I don't understand the picture of the bull riding, but that looks mumped up. Corn hole is throwing a little 6x6" bean bag at board that sets on the ground at an incline about 20 feet away. You try to throw the bean bag into a hole in the board. Use this expression every time you or your partner makes it in the hole: "LIKE A BOSS!"
I would start the game by feeling the bag. It is most assuredly filled with beans. However, feel the bag with an inquisitive look on your face. After 8-10 seconds, say, "Crap, you guys have these cheap ass bean bags for corn hole. Where I come from we use actual corn in our corn hole bags. I am probably not going to be worth a piss tonight at throwing these bean bags. I might as well drink another dozen King Tuts while we are playing."I don't understand the picture of the bull riding, but that looks mumped up. Finally. Some actionable advice. Thank you, dobber. And yes, the bull riding also threw me (<--lol!) during my investigation. Also, are the bean bags filled with corn?

Why only those 2 places?
I've been to Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois, California off the top of my head and each one had a dollar dance. It's not really a big deal. Everybody who wants to just comes up and dances with the bride or groom for 30 seconds. The best man/maid of honor collect a dollar or whatever you want to give. How does that not sound terrible to you? I wouldn't have wanted to do it at my wedding even if I knew it was a thing at the time. Just awful for guests and marrieds alike. I don't want to dance with the bride or groom when I'm a guest. Never crossed my mind. I want to get them a nice gift and party hardy.
As far as why only those two places, I'm not the boss of where people I know get married.
My wife made over $1200 dollars on our dollar dance. I thought they should do it again! Also, if you are only giving a buck, then you are a jayhawk outted.
"Chi-pol-tay"
It's just a nice way to say hi to the bride (or groom) and give them a little honeymoon cash. Looking down on it is a wannabe White Coastener thing.agreed.. and we all know those crazy kids could use the cash, amirite

Rusty is right here. People can't possibly dislike things that they don't find enjoyable. Clearly an attempt by all involved to be cool and something that they're not. Bunch of posers. I regret my involvement, don't know what I was thinking.

to be fair, you did say it was for "poors". But I'm sure that was just about disliking an activity.
Everybody who wants to just comes up and dances with the bride or groom for 30 seconds. The best man/maid of honor collect a dollar or whatever you want to give. This is a pretty established tradition that comes fromEuropean immigrantspoors obviously.
you still get the gift bread.
it's not an either/or.
(i still agree that it's not fun)

I know. I don't want their paper money or their dance touches. Just gifts later and party rocking now. I'm not sure I understand the board divide on this one honestly. #liveandlearn #acceptance

No I didn't. I speculated it originated from poors. Now it's just a stupid thing that people with or without money do.

I dislike the dancing/imposition on both sides of the equation. I would much prefer to give/receive a nice gift that can be opened later than have to be harassed on the dance floor in exchange for filthy paper money. That's how strip clubs operate.

no. nondenominational ceremony took less than fifteen minutes by design. the sole focus was fun for everyone at the reception. did the table rounds by way of thanks/greeting. no garter toss or bouquet toss. did cut cake and have a first dance. limited fanfare. only two speeches (maid of honor/best man) both concise and sufficiently funny/endearing. i actually had fun.

i see more value (to the wedding participants) in both of those than any of the other crap he cut.

if you were my irl friend and were at my wedding and i flipped you off at the church we would have grinned big as crap at each other and really just been perfectly happy in that one tiny moment. would have been great. i just know it. i wish we could know that joy together.

I've been to Illinois and Arizona weddings and there were no dollar dances. Never heard of it. Sounds terrible.
This is a pretty established tradition that comes from European immigrants.
This one was in the gym attached to the local church and the priest kicked everyone out after the bride's family tried to sneak in a bunch of kegs. That crap don't fly. You have to buy them through the church.
ugh, wedding party choreographed novelty dancesYes to this. The first one was awesome, until I saw the second one. Then the first one sucked just like all of the rest of them.

