Gee, I wonder if it's related to this. Bob's Diner, more like Bob's a Diddler. Allegedly.

it's kind of hard to see but the only non-red i noticed was 1912 when Riley County went Progressive - Teddy Roosevelt!

I have a book about the founding of Manhattan through 1900 that is pretty interesting (couldn't find a picture online and not sure where it is).
One random thing I learned was that during bleeding kansas Manhattan sent some militia type folks to help protect Lawrence but they left a couple of weeks before Lawrence got sacked.
Also Manhattan never had to worry about any border ruffians due to their proximity to Ft. Riley.

Description
When Isaac Goodnow and five fellow New Englanders arrived at the junction of the Kansas and Big Blue rivers in March of 1855, they pitched a tent and launched a town. Harassment and homesickness almost drove them back east, but they held their ground to establish an anti-slavery and educational stronghold: the town of Manhattan, Kansas. Kevin Olson's lively history of Manhattan's founding illuminates the divisive forces that had to be overcome amidst the turbulence of the Civil War era and the sheer drama of building a town from scratch on the Great Plains frontier. With an eye for vivid detail and reflecting a native's deep knowledge of the city, Olson chronicles the first four decades of Manhattan as it grew from tent to town. Although spared much of the Bleeding Kansas violence, Manhattan saw its share of shootouts and lynchings in its Wild West days. Olson evocatively recaptures those rough-and-tumble times and effectively describes the town's key social and economic transformations. He also highlights the emergence of a college town and "New England village" by 1866, followed by Manhattan's growth and modernization in the 1890s. Drawing on town records as well as the personal papers of boosters, Olson mirrors the history of Kansas through the lens of this one community by interweaving ecology, relations with Native Americans, agriculture, literature, architecture, social mores, politics, economic issues, and university origins to recreate a vibrant cross-section of town life. His account of Kansa Indian settlement Blue Earth Village shines a light on a prehistory that until now has been little covered; his retelling of the emigration of the New England settlers recalls one of the most compelling stories of the antebellum era; and his coverage of the 1860s surpasses that of most previous histories. Written for general readers while boasting an impressive depth of scholarship, "Frontier Manhattan" takes us on a journey into the past to shop at Higginbotham and Purcell's or enjoy a stay at the Manhattan House hotel with jovial mayor Andrew Mead. With its strong sense of place and personality, Olson's book is as engaging as it is informative in celebrating the origins and early life of this quintessential Kansas city.
Having only gone to school in Manhattan and not knowing all of its history there were alot of familiar names in the book that now have streets etc named after them.

Yeah. I think that’s life for a lot of football coaches though. I happened to be in Chicago with a couple of other mhk buds the weekend of his bachelor party. It was in the basement of some swanky place where we had to have our names on a list and then Shane’s little brother kevin also had to come up to the door to vouch for us. We showed up completely hammered and about fifteen minutes after cutler and Cavalari had left which in retrospect was probably for the best. And that’s been another segment of facts with daris. Here’s a word from our sponsor.

https://cityofmhk.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2126 aggieville could look a lot different in the near future.
also how does someone not get fired for this $500k whoopsie https://1350kman.com/fire-suppression-system-adds-500k-to-construction-costs-for-aggieville-garage/
-
sounds like the city initially approved the project w/o sprinklers, and just this week decided they did in fact want the garage sprinkled. parking garages have exceptions in the code so this is not a black and white issue as far as i can tell. i am not a plumbing engineer.
nobody will get fired.
-
It's required for a 4 story building so they should have had it budgeted.
-
If the city approves without it then why would you budget it?
-
They approved it without apparently knowing it was required.
-
I'm not sure that it is required in the IFC for a parking garage

A fire suppression system is mandated for buildings four stories or taller, according to Deputy City Manager Jason Hilgers.

