My dad passed another part of the Robert legend on to me. It sounds vaguely familiar but it should be recorded for posterity.

Yes I did get it, but, thanks for sending it just in case.   It is an interesting story for sure.
The first I ever saw him, I was I think a freshman a K-State and he was standing behind me at a basketball game.  I could tell he was a back-easterner and was a bit non-orthodox for sure.  I had no idea that he would become somewhat of an icon.
 ......
I read one story about him where he had gone to the Missouri basketball game, meeting the team as they got off the bus.  After the game,  he asked Jack Hartman if he could ride the bus back, as his car had broke down.  Jack told him to get to  the back of the bus and not cause any trouble.   Later,  Jack went back to ask Robert where his car had broken down, and Robert said, “Manhattan”.
Thanks again for sending it.  Quite a story.  Hope you had a great day.  .....

How?

I saw that and was mildly blown away as well. I mean he's the last person in the world outside of like bluegrass musicians who I would guess did not know that.

Yeah that is pretty damn surprising. To even have a passing K-State knowledge of why we even have the wabash cannonball should tip you off, let along be like "hmm let me type this is in and search "what is wabash cannonball"" is pretty ignorant, boarding on complete intellectual incuriousness

My first job out of college was actually the year that I graduated. I was a lead teacher at the old K-State Child Development Center at Jardine. Ironically enough, DSF's daughter was in my class, she was one of my faves. Anyway, we had a nap time CD and one of the songs was some dude, not Johnny Cash, singing the Wabash Cannonball. That was my introduction to that song not being a K-State and UT band song.

Have none of you seen I love Lucy? One episode some huge country singer played the Wabash Cannonball on guitar and sang the whole song. He was playing the part of Lucy's cousin or something.

my very first k-state game when The Pride of Wildcat Land started playing the wabash cannonball i was like "oh crap! that's that song from that episode of i love lucy where that one country singer played the whole song, i think he was her cousin or something?" iconic.

I think students singing the words while the band played was a thing for a while. I never knew the words, but have memories of hearing "the rumble and the roar."

I am not entirely familiar with the program, but I know she was a total badass and was like actually I'm going to get paid af for my work and get and Desi made money hand over fist bc they weren't beholden to studio overlords or something to that effect. Pretty cool.

There's a great documentary on her career. She was indeed a badass.

Yes, I grew up on ILL reruns with my parents and grandparents along with plenty of other TV classics.
