I don't know of any natural disaster that gets people as giddy as tornadoes. It's kind of strange to see so much joy from something destructive.

'nado season started like three months ago, mouthbreathers.
There was alledgedly a mile-wide nado on the ground in western KS about a month ago. Unconfirmed reports confirm that confirmed reports of the tornado's size are unconfirmed.

I actually moved down to Mobile, AL a few days before Katrina got into the gulf. Was a pretty fantastic time, however, afterward it completely sucked. Braved Biloxi and Gulfport a few days after it happened that was a flat out nightmare.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Paka
Was living in Guam when this happened. No power for 2 weeks, eating spam, and I lived on the military base. :flush:
Too young to party, but old enough to have to wake up at 4am to lay towels on water the started coming in the front door, and our house was on a hill, a good 5 feet above and 20 feet back from the storm drains clogged with palm tree branches.
-
I was initially head to Biloxi when the prediction that it would almost come straight up the bay. But when it switched i decided to sit it out. I was headed across the bay a day or so before it hit (outer bands coming in) the bay was empty, like just mud where it's usually relatively deep. That's when i said holy eff this isn't good. Here's a video of a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) on top of a building. I had friends come crash with us, as the water had basically risen to the top of stop signs about a mile from where they lived.
I lived in a pretty spot that was all townhomes and a ton of marines and South Alabama students. After the whole thing was over the they placed basically a ban on driving around in public, but we were able to go out with the Marines to look at the damage.
Kind of cool chucking a pine cone about 250 yards. day after was the worse, hot, humid, no wind, no power.
-
That sounds crazy and I can only imagine. Glad I wasn't there for that. Gustav was a blast! :pbj: ....for like three days until all the liquor and food ran out and it got old sitting in hot-ass muggy weather. Then I bailed and went to my Grandma's house in Chattanooga.
Great book on Katrina: Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers. Increds. Amazing. Read it.

Yeah stormtrack.org bbs'ers will be all over it.
And surveying these storms will be very difficult in deciding which tornadoes caused what, since there are so many of them. Incredible outbreak since Monday. Well over 200 tornadoes reported.
edit
To clarify, usually NOAA gives stats on exactly which tornado did what damage, and then which tornado killed what person. But there is so much chaos that they may never know for sure.

Not sure but the stories coming out have been pretty horrific. Long snapper for Bama was huddled with his gf in a closet and the tornado ripped them out and carried him at least 50 feet. He survived with just a broken wrist but she was killed :embarrassed:
EDIT: He was evidently thrown 50 yards not feet. Gf's body was found 100 yards away.

Has now risen to 280. This is the largest loss of life since 329 died in a storm in April of 1974. I have a bad feeling this is going to end up topping that.

Pretty good read on how this outbreak is too much to handle for the current NWS survey program, which is under funded and under staffed and won't even take information from experts outside the NWS.
So although this is one of the worst outbreaks in history, it will not be fully understood from a damage/EF rating perspective

Death toll up to 251
holy eff. did they say how many students?
Not sure but the stories coming out have been pretty horrific. Long snapper for Bama was huddled with his gf in a closet and the tornado ripped them out and carried him at least 50 feet. He survived with just a broken wrist but she was killed :embarrassed:
EDIT: He was evidently thrown 50 yards not feet. Gf's body was found 100 yards away.
Cory Adams would have snapped his girl to safety and blocked down on the twister.

Mississippi tornado was upgraded to EF-5 today....making that 3 for the outbreak. Crazy stuff.

guys i've got my chaser cam all mounted and ready to go for today and tonight's action. i'm literally foaming at the mouth thinking about these massive thunderbusters that are coming our way!!
my models are showing some pretty interesting stuff and the low front should set up nicely for a cold/warm blanket, mix that in with the barometric pressure and we could be in for a long night gentlemen!!
i'll be sure and update my models throughout the day and let everyone here know what part of the storm i'm going to be chasin' so that if anyone wants to hop into the fan and chase with me they can - if i'm in your neck of the woods.
i've got my fingers crossed that these models don't lie because it could be one interesting night! i'll check back later- good chasin' to everyone, over and out and BE SAFE OUT THERE, TORNADOS DON'T LIE!!

re: Accuweather
Last year, Jeremy Goodwin mentioned how Accuweather was delaying information coming from NOAA to the stations. I wasn't sure what he meant and he wouldn't expand on it. thought it was interesting.

