I just started listening to podcasts, seems like a great thing to listen to during busy work. What do yall like to listen to and can recommend?
So far I really like Cashing in with TJ Miller. Enjoy TJ's rambling and side tangents. Others I tried are Joe Rogan (probably good, really long/intimidating to get into, can be edgy new agey at times) and Keith and the Girl (hate the accents, seems kind of bitchy). I heard some of another one a while back and I remember it was a lot of bitching, I also read that Marc Maron's is kind of bitchy. Are a lot of them bitchy?
Others I'm gonna check out:
Adam Carolla
Comedy Bang Bang
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History
Bill Burr
-
I think there was another thread that recommended Carolla and Carlin. Carolla is decent. I'm a fan of Carlin's. I also like The Bugle, Stuff You Missed in History Class and This American Life.
-
Radiolab, sporkful

I liked the wrath in Khan series by Dan Carlin.
-
i can't take more than a few minutes of carlin. something about his voice or his attitude.
-
I like Jimmie Pardo, Norm Macdonald, and sometimes Jake Fogelnest, although his show seems to be exclusively for UCB nerds which gets annoying.
-
Jake Fogelnest
he is a DJamer on siriusxmu as well. he is kinda annoying.

yeah, I enjoy him on twitter and I think that's why I listened. I'm also picky about audio quality (listen in headphones) and his is not completely shitty like a lot of them.

man that stuff you should know comment i made. really?
i listen to that one the most now.
downcast is a great ios app to manage your podcasts
-
Bugle is good - John Oliver hosts and when I listened, I started to realize that he is better than your average Daily show correspondent
I've been getting into the Nerdist podcast. I'm not a big enough fan to listen to random people on them, but if they have someone that I'm interested in then they can be really good. Hardwick is generally great, but he is one of those guys that every story relates to his life/show which gets annoying if there is too big of a stretch. The Will Arnett and Nick Offerman episodes might be my two faves so far

that looks awful. Mainly because I hate Paul F. Tompkins doing characters.

So far only been listening to TJ Miller/Cash Levy's and The Champs with Neal Brennan and Moshe Kasher. Podcasts seem hard to get into when each one has 100+ hour long shows.
Interestingly, I'm becoming a way better talker ever since I stopped listening to music and only podcasts. I feel noticeably wittier, quicker, and a better listener (instead of waiting for my turn to speak).
-
It's pretty nerdy but I like On The Media on WNYC.
TED Radio Hour is pretty good too
-
Serial and Sword & Scale have me by the balls

:runaway: Serial :runaway:
Has to be Jay, right?

i flip flop about every five minutes... no strong convictions yet

last thursday's? epi 4?

Sorry, I listened today to epi 4, the latest one. Isn't a monday release date?

every thursday morning
-
would be pretty lol if at the end of the story they're just like "yeah, adnan did do it"
-
I wish they just dropped all of them at once, Netflix style. This weekly bullshit is very 1990's' ey.
-
:runaway:
-
What is this show like? And why not just wait until they're all out?
-
today's the fifth episode - so far she's been pretty much covering the girl's murder like a less clinical, more personal "Dateline" mystery and focusing on different people each week.
yeah, in hindsight should probably just do it like 90% of tv shows i've ever watched
-
Tune In Radio still acts like epi 4 is the latest. :shakesfist:
-
today's serial...