Mandated by what entity? If it's the city, they whiffed during their permit review.
As I've stated twice, I'm not sure a parking garage is subject to the same fire protection requirements as a typical building in the IFC

Man, J.B. was one severe looking dude. I listed to the three-part The Dollop podcast about him. Very weird life. Lawrence specifically? Did he ever even step foot in Lawrence? GTFOOMF w/ that nonsense.
Upon brief research (Wikipedia), it appears he did step foot in Lawrence briefly. However, he should be no more associated with Lawrence than with the rest of KS. If the people of LFK had any sense they would have built their city near a Fort (like Isaac Goodnow, Samuel Pomeroy and Joseph Denison) so that it was well protected against invading Missouri trash.

We’re saddened to inform you that we’ve lost our lease and will be shutting the doors on our physical location at the close of business on Saturday, January 22.
We’ve been serving up loud food and spicy music to you all since November of 1998, so we invite you in these last two weeks to enjoy a Tijuana Trainwreck or a glass of sangria with your friends.
While we’re sad this is the end for our physical location, we are still excited to continue providing Manhattan and the surrounding area with our unique tastes from the gulf coast, southern Texas and New Mexico through our offsite catering kitchen, just as we have for the past six years.
We know many of you have fond memories of times spent in our restaurant. Thank you for making us part of your celebrations over these past 20 plus years. It’s been an honor to be small part of your life in this city we love so much.
As they say at Mardi Gras, let the good times roll!

Fun fact. Summer of 2008ish Ben Ji was working as a dish dog at Bolo's. Bartender comes back and was like "Hey, check out who is sitting at the bar". We look over and it's Bill rough ridin' Murray. Apparently his brothers wife was taking some vet classes at Kstate then and he was visiting.
Anyways he has a couple beers and then orders bananas foster. I'm a huge Bill Murray fan (I was a caddy for like 2 months in highschool because I liked caddy shack so much) and begged the main cook to let me make the bananas foster. He agreed and I rough ridin' tossed those Nana's is brown sugar and flamed em up.
Afterwards I wrote "Bill Murray's Pan" on it in sharpie and hung it on the wall in the kitchen where it stayed for like 5 days before getting put back into regular circulation.

HCI probably didn't make the best decision in forcing the Cox brothers out when they just so happened to be very very good friends with the landlord of their flagship restaurant in town. :dunno: I anticipate we will see something new move into that location soon enough and based on the people that will likely be involved it will probably be good to great.

I don't know if the cooks will quit. HCI offered them all jobs at their other restaurants and are compensating them well to finish out. I had brunch there today and it was packed. Place will be packed for the next two weeks.
HCI probably didn't make the best decision in forcing the Cox brothers out when they just so happened to be very very good friends with the landlord of their flagship restaurant in town. :dunno: I anticipate we will see something new move into that location soon enough and based on the people that will likely be involved it will probably be good to great.
Who will be involved? Rob? Will bolos open up somewhere else?
I would be surprised if they opened Bolos somewhere else. They will probably just offer catering out of their ghost kitchen.

Dreiling not getting Coco Bolo's lease renewed because the owner of the building thinks he's a dick

Not really tbh. I wish them the best though. Any idea what their timeline is? I know that building needed a LOT of work.

Manhattan townies. My spring break plans most likely busted so I'm looking for shorter trips/things to do with the kids. I was thinking of heading to Manhattan for a day or so. I think there is a Cat baseball game that week that we might hit. What else should I do for a day or so with the kids. Any good new/kid friendly restaurants that my kids can do fun stuff and I can have booze drinks? Is Goolsbys place open? Thanks for any tips.

Goolsby's is open and good for kids but not sure about food there. My family likes Hi Lo a lot. Goolsby's only has the weird swipe card/self-serve taps and I don't really drink beer any more but you can walk over to the hotel bar and bring drinks back over. Pretty odd.
Depending upon weather Konza hike and/or Pillsbury (over 75). The baseball games are legit great for the kids with the play structure now.

They opened a trampoline place close to Anderson/Seth Child. It's at the old Genesis/Ray's Apple Mart location depending on your era of MHK knowledge. The car museum is right there too if they would enjoy that.
Goolsby's is pretty small and has had large groups dominating it when I've gone. It would probably be fun but I would aim for a weekday or early afternoon for it.
-
Also, if one of your kids is a snob who only drinks cocktails, Goolsby's probably won't work.
-
Goolsbys kinda blows honestly.

