After today, Nick should retire from coaching when he's done with 'Bama's bowl game. He will not win another natty. ESPN should hire him to replace Mark May.
-
He has a real rough time with good qbs. Luckily for him, these are quite rare in the SEC.

HAIL SABAN!

HAIL SABAN!
-
Adam Gorney ?@adamgorney 2m
MSFHorn has sources that Saban is going to Texas. Outdoes all the local and national guys working this 24 hours. Impressive work.
-
lots of twitter rumors and crap comin out tonight. It sounds too good to be true, but my fingers are crossed.
-
Surely Snyder would retire the second he hears of this news. No one else is winning the conference while Saban is here (if he ends up here, which is still a very big if)
-
I'd like that Big XII would mush SEC
-
I'd like that Big XII would mush SEC
we will next year regardless
-
The conference is screwed if he makes the jump
-
The conference is screwed if he makes the jump
it would have more stability now tho
-
damn am I glad we go the Dr. Pepper last year. May not see another one until Saban leave.
-
We're going to beat the absolute eff out of a Nick Saban* led Texas team next year.
*he's not going to Texas, you rough ridin' idiots.
-
Anyone not hoping with all the hoping they have that Saban goes to Texas should just leave this message board forever and go be idiots for a paying job at the idiot store.

Saban to the Big 12 would be a dream come true

Saban to the Big 12 would be a dream come true
yes, but he is really, really good and would have the confy title on lock

Wise words, Master :Yoda:
For those gnashing teeth over the Big XII title possibilities evaporating - Saban has a track record of struggling in year 1; and he is occasionally susceptible to the upset (witness Auburn's improbable field goal return for a game-winning TD the other day). To me, that means (if our coaching staff can get it together :crossfingers: ) in '14 or '15 (before Our Guy graduates) we have a chance to win or co-win the Big XII even with Saban in Austin.
If he comes, the CTR will be glorious forever more. :ksu:

Fools, we'll get our ass kicked. :dubious:
-
It would be good for our ability to hire a next coach, for television money, and eventually for recruiting. It would be like if Bill Self was KU's football coach instead of hobby sport coach and much better at coaching.
-
What if Saban goes to Texas and then sucks?
-
It would make Texas' transition to the SEC easier with Saban at the helm. :buh-bye:
-
What if Saban goes to Texas and then sucks?
Mack will be vindicated.
-
Then we keep kicking his ass like we did Mack's and the nation falls deeper in love with America's Team.
-
What if Saban goes to Texas and then sucks?
impossible!!!
-
What if Saban goes to Texas and then sucks?
impossible!!!
He is getting pretty old.
-
Saban to the Big 12 would be a dream come true
-
It's a win-win
Either he dominates at Texas, the Big 12 is then regarded by the media as equal if not better than the SEC, windfall results in higher pre-season rankings for other Big 12 teams, which then lets Big 12 teams populate the rankings even if they lose a couple (SEC effect)
He doesn't dominate at Texas and every time we beat him the media gets all up on our nuts because we beat the all and powerful Saban.
-
Anyone not hoping with all the hoping they have that Saban goes to Texas should just leave this message board forever and go be idiots for a paying job at the idiot store.

His shows on the LHN would be hilarious. Half hour after half hour of him mushing Joel Galindo's fat face.

Someone a while back (I think MiR) was saying it was easier to recruit to Tuscaloosa than Austin. I kind of think he was right.
Read this, and although Austin is far and away a better place than Berkeley, there are some similarities between the communities and institutions:

What if OKSU loses Saturday and Texas wins? Then they'd be firing a Big 12 winning coach the year he won the conference, which is stupid. I don't care if you have some stitched up zombie Bear Bryant-Bobby Bowden-Joe Pa super coach waiting in the rafters, you wouldn't fire a guy who just won the big 12. That's why it can't already be a "done deal"

If Nick Saban wasn’t a football coach he’d probably already be a very comfortably retired sales guy. With crap tons of top sales trophies, closets full of golf gear and swag and walls covered in pics from all the Presidents Club trips he got to take.