SPC AC 191237
DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0737 AM CDT THU MAY 19 2011
VALID 191300Z - 201200Z
...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM WEST CENTRAL TX INTO
KS/NEB...
...CENTRAL/SOUTHERN PLAINS...
THE WESTERN UPPER LOW CENTER WILL LIFT SLOWLY NORTHWARD DURING THIS
FORECAST PERIOD...WHILE A 70-80 KNOT MID LEVEL JET MAX ROTATES
AROUND THE LOW AND INTO THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS. AMPLE LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE IS ALREADY IN PLACE OVER THE SOUTHERN PLAINS...AND WILL
ONLY INCREASE TODAY AS CONTINUED SOUTHERLY LOW LEVEL WINDS TRANSPORT
MID 60S DEWPOINTS INTO SOUTHERN KS. A WELL-DEFINED SURFACE DRYLINE
IS EXPECTED TO BECOME ESTABLISHED BY MID AFTERNOON FROM
SOUTH-CENTRAL KS INTO WESTERN OK...AND WILL BE THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL.
CURRENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP DURING THE
MID AFTERNOON OVER NORTHWEST OK AND SOUTH-CENTRAL KS ALONG THE
DRYLINE. TEMPERATURES WELL INTO THE 80S AND DEWPOINTS IN THE MID
60S WILL YIELD MLCAPE VALUES OF 2500-3000 J/KG AND VERY LITTLE CINH.
A FEW DISCRETE SUPERCELLS APPEAR LIKELY WITH VERY LARGE HAIL AND
TORNADOES POSSIBLE. ACTIVITY SHOULD DEVELOP NORTH-NORTHEASTWARD
INTO CENTRAL KS DURING THE EVENING WITH A CONTINUED RISK OF SEVERE
STORMS. STRENGTHENING LOW LEVEL WIND FIELDS DURING THE EARLY
EVENING COULD RESULT IN A STRONG TORNADO OR TWO IN THIS AREA.
OVERNIGHT...STRONG STORMS PRODUCING HAIL MAY SPREAD AS FAR NORTH AS
SOUTHERN NEB. THE PRIMARY LIMITING FACTOR FOR A MORE WIDESPREAD
SEVERE WEATHER EVENT WILL BE THE WEAK LARGE SCALE FORCING...WHICH
MAY LIMIT THE NUMBER OF INTENSE STORMS THAT DEVELOP.
THE POTENTIAL FOR THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT SOUTHWARD ALONG THE
DRYLINE OVER SOUTHWEST OK INTO NORTHWEST TX IS MORE CONDITIONAL.
HOWEVER...SEVERAL MODELS DO SHOW AT LEAST ISOLATED STORMS ALONG THIS
CORRIDOR. STORMS THAT CAN FORM SHOULD BE RESTRICTED TO THE NARROW
AXIS IMMEDIATELY EAST OF THE DRYLINE...AND SHOULD WEAKEN RAPIDLY AS
THEY MOVE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE OF CONVERGENCE AND INTO A MORE CAPPED
ENVIRONMENT.
LATE TONIGHT...A STRONGER UPPER SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL EJECT INTO TX.
THIS IS EXPECTED TO RESULT IN MORE WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY
OVER WEST CENTRAL TX...MAINLY AFTER 06Z. LARGE HAIL APPEARS LIKELY
WITH THESE STORMS SO HAVE EXTENDED THE SLIGHT RISK SOUTHWARD.
...MID ATLANTIC STATES INTO SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND...
THE UPPER LOW CURRENTLY OVER THE UPPER OH VALLEY IS FORECAST TO MOVE
EASTWARD AND INTO PA/NY BY FRIDAY MORNING. SIMILAR TO THE PAST FEW
DAYS...SUFFICIENT DEEP LAYER VERTICAL SHEAR IS PRESENT ACROSS THE
MID ATLANTIC STATES AND SOUTHWEST NEW ENGLAND FOR SOME RISK OF
ORGANIZED/ROTATING STORMS THIS AFTERNOON. COOL TEMPERATURES ALOFT
ASSOCIATED WITH THE UPPER LOW MAY ALSO RESULT IN HAIL IN THE
STRONGEST CORES. HOWEVER...THE OVERALL THREAT FOR SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS APPEARS RATHER MINIMAL SO WILL MAINTAIN ONLY 5%
PROBABILITIES AT THIS TIME.

not really sure why Forbes felt the need to come up with his own tornado predictions...he didn't like NOAA's apparently??
I guess he has enough cred in the tornado field to do whatever the eff he wants.

