Title: camping/tent stuff question
Post by: Dr Rick Daris on April 25, 2013, 02:47:00 PM
i'm not a big outdoorsy camping guy but want to go once or twice this year just for a night or whatever. four people at most in the tent. this thing looks like it should be fine and easy to set up or whatever. will it be fine? is it junk? get something better? worse?

You can get the "elk cabin" at the ozarks for $50 a night. It has two lofts for sleeping (you climb a ladder to get to it  :D), TV with cable, and a kitchen. My bro and I felt like kings; and we had our own lofts for the fillies we met at the bars. I think i'm done with tents now. Cabins all the way.

However many people the tent says it can hold, divide that by 2 unless you like to sleep on top of each other.

Looks fine to me.  Tents are very uncomplicated things.  Some can be a PIA to set up, but that one looks okay.

You could do better, but since it doesn't sound like you will be camping more than once or twice a year, that tent looks like it should be just fine rick daris.

Source: I'm not a "tent expert" per say, but I've been camping quite a few times in my life and that tent looks just as quality as any other I've used. Coleman usually makes a good product; inexpensive but quality.  For your purposes, that tent should be just fine.

oh my god you guys, look at this one! nothing probably says "hey, i'm an expert camper and wilderness guy" like this Northwest Territory  Big Sky Lodge Tent - 16' x 11'. i buy that thing and show up to the lake and people will obviously know i'm not messing around w/ them and that i'm hardcore expert level.

I took my ex two years ago to beaver lake in NW Arkansas. We were there for four nights. First two nights we tented out next to some hillbillies revving up their engines at night and being super loud. I got pissed ( :shakesfist:), super PAK'd, and started to yell at them. The filly didn't like that and demanded we head to Eureka the next two nights and stay at a cabin there. Those two nights were peaceful and lot more enjoyable ( :fatty:). You really need to luck out on your neighbors when camping out.

Fair warning, alcoholic beverages are "prohibited" at pott2.  Don't know how rebellious you're feeling, but it's something to be aware of.  I'm not sure about tuttle but I think you can binge there no worries

Exact reason I don't go on those.  Sleep on ground is one thing.  doing so in 90deg weather and some ridic humidity is another.  Pfft.

also not a camping fan, and i also did not grow up on a cow farm.  in fact i would have had to travel at least 30 minutes to find a cow farm (i think, i don't know where any cow farms are).

a/c and mattresses were invented for a reason.

Does eating berries you found and wiping your ass with leaves qualify?  Seems like it would make the experience even less enjoyable, which always struck me as sort of the point of camping.  "That's not real camping son, you gotta punch yourself in your own face while you do it and then we can talk. It ain't camping if'n it ain't awful is what my daddy always used to say."

pott2 has a warden that lives out there, and on weekends you can be certain he'll come around the lake at dusk and check in on everyone, looking for prohibitied malt beverages.  The good news is everytime i've seen the gentleman hes just told us "You know Kansas ordnance bla bla bla bans the consumption of alcohol in state parks bla bla bla" but then just asks to make sure we clean up after ourselves and goes on his way.

you don't need a tent, they're useless.  get a cot and a good pad.  don't camp anywhere humid.  that's it, that's all you need to know.

Asava, would you qualify that if you drove to it, it isn't really camping?

thats definitely where i draw the line. otherwise it's just partying in a nature setting. or big n' rich camping.
this might be the dumbest thing I've ever read on this site. and this is a site full of dumbasses

i would also say that if you aren't hiking at least 20 miles during your trip then its probably not camping.

Sounds more like hiking.

Sent from my KFTT using Tapatalk 2

hiking is generally a part of camping if you aren't being pud.

i don't think ive ever encountered such smugness about camping, my word.

Yeah, and he's just wrong. Let's say you decide to canoe down the grand canyon and set up camp. You aren't hiking; you're floating. I think even asava would still say you are camping, though.

That dad is an bad person and has no idea what real camping is.  Real camping is stealing a real rough ridin' Gorilla from the zoo, giving it some form of rabies, and setting it loose in the middle of camp for real then having to knife fight it to the end for survival.

If you hike then set up a camp not near your car, i believe that would be termed 'backpacking'
I camped/lived in a tent for nearly an entire summer while working on my MS at KSU...I know a thing or two about camping.

Regarding a tent, if you are only going to go 1-2x/yr and do the park and empty your ride type camping then a cheap one would be fine.  Try to find one that will be easy to set up and never think it will sleep as many as it says.

i would be camping w/ three other humans most of the time so four total. i don't know that i need an 8 person one but i mean if i'm going 6 then why not just go 8 kind of thing. are there drawbacks to biggers ones. i mean idk, but more room sounds nice.