i like this podcast so much that i "save" them for a while before listening. i know, it makes no sense.
but it was great for a recent 3 hr flight to lax to burn through 4 epis of serial.
2 things-
-i don't know who did it, and the producers don't have a set number of episodes they plan on doing, it's just going to keep going as long as they need to
-i wonder what season 2 will be about. another murder mystery? prob not. but then what? only time will tell. it's so great, really wishing i had invested in gimlet media (not kidding).
-
I'm 100% positive that jay or adnan killed her and I hate the guilty one so much for lying that I can't enjoy the show. Doesn't keep me from listening though.
-
of the things to hate a murderer for, lying about the crime seems to say something about you, bubbles4ksu
-
I thought they originally said 10epis?
-
Serial is a series of podcasts exploring a suspenseful story over multiple episodes, as long as it takes to tell the story.
maybe this season is 10? i may have misunderstood that sentence
-
Maybe.
I want to note again how rough ridin' fantastic Radio Lab is. They are the absolute best.
-
Who listens to podcasts? What a joke. :flush:
-
radiolab is pretty hit or miss, i prefer 1AL
-
dunno if there's anything definitive
The first season will be 12 episodes long — they think.
“For us, that it’s a podcast is so liberating,” says Koenig. “We can tell it as long as we need to tell it, and we don’t have to worry about it.”
-
Who listens to podcasts? What a joke. :flush:
i would listen to your podcast
-
I wish the gE podcast would come back.
-
I'm very into some of the SModcast stuff. I listen to SModcast and Hollywood Babble-on every week. But, I'm a big Kevin Smith fan, so there you go.
This week's podcast with Smith and Joe Rogan was amazing, though. Two hours long, but it just zipped by.
Topics were (in no particular order):
Early Christianity was possibly a mushroom eating fertility cult
Moses was high, which is why the burning bush was telling him stuff
Joe Rogan bow hunts bears
What it's like to trip on DMT
Joe Rogan has free range chickens at his house
-
i used to try to follow the smodcast stuff but I just can't keep up with kevin smith. i had to unfollow him on twitter a couple of years ago to give the other thousands of people I follow a chance to be heard
-
I wish the gE podcast would come back.
Me too. I've tried, but I need KK or _FAN to lend it credibility.
-
just got started on today's... Jay episode! :D
-
just got started on today's... Jay episode! :D
I made great time on my commute today so I still have some to listen to over my lunch hour.
-
I've gotten a lot of great new ideas from this thread, so thank you guys for starting this.
New ones that I've added and really enjoy:
Radiolab (Awesome)
Bugle (Hilarious)
TJ Miller
Subscribed and will play soon:
Serial
Joe Rogan Experience
-
start up is good too
-
Holy crap...Serial.
 :Woohoo: :Woot:
-
Serial is really good so far.
-
I fell like serial is either going to get super crazy or fall off the boring cliff soon.
-
i felt that way after last week's episode, but my balls are gripped again
-
I just started Star Talk with Neil Degrass Tyson and really like it.
Also, TED Radio Hour is pretty interesting after a couple epis.
also a fan of Stuff you should Know.
-
sysk is a great go-to on long drives
-
I just don't know how serial can give a satisfying ending, unless she solves it. I keep thinking to myself "I wonder who did it" and then realizing that I will probably never know
-
adnan is guilty imo
-
adnan is guilty imo
There is always a piece of evidence to contradict whatever could've happened. Adnan probably did it but it didn't go down like Jay said.
-
I think adnan is guilty and that jay did a lot more than he admitted. Like go-to-jail level of helping out.
-
agree with everyone here
-
Podcasts I Love:
Lexicon Valley (Language and Culture)
Smart People Podcast (Educational)
Fantasy Focus (Fantasy Football)
Snap Judgement (Story Telling)
All Songs Considered (Music Discovery)
Bugle (Political Humor)
Other ones I listen to:
Men in Blazers (Soccer)
Comedy Bang Bang (Comedy)
Song Exploder (Music Theory?)
99 Percent Invisible (Design/Architecture)
Iterate (Mobile Phone App Design)
I'm always looking for new ones, and as you can tell I have a pretty big range. I'll have to give Serial a try since you guys are raving about it.
-
Freakonomics podcasts are pretty good if you're into that sort of thing
-
I loved the book. Have only listened to two podcasts so far and am not impressed with them. One was vampires and the economy, though.
-
I'm in the middle of the 7th episode, and they're talking to the Innocence Project people.
I don't think Adnan did it. I think he makes sense out of process of elimination, but...unless something major shifts, I don't feel like there's enough there to say he was guilty.
Now, I'm interested to hear episode 8 because Jay...there's something up with that guy.
-
I don't think there was enough to convict Adnan but I think he probably did it.
-

Yeah, that one was kind of a "duh" moment. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know from it. Enjoyed the US & Mexico "Merger" episode.
-
That was the other of the two I listened to. It didn't do anything for me.
-
I love the Bugle, but damn, when Andy is bad, it's fast forward bad. Anyone else feel that way?
John Oliver is consistently hilarious, though.
-
Andy is mostly tolerable, occasionally bad, and never good, imo
-
I just found Alton Browncast today. Really liked the first one. Looking forward to nerding out on this one heavily
-
he bugs me
-
Alton or andy?
-
Alton brown, the way he talks
-
Alton brown, they way he talks
You can kindly F off right now.
-
I've been enjoying the Todd Barry podcast lately.
-
Alton brown, the way he talks
i listened to the jonathan sawyer epi. it was very interesting listening to the portion when they were discussing making vinegar
-
That's the one I listened to too. Going to binge these when I get the chance. I wish I cooked with more vinegar, so I could try that.
-
he did talk over his guest way too much but
-
I bet he has to. Especially w guys like that Sawyer guy. I bet he would just keep going deep on vinegar and turn that 'cast into a three part series on beer mothers if not controlled and brought back in.
-
bugs me. I am there for the guests. like petro over gottleib
-
Started Hardcore History yesterday. Started with the Blue Print to Armageddon four part series. Really good. I am four hours into it in two days.
He does a good job of conveying a crap load of historical info in a very interesting manner.
Makes me wish I paid a bunch more attention to HS history class.
-

It's the best. And I graduated with a degree in history from Kansas State (phi beta kappa) so I can be considered quite an authority on history podcasts. Dan is the greatest. Because they're so long (the latest Countdown to Argmageddon is 4.5 hours :surprised:) it can be a lot to digest at once. I try to save them for my trips to and from KC/Champaign.
He also has something of a current events podcasts that usually get released once every 2-3 weeks which are also very good. It's more of a commentary from him, but they're great if you want some more Dan Carlin in between the HH shows.
-
I started Countdown to Armageddon yesterday. Made the two hour run fly. Looking forward to my drive to Cleveland today.

just finished the complete The Intercept interview with Jay, pretty interesting stuff

All my hipster friends are in love with Tom Scharpling and The Best Show, but I don't quite get it.

All my hipster friends are in love with Tom Scharpling and The Best Show, but I don't quite get it.
did a little research, here's what turned up-
Three hours of Mirth, Music and Mayhem hosted by Tom Scharpling. The home of Scharpling & Wurster. The former Best Show On WFMU is now The Best Show!
never heard of mirth, so whatever on that. music? spotify. mayhem? sounds like WWF with some Tom guy. /pass

Radiolab (Awesome)
Serial
Its this guys.

The first couple episodes of Invisibilia (the one on Radiolab and the actual first episode you can download) were really good. I'm going to keep this on my list.

I was kinda bored by them. I am going to give them a shot still, though.
Have just found This.....Is Interesting. Have only listened to three of them, but really like it so far.

i need my podcasts to be a minimum of 29 minutes long, no less. planet money is good for a drive into work and crap but come the eff on you jackasses give me some more minutes or shut your pie holes

Bored? The guy who was a living vegetable stuck watching Barney cartoons on loop over and over again wasn't interesting?
Hell, I practically forgot that I was driving this morning.

