Title: oscar Weber: One of the Best
Post by: hatingfrancisco on December 06, 2017, 10:14:08 AM
He needs 10 more wins this year to move into 4th place all-time for wins at K-State ahead of Frank Martin.  :driving:

I say he get's win #118 at home against KU on Big Monday.  :bball:

*edited* 4th place all time.  But still a great achievement!

Why settle for 4th when 1st is available? (probably a oscar motto)

We know oscar is here for the foreseeable future.  No reason he can't sit atop that mountain.

Not a fair comparison for oscar.  Frank padded his stats with a bunch of tournament wins.

"Why settle for 4th when you don't know how many people/teams are competing for those spots and if you consider there might be at least 6, maybe 8 people/teams going for it 4th place puts you in the top half and is respectable and if a few things go right and the ball bounces your way a few times 3rd might even be available." (probably a oscar motto)

Q: Do you have an impression of Coach Weber?

A: Yeah. (Laugh) Whenever I’m on the court, whether the play has to deal with me or not, he’s like, “KAAAAAAMMM! KAAAAAAMMM!” Then I turn around to answer, say, “What?” And he doesn’t say anything sometimes. But then sometimes he’ll tell me to tell other players to do this - he could have called their names, too! But I know where he’s coming from - I’m the point guard, the leader, so he wants me to be that coach on the floor.

Just a thought.  Maybe Frank gave Willie Catland such a bad connotation in the eyes of parents due to his cussing and hellion hollering the BWeb could not recruit anything but crap.  Now the last 3 years he has gotten solid recruits.   We are on the way up.  After the 3 juniors gradgeeate, then it may be ugly.

We have a good chance to be good this year and next.
Then what.... no great recruits in the pipeline.
In two years. ..... realism.  Enjoy the ride given to us by Claws, Flush, Deathbite, and Sneed.
Blame Weed Foster for Weber's eventual demise.

The only time I've ever even heard the hockey pass/assist associated to basketball was one of my favorite K-State Basketball plays OAT where Denis over the back'd it to McGruder to Pullen to Kelly for the DOB.

Even more, the native of Kansas City, Missouri, said he first became interested in playing at K-State from watching his older brother face the Wildcats in 2015. The Wildcats topped the Bears, ranked No. 22 at the time, by two in Bramlage Coliseum, and Wainright liked what he saw.

That’s when I really started looking at K-State and thinking, ‘I like how they play. I like how Coach (oscar) Weber coaches.’ He lets the guards and his players play. He pushes them on defense. So I started looking at that, like, ‘I want to be a part of that,’” Wainright said. “Eventually I ended up being a part of it.”

So I have come to the conclusion that all of the Big XII coaches with the exception of Self have colluded to allow Weber to win just enough games to keep his job, thus ensuring that Kstate is never a viable threat in the conference.  Self will only fall on the sword when it doesn't jeopardize a confy championship or if it looks like Weber may really be in trouble

Sometime in late Dec 2019 oscar Weber will become the third winningest coach in KSU hoops.

In 2024 oscar will set behind only Jack Hartman.

When he retires in 2026, oscar Weber will walk off of oscar Weber Family Court for the last time as the greatest coach in KSU hoops history.

What is oscar's conference winning percentage compared to Frank?

Frank was 50-32 .610
oscar is 51-50 .501

Frank did get the luxury of playing Nebraska, Colorado, and Wayne Morgan's/McNeck's ISU teams 6 of 16 games a year. oscar's schedule is probably good for 2 games a year tougher than what Frank had but he also gets two more chances to pick up wins. All things considered, oscar's results are a lot closer to Frank's than any of us are comfortable with.

Also not sure where chingon is getting his numbers

Frank in conference was
10-6
9-7
11-5
10-6
10-8
That's 50 wins
oscar is
14-4
10-8
8-8
5-13
8-10
6-5
That's 51 wins

08-09: 4th out of 12
09-10: 2nd out of 12
10-11: 4th out of 12
11-12: 5th out of 10

12-13: 2nd out of 10
13-14: 5th out of 10
14-15: 8th out of 10 (w)
15-16: 8th out of 10 (w)
16-17: 6th out of 10

that, along with the ncaa tournament record, has to hurt the oscar agendites

It's hard to believe until you realize that there were two years where he didn't even have a team in the tournament. You can't expect him to win when he doesn't even get a chance.

oscar has 12 wins.

