I was going to comment that MLB names are very traditional, but if you go back 2 of the last 3 "new" names are Diamondbacks and Devil Rays, which are kind of minor leaguey, I think. (also part of why they went to just Rays?)

Both are animals found in the area of the team that they are named for. They dropped the devil for the dumbest reason ever. Their new owners wanted to rebrand, which is fine, but they wanted to exercise the devil from their franchise when they brought the team, as they were historically shitty when they were sold.

True. I guess most old baseball names are just relatively vague or have moved so they have little to do with the area anyway. Minor league names seem to be more local/regional/mascot based. Prairie dogs around Amarillo? Let's call the team the Sod Poodles and have a prairie dog mascot! But recent MLB team names are similar since they're making a connection with the area.

Like, if an MLB team was called the Blues, Grays, Cleats, Barnstormers, Belts, or Hats, or Stirups, or Green pants, no one would think much of it.. but if it's an expansion team people would be like WTF, why is there not a connection to the area? ha.