Salina Police arrest a man late Friday night for breaking into a liquor store, and taking 4 bottles of vodka. Captain Mike Sweeney said officers were sent to
T&R Liquor at 153 N. Broadway just before 11 p.m., after witnesses reported a man break a window out of a door to gain entry to the liquor store.
51-year-old McCarver L. Lawson was found hiding in a truck in the 100 block of S. Cherry with $16 worth of Barton Vodka nearby.
Lawson was arrested on requested charges of burglary, theft, and damage to property. A rock was used to break the glass in the door. Damage was estimated at $300.

My mom lives in an interesting little suburb with a lot of local restaurants, of which are 3 pizza places. My cousin and I were going to get a pizza and I told her 2 of the places are pretty good, and one of them is mega expensive and just ok. My white midwesterner aunt overhears all this and asks with a very annoyed tone "don't they just have a dominos or something so you know what you're getting?"
My only response to her was "you're so white midwesterner"
I have never heard of Dorothy Lynch before. Assumed it just wasn't sold in IL, but it is according to their store locator. It's main ingredient is tomato soup. Seems like it really fits the bill.

It's just that the O is so good that it makes the D look bad. But watch it, you have to pass the ball so quickly and get your shot off so quickly because you have like .04 seconds before a hand is in your face/on the ball.

I think rusty mixed up OKC and SANIt's only Kansas's proximity to OKC that makes you think this. Westbrook vs. the Big Fundamental? Please.
Really? I know about 3 Spurs fans, probably less. Not as fans, but as "they aren't flashy, they actually pass!" admirers
people everywhere except in miami and winters hate the heatExactly. Once those series were over white midwesterners went back to not caring about the Spurs.

He's actually able to view us objectively now, and he is probably right about the Spurs.I'm actually probably more biased against the Spurs because I'm a bandwagon Warriors fan and am heavily influenced by a high school facebook friend who coaches girls high school basketball in Kansas and shares a lot of Spurs highlights like "now this is TEAM basketball. In the NBA!" and never shares Warrior highlights. Also they have a player nicknamed "the big fundamental" which probably appeals to certain demographics more than others.
Everyone loves westbrook tho, no idea what you're talking about thereReally? People HATED him when he would take big shots instead of Durant for quite a while (like 3-4 years ago). The Thunder bandwagon must have gotten stronger.

are you thinking that westbrook is a little too "black" for white midwesterners to like?Maybe. There's been stuff like this for a long time:

10 SIGNS YOU WERE BORN AND RAISED IN KANSAS
BY JOSEPH GRIFFIN
NOVEMBER 28, 2016
1. You have fond memories of drinking Natural Light or Keystone in a field.
If you were born in Kansas, chances are some of the best memories you have revolve around getting together with a group of friends and drinking cheap beer on a hot summer night in a field in the middle of nowhere under an endless sky, dreaming about the future. It’s the simple things that count in Kansas.
2. You have seen The Wizard of Oz more than a dozen times.
Yeah, sure, there’s all the “How’s Toto?” jokes. Or, “We’re not in Kansas, anymore.” Fine, Kansans have heard them all. But, when I was a kid, it was a yearly ritual to watch the local broadcast of The Wizard of Oz and something to look forward to all year.
3. You’ve probably gotten your car stuck in a minimum maintenance road at some point.
In Kansas, you’ll spend at least some of your driving time on country roads. One mistake you only need to make once is to come upon a sign that reads, “Minimum Maintenance Road Travel at Your Own Risk” and then decide to chance it anyway. You think, “how bad could it be?” And then you find out it’s even worse than you think. It’s seriously an overstatement to call them “roads,” unless you travel by covered wagon, I suppose.
4. You have an intense hatred of chiggers and are convinced you’ll pick some up by stepping one foot on a patch of grass.
In Kansas, you grow up hearing that everything is part of God’s creation. However, you know that chiggers must be part of the devil’s design. These things have no decency at all and get on some parts of you that are not polite to talk about in mixed company. They’re nothing but bad news.
5. You can deal with all types of weather.
There’s a saying in Kansas that if you don’t like the weather just wait five minutes. And it’s true. I remember one week where it was in the 80s one day and then snowed two days later. Or it’s not unusual for it to be in the 70s during the day and then drop down to the 40s overnight. Essentially, aside from four to six weeks of the year when it’s really nice out, there are two seasons: too freakin’ hot or too freakin’ cold. Kansans can deal with it.
6. You have spent time in a basement during a tornado.
Some Kansans like to pretend to be impervious to tornadoes and think of themselves as Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump, only instead of climbing to the top of a mast on a boat in the middle of a storm at sea, it’s running out into the middle of a field challenging a tornado to hit them with everything it’s got. The truth is, however, if there’s a tornado warning, you go to the basement with a portable radio, some water, a flashlight, and brace yourself for the worst until the storm’s over.
7. Your idea of a drinking fountain is a garden hose.
I suppose there are people from some parts of the world that would be shocked to see a person pick up a garden hose and start drinking out of it. But that’s just how it is in Kansas.
8. Children of the Corn scared the crap out of you.
This might not be the scariest movie that’s ever been made, but when you grow up across the road from a huge corn field, near a small town, and everyone you know goes to church, it’s pretty freakin’ scary. Every time you walk down the road, you expect some creepy kids to come walking out of the field. You just know they will.
9. You’re fanatically devoted to either KU basketball or K-State.
Not both. Let’s just put it this way: You don’t walk around in Lawrence wearing a K-State shirt, and you don’t walk around Manhattan in KU clothes. And, living here in Lawrence, I can tell you the Wildcats don’t stand a chance against the Jayhawks. They just don’t, and that’s just how it is. I think everybody knows that. Of course, they’ll tell it to you the other way around in Manhattan, and that’s just fine. Everybody ultimately supports whichever team makes it to the championship simply because they’re from Kansas.
10. You have mastered the art of being polite.
Kansans are polite to a fault. Except, perhaps, when it comes to college basketball.
Detroit Free Press- The world’s first combination IHOP and Applebee’s restaurant will happen next year in downtown Detroit. The 300-seat gastronomic experiment will be located inside the Millender Center, across from the Renaissance Center, and be oriented to serving guests in nearby hotels as well as downtown visitors, office workers and residents. Sources said Wednesday that the co-branded restaurant’s menu is still being developed, and it’s not yet known whether guests could order IHOP pancakes and omelets throughout the day, alongside plates of Applebee’s boneless wings and Fiesta Lime Chicken.

I’m hanging a flatscreen in the garage for when I’m smoking in the driveway. I’m also doing it to watch college football on. I’ve gotten used to spending half my fall Saturdays outside and 4 weeks of watching inside is starting to get to me. This seems very midwestern to me.we watched the game outside at my brothers house last week and played cornhole while we smoked down some miller lites.. midwestern AF
I’m also strongly considering putting a nice son-cone machine out there as well.

As much as I hate the word “hoodie”, I think midwesterner thrive in hoodie/shorts season. It’s also the start of crockpot & casserole season. Plus fall decorating & PTA/school sports socializing start back up hard & tailgating. By the end of summer we’re tired of the heat & we can finally get back out there so were happy. It’s the prime time of 75% of midwestern stereotypes.
I think my 4 year old is going to end up hitting 5 or 6 pumpkin patches in the next 3 weeks.

Where are there woodlands in Manhattan other than a narrow strip on scenic drive and they area between the zoo and Seth Childs. Are either of those places navigable? I worked at Wildcat Creek and if they were there it wasn't something anyone talked about.
there is a big system of trails along wildcat behind the zoo.
access it from the cemetery or the zoothere is a big system of trails along wildcat behind the zoo.

