problem with web development, as well as most UI frameworks is that I wouldn't necessarily classify it as programming, as just hacking things together to get them to work because no matter how elegant the framework it never actually provides what you end up needing.

Guys, the cloud man, it's not that great.  Why do people think it's great?

You know what it gives you?  Less self determination on when to adopt updates, less (zero) customizations, and lifetime commitment to license fees with your provider and a complete relinquishment of all buyer power against them....and a return to a life of "work arounds" in an ever increasing sea of MS Excel and Access formatting and reformatting to play nice with inflexible Cloud integrations.  Oh, and I forgot to mention an exceptionally more hackable environment.

What do you get?  The ability to simplify the Sys Admin function and cut some FTE's, and the ability to trade down on developer expertise from pricey ERP guys to Excel macro-do-it-yourselfers.

Worth it?

Only if you believe that your business is actually pretty simple and that your competitors (or a software company) can easily replicate your most critical back office business functions and make them repeatable for other businesses that have no font office functions in common with yours.

If you think your back office is no better/different than anyone else, and you want to fire IT guys, and commit now to a realistically irrevocable cost stream to your software company, then warm up the cloud mother fuckers.

I think web development is pretty great. I just did my senior project with cordova/phonegap to create a ios application. I chose to do it in cordova/phonegap because I'm very familiar with web languages. I used bootstrap with angularjs and html5. It turned out really great and I had fun making it.

I don't understand the hate for web development in this thread.

I'm more talking about trinket software and Microsoft Office. And even hybrid cloud deployments w/ other functions and workloads moving to the cloud. I don't know of many companies that are the best at what they do because their IT department is awesome.

And customizing and putting off updates is one of the main reasons so many ERP platforms are mumped to begin with.

OK, that's helpful to know.

For really large companies (I'm talking $Billions in Rev on up), their ERP systems merely reflect the complex requirements of their complex businesses.  Customizing wasn't merely some luxurious half baked idea, it was critical to be able to process their volumes with an acceptable level of accuracy.

I've seen the "work arounds" to avoid customizations at places like this, and they involve about a million spreadsheets and a CFO who has 20 different people yapping at him with 20 different reports who each have a different version of the "truth."

A Cloud based ERP package can work well for a smaller firm, or many professional service companies for example  (law firms, brokerage, consulting) or companies with very sophisticated front office systems that merely need to jam the GL results into the ERP (but then you are just trading one complex system for the other).

There is a hybrid model, where updates are pushed and queued and the customer gets to selectively adopt them when the timing is right for their own internal retrofit, testing and QA work.

Post by: Pete on April 26, 2015, 08:47:45 AM
I mean, I say that, but the clear momentum in the market is to cloud.

Software companies are bonusing sales guys 3x to 7x more to sell cloud offerings vs traditional on premise alternatives.  These is because the revenue is stickier, and Wall Street loves it.

I know many companies who opted out of big ERP support years ago, and hired smaller outfits to give them a skeleton support service.  This scares the crap out of big ERP companies.  You can't do that with a cloud package...you stop paying and they shut your access down.

If you want to get into the software biz, my advice would be to either learn to develop on SAP, or be a functional Cloud guy....those will be the best jobs going forward

Wireshark is my go to.  Nothing tells a system admin "It's not a networking issue, it's a server issue" like a .pcap.

just read a bunch of stuff on iOS 9 and El Capitan, and im pretty excited for them to come out later this year.  the split app view for iPad and Macbook looks awesome, and notes may actually be useful now.  i still wont use apple maps but at least it looks like they are at least making it respectable now. PIP also looks pretty cool, I imagine its gonna be basically identical to what the youtube app does currently. obviously making everything faster is always a plus and im pretty jacked about a swift upgrade.

Zip protocols come with build in checksums... So if there was an error downloading your file and it didn't copy exactly as it should, and it was very important that every one of those 3k bytes be correct as in the case of a license file, a zip file would help ensure the expected behavior.

it comes out tonight but it's probably got a super long wait list, I'm assuming it will be a day or two before downloads start for anyone just signing up, but probably a lot longer.

gonna get one of my VM's signed up tonight when I get home. if you can wait a couple weeks it will probably be better if you want most of the major bugs to be worked out already. these first couple weeks should be interesting

the way it was built, if your computer runs fine on windows 7 or 8, it will run fine on 10.  the hardware minimums for 10 are the exact same as for windows 7 & 8.  which is pretty crazy that they have added a ton of functionality and features, without required hardware performance, which is part of why they are giving free upgrades.  also because they have terrible software migrations compared to apple

I heard a while back that they would be upgrading for free even to those on pirated versions.   :dunno:

It was their way of finding out who has it to better control piracy of Windows in the future, or something.