A tornado outbreak is expected later today and tonight!
The conditions are coming together for a major severe weather outbreak today. A HIGH RISK has been placed over parts of Kansas and Oklahoma.
A powerful storm system is about to move out into the plains. Strong energy aloft will be coming over a late May warm and very humid air mass. There are still a few questions that must be answered today, but everything we are looking at points to a tornado outbreak developing later this afternoon and evening from the Nebraska/Kansas border south into Oklahoma possibly all the way down to north Texas. This threat will then shift east tonight into western Missouri extending south to the Arkansas/Oklahoma border.
A low pressure area will intensify near the Oklahoma/Kansas border and this is the system that storm chasers should pay close attention to. Where will the surface low be located at 7 PM this evening? You should try to position your chase team just north and northeast of the surface low for the highest tornado potential. This low pressure area is then expected to strengthen further and lift into northern or central Kansas tonight which will continue the tornado threat into the night time hours.

@usweatherexpert : This high of a tornado risk is only forecast once every 5-10 years

Also, lol @ that chaser rating the tornado an F5. What a dipshit.

They cut away to the vertical shot, and they said this thing is about 60,000 feet high.
I can't even fathom that. If I were flying next to this thing at 30,000 feet, it would be twice as high as I was at that moment. That's just surreal to me.

Fox News' coverage is laughable. Shep is confusing the inbound/outbound velocities with the precipitation reflectivity. :flush:
Also said "There's Kansas City... it's passed Kansas City" (referring to the storm)
And the storm is still an hour away. Clearly has no idea what he's talking about and can't even read a map

i think noble and norman may have gotten very, very lucky. Goldsby not so much.
As a resident of Norman I can not believe how lucky I am. crap hit everywhere but Norman. Been told the crap broke up on the south edge of the OU campus (where the National Weather Center is).

A little after 11am, there were three or so that were around 132nd and Metcalf, 155th and metcalf, and one in louisburg. Radio has talked about unconfirmed ones around 119th and state line.

Took off for lunch at 435/Metcalf area just after the sirens sounded. I actually thought they were just the weekly sirens because there weren't any dark skies. Made a Chipotle run to around 135th and heard the warning come over the radio. Ran in, got my burrito, drove back to work as the funnel was chasing me. Turned into the parking lot at work as there were reports of it being at 135th and Metcalf. Ran in and hopped into the basement with the rest of the staff. For some reason they kept us down there until it was north of downtown.
The moral of the story is: Chipotle > mother nature.
eff that bitch.

No. Johnson County soccer moms watched Twister too often, making up stuff.
But I'm ok and sounding the emaw all clear.

I was outside at Westin pool in Crown Center. If you are scared of a warm rain, you would have been petrified. But otherwise nothing.

I liken tornadoes to basketball games.

I'm not sure if this belongs in the cell phone users thread or not but I'd just like to say... "Hey Sprint... you rough ridin' suck!!!" Just now getting text messages from 11:35am. Could make calls, send, or receive texts for almost two hours. Nice work Sprint. I felt so elite next to folks with their iPhone talking to their kids and buddies over near ground zero getting reports. rough ridin' PATHETIC SPRINT!! :shakesfist:

Pretty impressive storms considering it was a cold core setup, unlike that was happening last night. Usually these aren't very strong and long lasting.

There are just way more fat poor people in the US than you probably realize. You can go to any midwestern city and 80% of the city is filled with poor fat people. The odds are just in favor of the tornadoes hitting their houses.