He asserts that Currie's personal issues led KSU to now having a worse coach than Frank.  Currie says he disagrees.  CPA says that obviously Frank is a better coach than Weber.  Currie tells him he's wrong.

I leap past CPA and ask Currie if it's his position that Weber's a better coach than Frank.  Currie says he's not going to talk to me with me coming at him with that tone.  WTF?  I ask him again, more calmly or whatever and he says that Weber has 200+ wins (he had the exact number).  I say, no crap, he's been coaching for a decade longer.

Well since people are completely disregarding the NCAA when considering tournament wins, I'm going to use the same logic. When myself, and frankly most people reading this board, started watching the NCAA tournament it had 45 teams. Since of course any games won before a divisor of 16 don't count then any game won before the round of 32 is completely fake.

For some reason there's a segment of sports fans, not just K-State fans, who act like 64 is some sacred number although for any gen Xer the tournament has been something other than that more than it has, and it was 64 for only a very small number of years of the tournament's existence. And guess what? It's going to increase again when this TV deal is over.

I think you're kidding, hoping? But to drive this point home even more, there is literally no one alive on the planet, not a single person, who has spent a majority of their life with a 64 team tournament. The tournament was 64 teams for only 15 years, 1985-2000. The tournament hasn't been 64 teams for 18 years yet we're STILL hearing 68 team hottakes from disgruntled Anti-Brucers, sports talk morning zoo hosts, and sports fans who only watch college basketball for 4 weeks.

There is nothing more old ballzy than pining for something that was left in the 20th century. AOL, pogs, and teletubbies were things since the 64 team tournament went away.

The difference is that the most of the teams don’t have a first round game. Either everyone not playing in it should be credited with a win vs bye, or those who win the game should be treated like they won a play-in game to reach the real tournament. Otherwise you credit coaches for winning a matchup against an equally crappy team while other coaches who actually had better seasons have to play a much better team than theirs in their first round. People would give first round wins more weight if the tournament had a field of 128.

The ncaa tournament is popular b/c of brackets and rough ridin' off at work/school, and everyone's bracket always has been and always will be a 64-team bracket. That, and that the first round is called the FIRST round, reinforces why people only consider THE tournament as the thing that america cares about that starts on a thursday.

I think they stopped calling it the first round recently.  If you’re talking tournament wins, I think MIR is right you gotta count play-in/first four just like you would count wildcard games in any other postseason. It’s a good point that if we want to be critical of NCAA adding those games, why stop there since the field has expanded so much to dilute the meaning of a tournament win over the years?

With that out of the way, it’s a pretty weak jump to say fans should value a first four win the same as a Thursday/Friday game.

i appreciate the point MIR is trying to make, but LOL at counting the 65 team years as an expanded field. it was a battle of 16 seeds to see who got to play the #1 seed, and you couldn't even pick a winner on your bracket. my entire life has been a 64 team field m8.

It's smart for the tv network to put that graphic up and try to get people to buy in and go along with that presentation, with that theoretically leading to more regular people treating such games as tournament games and tuning in.

I mean, I would. I think the disconnect here might be between people who treat the NCAA tournament as an invitational and people that treat it as the playoffs of college basketball. I can totally see both ways since the criteria isn’t super objective for a lot of teams that get in, but to me the tournament is just the playoffs so I definitely consider first four as playoff wins. Doesn’t mean I’m happy with just getting there though.

There isn't a huge difference between oscar and Frank.  You can make a valid argument for either of them when it comes to success/results. Although, the tournament records at KSU do stand out.

For me it's mostly about having a fun basketball program.  Frank and his teams were fun to watch.  Because of Frank's personality and the grittiness of his players, it was still entertaining even when they struggled.  oscar is the exact opposite of that idea.  Because of oscar's personality and penchant for making excuses, he needs to win at a higher rate to make his program fun and entertaining.

Hey guys, go much up your own thread about whether your personal opinions on whether the first four games "count" or not (lol gmafb of course they count.  Ask Illinois State or Syracuse if they think they count or not)

This thread is about oscar moving up the list of all time great K-State coaches.

If you really wanna see what purgatory was/is, you should of tried watching K-state basketball pre Huggins, now that was really a kick in the nuts. Frank had some questionable bubble teams as well that had to rally late in the season to make the tourney. Acting like you're watching a team fight to make the tournament isn't something new with just oscar.