Tim Ferriss puts out 70+ minute podcasts once a week that IMO are fantastic content

the latest Common Sense and Waking Up podcasts are a discussion between sam harris and dan carlin. it's the best stuff i've heard on islam and the middle east and foreign policy, these guys are incredible, like, i'm positive that they're more talented than the people actually making decisions.
-
Podcast history of the world has great ancient history stuff. The guy is a dork though
-
Common sense is fantastic.

Listened to a few episodes of the race wars podcast today and enjoyed it immensely. It's Kurt Metzger and Sherrod small (chris rock's cousin) doing comedic commentary on contemporary race issues. The Jul 30th episode had me in tears at work when talking about bill Cosby.
(caution: don't listen if you are easily offended)
-
I enjoy Pete Holmes' You Made it Weird. He talks with mostly comedians and spends part of every show talking about spirituality and philosophy and religion. I don't even care much about those topics but I enjoy his conversations and his laugh.

Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" series on the Mongols has been fantastic. Just amazing.

Yeah, I haven't listened to all of them, but this is my fav of his so far.

For the single lads out there, simple pickup (from youtube) has a podcast, and it's wonderful. Raw and hilarious.
-
Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" series on the Mongols has been fantastic. Just amazing.
Driving home from the Boundary Waters in Minnesota I listened to nearly the whole thing. Very good.
-
Just recently came across a podcast by Jocko Wilink. He is a pretty unique guy. A little over the top and it has taken him a few episodes to find his voice and flow, but I really enjoy it.
He is a 20 yr vet of the Seals and currently a leadership consultant. Very interesting guy. He is super into working out and other self discipline type things.
His stuff is a combo of war stuff that he derives leadership and or discipline stuff from, as well as discussions about workouts, diet, jujitsu, etc. He even has one about Henry Rollins Band.
I recommend it.
-
CNS do you listen to the Meateater?
Also did you derive anything useful from that one I posted on grass fed beef steak?
-

I haven't. I like to fish more to get the kids out and enjoy the peace and quiet you can only find at a lake or ocean, more than actually getting into the weeds about equipment and success rates. As for hunting, I don't go much anymore. Used to all the time as a kid and through college. Fell off when I had kids due to time and prioritization of other things. After which, I found I don't really miss it that much.
I do intend to go listen to the one you posted about the steak. I plan to. Cooking is probably my fav hobby these days and I try to listen to all the worthwhile podcasts I can on food, supply, cooking, etc. Really interested in it all. I will dig it out and give it a go.
-
Pardon my take. Thank me later
-
What about Joe Rogan? Anyone listen to that one?
-
Some. That is how I got turned on to Jocko Wilink. He was on last Dec.
So much of Rogan is stuff that is outside my sphere and I have a hard time caring about.
-
I enjoy Rogan
-
When his guest/topic is something I care about, he is fantastic.
-

Well yeah.

Martyrmade is a wonderfully informative podcast on the Palestine/Israel sitch. I think anyone who listens to it is authorized to have an opinion on the subject, and anyone who hasn't listened or studied the region at the graduate level should not be taken seriously. That's a bold statement to make about a 20-hour long podcast but it is that good.
-
Seconded. I started it last week after hearing about it on the Jocko Podcast. It is pretty great if you like Dan Carlin'esque detail on that area. I am 3 epi's in and really enjoying it.
I honestly had no idea how recent the situation was started. I thought it was a very old conflict. Crazy how politically deceitful Brits and Zionists were. You could definitely say that Brittan is quasi responsible for the unsettled middle east, when it comes to Israel.
-
thanks for the tip. i'll check it out. i went to Israel in 2011, but much of what I focused on there were things that happened in biblical times. I have a base level of understanding of the current conflicts, but it is very incomplete. One of the most surreal points of our trip was when we visited Jericho, which is a Palestinean town. We had to get a permit to visit, based on a guy knowing a resident in town. When we got there, our tour guide who had been leading groups in the area for 25 years said he had never been to Jericho. "Jews don't travel here. It could be dangerous"

cried while laughing to today's comedy bang bang. neil campbell is the GOAT. sorry, Paul F.
-
i'll have to check that one out, i've heard about it but i feel like it will keep me awake
the new podcast from Variety is ok, it's entitled, "playback with kris tapley"
-
CBB is kind of hit or miss and getting into it is sort of an undertaking. They make quite a few in-jokes and there's over 400 episodes. That said, I'm very, very glad I got into it. There are a few recurring guests that never fail to make me laugh hysterically.
The last 20 minutes of today's show is maybe my favorite.
-
I've enjoyed parts of both More Perfect and Revisionist History. Also, Radiolab was good today for the first time in a while
-
is anyone else listening to beautiful stories from anonymous people? i like it like greg likes heroin.