Since 2008 Alabama is 84-5 at home. They have 6 national titles....
They have won more national titles in that time frame than they have lost home games.

dammmmmnnnnn, he roasted that dude. The wildest line was the last one we heard. That would have been better if it didn't sound like he was gonna cry, otherwise he cooked Saban as badly as I have ever heard one coach cook another one. Eat your heart out, Steve Spurrier.
-
Saban is also pissed that Jimbo makes more money and is beating his ass in head-to-head games.
-
Bro, Jimbo is like 1-6 against Saban, he is 25-2 against his former assistants.
-
Haha
Sanders said coaches don’t want him talking about what he knows when it comes to paying players.
“I don’t even wear a watch and I know what time it is. They forget I know who’s been bringing the bag and dropping it off,” Sanders said. “I know this stuff. I’m not the one you want to play with when it comes to all of this stuff.”

-
“Coach Saban wasn’t talking to me. Coach Saban wasn’t talking to Jimbo Fisher. He was talking to his boosters. He was talking to his alumni. He was talking to his givers. He was trying to get money,” Sanders said. “That was what he was doing. He was just using us to get to where he was trying to get to.”
Amen, Prime.

They should probably hire someone that they fully expect to fire within 3 years and just get the "can't follow Saban" thing over with as quickly and as cheaply as possible.

You're G.D. right we are.

Saban watched Deuce house it in the Sugar Bowl and he immediately knew the game had passed him by. I'm honestly surprised he even stayed for this season.

No doubt, it's coming.

gE aside it's not really that crazy, at least the game. He's expended tremendous energy this year imo to get Bama into the CFP and it's quickly showing that while bama is the standard, they aren't the only ones anymore (though 99% of any schools would want that) . 2020 was his last natty, and 2021 was the last time they even made the title game. I think he's bowing out at the right time, before he is unable to keep it going.

The ole "don't be the guy that replaces a legend, be the guy that replaces the guy that replaced a legend".
Don't be Ron Prince replacing LHC Bill Snyder, be LHC Bill Snyder replacing Ron Prince . . replacing LHC Bill Snyder. Or something. I don't remember how the transitive property works exactly but you get the idea.
-
Saban blaming the NIL and the state of recruiting seems pretty hypocritical to me. When he took the LSU job, and the Bama job, there is no way he did so without full participation in the underbelly of SEC recruiting practices.
I’d bet he is afraid Alabama’s inability to maintain a clear lead when the differentiator is no longer “willingness to cheat” and instead “ability to pay.” Competing in a free market instead of a black market requires different resources in order to stay ahead.
Certainly he’s very likely to also be upset with a system where the personnel are less like indentured servants or enlisted troops, and instead posses the same freedom of movement as he enjoys and all other Americans enjoy. Those liberties of staff members can be very difficult for men of his generation to accept.
-
Alabama had 25,000 students when he got there, and 80% of them were instate students. Now Alabama has 40,000 students and 60% of them are out-of-state students. The biggest student recruiting weekends are football weekends.
Just in core tuition dollars (before fees and other charges) that's $22,000 more per student per academic year for every out-of-state.

No doubt that it was a huge economic benefit for the University. Probably a horrible decision for many of those kids to pay that much for an Alabama degree when almost all of them could have gotten just as good of an education for a fraction of the cost if they had stayed in-state.

Let's keep this out of the pit please (for those of us who don't go in there)
Having said that, not sure I'd be bragging about an Alabama education when there are 3 other SEC schools alone that are in a swinging-dead-cat-radius of Tuscaloosa where no one questions the undergrad's ability to read.

Offer Kirby Smart $20 million and force him to say no. Then, Georgia will need to give him something close to that, which means they'll be using that $10 million on Kirby when they could have used it elsewhere.
Then, offer another proven guy $10-12 million and take whoever you want because the vast majority of these coaches have outsized egos that won't let them think they can't achieve something close to what Saban did given the resources Bama has.
-
Reverse Ted Lasso, hire some crazy volatile European from the EPL.
-
ESPN says it’s down to Washington’s guy, FSU’s guy, and their current OC.
-
What is the chance this + Jim Harbaugh probably going back to the NFL dominoes to Klieman or Liepold taking a different job?
If Alabama takes Washington’s guy and somehow the Washington OC goes along to Bama (apparently bama tried to get him this past offseason) instead of Washington promoting him, then both Liepold and Kleinman fit the mold that Washington seems to like.
-
there’s zero chance that klieman goes anywhere and I don’t think LL Lame Ass goes anywhere either.