Cy Young has the most wins, complete games, games started etc in baseball history. Doesn’t make him the best, far from it.

He's about to make the tourney 4 out of 6 years with K-state. He was a 4 seed, a 9 seed, play in last year, and nobody knows where he'll end up this year.

Frank was a 11 a seed with beaz, a 2 seed, a 5 seed, and then a 8 seed.

And no M^2, it wasn't just wooly, it was Asbury, and Altman's 1 tourney appearance too. All I've ever known growing up is crap bball teams during my cognitive years of living.

Can't tell if you're trolling but this is actually pretty important.  i think it definitely plays a part in football for post-Snyder-hire fans....they all seem to have unrealistic expectations due to recent success because that's all they know....or maybe i my expectations are too low given my pre-Snyder experiences.

HOWEVER, i watched the cats coached by Jack Hartman and then Lon Kruger.  Through 1988 a case could be made that we were on par with our sister school to the east.  We were a basketball power and a delight to watch. Who can forget Ed Nealy???  I digress.  if you only know the Asbury, Wooly, Altman eras then oscar probably does look pretty damn good.  He isn't.

And I have no issue admitting that my problems with oscar are tied to more than just his record.

If you're going to be mediocre you need to have some other fun/entertaining quality about you to make it more palatable.  If your only positives are that you run a clean program and you're easy to gif because you're weird and awkward, then you need to win at a higher rate.

when the debate turns to whether or not a "play-in" is considered a tournament win, you've already lost
If he would have lost that game, people would have busted his ass and railed on the he doesn't win tournament games train even more. It's a valid point to analyze for non-agendites.

this just isn't true.  to me this has nothing to do with oscar.  I felt this way before this dork was even our coach.  I feel the same about the stupid "second round" thing. "Southern Utah States first ever second round win!"   ummmmmm, no.

I hate to agree with meowmeow here but the fact that people that support oscar are arguing this point speaks to the level we have descended to as a program.

It's been said elsewhere, but it sure seems to me like you are actually the one trying to manipulate the facts just so you can say oscar never won a tournament game because you want the guy you dislike to look as bad as possible.  I don't GAF about what the NCAA calls it, but a first four game is a postseason/playoff/tournament game.  If you win you keep playing and if you don't you're out.  What else would you call it?

I'll go a step further and say literally the only people not tallying first four games as tournament wins are people who don't like the school/coach.  You can prove me wrong if you ever complained about schools like Southern Utah State getting credited with a tournament win and it WASN'T in the context of criticizing oscar.

Martin and Currie had problems, I agree. Martin, an East Coast guy, also created his own problems. He would not still be here, maybe by choice/ maybe not. It was a learning experience for him and those lessons learned have really helped him at S. Carolina. Good for him.

Like it or not Webber is a good coach. Recruiter? Mostly hard working blue collar types. Very similar to our football program. The way he changed up the defense and his players squeezed the life out of Texas after a bad start is a good example of his coaching. He could win a Championship and still have haters.

Weber inherited a winning culture with players that had won games in March, an angry home court advantage, sandstorm and tunnel dancing, so factor that in the algorithm as well since none of that exists anymore.

I don't really care if its a fun team to watch or not. I gave myself permission to be a fair weather fan in KSU basketball and it was a great decision. I watch when they play ku or another big team, sometimes, and sometimes I don't. I've given myself permission to be fair weather about all the teams I follow. I bet this summer I attend 7 or 8 Royals games and always know if they won or lost the night before. But I'm not living and dying with each game. Its not really worth my time to give a lot of energy into following teams and giving them my emotions like I have in the past. I'll always follow the Cats and Royals and Chiefs but backing off a lot has been amazing.

So, I'm happy for fellow Cat fans when the team does well.

It is true. Nobody supports oscar, many are just tired of the #BID'rs rinse and repeat shtick. It's old and played out and takes zero thought process to come up with reasonable explanations of what's going on from game to game. Some ppl just want to chat about the cats without having to thumb through a billion "eff oscar, BID, Classic oscar, etc.." bull crap.

For me WC I'm less of an active BID'r but more in the camp of KSU hoops needs to win me back as a fan. I just don't really care very much. If we make the tourney, of course I'll watch, but I don't have any excitement as a fan. I think a lot of K-State fans are more in my camp than the active Booing oscar Testy Westy camp. Its just not worth much time and energy. The program needs to do something other than being a perennial bubble team to get fans excited.