Esp as those longer epis drag on he stops even saying quote and just makes weird gurgling noises

Every time Dan says the word "indeed" is like finger nails on a chalkboard to me. Like, "then that would make a very powerful weapon indeed." You don't need the "indeed" part, Dan. It's a waste of breath that just sounds like you're trying to be fancy for no reason.
Really enjoy the podcasts otherwise.
-
Two of my favs (may have been mentioned):
How to do Everything (some interesting trivia type stuff but mostly just funny). You will know after one episode whether or not it is for you.
Science Vs (entertaining but very informative and practical knowledge that you can share with your friends). I'm pretty sure you will either love or hate the host(ess).
-
forgot to follow up. i did the first 2 martyr made but took a break. i'll do the rest later. each ep is so long, but really good and loaded with info. Although I am bothered that the guy calls the book of Exodus "Iron Age Mythology" but it shouldn't really surprise me. Thanks so much for the recommendation bubs

he has some writing on marytrmade.com (http://martyrmade.com) where he indicates that he's a person of faith. i think he's just trying to be as detached and scholarly as possible.
-
hmm interesting. there's so much in there that just makes me go "What? Really? Damn no way" like every 2 minutes
-
I initially was going to skip the Shop Talk epi but decided to go ahead and listed. Glad I did. Would recommend.
-

yep. every 15 minutes you change your opinion about who the most guilty party is/was.

-
I tried listening to Comedy Bang Bang once and couldn't stand it. But I really like it when Scott Aukerman is on Jimmy Pardo! So weird!

I popped it on after your reccomendo - listened to some more comedy bang bang after and enjoyed quite a bit. Auckerman is pretty meh for me so the quality of the guest makes it good or bad.
-
i liked it, dlew. it made me laugh. i did get distracted from the bit because i have some questions for you about CBB.
-
I agree that CBB is hit or miss and the episodes's quality really depends on the characters.
@bubbles. i'll call you shortly and answer any questions you have.

I stopped listening 3 or 4 months ago,I think he is writing another book and is mailing in the podcast.

I think Joe Rogan has been mentioned in this thread. Does anyone actually like him? Like, I had always thought he was an bad person/prick from his standup, like just a very snarky snide stupid act. But apparently he has quite the podcast following, and has recently gotten into bowhunting and is now friends with a lot of legitimate people in the sport. People that I respect are often on his show and go hunting with him and such, and I have to wonder if it's just because of the size of his audience and the potential for him to grow the sport, of if they genuinely like him. He seems like a hard person to genuinely like. And honestly, I'm not sure if I like him being some sort of de facto spokesperson for the sport to the mainstream masses.
-
I recently started listening to Rogan. Similar to ferris in that about 50%-60% is something I dig. The good thing about Rogan is he spits out 2-3 a week and all are around 3 hrs, so if you don't like two of them, you still have 3 hours of something decent.
Also, he has a crazy large backlog that is completely free. He has some really interesting stuff in there.
Maybe he is an acquired taste. I didn't dig it the first two or three times I tried listening to him. :dunno:
Other casts I have started are We The People Live and Here We Are. The latter has shitty sound from time to time, but he gets interesting topics and guests if you like psychology and stuff.
-
I think your "hard person to like" thing is way off base. He's a very interesting and thoughtful dude imo.
He's also way into the whole "primal man" (for lack of a better term) type stuff that you seem to be interested in too, I would give it a try.
-
1) He curses too much. It's not funny.
2) In the one podcast I listened to recently, he said multiple things that were not true as if he were an expert. I didn't like that.
Did you guys listen to the one with Adam Greentree?
ETA: Anyway, I realize 1 & 2 aren't really relevant to my original point. I am just kinda like ehhhhh about him. And, because of that I'm surprised he has such a big following. I must be in the minority for not liking him.
-
Honestly, the hunting ones are ones I don't listen to.
I can understand what your saying, though. He covers a broad range of topics, and if the other topics don't interest you, I can certainly understand you not digging it.
-
Yeah, I only do the ones with comics or an interesting science guy. The hunting and mma I can't listen to for more than a minute

Guys, I am really worried about what America's Test Kitchen is going to turn into now that Christopher Kimball is no longer there. He is BITB in cooking media. Now that he is gone, I just don't know. If I am stuck with Sporkfull and Splendid Table as my only cooking podcasts, I may end it all.
-
I have only listened to two maybe, and those were with guests I liked or was interested in. Both hunting related. I like the guests, just not him.
It kinda makes me feel better that folks like you guys aren't listening to the hunting ones, because he's still a novice hunter and says some stupid/not true things.
Oh the MMA, ya so like Rogan and Cam Hanes and John Dudley (last two are hunting dudes) are also into MMA and this leading bow manufacturer (Hoyt) is now sponsoring a couple MMA dudes and I don't like where that's going. I don't need to be sharing the woods with a bunch of people who just left Buffalo Wild Wings. Just seems like the wrong kind of people to try to attract.
-
I don't listen to the MMA ones either, but often his guests are into that and the conversation touches on it. 9/10, it is a much less meathead tapout convo that you would expect.
He is actually much more a hippy than a meathead, imo.
-
8man's list is pretty solid. I prefer Rusillo and Kanell to Jacoby or Simmons for my sports though.
I was not into S2 of Undisclosed. Listened to 4 episodes and it just seemed like dissecting a lot of high school drama that is tangentially related to the case at best. I get that he was convicted on a lot of that nonsense, but spending 45 minutes talking about it doesn't make it any more ridiculous.
-

Cooking Issues!
Sporkful hasn't been good for about 2 years it seems like. Will have to try Splendid Table
-
Splendid Table is kinda annoying. I don't like her approach and her sunshiny attitude can gtfo. Thing is, she is pretty good a flavor stuff. I hardly ever listen to her and usually ff through her stories.
Agreed on sporkful. Its much more entertainment with food as a base part of the discussion than it is education about stuff. That's why ATK really needs to not F up the Kimball transition. Either that, or Kimball needs to start a podcast with Milk Street Kitchen(which he won't do because he is still an owner of ATK and no doubt won't want to compete with his biz/brand).
-
Another Rogan question: do you think they take breaks or eat/drink much on the show? Like it seems pretty fluid but they go for like 3+ hours.
-
Nope. There are plenty casts out there where he fills air while the guest pees.
-
Wow that's amazing.