Whenever I hear that a super big company is doing something big for free, it makes me think that Microsoft found some super vulnerability or something and think it would be more cost effective to do this for free than to have something major happen and have them get pinned as liable.  I am normally a realist, rather than pessimist, believe it or not.

I was just reading about this today.  If you have a invalid licensed windows 7, you'll just end up with a invalid licensed windows 10.  I have quite a few good spec'd XP machines that could easily run 7 (and therefor 10) and thought about upgrading them all on the same 7 license, just to see what happens when i upgrade them all to 10.

I haven't upgraded yet....

I want to know what changes this "free" upgrade is getting me....

I read that Solitaire is no longer free as it has been since the beginning of Windows. In Windows 10, the free version of Solitaire is ad based and to get rid of the ads you have to pay. Now I don't really care too much about Solitaire, but what other stuff am I going to have to pay for that I can use for free in Windows 8.1 currently?

it's a full version of windows, Microsoft wants as much OS migration as they can so they can develop more applications and attract developers back.  it's not like a trial version with limited functionality, it's just the first time windows has given an OS upgrade in this model, it's the same as the OSX upgrades for Mac

as far as free games and stuff idk, you will probably have to search for the specific games or applications to figure out which ones have changed. I haven't looked to see if there is a master list or anything

We are using it to write some pretty simple scripts. Mostly I need to be able to run these scripts and the guy who is writing them decided to use Powershell. But also I am going to write some of my own but it has been forever since I actually did any of that..... and the guys that know more than me suggested to use Powershell.   :dunno: The only programming language I have ever really used is Fortran.

also don't pay for it, the $.99 and free one are the exact same thing I think

well alright.

so this was with 2 pieces of software that microsoft makes(visual studio and office) and im sure it will happen with other software that use .MSI or their built in installer.  if the installer fails for whatever reason, after it fails, instead of stopping the actual installer executable in the background, they keep running.  the way windows is set up you can only have 2 install/uninstaller executable's running at the same time.

so if 2 installers fail, you can't install or uninstall anything because there are already 2 of them running.  well there is a program that will help aleviate this issue, but if the installers are already running, it won't work.  in previous versions of windows just restarting your computer usually stopped one of the executable installers, or turning them off as autoruns when you boot.

well the bug is it doesnt work that way and you have to manually stop those executable's from running, or you will never be able to install/uninstall anything else.  its a stupid bug and needs to be fixed pronto.

Alright you guys, I'm gonna start a series ITT that will be similar to the stadium comparo thread, but for Operating Systems.  Once every couple of weeks, or week, depending on how busy I am, I am going to review a different Operating System.  Based on how it acts and works I'll use it for a few days and give you guys my thoughts on it.  I find them very interesting so maybe someone else will too.  Feel free to add your own too!

This first one I just got tonight, so I will probably do another update after a few days if I like it.

First up:  CentOS 7        https://www.centos.org/
Hardware setup: Quad core Intel i7, 8GB RAM

After you get everything loaded and installed this is the main landing page.  Just went with the default background.  Apparently this is the first 64-bit distro that they have released, as all previous have been of the 32-bit flavor.  The bottom right corner comes with 4 desktops, didn't mess around with it a lot, but click to cycle through them.  Like many other Linux distros most of the navigation stuff is at the top, but unlike Ubuntu there is no sidebar by default.  With the hardware setup, I thought it would be a little faster than it was.  It wasn't slow by any means, but not as snappy as most clean installs are.

The main file explorer looks a lot like Windows 10, but is also very similar to OS X, granted most of these all look the rough ridin' same.

Comes with Firefox as the default browser, as like many other distros.  Has several different programs that it comes with and these are the 'Office' equivalent.  They look kinda sketch, but without having used them yet, I can't judge a book by its cover.

This a program that came with it, called Empathy.  I guess its a instant messaging program, not sure but probably by default it connects to other CentOS users, but as with most open source software, it probably works on everything else too.  Just thought the name was kind of interesting.

PC Magazine stated in March 1983 that "WordPerfect is very impressive, a more than full-featured program with a few truly state-of-the-art goodies tucked into the package". It cited WordPerfect's inclusion of mail merge, footnotes, and macros—all missing from WordStar—as well as "virtually every ... feature that one ought to expect from a higher-priced program" including find-and-replace, bold and underline display, and automatic paragraph reflow.[52] BYTE in December 1984 noted the application's built-in print buffer, ability to show bold, underline, and centered text, and extensive math capabilities. It criticized the quality of the spell checker and difficult tab settings, but concluded that "its powerful capabilities far outweigh the problems mentioned".[53] Compute! called WordPerfect "excellent". It especially praised the clean, uncluttered screen and fast spell checker.