The smell of rain is one of life's great treasures and I won't let you wypipo take it for your own.Did you know that there is a word for the smell of rain falling on dry soil?
Day drinking and playing hip hop club bangers from our college/formative years.Does listening to The Cranberries while day drinking count?
Petrichor is the term coined by Australian scientists in 1964 to describe the unique, earthy smell associated with rain. It is caused by the water from the rain, along with certain compounds like ozone, geosmin, and plant oils.
The smell of rain is one of life's great treasures and I won't let you wypipo take it for your own.
It’s a different smell in different places. I’m not sure smelling the storm coming is even a Midwest thing, more of just a plains states thing. Even in Tulsa it’s nothing like the smell of the front coming out of the Rockies across the dry, flat land. In 14 years in Tulsa I’ve never felt the wind hit like someone turned on a fan like I did multiple times a year in central/west KS.
It’s more about being able say “I smell/feel the storm coming.”
I've lived a ton of places and I've never scenced a difference.
I've lived a ton of places and I've never scenced a difference.
I can tell a difference, but I can also feel the pressure difference in my sinuses. In Tulsa I can easily tell if a storm is one that came across the state from New Mexico/Texas vs one that’s coming up from the Gulf by how it smells and how my face & head feel before/during.
There’s also definitely a difference to me in smell between dry ground getting rained on and becoming wet soil and the smell of wet plants in a much greener area.

Everything on the menu is made from scratch to order, with the exception of certain children's menu items (Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, applesauce, and hot dogs). This includes the salads and dressings (the only dressings not made from scratch are low-fat ranch and oil and vinegar), sauces and side dishes. Each store employs its own baker and butcher/meat cutter. Their steaks are hand-cut (with the exception of the Porterhouse steaks, which are cut off-site and vacuum-packed) and are never frozen. Salmon is also cut off-site and vacuum packed

I've always thought Texas Roadhouse was the most overrated restaurant in the history of everything. I've never gotten a meal there and thought it was great. I'm surprised to read about them making everything from scratch, using butchers, and not freezing their meat. In light of this I'll give them another chance. My wife and kids love the place.

Went to that store with an Ex GF one time and got bored so I decided to look up the drummonds.
- She grew up on a country club in Bartlesville OK, she's not some big city gal who got swept off her feet by a country bumpkin.
- The Drummonds are rough ridin' loaded loaded, like 23rd largest land owner in the country loaded. Oil/Gas/Cattle
- They make SD's farm mafia look like a hobby farm. They have gotten 20+ million dollars over the past 10 years for keeping wild horses on their property.
They can spin a hell of a story though

My favorite thing about Pioneer Woman is that there is no sense in which she is a pioneer. If living in a place where there were once pioneers makes someone a pioneer, then guess what. Everyone is a pioneer.

SD, I hate to say this, but the Topeka Mall back in the '90"s had a Chick-fil-A and they gave out samples almost anytime I went thru the food court. Didn't have very many customers and it wasn't very popular.
I know it is cool to hate Chik-Fil-A now but I still enjoy the crap out of it.

What's the consensus here? Can confirm. Especially like getting them kicked off outside of the garage before they fall off the car and leave salty, sandy mush on the floor of my garage that gets tracked into the house until March 15th.

cottage cheese besides in Lasagna
cottage cheese besides in Lasagna
My wife did this once and I told her that if she did it again I'm leaving and taking the kids. I mean WTF. This is the ultimate food cultural appropriation. Go get some damn ricotta.

I always liked my wife’s lasagna. One day she didn’t have ricotta & tried cottage cheese. She didn’t tell me because she wanted to see if I’d notice. I thought it was terrible, but was nice & ate it without saying anything thinking I was just tired of lasagna. She forgot to tell me about the switch. For 2 years she’d ask if I wanted lasagna & I told her no I was tired of it. After 2 years she remembered about the cheese switch, told me about it, & no we are back to having good lasagna once a month.
has talking to strangers been mentioned?

WV is midwest I think. You are good here.
My dad is the king of making uncomfortable small talk with anyone he’s standing around or sitting byI'm sure this has been mentioned but the Midwest goodbye when you are leaving a grandparents/parents house and it takes 10 minutes and then the grandparents come outside to talk to you as you load up and to wave goodbye to you as you drive off and now I'm tearing up because my grandparents are gone and maybe they just wanted to see you a minute longer.

I learned this in college when we went to my buddy's lake house in the zarks and the closest town was Versailles. I pronounced it like the treaty of Versailles and he immediately told me I would get my ass kicked by some local yokels unless I pronounced it the correct way...Ver-Sails.
Yeah I instantly thought of the quirky hybrid "Vallejo". And yeah "Los Angeles"

Reminds me of something. My mom does this funny thing were she will use french pronunciations for english words. Like the Target is pronounced "TAR-zhay". One of many things I appreciate about my mom.Probably already discussed. Same goes for Spanish words.