I like biggerpockets podcasts. Admittedly, it's for a relatively small section of the public because it's about real estate investing. But if you're interested into that sort of thing, I highly recommend it.

I want you guys to go back to trying to figure out the enigma that is the Joe Rogan experience.
-
my podcast list is pretty much full.
-
You guys! Good News on the Christopher Kimball front. Milk Street started a podcast and it is pretty much exactly what ATK used to be. :excited:
So much so that ATK is suing Kimball. I would be fine with Milk Street just rolling on as a copy of what ATK used to be.
Pretty great stuff. I am worried a little bit, though. He hasn't put out a new cast in like 9 days, where he was doing one a week. Hoping there isn't a legal reason...
-
This American Life is still on my list of 38 feeds but it's boring and vastly overrated.

The data I have on this Rogan character is inconclusive. Is he a redneck? Is he a hippie? I don't know. Maybe I should start a podcast where I interview people about Joe Rogan to try and get to the bottom of this.
-
Joe Rogan (rightfully so) loves the crap out of ayahuasca.
-
Judging by the response to your last 4 posts, you might have a subscriber problem to such a podcast?
Who knows. That's the wonderful thing about podcasts, you can record one on your phone while hanging out on your couch. I mean, it's so easy, it doesn't matter that no one is paying attention to your chosen topic.

Slogged through the first episode on this. Man, this guy is dull. Took 6:40 into the episode to even begin talking about something other than their social media accounts and other BS. It's like 2 guys sitting in their basement talking about watching 48hrs. No production value, no pacing, meh.

I've posted some in this thread already.
Basically, the dude is all of a sudden into archery hunting. A good bit of the hunting community loves him because he's giving hunting some positive exposure, and also because he likes MMA stuff, which I guess some hunting dudes like too. But I'm not so sure "we" ought to embrace the guy just because he has a huge following. Ya, he's not nearly the bad person I previously thought he was, so that's good. But, dude dropped a bucket of cash to go shoot some private land giant elk on some super exclusive California ranch. That's super lame, IMO.
There's some other stuff too I can't readily recall, but he's like a 4/7 for me. I can't imagine myself listening to him much since I can't keep up with the ones I actually like.
-
sounds like he needs to #sacrifice more?

Ya, dude's not tough. He's a cupcake.

4/7 is pretty fair. I'd probably give him a 5/7 but I've never watched fear factor or seen him do standup
-
emo, would your podcast be about hunting?
I think you do a very good job blogging about that here.
Ya. There is a very underserved part of the market right now. Like there are a dozen western big game specific podcasts, and maaaaybe one that covers this subject, and I think the pool of potential listeners is substantial.
-
you should do it
-
I have some strong feelings re: Joe Rogan.
I felt a disturbance in the force.

I'm going to a podcast launch party next week and I'm going to ask a lot of questions. Is there a way to see how many subscribers certain podcasts have? I need some analytics man. Then I need to see what kind of subscribership would bear sponsors that pay money (not just gear). I have some in's and could probably pick up some sponsors but they're not going to give me money just because we're friends--would have to make business sense.
Also I had this idea of producing a video wherein a group of dudes (gals welcome) hunt/fish from Alaska in summer all the way down through the lower 48 ending in Arizona, all public land DIY stuff. The time/cash/equipment investment would be a lot more obviously, profitability less likely, longer wait, etc. But a guy can dream.

i just started listening to dan carlin and i recommend everything so far
Prophets of Doom is about an uprising between catholics, lutherans, and some wild anabaptists in germany in the 1500s right after martin luther did his thing.
American Peril is about the spanish-american war, and america's very quick dabble into full-on colonialism, which i knew practically nothing about before. very fascinating.
just started the 6-part behemoth on WWI, just absolutely bonkers so far.
-
ok so I've never done a Dan Carlin before
RICK DARIS!
-
yeah American peril is really good, as is the Blueprint for Armageddon (WWI) series.
my favorite is the Ghosts of the Ostfront series, which deals with the eastern front of WWII. I believe that is behind a paywall now, but it's worth it.

The Common Sense episodes are sometimes hit or miss, but he is an interesting thinker on current events. I remember Episode 303 - "The Way You Play the Game Redux" as an interesting one. The original "The Way You Play the Game" is great too, but behind a paywall...

I was disappointed compared to Up and Vanished, beyond the obvious resolution there. AM just seems scattershot and unfinished.
Dirty John was decent. Really needing something new. I've tried a few and been underwhelmed (Thinking Sideways, My Favorite murder, Black hands)

They are for sure. I just tend to skip those. I appreciate alternative perspectives but I don’t like feeling like I’m listening to a rumor. Probably the only opinion show I listen to (if you could call it that) is NPR Politics.
I really like Science VS because regardless of the topic it is presented in a way that gives me confidence they’re presenting objective facts for the most part.
Other ones I like along those lines are Hardcore History (obvs and discussed already ITT plenty) and In Our Time (BBC show typically with Oxford and Cambridge profs summarizing different topics—which are mostly super boring but it’s great when you find a good one).

All my hipster friends are in love with Tom Scharpling and The Best Show, but I don't quite get it.
I get it now! I got over the hump and realized it was just him talking to callers. It's brilliant.
He also has a show with Julie Klausner and a fake Friends recap show that are both also great.
-
Yeah I liked his friends podcast, it's a fun slow burn.