Yeah I mean I have plenty of room on this specific drive.  Time machine does incremental backups between fulls if you do them regularly.  I just didn't think it would be THAT big/change since my last one.

They are basically just consolidating the 3 degrees they had into just CS.  Long story short they have had IS since the late 90's and it hadn't changed with the times much.  They are gonna focus more on CS degrees with an emphasis in a area, with tracts from like Junior year on.

Ah, this makes more sense. My junior year they changed the format of the IS degree to change with times, as you said, but I guess they decided to not continue. So, with the new CS degrees, they will be able to choose like a Business tract if they want?

Yeah they wanted to have a more defined degree and skill set for new graduates.  Last I heard they wanted to have like 8-12 different tracts ranging from cyber-security to business to sys admin to software engineering etc.

This spring was the last semester they were accepting new IS students and fall would enforce the change.  If you are currently in IS or joined this spring nothing would change, and they will spend next 4 years getting you through.

Should be a good laptop.  If I'm gonna spend close to 3k on a laptop I want it to have everything I want, and the new MacBook Pro's coming out this summer are going to have it.

What configuration(RAM, SSD size etc) of the XPS did you get?

15.6" screen
2.7GHz i7 Skylake
32 GB RAM
512 GB PCIe SSD
1920x1080 screen
Nvidia® Quadro M1000M w/2GB GDDR5

I was a little disappointed with the resolution, but I didn't really want to go up a level for touch screen.  I'm not a fan of that for some reason.

With a screen that size, the difference between 1080p and 4k is so minimal that it doesn't matter.  But still.

It's usually in the bios or if you bought it pre-configured it will have it on the invoice.  Raid 1 is mirroring, so you have identical copies on 2 separate drives.  The error means one of those drives is failing or has failed. The reason you don't have any change is because you still have a full copy on the drive that didn't fail.

Raid 5 is a parity bit, but you have to have 3 drives for this setting.  Having that external backup makes replacing that failed drive less urgent.

Yeah, it looks like there's just two drives (C:/D:) but it doesn't look like it's mirrored?? The D: drive looks to have full capacity with nothing on it?

That being said, I have no idea what mirroring looks like but assume it is the same data on each drive?  I know virtually nothing about servers btw.. so with data that is important backed up to flashdrive it's less urgent?

When a drive is failing it's usually a mechanical issue with the drive, which means data can't be read.  So there may be a flaw when trying to read it, which makes it look empty/full.

Yeah, mirroring is 2 exact copies of each other, it's just redundancy for your data.

When a drive fails with raid 1 you still have your data, it just means if the good drive fails there isn't another backup.  While it's important to replace that failed drive, having an external copy(flash drive) gives you the redundancy of multiple copies.

Not too worried about expensive, more worried about DIY server maintenance and making a mistake that causes major issues.

Scientific Linux 7 is quite pleasant and one of the more refined Linux distros I've used. It even has it's own virtualization software that comes standard, so I can run a vm INSIDE another vm  :Wha:

If you guys haven't upgraded to Windows 10 you better do it soon.  You have a month from today to upgrade it for free.

I've had Windows 10 on my laptop since last summer and love it.  I'm about to upgrade my work computer to it this week from Windows 7.

There have been a ton of those yes, an Microsoft doesn't seem to care.  There was a lady in California that sued Microsoft because it mumped up her business computer.  She won and got a small cash payout.

If you knew how there was a way suppress the upgrade process.  We do it at work through a group policy.

No, but putting statements that are generally used about rape into another context shows how ridiculous they are. Its called satire.

it may have rolled around some prior to the cops getting to the store but the suds were ice cold and the can didn't blow up/foam me when i cracked the Molson.  but i really don't think it rolled around.  they even told me that it didn't roll around.  that little space where the swat "gear" goes in their trunk is pretty tight.  those yeti coolers are really something else.

I just have one plot with one curve on an x-y plane. I can do this by hand, I just wanted something that would be more precise than me reading off a plot.

For this case, since it is only 1 plot it is not worth paying for software to do it. I might need to do more in the future, so maybe it would be worth it then.

I have never heard of those but they look like either would be fine.  We use LogMeIn Rescue at work and it works pretty well.

If you were just trying to connect to a computer from Android or iOS I would say use Chrome Remote Desktop.  It works for both Windows and Mac remote connections.  Unless you are controlling employees devices idk why you would want to connect to android devices but who knows.