So, it takes all types for a fanbase. Athletic Departments and players really like fans that support the program no matter what. It gives programs some sense of stability and viability even during lean times. But without #BID'rs telling anyone and everyone that oscar is a Major League dork who will always be a step down from what is possible here, then nothing is ever going to change. It's good that Cat fans, the AD, and oscar know that we think that we deserve better. It applies pressure, and that's a good thing. If you find that annoying or repetitious, then just imagine what it feels like for us having to keep saying the same crap over and over for the past six years. We don't enjoy it either. But Cats deserve better than oscar. I think you all know that.

I was just sitting here considering how i would feel if Brad Underwood was our coach and the team was exactly the same...same players, same record, same everything.  I realized i would be very excited for our team and happy with where we sit in the Big 12 race.  I would very much be looking forward to a run in the tourney.   I honestly feel very sad about this because i think i've concluded that i will not be happy or excited for our team so long as oscar is coaching.  I truly wish i could change or overcome that...i really do.

The only year this was true was 2010-2011 and we ended up a damn 5 seed. Stop with revionist history

Frankuary played the 11 and 12 teams off the bubble, but they were both in trouble in early February.

11 was 16-9/4-6 and not in any bracketology before winning 6 straight, including 2 top 10 wins (KU, UT).

12 was 17-8/6-7 before winning 4 of 5 (top 10 Mizzou).

That's not revisionist history, its a credit to Frank for playing great down the stretch both years. Doubt in oscar being able to do the same in our last 6 is justified.

I think a low seed is possible.
Likely will be again't a powerful ream.
Good bye tourney
After the  game Saturday, the Wichita Eagle reported Weber saying when we can run our stuff we do good.  When they can't, they don't play well.  I don't like KU, but they make in game adjustments.  Tech made adjustments at half.  Why can't we do the same?  Coach? Players? No post? Brench? Coaches?
Fans are still the bsst.

Life, Weber is a good coach, a good man, and treats his players well. He does not embarrass us.  We could do worse from a personable side for a coach.  I get annoyed  by his mannerisms.  I would like to find a new coach who can coach and recruit more talented players.  Weber's downfall has always been getting talented players.   Hate can be destructive.  Wishing someone would kill Weber and anyone who supports him is taking support for a team to a disturbing low.   I feel sorry for your family and dog.  Just go out in the garage and have a cussing fit in front of the cat.  Likely when you are.done the cat will crap in the litter box; a fitting critique.

This is disappointing.  I guess we are supposed to be thrilled that we've made the tournament 60% of the time (no wins)?  I would think making the tournament would be the MINIMUM expectation for a program like ours....i'm appalled that I'm supposed to "love" making the tournament 60% of the time (no wins).

Dream. Hope. A fun magical run in the tournament.  Stomping KU.  No embarrassing losses.  People being rewarded with wins at Bramledge against ranked teams when we yell our guts out.  Good solid quality recruits every year.  Fun being a fan.

Mr. Gene none of the above ever has been with Weber, and never will.  Us average Joe grunt fan want these things.  KSU sports are a big enjoyment in life.  You ADs have ruined basketball, and will soon do the same to football.  What is next?

Working our way to a 9 seed. Love this team.

3 more wins and I think it's highly likely we are playing in the 8 v 9 game. So 10-8 and 1 Sprint Center Win or 11-7 and no SC win

Go 3-1 and then 1-1 in KC, we'd be a solid 8 seed. With a chance to get to a 7 seed.

I mean the “f” and “v” are close to each other at least but both “c” and “t” are on the complete opposite side of the keyboard from “k”.

(Paraphrasing) Oscar last night said we are winning close games this year because juniors now how more experience.   Or --- Is Oscar better at coaching mature players.  His last best team here was the first one; mature players.   His best at Illinois was filled with matures.

he’s 100% spot on and I espouse the same opinion all the time
the fun is in the game, not the w/l .  the passion is the game, not the result

I don't know if it's possible and too lazy to check, but would there be a more Oscar thing that to share the conference crown this year with KU, WV and TTech after going O-fer against them? I think not.

This year's squad has definitely been more fun to watch, but they have been painful to watch as well in games where they are shooting below 30%.

I think "enjoyability" is also wrapped around conditioning. We are all conditioned (well most of us) to enjoy the grind it out style of LHC Bill Snyder football. But, when I talk to people who barely follow the BIGXII they think it is pretty vanilla and boring.
