Title: Computer thread
Post by: The Big Train on March 30, 2013, 09:43:37 PM
So after my computer has frozen like 15 times just trying to play a youtube video tonight, I think it's time I upgrade and get a new one.  It's a Dell laptop and I have had it for about 4 years, I know a lot of people with Imac's but have never owned one.  What does everyone recommend as far as a work/personal computer?  Looking on the laptop side as I travel alot for work.

:dubious: Never owned an Apple computer.  Just looking for some suggestions/past experiences with different computers.

Dell computers have never let me down. I only buy a new one when one becomes obsolete.

Yeah, I had another Dell laptop before this one but it got stolen but it was great before that.  I am not savy as far as hardware goes, is there anything I should avoid as far as processors or video cards?

Before my current laptop, i used a Dell and really liked it.  However i don't think their prices are very competitive anymore.  I use a Lenovo brand laptop (ideapad) and really like it, great value for the money and works great.

Base hardware is so commoditized these i wouldn't say there are really any "don't buy/buys" out there... pay more, get more, pay less get less.  Unless you can find one on markdown.  Everyday Gizmodo aggregates a whole bunch of clearance deals on tech stuff from around the internet, when i bought my current laptop, i just found this post from everyday for like the last week and looked through the laptops they have listed and selected from that group, think i payed $600 for a laptop regularly listed for $1k or so

I follow Gizmodo on twitter so I will look out for this, youtube has frozen at least 12 more times since I started this thread so it's time.  This current computer may end up on the back deck or in the bottom of the pool at this rate by the end of the night  :curse:

I agree, Dell has become less competitive price-wise, but I'll pay extra to get a product I trust. That said, I have also heard good things about Lenovo. In fact, my go-to IT guy tried pretty hard to sell me one the other day, even though I wasn't in the market for a new computer.

Build your own computer.  As long as you can follow directions and have a better understanding of technology than an octogenarian, it's pretty simple.  You can get something more powerful than a prebuilt for a fraction of the price and it won't come pre-loaded with a bunch of garbage programs.

Yes it is.  If all you want is a laptop for work/school the difference won't be huge, but it is most definitely true if you want a high end PC.  I spent $1000 on parts and built something that would cost $4000 if you bought it premade from Dell.  Even if you don't need something that powerful, a $400 custom built computer is going to be better than a $400 premade computer.

It is more difficult than building a desktop, but it's not terribly hard.  However, if you want a laptop and don't have some experience building computers, you should get a premade.

That post had nothing to do with the OP, it was refuting you saying that it isn't more cost-effective to build your own computer.

If all you need is something basic and you don't know how to build a computer, buying a premade is probably a better choice.  But still, if all you need is something basic and you want to learn how to build one, you're going to get something better that will last longer for the same price.  You can pay $400 for a premade where half the cost is labor and half the cost is overpriced parts, or you can buy $400 worth of reasonably priced parts from newegg.com and spend a couple hours putting them together.

ya, it runs great.  also, my point was that while a tablet to play temple run oz on may be the extent of your gaming needs, the reality is that the shelf life of a tablet game is very short lived.  tablets are acceptable for tablet games, that's it.  the world of games extends far beyond what a tablet can offer.

it's really odd you can't understand that.  maybe you're a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

You seriously think the common user that can't get Youtube to work on their current laptop should be building their own laptop? The market for barebones laptop parts is pretty much nonexistent. Your options are extremely slim. MSI and... If you're going the route of getting one where you have to install the processor, graphics, wireless, etc. then it's an even crazier suggestion.

OP needs to stick to buying a name brand laptop with warranty. If you seriously consider a Macbook you might try to get your current laptop to last as long as possible. Rumors flying about when the new iPad/Macbook's will be released this year. New Mac's should have the Haswell chip. Might as well wait for those if you're buying this year.

Thinking of upgrading my desktop which I basically just use as a file server and picture editing now.  Here are the options I'm kicking around

- Upgrade memory and HDDs of this one (boring and for poors)
- Get new Windows based desktop and possibly a NAS
- Move into a Mac desktop and NAS
- Go Macbook Air and NAS

Already have one laptop (Windows) and the point of the NAS is obviously to share pics/music/files across all devices including smart tv / xbox / etc.  Leaning towards Macbook Air given I need a good way to edit pictures and videos and the desktop I use now for that is a dog.  Concern with going Mac is sharing the edited files to all other devices and I've never had a Mac but look super neato.

Which one should I go with?  Or is there a better option all together?

I made my old desktop into basically a storage device. I download everything to it. Stream everything from it. Very easy to do with Windows. No idea how it interfaces with Macs. Shouldn't an issue, I'd guess. Homegroups in Windows makes things very easy though.

I haven't had the best of luck consistently getting it to work but I haven't tried very hard.  I could turn the desktop into a storage device but thinking would rather go with something smaller like a NAS.