Dan Carlin (Hardcore History, Common Sense [now defunct]) is good. Can be difficult to slog through 5 straight hours of his intensity, though.
Used to listen to Sam Harris (Waking Up, but now I think it has a different name).
Intelligence^2. Debates on topical topics taped in London, usually featuring a globally diverse panel of experts.
Radiolab (and sundry affiliated programs).
Our Fake History.
A few constitutional law podcasts.
.
Some other random ones that have already been listed.
-
Dang Kat kid that's a shitload of podcasts.
I usually like to listen to Desus and Mero if I can listen to it within a week

I literally have 93 podcasts on my feed, I usually download 8-10 hours of podcasts each week day. Listening on 1.3 speed is a godsend. Because of this mass, I haven't been listening to the bodega boys as much. Since last fall their podcasts have gotten crazy long, sometimes 2 hours. I won't listen to anything beyond 90 minutes.
The newest podcast I have subscribed to is old but amazing. It's called "A Very Fatal Murder." It's a serial parody from the onion. The episodes are only about 10 minutes each.

The dude who does the midday show on 810, I don't know the name of the show because the logo is only the crackers face.
I also have a lot of podcasts that only ran for one season, mostly from Wondery. These feeds are how I find out about new podcasts, they put the trailers in these feeds.

Dying For Sex

It's incredibly interesting, not smutty at all. Essentially it's a woman dying of cancer telling the story about her escapades. It's actually very funny.

It's my quickest turn off if I try any new podcast, if it sounds like I'm listening in on a convo at a restaurant I just shut it off (lazlo aside, but I mostly hit stuff I want to hear). To me a podcast has to have some purpose and some movement and direction.
-
I like light restaurant conversation so when I zone out it doesn't matter
-
How does everyone feel about Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast? I liked the series about WWI and "Ghosts of the OstFront" but the current one about WW2 in the Pacific seems even more rambling and unfocused with him just saying "I'm fascinated by the extremes of the human experience" over and over again.
-
Same. I grew bored with WW2. Loved the series on Genghis Khan and WW1.

Do podcasters have a script that they work off of? Just notes that they ad lib from? The Mike Duncan Revolutions podcast seems like he is following a script pretty closely but with HH, I have this idea that he is at his desk just randomly picking up books and reading passages out of them and then riffing his thought on it.

Mike absolutely has a script. If you want another great podcast, by him and what broke him onto the scene, it's his The History of Rome podcast (I actually relistened again for like the 10th time over December.) In that podcast, specifically his 100th episode question blowout, he kinda goes through his process, but to make it short, yes, he writes everything down and follows it. I have heard him even flip pages sometimes in some of those THOR episodes.
If you do get into that podcast, which is really, really great, and really another big thing for him the decline and fall of the republic, (he has a book out on it), just know that like, the first 10-ish episodes are very short (like 12 minutes) and very rough, he even kinda talks about it in the podcast, but he just kinda started doing it, didn't think it was going to ever get as popular as it did, so he had to update his server/hosting site, audio, etc. I think he even admits in an episode "I was literally learning what to do as I went along"
I will admit compared to other podcasts I've heard, I really, really like that most Mike's episodes are in the 20-35 minute range. Dan Carlin's stuff is so long it's almost daunting to see how long they are. Having the breaks make it more like a compact story and lecture instead of a long drawn out talk.
-
Oh, and if you listen long enough, he was a really funny dry humor that strings throughout many of his episodes, and I think even some of his rome jokes make it into revolutions (his kinda go to villian if someone dies mysteriously is Augustus' wife Livia, had them killed for example)

Agree about shorter being better for most podcasts. I only have about 2 - 3 hr in the car each week when I can really listen.

ya a little pakd when i wrote that, there's plenty of good pods out there, light convos included, but sometimes people just love to hear themselves talk too much or they try to sound too much like experts. actually that tweet mostly reminds me of this spiritual "life coach" that i met - droning on endlessly about nothing. he's also trying to manipulate/con my friend but that's for another thread.

lol that's fine. While I can't remember the name of the podcast the very specific example I have in my mind was a podcast my old roommate years ago when I first moved to KC listened to when it was his turn to drive to work. It drove me bananas. It probably took the two hosts the entire drive to work just to get going on whatever topic they wanted to discuss, it was like they had nowhere to go and just shot the breeze for 10-15 minutes and then "oh hey, let's talk about x". Like, start the podcast there, no one needs to know the every little ends of out of the few days you all spent away doing whatever. Drove me mad
-
idk what you guys use to listen to podcasts but mine has a +15 seconds button that you can just hammer away at until you hear the person's tone change to something that sounds like a real subject is being discussed
-

If I'm working, driving, or whatever, the last thing I should have to do is hammer away on a button cause the host wants to talk for 15 minutes about their weekend, if your podcast is supposed to be about a subject, jump in. Best podcasts are the ones you don't need to do anything to

the newsie one is one of my faves and has been mentioned. the egg war is maybe the hardest I've laughed at any at parts. The dolphin is an early classic.
I haven't listened but I am hoping the abbie hoffman ones are good, because there is a ton of material there.
I liked the John Delorean one. Any of the rich family ones or company ones are good.

30 - 45 minutes is about the right length for a podcast episode.
Interesting discussion about the implications of the Allies demands for "unconditional surrender" at the start of this episode. This demand ensured that the Axis would fight on to the bitter end - but on the other hand the Allies didn't feel that they could let the Axis end the war on their own terms. He keeps talking about "human lawn mower"... I'm gonna finish it but like I've said before I think the WW1 series and Ghosts of the Ostfront were both better.