Licensing and data are housed on the cloud (can even access applications from it), but yeah, it is basically the same as the latest version of office.(only noticeable difference is our outlook mailbox limit went from 200 mb to 50 gb)  With my company's contract, each employee is given 5 licenses to install office on their personal devices which is an added bonus.

Everything that's been said is true about O365. I will say the one difference is Microsoft includes the black theme ONLY with O365 and not the stand alone license.

Also Visio doesn't come with the standard O365 licensing so if you use that its extra.

O365 licenses can be combined across levels from Enterprise all the way down to Exchange Kiosk (for just a webmail mailbox).  We utilize three products in our licensing: Business Premium (includes the desktop install), Business Essentials (provides online Office apps as well as most of the other goodies), and Exchange Kiosk for users that only need a mailbox.

These examples aren't pretty, but they're functional.  You can basically make excel look as non-excel like as you want with a little vba in the background.  And you'd read in non-delimited text basically like you would with any other program.  I make a lot of dashboards for a variety of projects to track or report and they all pull in data from a database or text files.  But, since I don't know what you are wanting to do, this may or may not be helpful.

I have an Arduino uno board and a 5v relay that I get weird with on occasion.

Tell me more.

How hard would it be to program a basic PI or PID function with both digital open/close and like 0-10v or 4-20mA output?

I just followed an instructables on how to mimic capacitive touch on a phone with a relay on an arduino uno.  I definitely have no idea what what any of the above means.

I would like to be able to utilize a SOAP client to get NOAA weather data.  Is there a way to utilize a chrome plugin or something in place of building my own (0% chance I could do that)?

Without more information on the why and how it's kind of hard to say. Just doing some quick searching I found this chrome plugin

Idk if this will work but it has some good reviews and the docs seem ok.  Hopefully that helps.

I found that and soapclient.com , is the idea to parse the wsdl file and then use the syntax of that document to invoke a response from the the server? The WSDL file im using is http://graphical.weather.gov/xml/DWMLgen/wsdl/ndfdXML.wsdl but when I try to do the Latlonzipcode function drop down it kicks back the template again.

Yeah the wsdl file is just how the web service works, the actual calls are from the functions in the wsdl file.  Honestly I don't do much of anything with SOAP, I use web api's and RESTful in applications that I use.  So idk how much help I can be with these, I also like JSON way more than dealing with XML based responses for stuff like this.

I'm assuming you have tried these steps(just making sure)?

Can you get to a point where you do a factory reset?  If so, then do a restore from that point.  If it's not an iOS problem you're mumped, but if you can get back to factory iOS settings you may be able to save yourself a trip.

I research new things all the time.  Outside of blockchain and few others am I as impressed and intrigued as I am with Cosmos DB.  This is the description of the service in Azure, holy mother of god.

Quote
Azure Cosmos DB is a fully managed, globally-distributed, horizontally scalable in storage and throughput, multi-model database service backed up by comprehensive SLAs. Azure Cosmos DB is the next generation of Azure DocumentDB. Cosmos DB was built from the ground up with global distribution and horizontal scale at its core – it offers turn-key global distribution across any number of Azure regions by transparently scaling and replicating your data wherever your users are. You can elastically scale throughput and storage worldwide and pay only for the throughput and storage you need. Cosmos DB guarantees single-digit millisecond latencies at the 99th percentile anywhere in the world, offers multiple well-defined consistency models to fine-tune for performance and guaranteed high availability with multi-homing capabilities – all backed by industry leading service level agreements (SLAs).

Cosmos DB is truly schema-agnostic – it automatically indexes all the data without requiring you to deal with schema and index management. Cosmos DB is multi-model – it natively supports document, key-value, graph and columnar data models. With Cosmos DB, you can access your data using NoSQL APIs of your choice -- DocumentDB SQL (document), MongoDB (document), Azure Table Storage (key-value), and Gremlin (graph), are all natively supported. Cosmos DB is a fully managed, enterprise ready and trustworthy service. All your data is fully and transparently encrypted and secure by default. Cosmos DB is ISO, FedRAMP, EU, HIPAA, and PCI compliant as well.

Israel and the US are the ones who created it, regardless of whether they will every confirm of deny it.  More than likely it was mostly us, but I don't have any direct knowledge of it.

The sophistication of both this and stux are out of this world.  I mean stux having a surveillance control to sent back false data that stuff was running just fine, when in fact it was spinning(literally) out of control is just amazing.  It's almost movie plot level except the false Hollywood hacker portrayal.