Love watching storm chasers from original link go about everyday activities. The only active cam right now is 3 middle-age tucks going through a McDonalds drive-thru. Large coffee, no sugar, 3 ice cubes.
-
About got myself in some crap tonight. Some old balls watching this storm not knowing what was going on in a 5-mile no passing area. Finally got myself around them punching it going 95+ down the highway. After that happened ended up with branches flying across the vehicle and into the side of it. Finally made it thru there after a couple miles and went to pull over to get another look only to see the weather channel with their 50 fuckin vehicles out there :shakesfist:. Wish I had some good crap to show you guys but I was too busy "corepunching a tornado" because of idiots....and also shitting my pants because of flying debris....was fun tho :driving:  :drink:.

Abilene got the hell beaten out of it last night. My dad took some damage to his brand new camper plus broken siding on his house. Uncle had the window busted out of his SUV. Several power poles down. Baseball or bigger.

Amazing article about 15 random people who survived the tornado in a walk in cooler at a gas station. If you dont like reading the youtube video in the middle is worth it on its own, dude took 5 minutes of audio of everyone while they were inside the cooler.

A very strong storm system is about to move into the western parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Tornadoes, very large hail and straight line winds are a good bet today for this area. This storm system is moving slowly and by Friday it will the be Central third of Kansas, Oklahoma and North Central Texas turn. Once again the tri-fecta of severe weather will be likely including some strong long-track tornadoes. Saturday is the big show. Things are setting up for a major outbreak over central and eastern Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. This one could be bad.
Now if morning storms and cloud cover hold on longer than forecasted and lessen the heating over these areas then it may not be as bad but Severe weather is look likely this weekend.
Flooding will be a real threat as well with storms going over the same place multiple days.

it seems like it's raining in vegas about every other time I'm there. I think their it never rains here crap is just that, crap. rains constantly you dumbasses.

friend/co-worker and family moved to vegas. Now every time some Kansan has a weather related facebook status...him or his wife must comment on how lovely the weather is there. hmmmm.
-
vegas is such a disgusting place. i don't like going outside there.
-
agreed clams. also, dubdub, your friend is full of crap. the weather hasn't been nice in vegas in the history of it being on the earth. it's either blisteringly hot, windy and cold or rainy. there is no nice spring/fall day in vegas. ever. of all time.
I do like to stand in the pool when it's 110 there and drink my drink though
-
Stormnut I am on my way back to KS today should I just stay in ATL as everyone in SC KS will likely be dead after tonight and tomorrow?

at first south of I-70 to the oklahoma-Texas border. Basically I 35 then in the evening and overnight Northeast Kansas and Missouri That is the worst Tornadoes are possible from North of Omaha all the way south to Dallas.
-
hmmmm, I just lowered my homeowners deductible to $500 so I feel pretty good about this.
-
If you get minor hail damage you should just pocket the insurance money.

Very rarely does hail damage actually "damage" the roof. Trust me, I worked as a roofer for a few summers in high school

Most of the insurance adjusters know jack crap about roofing. We replaced so many roofs that were in near prestine condition simply because the insurance company paid for it.
-
one of my vehicles just got some minor hail damage. 2,000 w/ 500 then going to the deductable. just going to keep the 1500 because you really kind of have to look close to see any of the small little dents. pete should've done this to pay for his tree stuff.

If this storm was a Japanese monster movie it would be one about the littlest bitch storm that could never even get very bad or make tornadoes or anything
-
If this storm was the movie Perfect Storm it would be about the most perfectly stupid storm of all time that nobody even cared about or anything
-
If this storm was the movie Twister nobody would watch it because it's boring as crap all the way to the bank
-
i'm thinking about going camping tonight. can't think of any reason not to. tuttle or pott2 is the only debate.

my grandmother's neighbor's dogs were killed by the tornado that is being called the salina tornado but was actually the marquette tornado.
Aside from the tornado that touched down at the niles and I-70 intersection, which is outside of Salina, I don't think there was ever a tornado on the ground in Salina.
yeah and it was a dust devil at that point. when it passed marquette it was hurricane sized.

I hope Drew and Cody had a good night's rest.
here is video from the group that got caught in the tornado. start watching at around seven minutes. tornado comes at around eight minutes.

OT but we got tons of hail on the 9th and I think I may be getting a new roof, maybe a deck staining, grill cover and possibly grill out of the deal. called in a claim but they haven't come out yet. they're replacing the roofs on all the houses around mine so I'm pretty confident I'll get one too.