The bigger tents, usually 8+ have options for a window mounted air conditioner in case you get too warm.  They're great if you just want to lay under the stars and watch some Big Bang Theory on your ipad.

I get it. But it seems like 8-person is kind of a tipping point. It's either crap quality or a $1,000 Everest Base Camp job. So, you can get a 6-man tent from a reputable manufacturer at a reasonable price that will last a decade, or a slightly-bigger, way-heavier Coleman (sorry, Wichita) that you'll most likely have to replace in six to 24 months.

Tell the kids to keep their stuff put up and you'll have plenty of room in a 6-man tent to play cards while it's raining.

Two four-man tents would be a great option for space/solitude.

sleeping in tents on the ground is one of the stupidest things a human can do.  buy everyone a cot.  sleep on the cot.  it's about 9 million times better.  unless it's raining or there are tons of mosquitos sleep in the open air.  for rain have a tarp that you can cover yourself with.  for mosquitos either stop camping or buy some mosquito netting or something, i dunno.  mosquitoes suck.

why not just sleep in your bed at home and just like, open the windows or something (obviously keep the ac on so it doesn't get sweaty hot)

sometimes you aren't close to your house when you want to sleep.

Never used one, dunno. Might not be terribly practical in a lot places in KS. Much more packable than a cot, though.

I like a place to change in privacy when around others, and my air mattresses are plenty comfortable.

Hey guys, just wanted to worn you about the tics out there this season. We did a 10 mile hike saturday just 20 miles south of fayatteville and I found two of these critters on me. One had his fangs torched into my leg (where the arm pit area would be for the leg. Right underneath my knee) and the other one was headed for the boys before I snagged him. I'm a little woozy today. I'm pretty sure it's a mixture of lime green and a hangover. Best of luck!

hammocks are fine for lounging around for an hour or so.  they can make a nice chair thing if you want that.  they suck for sleeping.  to sleep, you need a cot.  i'm assuming car camping, so practicality is fine.

why would there be so many other people around?  open a car door if you're modest.

They make tents big enough for cots.  We have one like the one on the left.

Sleeps 3 men on cots just fine. We also put a Buddy Heater in it when it's really cold.  It'll hold the inside temp at 40 degrees above ambient temp even in high winds.

I've done some long hikes and stuff and I've gone 5 days. Up to 3 days is rough, but after 4 it gets easier. You get into the groove. This was when it was like 40 degrees out though. I can't imagine how bad it would be in some rough heat with no showers.

5 days in yellowstone twice with a small group. There were restrooms most of the time, but a pain to get to. It was a nice balance between abandoned and accessible to necessities. I've spent 4-5 days in the mountains here in CO. 2 other people. No restrooms. No ice. Very liberating. Not something I'd want to do every day.

One summer, I spent over 90 nights in a tent (with a cot), with a few trips to civilization/indoor beds sprinkled in.

I've done a few 10-day (9 night?) backcountry trips (no cot).

If you can't get a cot, bring an inflatable pool bed thingy. It's like $4 and easy to pack.

Sage advice, in a pinch.

But don't let your terrible night's sleep tarnish your notions of what a real air mattress can provide.

Absolutely. I can't see the pool thingy lasting more than a night or two. Air mattress or cot all the way for more than a couple nights.

I have Big Agnes air mattress right now, which is super comfortable, pretty easy to blow up even after a day of backpacking (but I would spring for self inflating if I was still doing this a lot) and folds up to the size of a Nalgene bottle.

It's great, but I wish I had known about this one before I bought it:

http://www.klymit.com/index.php/products-1/sleeping-pads/static-v.html (http://www.klymit.com/index.php/products-1/sleeping-pads/static-v.html)

Would love to have this chamber pattern, so you don't slip around.

They don't get a whole lot cheaper than $60, but there are always end-of-year sales, Sierra Trading Post, Steep and Cheap, The Clymb, etc.

Actually this sounds like a hell of deal (half the price of original recommendation as requested) and has great reviews, and Sierra Trading Post has 35% off promo codes on the reg.

Totally acceptable.

For car camping/cuddling, I bought this: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/alps-mountaineering-air-bed-queen-rechargeable-pump~p~4195f/?filterString=sleeping-pads~d~210%2F  (http://www.sierratradingpost.com/alps-mountaineering-air-bed-queen-rechargeable-pump~p~4195f/?filterString=sleeping-pads~d~210%2F) S'ok, I dunno. Rechargeable battery lasts forever. Seems to hold air reasonably well, but it will still be relatively soft in the morning.

eELL- are you a geo major/MS student?  I did a similar 3 month stint in the woods (no cot) with a few nights in a bed mixed in.  The campground had no ice, but did have potable water and vault toilets.  I went to nearby hot springs to wash up on occasion.