Airdrop(non-apple related) is the prevailing theory.  How you can infect a disconnected network is almost too easy, but interesting.

I hope you aren't saying how they got it there was the easy part.  Unless we had legit in-house intel there was no way of knowing it would work unless we knew what they were running.  Stux had EXACT model numbers, and you don't just program that crap overnight.

Cross-post but this might be having an impact on the cryptocurrencies market.  All those people in Ukraine rely on a centralized bank to handle their money.  With the banking systems hit hard people can't access their money.  In a decentralized system like the cryptos if a single point of network(blockchain) failure happens the whole system isn't brought to its knees.

I want to get a new router.  I'm thinking I like what the Synology RT2600ac is all about.  Also, I'm thinking/hoping that when I pull the trigger on a NAS, Synology to Synology will be easier.

I don't know, though.  This decision is harder than I thought it would be because I've wanted the ASUS RT AC88u for a long time.  The 8 LAN ports really intrigue me because I do a lot of wired connections to push my gigabit internet to my devices with as little degradation as possible.

Anyone get either the ASUS or Synology?  They're roughly the same price, give or take twenty bucks.

I don't know much about Synology.  I've always liked ASUS routers mainly because of the 8 ports and port-channel capabilities.  Also the tri band (one 2.4 radio and two 5 ghz radios) intrigues me.

The network guy in me gets torqued when I see the theoretical speeds being touted.  (1900, 2600,3200) They are advertising the theoretical capabilities of each radio and that number is a theoretical aggregate.  I usually tell folks to get a better understanding of their needs and the rf environment before investing in a router.  In my case the tri-band would be nice because I have a family of 7 all streaming something and that extra 5 ghz channel would free up some wireless airtime for the other devices.

Lots of different projects.  In the openness of this blog I won't go into specifics as it relates to work.  I do full stack development tho and am always looking for the next cool thing to do.  Be happy to catch up through PM tho.

So what's the best password manager these days?  I have used one just called passwords for the past ~5 years and it's been great. There was no cloud syncing or anything, just a solid manager. However the developer quit updating it and it's not compatible on iOS11.

I've used LastPass at work before and liked it. Is that the best out there? What do you guys use?

You both implied you don't use password managers. Which I can take as you don't have many passwords for all of your accounts, or they all vary by a small amount. I get one of those and your entire life is gone.

Should probably go in the computer thread because it’s hardware related but it’s being fixed temporarily with a software fix.  Anyway a really interesting article on a new security flaw in Intel chips.  This one excerpt is crazy if you know anything about “the cloud” or virtualization.  :sdeek:

And on multi-user machines, like the servers run by Google Cloud Services or Amazon Web Services, it could even allow hackers to break out of one user's process, and instead snoop on other processes running on the same shared server.

This article makes reference to this post. Could also go in the crypto thread because of the implications that apply to mining. Quantum computing is so fascinating to me and makes hyper-threading look like a kindergartners project. The basic security that we can enjoy on the internet is at risk because of this. Granted delayed mainstream use of it would allow a buffer for when consumers and hackers get their hands on it probably. The cost of cooling into the sub 100 kelvin range almost guarantees that research and large corporations would only be able to apply it for a good amount of time.  :nerd:

Obviously I'm gonna get advice from other sources, but figured I would post here first.

I'm probably gonna go to Def Con this August in Vegas for the first time.  Anyone been?  What was it like?  Tips/Tricks?

Obviously I won't have any SPV wallets on my phone, I'll have a burner phone too.  I've been looking at getting a smaller "travel laptop" outside of my XPS 15, this may be the first great event for it.

Thoughts?

What do you use a burner phone for, Walter White?

Uncovered a potential race condition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_condition) that would have occurred if we would have kept a deployment as is.  First time in a while that I have encountered that at work, so was kind of exciting.

Not nearly as exciting as xlookup but I am basically an expert in Rust and Kubernetes now.

I finally figured out a big data problem I was facing in a side project I've been working on for a few years now.  It solves the scaling problem I had been facing in a very elegant way.  Makes it so I can scale infinitely which was the biggest issue I was facing.  Pretty jacked about it because it could disrupt a specific industry and be a single solution that could help a ton of people.   :excited: :excited: :excited:

I don't know crap about PowerBi.  My company is starting to embrace it as some big thing but we have people who do it like full time.  Not interesting to me.

What do you guys use?
gE computer and cyber security experts, do you recommend a password manager? I’m trying to get mine updated.

I like 1Password but only because my company pays for a premium membership (zero idea what that gets me)

Thanks, I think I will sign up for last pass. I will try to remember my master password and make sure it doesn't get exposed on the dark web