Yeah, I have one on it.  My macbook is from 2008-2009 and is starting to slow down anyway and I still need a personal computer.  Also, the software I need to run doesn't cooperate well when Ive tested it.  I need my major software to run flawlessly and also have one or two bigger screens.  I understand you can probably get external monitor(s) for a laptop but with all these issues I just figured I'd invest in a new PC desktop.

my suggestion is always to look through the last few days of posts in http://gizmodo.com/tag/dealzmodo (http://gizmodo.com/tag/dealzmodo) or just monitor it for a few days (one post a day at 2pm CST)  they always have good rigs setup

We need a new laptop, not a desktop, I want to be able to move about my house computing.  Not interested in apple products; we BBS, interweb, and edit photos.

I think this should be accomplished for less than $700, give me some options and/or computers to steer clear of.  If it matters we just bought a 2TB external hard drive.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

Only use SSD's for your OS and data that is not read/write intensive. They have limited life and usually last less than 3 years if you use them for read/write.

My suggestion for your new rig: Get a small SSD for your OS and Applications and a HDD for your data such as music, movies, documents, etc...

That's just not true. Also, your suggestion contradicts your previous sentence because while it is smart to install the OS on an SSD, it will incur far more writes than a secondary drive. Reads have no measurable impact on drive life.

You want the OS on a SSD because it's primarily read cycles instead write cycles. Life expectancy is far lower for SSD's than HDD's. I've got a pile of them in my office to prove it.

I know the benefits of an SSD. But unless you are hosting a webserver your 3 year claim is complete bullshit. That or you bought a lot of SSDs with sandforce controllers, which are crap and just unreliable. But that has nothing to do with wear on the NAND.

The read/write cycle degradation  of SSD is something thats becoming less and less of an issue with newer models... spend a little more on a nicer quality drive if you're very worried about it.

That's kind of the opposite of reality. As the manufacturing process of the NAND gets smaller and companies push to create cheaper SSDs the number of write cycles the NAND can survive gets smaller.

After going full SSD for a while, i've settled on doing a small 60GB or so drive for my OS and various applications and an array of HDD's for the rest. My server is set up in an array of HDD's also. To each their own though!

yeah the write cycle thing was a concern in the beginning, but is an absolute non-issue with today's ssds

I could tell my hard drive was about to die (made a lot of clicking noises, randomly crashed, etc.) so I bought an SSD to replace it.  the SSD is basically just a lot faster since it has no moving parts, all flash memory.  so my iMac now starts up in like 8 seconds and applications open super fast.  video rendering was also a shitload faster when I made the #SWP video.

I do make sure to keep a backup on a time machine running a normal hard drive because the SSDs are prone to weird crashes and stuff so it's a good idea to make sure you have a regular backup handy.  the normal hard drives are still more reliable than SSDs.

fair warning, opening up the iMac and getting access to the hard drive is kind of a pain in the ass.  not too bad though, anyone of above average intelligence can do it.

It won't fix this. The heat from a laptop HD is negligible. The heat you are feeling is from the cpu/gpu.

my mb pro has 2 thunderbolt and 2 usb 3.0 ports, but i'm assuming that the 7200 rpm hdd transfer speeds won't be fast enough to exceed the usb 3.0, right?

any recommendos on external hdd enclosures?

Maybe I'm not the one to tell you about computers, since previous posts you have expressed your extreme computer savvy.

REGARDLESS.  The hard drive RPM have nothing to do with the transfer speeds, its a difference between local and network speeds, but I digress.

The only issue when it comes to enclosures is if the imac(depending on the model) is a 2.5" or 3.5" HD size.

Real question for the computer nerds here: I run a piece of technical software (acoustic measurements) on an old mini-pc that runs on Windows XP. The software/hardware manufacturer is not upgrading the software or hardware. It is where it is. As you know, XP is no longer supported.

Can I keep the mini-pc from trying to update automatically by disabling the Wifi and just operate in "1950's Windows XP" technology indefinitely?  Seems to be working so far.

Have I invented time travel?

so i have a 2008 imac that the vgu died on about a year ago.  the guy said it would cost more to fix than it would be worth.  since then, it's been sitting on the side of my desk.  a couple weeks ago i took out the old hard drive from it and put it back together, now it's back sitting on the side of my desk.

what am i supposed to do with this thing aside from finding an electronic recycling dump

This guy will take old computers (preferrably laptops) and refurbish them for underprivileged kids.

CompuCats.. I'm looking at adding another PC to my office and would like the best bang for the buck.  It would be primarily used for running my office software which is not very intensive.  Doesn't need to many bells and whistles.  Prefer giant screen.

1) doesn't have a ton of bullshit apps launch on start-up

Have you tried building your own computer so that it doesn't have all of those things?  I recently built this one out of some western red cedar I had lying around after finishing my deck this summer.  It's purely decorative but the screen is a chalkboard so you can draw on it to look like a favorite website.  And obviously no trouble with pop-ups.

Loaded non-touch XPS 15.  I couldn't justify spending another $1000 for MacOS and the  touchbar.

I tried them out at Best Buy and they are cool but after a lot of research couldn't pull the trigger.

To get even to the same specs as what I bought would be another $700 on the non touchbar mbp.  A lot of what I do can only be run on Windows, so I run VM's on my current mac.

When I do that I'm already partitioning the computer in half.  So it really doesn't make much sense to spend $700 more just to cut the machine in half.