Back to the point-a self inflating mattress is a necessity to sleep well in a tent.  Last summer 176 and I camped in a National Park (fairly primitive digs) and we brought a queen blowup mattress-it was great.  For backpacking tho, can't go wrong with a simple 3/4 length self inflating one (thermarest).

Nope, journo major.

Spent a summer building/repairing trail at Philmont in New Mexico. Had pretty much all the same aforementioned amenities, and somewhat regular access to (cold) showers.

In what mosquito-free areas are you pitching your cot?

most of western north america.  the midwest sucks for outdoor sleeping (too humid).

i've hardly ever camped in state or natl parks.  don't see the point in paying to sleep next to strangers outdoors.  for us-based recreation, blm or fs dispersed.  or wherever i can find an seemingly empty spot if it's just a place to crash.

I mean there I was fishing trickles for pickles and the sun went behind the canyon wall and out they came.  Very vampire like.  It was out in the middle of nowhere so it's not like a park ranger could have warned me.  I'm packing a farmer's almanac next time.  I bet they have a mosquito section.

Wise decision. In addition to stews and chilli, dutch ovens are great for baking biscuits, cobblers, cinnamon rolls, etc.

But, I would recommend one with a rimmed lid. So you can put charcoal briquettes on top, for even heat and crispy cobblers. (You can even use the lid as a griddle)

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fg-ecx.images-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FG%2F01%2Fkitchen%2Faplusdiy%2FB00008GKDW%2FCampDutchOvenCoals.jpg&hash=ffd829ceb099fc5e8bc8daf653ebd704963e1116)

Maybe one of these:

Smaller version:

Or there's the Texsport that I recommended a couple of pages ago for even cheaper.
http://www.amazon.com/Texsport-Pre-Seasoned-Cast-Iron-Dutch/dp/B004H10HCY/ref=sr_1_10?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1399329872&sr=1-10&keywords=texsport+dutch+oven (http://www.amazon.com/Texsport-Pre-Seasoned-Cast-Iron-Dutch/dp/B004H10HCY/ref=sr_1_10?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1399329872&sr=1-10&keywords=texsport+dutch+oven)
Nevermind, get the Lodge.

My neighbor just got one of these. I can't decide if I think it's really cool or not. I don't think it would be worthwhile for me unless I planned to spend at least a month or two on the road. Also not sure I see much benefit in the collapsibility feature. Just seems like a pain in the ass.

I've been wanting one of these:  http://www.autohomeus.com/roof-top-tent/

You could get down some nasty roads, actually turn around.  The trailer pull thing is for people who don't really want to be outside.

I just got a small RV for my family.  This is new for us and I'm excited & nervous.  I would love any tips or ideas from fellow local RVers.  I think our first weekend or two will be somewhere local.  I'm sure we'll learn a lot then.

parked on a residential street outside your children or grandchildren's house in fresno seems like a popular option, but i dunno.

gonna be honest. no one in this thread has mentioned anything that qualifies as actual camping.

  We need bread back.

That lil RV looks great. It's amazing how expensive even the little guys are  :sdeek:

My friends and I did a ton of camping last summer (typical covid move) and it was quite a lot of fun. Mostly local stuff around the KC area (Jocomo, Hillsdale, Clinton) and a time out a Tuttle, but still, was good to get out. We all used tents, which wasn't too bad. We just got sites in the RV areas and partied it up, Days we went out to lots of Kansas history sites (like Osawatomie, Lecompton) and the like. Was fun, we hope to push further into KS like Council Grove, Kanopolis, etc.

Cross post from the farm thread but this beautiful masterpiece from meade kansas has been sitting in a barn on our farm without use for about 30 years.

My dad has been talking about buying a full bed pickup to haul it around since I was a kid but has yet to pull the trigger.

recommend the most comfortable air/tent mattress thing you can think of along with one that is not as good but costs half as much.

Actually this sounds like a hell of deal (half the price of original recommendation as requested) and has great reviews, and Sierra Trading Post has 35% off promo codes on the reg.

i have a couple of twin sized air mattresses in my basement that i never use. maybe strap one to my sled and then take it out and load it up in the tent. thoughts? will park rangers cuss me out or other campers make fun of me though? that worries me.

Totally acceptable.

For car camping/cuddling, I bought this: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/alps-mountaineering-air-bed-queen-rechargeable-pump~p~4195f/?filterString=sleeping-pads~d~210%2F  (http://www.sierratradingpost.com/alps-mountaineering-air-bed-queen-rechargeable-pump~p~4195f/?filterString=sleeping-pads~d~210%2F) S'ok, I dunno. Rechargeable battery lasts forever. Seems to hold air reasonably well, but it will still be relatively soft in the morning.