Agreed
Not as good as the other two.

I listened to the Khan series last week on a long drive, and enjoyed it. I then listened to the first two episodes of the WW2 "Ghosts of the Ostfront" and it was great...the Eastern front war between Germany and Russia. Holy crap I knew that it was a brutal deal, but the size, callus disregard for life, and outright evil of the thing was amazing.

Tough to find more brutal human conflicts than the eastern front. Horrible conditions esp for civilians who were unlucky enough to be caught in the battlescape.
I'm about halfway thru this last episode of Supernova in the East and I'm liking it more than the earlier episodes. Talking about Iwo Jima, currently.

Finished Supernova in the East while I was mowing the yard yest.
At the end of the 'cast, Dan mentioned that he has been involved with creating the immersive WW1 experience at the National WW1 Museum / Liberty Memorial in Kansas City. Has anybody gone through this since they installed this? Dan says there are massive speakers that make it feel like you are living thru an artillery barrage on the Western Front. It has been about 10 years or so since I went thru the museum. Sounds like I may need to go back.

If you like health science stuff, Peter Attia is a great show.
I started reading his work back in 2010 or so. Was really glad he started a podcast. Thoroughly enjoyed his latest episode with Gary Taubes.

This one can be a lot of fun depending on the album. The 50 Cent one was really great.

i have enjoyed a few episodes of Bandsplain. it's a fun deep dive of music artists, usually with a guest music critic from rolling stone or whatever. a few full length songs are sprinkled in. i listened to cocteau twins, ween, blink 182, and metallica. the host is extremely genX (nearly constant stream of "totally" and "babe") but is pretty good!

Few more inspiring tales than Touissant and the Haitian jacobins.
Few more sad stories than how Haiti was treated by major powers thereafter.

I've only been listening to episodes of the Dollop where the subject intrigues me lately and the most recent one is the front half of a Steven Seagal two-parter. I highly recommend.

I just discovered The Dollop and it is my current favorite. I laugh myself silly I tells ya. Anyone else listen to it?
Yup - I pick the episodes that interest me but I enjoy it too. Gareth has pretty decent stand up too.
Best ones I've heard:
Rube Waddell
David Hahn
Mince Pie
Ten Cent Beer Night
Gregor McGregor
John Brown two-parter should be required for any Kansan
steven segall is incredible
I really did learn a lot about John Brown from those episodes!

I listened to that John Brown two-parter while driving up to Kansas last Thanksgiving. Good stuff. I think the Dollop also did an episode about The Egg Wars? If so, that one is a must-listen, too.

Enjoyed the episode of The Remnant were Jonah talks with Avi Loeb about objects in space that may or may not have been created by technology in other regions of the universe:
The truth is out there, and Jonah may uncover it on today’s Remnant. To boldly go where no pundit has gone before, he’s joined by Avi Loeb—Harvard astrophysicist and author of the recent book, Interstellar: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Our Future in the Stars—to discuss UFOs and our place in the universe. Together, they endeavor to answer all of the most pressing questions about alien life: How should we approach the study of interstellar objects? What role does the government play in scientific inquiry? And most importantly, when can we expect the sweet meteor of death to strike?

My co-worker recommended "The Rest is History" podcast and it has been great so far. Went back and listened to a four-part series about the Falklands war as well as recent eps about life in East Germany and famous dogs. Looks like they are going to cover the Fall of Saigon next. Would recommend.

Currently listening to season one of the Bema podcast, which walks the listener through Torah from a Hebrew/Eastern perspective. It’s an eye-opening and thought provoking experience, especially for a westerner.
As westerners, biblical text, especially the Old Testament can be uncomfortable, maddening, boring, etc. that’s because our western worldview and perspective handicaps our ability to digest the poetic and deeper meanings of the text.
These stories are Hebrew/Eastern stories written by Hebrew authors, for an ancient Hebrew audience. The first two episodes kind of lay the ground work, and the walk thru Torah starts w/ Genesis 1:1 in episode three.
It’s an enjoyable, and lighthearted show. Not preachy and quite different from any biblical interpretation most of us have probably experienced. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I am (listened thru episode 11 so far, halfway thru the story of Jacob).

This is the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. It’s not close. Season 1 and season 3 are absolute fireballs. Season 2 (non-Torah OT) is a slog, but worth it.
I’ve listened to 100 episodes so far. Episode 100 begins w/ an 11 minute recap of the previous 99 episodes.
Season 1 - Torah
Season 2 - Rest of OT
Season 3 - NT

I might give it a shot but it sounds like it might require too much focus to listen to while I work.
I need some new podcasts. How did this get made, the dollop, and comedy bang bang only get me through so much of my work week. I usually fill some gaps with sports podcasts but I can only stomach so many "Top 10 QB debate" pod episodes in the offseason.

If you like that Scott Aukerman orbit of podcasts (based on CBB/HWTGM), talk to Stevesie. He's been trying to get me to listen to Hollywood Handbook for like 8 years, but my podcast schedule is pretty full.

