What are you getting instead?

No lock, let's find my bag. I'm aware all that crap can fit in a big briefcase. I'm looking for something small that will barely hold what I need for a court hearing. The biggest things in it would be a 9 x 12 file that holds 8.5 x 11 paper, and a paperback statute book that's smaller than that file and an inch thick. I don't want the ipad and keyboard swimming in a regular laptop bag/briefcase.

I use something very similar (no leather buckle straps, though) made by Tumi. So yeah, probably out of style by a decade or more. But I find it very functional for carrying lap top and various papers.

I don't understand why bicycle messengers (or anyone, really) favor the one strap. The asymmetry would bother me.

the advantage is if you need to access your bag very frequently. you can just swing it around without pulling your arm awkwardly out of some strap. i use it on site visits a lot to take notes and get stuff out and put it back.

Mocat's explanation makes sense but I never have to access my bag while in transit. I just find a backpack awkward to put on/take off. I think it's just a weird hang up of mine or mostly an irrational reluctance to change from what I've always done.

Get the smallest, most practical thing that will hold your stuff. Whatever computer bag is designed for your size laptop will be fine. Get one that has the extra pockets or whatever you'd want for tablets, cords, the size of files you'll be dealing with.

You're smart enough to know what will look ridiculous in your office setting, i.e. backpacks are great and I usually use mine on personal trips, but I'm not rolling into court with it.

as a fan of watching how people act in courtrooms I can tell you the further north east you go the more beat up 50 year old catchers mitt'ish the shitty square briefcases become. it's like a contest to see whose is most beat up to show how long you've been whipping ass in the court room. the further west you go the more likely you are to see an attorney with an ipad or backpack.

For court, I use a black samsonite laptop bag that has a spot for everything I could use in that setting including ipad and keyboard.

For cases with big files, I've got this ridiculous leather-ish hard suitcase thing that rolls.