Thinking any coach who is swimming in the pool of candidates won't take a 30% raise because Saban was so successful is dumb af. They can pick almost whoever they want.

the expectations are so extraordinary high that the chance that anyone can come in and meet them is essentially zero
their best option is to hire from within, take a step back for a year or two, and then shop the market. good news is that saban has proven that you can recruit to a shithole like tuscaloosa.

Saban was a far better coach than Snyder. Going to be impossible to replace. you're right they should either hire from within or do someone young with a lot of charisma and high potential like Marcus Freeman

ESPN says it’s down to Washington’s guy, FSU’s guy, and their current OC.
I was just getting ready to say that I think Norvell will take the job considering NCAA just announced probation for Florida State yesterday. However, FSU just announced an 8 year extension for Norvell. That means he, Sark, and Lanning all got new contracts in the 48 hours that Saban has been gone. This leaves DeBoer and Tommy Rees.
I find it really hard to believe that they'll hire Tommy Rees less than a year from him essentially being run out of Notre Dame as the offensive coordinator. Certainly they can find someone with a better resume to take the job.
-
They should get Eric Bienemy
-
Kalen DeBoer, the Washington coach, is most known prior to Washington as being a 3 time NAIA champ for a school from South Dakota (his home state). In his 1 full season at Fresno he went 9-3.
If I’m Washington, and I am looking for a guy who is similar to that, I look at Kleinman and Lightpole.
-
They should get Eric Bienemy
Agree!
-
belichek is the man for the job
-
FSU re upped with Norvell. Saban getting everybody a raise.

Amazing...
I worked in the athletic department at an Ivy League school in the early 2000s and I can say with 100 percent certainty that there were less than 5 pitchers in the entire league who could hit 95 mph with a single pitch during the course of the entire season (let alone consistently) and there were probably only a handful who could hit 90 mph on the regular. That dork asserting that he was consistently getting base hits off pitchers throwing 95 mph is beyond laughable.

I think they promote their OC and give him something on par with what Klieman makes here

they should offer LL, he will be able to focus on coaching instead of getting distracted by the majestic beauty of The (poor man's) Setting

when reviewing Ryan Grub's bio there are two things that give me pause:
1. He has never been a head coach
2. He and his wife, Stephanie, have a daughter, Falynn.

Well I bet most of those out of state kids are from Florida and Mississippi, so maybe not.
Clearly you haven't heard about the great things DeSantis is doing with the school in Florida...
I posted about it on KSO earlier this week! crap is wild.

Ah, so you're doing the thing where you see or read something you don't like or disagree with then you're passive aggressive so we go back and forth until we get to the heart of what you're bothered by? You can have it, that was pretty clearly about the New College baseball team.

so what’s next for saban? i’d love for kelly ripa to fire her husband, mark consuelos, from Live with Kelly and Mark, and replace him with Saban.

It's a joy to watch Georgia, A&M, FSU, et al, pick on the carcass of the post-Saban Bama like vultures devouring a dead cape buffalo in the hot midday African sun.

Not woke enough. Everybody there is white, and if this takes place in Alabama, it should at least have one black person.

“Two Sabes Are Better Than One”
What happens when you pair a World Series MVP with a 7 x College Football National Champion? Tune in to the adventure of a lifetime as Brett Saberhagen joins Nick Saban and the two Sabes travel the country searching for the best town to open up a new breakfast diner! Real money is on the line as these two are not only business partners but also roommates. Their living quarters? A 2024 Kia Telluride!
-
Is the one guy missing a leg?
It is very common for people in the South to have had a leg/foot amputated from diabetes complications.

alright stay with me on this one. They gather up the entire cast of COACH. The re-shoot the entire show, shot for shot, not changing a single word of dialogue, they just replace the indominable Craig T. Nelson with Nick Saban. CTN can be EP (executive producer for those of you who ARENT in showbiz for some reason)
like basically what i'm saying here is Nick Saban :: COACH : Luke Combs :: Fast Car
-
CTN will need play DC Luther Van Dam

I like the reboot idea, but I'd go with Most Extreme Elimination Challenge and let Nick Saban to the voice work for Kenny Blackenship.