I've already tried a time or two with ChiCat as well.
-
I'm really liking The Rest is History. Just listened to an engrossing ep about the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79.
-
Dear ChiCat (or anyone looking for a new podcast),
Hollywood Handbook - if you want a sample episode, they interviewed Ben Stiller a couple weeks back who is absolutely the biggest guest they've landed by a lot. And the whole time they just kept asking him if he would help them get Adam Scott get on the show since they work on Severance together. Very Norm MacDonald-esque humor.
Blocks with Neal Brennan - he was the cowriter of Chapelle Show, and has been very open with his struggles with mental health. So he interviews other comedians and really gets into mental health and tendencies. As someone with a psych degree and a love for stand up, this has jumped to the top of my list.
Bad Friends with Andrew Santino and Bobby Lee - just plain fun
Two Bears One Cave with Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura - I think Bert Kreischer is such a spectacle I could just listen to him talk to anyone
Macrodosing - PFT from Pardon My Take and Arian Foster take on subjects from conspiracy theories to The Revolutionary War to cryptids to The Ocean. It's all awesome. The first hour is usually the crew catching up which isn't fun if you don't know the personalities, but it is a really great group of personalities for such a wide array of subjects
Nateland - Nate Bargatze's podcast
Confused Breakfast/The Rewatchables - fun info about movies we've all seen a bunch. Confused Breakfast is three guys mid-late thirties that mostly review movies from their (our) childhood. Then Rewatchables is hosted by Bill Simmons, so even if they were to do the same movie it's a wildly different perspective.
You Made It Weird - Pete Holmes interview show. He can definitely be overwhelming at times, and has a tendency to interrupt his guests when he gets excited. It can be offputting, but his positive attitude/outlook on life is worth the listen.

Hadn't listened to TAL for many years. Ira's conversation with David Sedaris (from 2000) encapsulates all of my anxieties about traveling to France next year:

Also includes a fascinating conversation with now-deceased Janet McDonald about living in Paris as an African-American woman.

I've never felt disrespected in Paris. My advice is to not be a douche.

Yeah, everyone was very cool to me in Paris. The key is to show dominance immediately and speak English very slowly and loudly until they get it.

Yes, just walk into a restaurant and immediately ask the waiter to tell you what their whores devores are.
-
The last time I was in Paris, I ducked into a little brasserie and, after having the brie and Cabernet Sauvignon passed to me, interacted with the waitress only in French. It was the first time I had succeeded in conducting a Paris restaurant experience solely in the native tongue. AMA

does anyone else have problems with Apple podcasts randomly downloading episodes from two or three years ago for some feeds and then marking new episodes as "played" so they don't show up in the "downloaded" list. I've tried several fixes but it continues to annoy me. Maybe I need to switch to a new podcasting app but I would like to stick with the native Apple podcasts app if possible.

Same, I really wish I could. I can't even listen to music. I actually thought about this recently while my family was bothering me at the beach while I was trying to have beach drinks and read my book. I've been trying to read at night for a few minutes while the family is watching tv. I'm not sure I have the patience to see if I can train myself to be able to do it, but i'm wondering if its possible. Very doubtful for me at least since I've done it a few nights now and I think i've gotten through 9 words of my book,

I can't go back to 1x speed, everyone sounds like they're slurring their words. If you want to increase the number of podcasts you listen to in a set amount of time, going to 1.2x has never bothered anyone if I'm showing them a clip or something. And it doesn't take long to go from that to 1.5x. But the Goldilocks speed for me is 1.8x.
-
If I'm driving and 100% focused on a podcast, I can speed it up. When I'm working, I zone in and out so regular speed and not super in-depth are the way to go.

I've been driving a lot lately, and I also really like listening to Smartless. Every episode has stuff in it that makes me laugh. However, they are all terrible at interviewing. The hosts (esp Jason) love to hear themselves talk, but they rarely get around to forming an actual question or even letting the guest reply before they start talking over them. Not sure if this is an intentional running gag, or if that's just who they are, or maybe a little of both?
-
Yeah they're terrible at interviewing but really good at making fun of each other

smartless is terrible IMO.

Smartless is like a sitcom, imo. It's like Applebees. There isn't much actually good there, and as long as you are ok with that and just want some cheap laughs, then it is fine until something better comes on.

:surprised:The Rest is History is doing a fascinating series about the sinking of Titanic right now. Up to six episodes so far.

I've been listening as well. I keep thinking it's going to get boring but it hasn't!
Still a very compelling story after 112 years

I switched to spotify for organizing podcasts from apple podcasts (because apple podcasts kept randomly downloading 2 year-old episodes) a few months ago and I have been pretty happy with it. I have a family sub so everyone can enjoy ad-free music and it is kind of nice to keep music, podcasts and audiobooks all in one app. Spotify seems to play fairly well with the Apple CarPlay.

Musk and Segall episodes are fantastic but really the obscure ones are some of my favs

It's been mentioned but always ok to bring up! The baseball ones are amazing

Charles Lightoller who played a prominent roll in getting people off of Titanic later used his private boat to spy on uboats and he assisted in the dunkirk evacuation.
The movie Dunkirk features a character based on Lightoller, old man in the boat that picks up Cillian Murphy.
Just a little FYR

Best Smartless interview to date was with Arnold. They did a good job letting him tell his life story. Looking forward to the interview with the presidents.

Arnold's life story IS really fascinating. Probably more fascinating than the Presidents'.

Sorry to keep beating my The Rest is History drum ITT but they just did an interview with Tom Hanks about going to the moon that was both fascinating and entertaining. Highly recommend if you have any interest in space exploration whatsoever.

Almost surprised they don't get more sh1t for the roasting of Sean for his dad leaving them when he was young and the amount of gay jokes towards him.

Didn't you watch Apollo 13? It was all about how Tom Hanks made it to the moon.

If you haven't seen it, it's a great documentary that I highly recommend.

I assume you mean mockumentary, since we've never been to the moon. :jeffy:

I hope Buzz keeps punching truthers until he punches his way through them all. I only hope he has time left to do so.

Sheesh. I hope he won't be prosecuted for this. Sometimes people deserve a good ass kicking.