That is the lamest video I've ever seen. I hate you for posting it.
This is probably specific to rural white Midwesterners but Rhubarb.
My dad transplanted one plant back to KC that had somehow survived out at the cat ranch for 20 years with no attention.
Just had some stalks tonight and they were damn tasty.
My maternal grandparents had rhubarb / rhubarb pie. Never liked it.This is probably specific to rural white Midwesterners but Rhubarb.

As a captive Garrison Keillor fan growing up, I regard this as specific to the upper, upper Midwest. As in the Lutheran communities of the fictional Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, and the factual places that inspired it. I never recall seeing rhubarb pie, or rhubarb in any other form, in Kansas. I'm sure it exists, but it wasn't really a "thing."
Had a great Aunt Hazel (name/shame?) from St. John that always brought gooseberry pie. Drowning in sugar. Kind of the same rhubarb midwest vibe.Could she trace the lineage of the gooseberries to an actual goose?
White, Midwestern, Kansas, Lutheran here... my grandmother makes rhubarb pie and strawberry rhubarb pie. I think it's ok. It's my mom's favorite. This is probably specific to rural white Midwesterners but Rhubarb.

strawberry rhubarb is a good combination. Rhubarb by itself isn't as great.
Just ruins perfectly good strawberry without masking the overpowering sourness of rhubarb.strawberry rhubarb is a good combination. Rhubarb by itself isn't as great.
I feel like it's just a way to get rid of rhubarb

Lamberts, there is one down by Branson and they walk around and ask if you want a roll then you have to catch it.
what happens if you drop the roll?
Interesting article. Also, lol at the idea of people who live east of the Mississippi considering themselves part of the Midwest (maybe in 1860).

Salina is the furthest west "Midwestern city" in Kansas. Everything west of there is part of the high plains/"west"Interesting article. Also, lol at the idea of people who live east of the Mississippi considering themselves part of the Midwest (maybe in 1860).

Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas are the most questionable inclusions. Most of the people in Kansas and Nebraska are in the Midwest, but most of the area within the state boundaries is in the high plains, which is completely different, and a lot closer to the western states.
Yard signswhoa.. I came here to post just that
arguing about who's in the midwest and who isn't.
the big decision is whether to follow natural geographic features or to treat states as unbreakable units.
the big decision is whether to follow natural geographic features or to treat states as unbreakable units.I used to be a believer in just adhering to state boundaries, but I have recently become convinced that the black hills, rapid city, etc are definitely in the West
Here is my attempt although the line I made should probably go a little higher into Indiana than I made it.What are yuppers in your map?

On both sides of the family, when everyone sits down at holidays, conversation among the menfolk invariably turns to our struggles against nature and wild animals - somebody deer hunting, calves potentially being preyed upon by coyotes, foxes bothering pets in town, not as many pheasants around as their used to be, and of course the fact that Ks Dept of Wildlife and Parks is concealing the truth about vast mountain lion populations existing in KS so that the public doesn’t panic. Would post in the holiday tradition thread but we have the exact same discussion on both sides of the family year after year and I assume it is pretty common.
LOL at the KDWP conspiracy. What's great about it is it makes no sense whatsoever!I read somewhere that the KDWP doesn't acknowledge any permanent population because if they did then they would have to make some sort of animal management plan for mountain lions and they just don't want the hassle.

crap that white mid-westerners gov't employees don't like is taking on extra projects at work . . . thus, you know why the KDWP views ML's as transitory only.

Talking about snow and the abundance or lack thereof.

absolute catnip for midwestern boomers is when school is closed on account of snow and they have the opportunity to lament how "this is nothin"

In February 2021 when Texas famously lost power, my colleagues in Delaware and New York were like, "Oh, heard you got a little dusting of snow, hur hur hur!" And I was like, "This is not funny. People are dying, and I've been displaced from my house so that I can charge my computer and work with you assholes."
Maybe they should invest in some instead of saw blade river bouys