This spring has been really boring weather-wise, except for the freak snow storm, which was more shitty than exciting. I think only two or three good thunderstorms, no green skies, wtf? We don't have mountains here, but at least we're supposed to have cool weather.

Chased with Brandon Ivey and Sean Casey today.
We made a bad move of trying to ditch all the amateurs on the road and catch a southern cell because the cell we left dropped the tornado.

The TIV didn't go out last night.

Landthieves folks on twitter saying it's bad.
I guess the tornado was reported as being 1.25 miles wide and had a debris ball that was 2 miles wide. Also, said it stalled out right on tip of a high school.

Guy named "Lando" being interviewed on weather channel.

Man... this looks just as bad as Joplin.

At an elementary there are about 24 kids trapped under the rubble and they are clearing everyone out of the area so they can't see them pulling bodies out. Guy in news said they are moving people out so there aren't cameras for the "recovery".
-
:frown:
-
Said that school is stopping the "search and rescue" and starting the "recovery" part with 24 kids unaccounted for.
Update: confirmed 7 kids drown and 20-30 more missing. Think it's 3rd grade class.

The old F-scale system topped out at 318mph. In 1999 they thought for awhile they may have to increase the top speed because a new near-surface wind speed record was recorded at 318mph in an F5 tornado. That tornado/wind speed was recorded in Moore, OK.

I'd like to keep this out of the Pit but how can those who have some faithful belief in a loving god explain this. This was literally an "act of god"
Not a car accident or a deranged gun man. It was a huge death storm that descended from the clouds and killed twenty little kids at school. No human elements at all. No free choice or human decisions. Just suffering.

A belief in God is a belief that these kids are in a better place. Their families are suffering, but everybody dies, and life is short no matter how long you live.

Chasing is getting dangerous lately.

Agree, too many people, getting too close. Tim's research was based on dropping probes in front of tornadoes. It is still early but in looking at different information it looks as if they were heading to lay down probes in the El Reno Tornado and it shifted from a east south easterly tornado to a north east moving one in a matter of seconds. Positively unpredictable. That is why I know I have no business being any were that close to a storm and I never will.

That crap better stop. I can't believe that the news people down there were actually saying that was a good idea. It's not a rough ridin' hurricane were your have DAYS notice. If anything comes of this I am hoping for at the very least building codes be updated to mandate business and new housing construction be required to have some sort of tornado shelter build that can withstand at least an EF3.
-
People have been fleeing these things for years down there. What if it's the crazy storm chasers clogging the roadways?

Yes it is a problem. I was on the Smith Center storm Monday and the chasers were just plan stupid. The storm paralled Hyw 36 the whole time and god forbid if it would have dropped on on 36 is would have just throw cars left and right. I had exit options planed to move south so felt comfortable but may I should not have. I am seriously reevaluating the way I think about chasing because of this. Tim was the LHC Bill Snyder of research chasing.
-
I was in Oklahoma the day of the Moore storm and we were chasing a cell south of there an hour away, and I just couldn't believe the number of chasers that I saw that day and in the previous two days before that.
I saw people without headlights on, people pulling out in front of others, and fools passing dangerously.
There is going to be a pile up someday.

The worse I saw was one April 14th last year. I got on that storm south west of Salina and followed it all the way up to Northern Riley county. I did not know it at the time because I was too busy watch the storm and monitoring the radar but my buddy, who was driving was driving over the speed limit at time because we were in the middle of the "pack" of about 50 chasers. SPEEDING!!!!! I was so pissed when I found out. That was just to keep the flow. If you are speeding to get out of the way of storm, that's one thing but to catch a storm. It should never rough ridin' be that way. I really hate how chasing has become.

I don't consider Tim a storm "chaser" I feel right now that would be like calling a Solder how died for his country a mercenary. He was in it for the science and he had such a passion for it. He will be missed greatly.

Kansas needs to charge a significant storm chasing tax.

Stupid and unenforceable. What really needs to happen, IMO, is the responsible chasers need to come together and forge a self governing orginzation to keep our hobby safe and responsible as well as not forget one of our primary goals is to report ground truth. Let all the locals and Yahoo chasers pay for it with all the strength of local laws (speeding is illegal, impeding the travel of emergency vehicles is as well.)

