i disagree wholeheartedly on the soccer clock rules. i can't think of a time i have seen a controversy (other than this lol afcon thing), because the ref always allows the pressing team to finish their attacking possession. and because the clock is entirely up to the referee, nobody really ever bitches about it, because there's nothing a team can point to and say "you F'd up" or whatever. even the stoppage time is just a number than can be added onto by stoppage during stoppage time.
i like to compare it to the tag rule in baseball PRE-instant replay. like if you got there before the ball you were safe end of story.
What? First of all this sentence you typed makes it the dumbest process in sports
because the ref always allows the pressing team to finish their attacking possession. and because the clock is entirely up to the referee
whether people are always mad, or whatever, is immaterial. Soccer is literally the only sport where there is subjectivity to when the competition will end. There have been numerous studies as to how accurate officials are when determining how long a match should last, that's ridiculous.
“Waiting to see the added time is an interesting feeling most people don’t understand,” said U.S. women’s national team star Alex Morgan, whose goal in the third minute of stoppage time after two overtimes beat Canada in the 2012 Summer Olympics semifinals.
“It’s something unlike any other sport. I love that uniqueness and the fact the referee has the power to decide exactly at what instant and on what play to call it. You can’t just expect the clock to help you in the final seconds. It’s a scary moment.”

The second half of Iran and Morocco’s tightly contested group match contained nothing too out of the ordinary by World Cup standards. Each side used all three substitutes; there was only one booking; no goals were scored. In a group with Spain and Portugal, both teams presumably were eager to steal a crucial three points and break the 0-0 tie. When the game reached the 90-minute mark, the fourth official raised the electronic board to indicate six minutes of added time.
It should have read 14 minutes.
As for you claim that you can't remember other clock controversies.
you have a very short memory
https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/pro-explains-extra-stoppage-time-sporting-kansas-city-vs-san-jose-earthquakes-auIt's still recent enough where I still remember the Copa America this summer where the referee gave Brazil 10 minutes of stoppage time against Colombia and of course Brazil scored in the 100th minute to win.
There was also a MLS match this year, I forgot who played, Dallas and someone else, where they put 6 minutes on the board but they played 14.
I contend that people are so pissed about stoppage time so often that we all forget, being mad about the timing is just something soccer fans accept, but it's silly.