Trust me I wanted to get one because I love the mac I already have.  From a logical sense tho it didn't make sense at all.

Acts a bit like a docking station, in case you don't actually need a real docking station. Can plug in a keyboard and mouse, or whatever else you want, and still grab your laptop and go with ease. If you have 5.1 speakers, as I do, then you'll still need to use some type of docking station.

on my 8 core xeon when it is under full load, the cpu cooler fans spin at 6000 rpm and it sounds like an airplane taking off. and it barely keeps it under 100 degrees celsius.

why is it that decent looking coolers like this: https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-heatpipe-NF-A15-140mm/dp/B00L7UZMAK are under 2000 rpm?

is it super efficient, and my stock cooler is trash?

Quick Q. I am looking to get a laptop for work/school. I was browsing around Best Buy and seeing the things to see. I noticed the hard drive on the Apple products was significantly less than that of what I could get on a pc. Like 256 and 512 gb compared to 1TB etc.

Why is this? What does it all mean? I'm just humoring myself that I could be a cool Apple kid and will probably settle on a Samsung/Lenovo/Asus.

Why are they so small for Apple? Is the OS just so much smaller?

All Apple computers have solid state drives(SSD).  They are much faster than traditional hard drives(HD) and therefore are more expensive.  The non-Apple computers you were looking at that had more drive capacity probably had traditional HD’s.

Just some advice but go to Best Buy/Nub Furniture Mart etc to test stuff out and find what you want.  But buy directly from the manufacturer tho.  So Apple/Dell/Toshiba/Asus etc otherwise you will probably get even more bloatware than the manufacturer puts on it.

I have this at work and it’s ok, but I’ve read a lot of reviews that the thunderbolt cable wears out.

My current setup at home is just an additional monitor for my personal laptop but I have 3 monitors I could use. Probably gonna go with this, the reviews are pretty good.

One of my employees was having wrist issues and we have like ergonomics consultants that work for us and they came out and like watched him sit and work and then changed the height of his desk (our desks are all upppy downys) and then got him one of those mice that you hold like you’re holding a drink. Looked incred weird but he said he loved it.

ya most non-hayseedy companies treat ergonomic concerns pretty seriously to avoid osha and other lawsuits and also paying out disability insurance

because i am built like a greek god, the ergonomic people usually have to come raise the height of my desk too.  usually afterwards a bunch of hot chicks stop by and ask to take pictures with me and for my autograph.  its v cool

@DaBigTrain or any other computer nerds. I think I need to put my once decent router out to pasture. Either that, or write letters to Disney bitching about the ESPN+ feed being inherently slow.

I believe a budget of $200 is realistic to get me what I need. I have a ton of connected devices, and there's likely quite a bit of signal interference here.

What's the play?

Not sure what you have for hardware at your house but this article should help. There’s basically two routes you could go for what you asked. The first is just buying a router that has a VPN server built into it. The second would be to create a VPN server at your house but that way requires a lot more networking and hardware requirements. Hope this article points you in the right direction.

It was time for a refresh of my home office stuff since I've had the same setup for a few years.

I got 3 of these and they came today, highly recommend.

Also got I think my third generation of this laptop/mouse combo, I absolutely love them and have one for work today.

anybody know anything about overclocking? from what i can tell, it's pushing it past ghz, so like getting 4.8 out of 4.5. but if it gets too hot, like 100 celsius, it starts to throttle down to like 4.2 or even lower. so the whole goal is to cool it a crap ton so it can stay under 100 celsius, so that it can hit 4.8 for as long as i want? also something about having enough voltage for it to hit 4.8.

also i rented a server with the processor i am considering, and under full load it shoots up from 60 to 100 celsius pretty much immediately. which is worrisome but i'm guessing they just have crap cooling?

My kid wants a gaming PC for her birthday this month. What’s the cheapest PC I can get that will still work for online gaming. I don’t want to spend a small fortune only for her to lose interest in a few weeks.

If it helps, the games she wants to play are:

minecraft
fortnite
gta
call of duty
roblox
genshin impact
fnaf

little misfortune
what happened to edith finch

Check the softwares' hardware requirement info. I'd bet that the cheapest new computer you can find will exceed them by a lot. Something that looks like a cool gaming computer would probably be my biggest concern.

So, I got my inlaws a new Mac at Costco a couple years back. I set it up for them and noticed it was running pretty slow initially. I just figured it was loading all of their crap and it was just going to take a bit. Anywho, they have periodically mentioned the slowness over the years and i've done some crap to it to clean it up. I finally told them to bring it to me and its weird, it is just slow as crap. My Mac is like 5 years older and way faster. I did everything I could after some googling and its still just slow. Took it to Apple this weekend finally and they were like, what the hell? They ran several tests and everything checks out. They said the only thing to do is some factory wipe and manual reinstall of the OS. I get it back here in a bit and am hoping for the best so I don't have to deal with it anymore, but it is really odd no one can figure out why it is so slow and I'm not optimistic that it will be fixed. I do feel bad I didn't do this sooner when I could have taken it back to Costco.