No. He was doing it to keep flow with the mess we were in. I was pissed after the fact when I found out. I have not had him drive ever since.

When did they start arbitrarily changing the storm categories to "super". I know they called tropical storm Sandy a "super" storm for some reason, but now a cat 5 typhoon is a super storm? :dunno:

That sounds crazy and I can only imagine. Glad I wasn't there for that. Gustav was a blast! :pbj: ....for like three days until all the liquor and food ran out and it got old sitting in hot-ass muggy weather. Then I bailed and went to my Grandma's house in Chattanooga.
Great book on Katrina: Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers. Increds. Amazing. Read it.
*edit*: Who will write a book about MHK's microburst? :bracketmouse: <--But with microburst book
Skinny I just started reading 1 dead in the attic after katrina by chris rose (from the times-picayune), so far pretty good. Might be one worth checking out if you're still interested in the aftermath of katrina. Also, did you watch the series Treme' on hbo?

Oh don't be a dick. I study the weather, and I'm well aware of what happened yesterday and what happens every time tornadoes of this magnitude hit people. As meteorologists, we've got to do better, and there's research ongoing that within the next 5-10 years should revolutionize the severe weather warning process in a big way.
-
That seems like an optimistic goal considering chasers can't find two huge tornadoes now. :dunno:

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) says as of 10 p.m. Monday night US Highway 24 from the US-77 junction to the K-113 junction is closed to all traffic northwest of Manhattan due to downed power lines.
The lines came down just after 9:00 p.m. when winds exceeding 60 mph raced through the area.
KDOT says the estimated re-opening of the highway is sometime Tuesday, but may not be done in time for the Tuesday morning commute so drivers are being told to take alternate routes.
Downed power lines were also being reported on 52nd street and a Kansas First News photographer said the Manhattan Menard’s sign was “shredded” by the winds.
As of 6:35am Tuesday, 704 people were without power in Riley County, 1528 in Leavenworth County, Shawnee with 143 outages, Douglas had 1677 outages and Osage and Wabaunsee counties had 22r outages according to Westar Energy.

Sadly, it's just not true. Two years and my grass still hasn't really grown in. I think I'm going to switch seed types this fall when I overseed. It grows so slowly that I only have to mow once a month (which wouldn't be bad if it filled in nicely). Neighbors have to mow weekly (of course they've been her a few years longer than me)

Torcon level: Pud

let me tell you guys a little something about days like today. two things can happen and they are more/less outlined like this....
1)some storms go through the area earlier in the day and suck a lot of potential energy out of the sky by decreasing the air temperature and reducing the amount of moisture aka humidity in the air. if this happens, the later storms will not be very strong.
2)nothing happens early in the day, the sky becomes charged and then we get tornadoes, large baseball hail and everybody dies.

I was in Maes basement during the '08 tornado. Canco that it is very safe.
Pro tip: Right before the 'nado hits be sure to order an extra drink, even if you don't need one at the time. Jeff will stop serving booze and let anyone in the door for shelter because he is a good human being.

We got a crap ton of hail in Lenexa, mostly pea to sub-marble size but a few were nickle to quarter size.
Also! I love how people describe the size of the hail they're seeing.

well if it totals it i dont give a crap.

great comeback
and a hailstorm isn’t going to total your fully covered car
-
great comeback
and a hailstorm isn’t going to total your fully covered car
wait are we arguing? and what? of course hail will total out a car. very easily in fact
-
I guess if you’re driving a 92 ford probe but ya not anything really worth throwing full coverage at
-
in kansas TLT = 75%
that's a lot of body work on a $50k+ vehicle
-
My cousin has an old basement. Spiders and snakes. What should he do if a tornader is headed for his house? Is this wind a tornado, dang close.
-
so your car gets hailed up
and hail damage is easy to do
but it's not totaled because the damage is less than 75% of the value of the vehicle
you end up with a car that was worth less than what it was before the hail storm and a dinged car fax report which is going to make in incrementally more difficult to sell when the time comes
seems like something no one would want imo

Welp nice knowing you guys

It basically split Lawrence and KC heading NE. Big tornado, phew, yeah it could have been a lot worse. It picked up outside just before 435 and now there’s two NE of the KC metro.