Let's not get boxed in. We've all seen the Aflac commercials, we know the guy can act. Let's see what kind of range he has.

I just would like to say, I see the work that 'clams is doing in this thread, and I believe that it's really important work. Keep going, young man.

An intriguing side plot would be watching saban’s character arc as he gradually comes to realize that 100% of his clientele don’t have millions of dollars to spend. Like maybe to drive this point home in the first episode a famished Nick Saban suggests they order a pizza and then when he says to the crew guy “how much do I owe ya for the pie?” The guy jokingly says “20 thou(sand American dollars)” and nicks just like “ok” bc he has absolutely no clue what stuff costs and 20 large is pocket change to him

I want a Nick Saban themed farming show like Jeremy Clarkson.
Saban buys some land in bama and tries to make money hobby farming it with some good ole boys doing all the contract work.
Ms Terry opens a restaurant on the property that is a big hit and Nick has to go there most nights to socialize and hob knob with the guests but he absolutely hates it.
"I told you Terry, I have to check on the new process barn for the goats tonight. Jethro says it should be finished and ready for them to move in"
"But niccckkk, Jefferson Cumworthy and Hudson Prumphey will be there tonight with all their friends. And do you remember lil Kayleeiiih, ole Henderson's daughter, well it's her 18th birthday tonight and she wants to see you"
"Alright Ms Terry, keep them entertained until 7:30 and I'll be there"

Barge Gas: Return of Saban

Could he do drama? I suspect he could.

WHAT’S SABAN CRAVIN’?
In this series an eclectic mix of aspiring chefs compete each week to prepare the perfect dish for Nick Saban. At the beginning of the episode Nick Saban will give some kind of cryptic statement to the group. Then over the course of the episode each contestant will have the opportunity to go on a 1-on-1 “date” with him where they can ask him any kind of stuff as long as it’s not food or drink related. At the end of the episode each contestant presents their dish to Nick Saban. If by chance a contestant guesses what Nick Saban is cravin’ that week, they automatically advance to the next round (even if the food was awful) and for the non-automatic qualifiers Nick Saban will eliminate the person whose food sucked the worst, and maybe some bonus prize for whoever makes the best dish that week.
Winner gets, I dunno? Executive chef gig at like Cracker Barrel or whatever

He loves boating, but I don't think he fish's off it.

Saban is from WV so the winner will just have to cook pepperoni rolls (or whatever they call them at coal aggie) for all 10 episodes and they win.

Alabama's Struggle for Relevancy

The downfall can obviously happen to any program...
Not counting interims, there were 7 Bama coaches between Bryant and Saban and you could easily argue that they whiffed on 5 of those 7. I'd argue Bill Curry and Gene Stallings were hits and the rest where whiffs (I had forgotten about how Bama tried to screw over Curry, which is why he left after 3 years to take the Kentucky job - oopsie - and then Stallings came in). That's a pretty poor percentage considering their resources.
Similarly, Florida has had six coaches since Spurrier left and you could easily say they whiffed on five of the six with Meyer being the exception (Napier probably has one more year left before he's fired).
This hiring coaches stuff is a lot harder than the perception (even when you're rolling in $$$$$) and there's way more duds than dudes.

As a KU fan, believe me that I've experienced all the downside of the coaching carousel. The years between Mangino and LL were brutal. KSU kinda has lucked out with CK following Snyder. KU has also lucked out with its run of basketball coaches during my entire lifetime. It's going to be weird when KU reverts to mediocrity, but it seems inevitable.

Exactly.

They could become Auburn-like

Florida

Rocky Top
-
Yeah, being like Tennessee or Auburn or LSU or Florida is nothing like what Nebraska turned into. Nebraska was already worse than any of those programs when they made the jump to the Big 10 which really helped them suck.

That’s very good and might be true.
Nick has all kinds of side gigs including partner in a series of Benz dealerships.
An aside. There was a story about a young man who worked at a restaurant in Tuscaloosa who walked to work every day. Then one day the managers called him out to tell him someone noticed him walking to work in his uniform almost every day and they had (anonymously) bought him a car. A nice late model Maxima.
If you look at a map and kind of know where Nick’s French Chateau style house is on Lake Tuscaloosa and you plotted the fastest route to the Alabama Football offices, past that restaurant. You can see how it might have been Nick.
