Title: the fight for (below) .500
Post by: sys on January 11, 2022, 11:05:52 PM
just looked at kstate's record and realized that they're likely to end up pretty close to .500 overall.  so we need a thread to track the effort to get under that mark for a historic third straight year.

i think we've positions ourselves nicely to go 2-7 in the month of January. February (+1 game in March) the schedule makers did not do us any favors...I could see us easily going 4-6, possibly even 5-5 in that 10 game stretch.

Potential Ws that are do not require much wishful thinking:
Old Miss
TCU x2
OSU x2

Ws that require a little wishful thinking but are still very much in the realm of possibility since they are both home games:
WVU
OU

My gut tells me that we will win 5 of those 7 games mentioned above.

big game tonight.  if they could somehow lose this one, it'll set them up very nicely to stay under .500.

classic trap game tomorrow.  it's fine to get all fired up after a big come-from-ahead upset, but records are made when you lose the ones you're supposed to lose.

the schedulemakers did the fans no favors this weekend, and i only managed to watch a few minutes, but it appears our cats were able to overcome a hot day at the nets from pack and secure the loss.

not gonna sugarcoat it though, projections still have the cats easily clearing .500.  we're gonna have to use this loss to get back on the schneid or we risk this thread getting shutdown by mid-february.

magnificent, heroic loss.  no one, not one single person, thought they could pull it off, but they did and it changes the whole season outlook.

i haven't run all the numbers yet, but my guess is the cats are now favored to pull off a sub .500 season.  just incredible.

Depending on how generous osu is feeling…we could be staring down the barrel of an un-feated February. History awaits

being as how we've arrived at the midpoint of the season, a lot of kstate fans have been asking for a summary of how things are looking for the cats chances to stay under .500.  well, here it is:

the cats are mired a game over .500 with 9 regular season conference games to go.  if they finish 3-6 or better, we all but guarantee ourselves a sub .500 finish barring a catastrophe in kansas city.  if we finish 4-5, we'd have to lose the first post-season game to hit our mark.  anything worse than 4-5 and we'll have given ourselves no chance.

"no problem, all we have to do is match our first half of the season performance", you might be thinking.  well think again.  the basketball raters are rating our second half schedule as even tougher than the meat cleaver we ran through in the first nine games, meaning we need to be a little more determined, a little more focused, and it'd be helpful if the ball bounced off the rim a few more times.

so, make no mistake, tonight's game is a big game.  tcu might just be tcu, but it's a road game and we've got to make a habit of losing those.

We have to have faith our bigs will pull through and barring any late game 3 pointer the Catz will prevail.

there's also the threat/opportunity of an as of yet unscheduled game to account for.

There will be no other games. Even if we beat OU and lose to Tech we have to win one in KC just to finish .500, have to win two in the tournament to finish above.

i thought they were searching for another game, is that over?

we're 14-14 now, so they'd have to lose the first game in kc if they finish 1-1 (.500 is not under .500).  assuming no postseason games.

It fell through. If they wanted a game bad enough they could schedule Oklahoma State, they were looking for another game too.

after they started out the second half of the season on the wrong foot, no one, and by that i mean me, thought they could come back and hit their mark.  what a glorious five game streak to close out the season!

of course, there's still work to be done and the schedulemakers are somehow still threatening to do us no favors, but it's appropriate to step back and savor this moment, this achievement.