My kid missed school to play soccer on Monday. I was in a hotel with tons of kids that had no experience with tornadoes that were either completely nonchalant or completely freaking out. Turns out the hotel was something like 2 or 3 miles north of the path. We lost power for a few hours, but everything ended up okay.
Anyway, the tornado went close to the fields, and the storm damaged a bunch of goals, so no Monday games. (https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipP371GM0pkcERd087l7qw6XribIQeSRdcsVGEQb)

Originally the videos seemed fake to me, like they were almost too surreal. Reed Timmer liked/quoted tweeted them so I think they are real. I mean I would probably have the same reaction being THAT close to a tornado. I mean the videos don’t do it justice if they are real.

Wichita, Kansas, 9 June 2011: Temperatures rose from 85 to 102 °F (29 to 39 °C) between 12:22 and 12:42 am. The heat burst caused some wind damage (40–50 mph or 64–80 km/h) and local residents reported the phenomenon to area weather stations

Yeah it’s like 49 degrees out, came out of nowhere. I could barely hear the sirens that were going off in south OP. It’s just raining here.
-
I'm just North of 435 and it was like barely misting rain. I can still hear thunder every once in a while, but nothing else.

Lezak just said we haven’t even had a tornado watch for the KC metro in 2 years.
What? How is that even possible? Like I don't understand this at all.

That's just what he said.

That's crazy if true. I live significantly north and a bit east of KC and I can't remember the last time I went a year without multiple tornado watches and at least one warning. We've already had a watch this year and the last one before last week was in November. I get no warnings but I don't know how anyone in the plains could go two years without a watch.
-
The quality of the graphic sucks but i do believe there was a lack tornados is central to eastern kansas last year. I'd seen some other tweets on it that I can't find now. not very common for sure.

That's wild, it does contradict that KC hasn't even had a tornado watch in two years tho.

tornado reports doesn't necessarily mean there was a tornado watch. Although after some more twitter searching, there was a lot of conflicting data out there. Either way, not as many nados as normal.
Also the south is about to get bent over today. :ohno:

I certainly agree with you when it comes to tornadoes without watches, although that map indicates there were 9 tornadoes in the KC area on the Missouri side and 3 on the Kansas side, I doubt that many came without a watch. It's more possible that Lezak or whomever said that just made a mistake.
Weather twitter is in a tizzy because the dreaded "some people" called yesterday's outbreak a dud, although all of the people railing against it didn't quote tweet anyone actually saying that. Seeing some of the damage from the outbreak, I'm amazed that no one died, even though none of the tornadoes hit an urban area.
I discovered this website and I love it. https://tornadopaths.org/

Teachers trying to be super calm but you can tell they are stressed. sirens blaring outside. the school ran the drill super well. Different people have reported that we received 8-11" of rain last night. Lot of flooding of fields visible on both sides of K-39 as you go across Wilson County into Neosho County.

Storms went through Oklahoma last night. I guess same massive tornado formed over night in SE OK, but it was in the middle of nowhere & no one got hurt.
Last night was the loudest lightning I’ve ever heard. I live below the approach path of the Tulsa airport. At 2am 2 cracks hit back-to-back that shook my house & rumbled for 30 seconds after. I got up & ran outside because I thought a plane exploded on approach & the after rumble was the sound of the plane going down. I’ve been 50 feet from a metal high power line tower that got struck & this was more violent than that.
-
House at the top of the hill on my street was struck last weekend, just the attic area caught fire and everyone was ok but it's probably a total loss

This supercell produced three different tornado warnings last night in western Kansas. The inflow of air was intense. Incredible lightning.

I watched Reed Timmer chase that storm literally for hours last night and I don't think it ever spawned a 'nado. What a tease.

Oh yeah, I saw that. We were out there for probably 2-3 hours shooting. The rest of the time was me driving, and stopping to gets snacks once in jetmore. Nicname jr loves it. Funnily enough, we picked our spot on the way out when all the other spotters were camped in dodge. when we got there only one other vehicle was there. Then a bunch of other cars showed up. He felt pretty great about getting to such a good spot before most everyone else.
He pays for some service where he has a radar on his phone that shows green dots for all the other chasers as well. Gets all geeked out when a big name chaser is in the area.
I was a nervous wreck at first, but it was a pretty great experience