I've only been once but yeah it was a little underwhelming. I think it will be fun on a random summer afternoon.

I'd recommend Far Out Arcade before Goolsbys. (They will also let you bring food and drink in)

Friends. Thanks again for the responses. Still debating, but in general, give me your top 3 eateries in town currently. I think I have the kid stuff covered now, but Mrs SF knows I'm going to work in eating and drinking so I want to be prepared. Still going to have kids with me so the places will have to have something for them.

LABCO, Bourbon & Baker, Wine Dive - all three have burgers and fries in some capacity. Tallgrass TapHouse if you really have to appease the kids.

Breakfast: chef or early edition. chef obviously way better quality, early edition good option for kiddos
Lunch options: rock a belly deli, so long, hillside cafe, lucha probably won't even be that busy during spring break
dinner: what waks said but I'd also add el patron in there

Great, thanks. Its pretty great that these are still great options. Rockabelly and So Long have always been my fav spots and its great that they are still kicking after all these years. I was just looking for something new and had heard there were some places in old downtown that may be worth hitting, but it seems like the old faithful are my best bet, which i'm perfectly fine with. I may try Tallgrass for giggles, but we will see. Does Manhattan Brewery have any decent to go beers? I was looking at their site and my stop by and grab something if I have time.

I cannot in good conscience see someone recommend hillside. That place is terrible.

MBC has good beer and will put anything in a crowler to go. They don't have as many options at the moment due to some construction but still plenty to wet your whistle.

Kate’s in dodge city (circa 2004-ish) and buckley’s in seattle are places I recommend (the former only if you have to be in dc, the latter purely sports event-related) that serve burgers and tacos.

While I think this is true, are most usually known for their burgers? Hillside has regulars that swear by their burgers. Burgers are like half the menu now and the other half is Mexican (a very bastardized version).

Nobody knows, because no one has ever ordered the hamburgeusa.

For what it is I'd rather have a hillside burger and spend the same or less than another fast food restaurant. The double patty is massive!

Doesn't count like at all. The only ones I've seen with burgers are like two or three with kids menus, for the little gringlets that go in to them

Thanks for all the tips friends. RAB and So Long were great as usual. Hit them both twice actually. Lucha was too busy every time we tried. We also really enjoyed Tall Grass. Mrs SF threw me a curveball and made us go ziplining right when we pulled in to town. I sort of knew she would do it when she saw the billboard on the way in. The kids really enjoyed it and I was just hoping not to die. The weather got pretty crappy right after so I was glad we got it in. The Bluemont hotel was fine. I forgot about the new Courtyard right across the street so i was bummed we didn't stay there for free. Goolsbys was ok. Their shitty tiny bowling was a bit pricy and I didn't do the stupid wall beer tap thingy. I don't hate the idea, but using a card to load another card to use is just stupid and annoying so I passed. We went to the trampoline park and walked right the eff back out when we hit the door and there were 17,000 kids in there punching each other. The Cat baseball game was great. The baseball and soccer upgrades are pretty sweet. Crazy how much Manhattan has grown/improved since we were in college. Great time.

That Arby's has been a Popeyes for like a decade.

A Taco Bell at that location would kill it and instantly become an easy time stamp between Kat grads.
Did you ever go to the taco bell after the bars closed?!? "No, I graduated before then"

Today is a special day for the Manhattan region and the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly is scheduled to be at the Manhattan Conference Center at 10 a.m. this morning to make a special economic development announcement. This project announcement will be the culmination of nearly a year of work for many in this community. We can't wait to share it with everyone.
Wonder what this is going to be.... supposed to be in the SW pott county area

If it was south of 24, it would be Dempsey Rd. Green Valley stops at 24.
Over the weekend I had heard it was going in at 24 and Excel as ChiComCat said. My impression was that it was going to be the NE corner of that intersection.

I'm hearing 24 & Excel on NE side. I also heard Manhattan is going to annex that entire area to Lake Elbo Rd. because Scorpion wanted to be in Manhattan city limits.
-
Is it safe to assume this is the type of thing people predicted would come to Manhattan due to NBAF?
Sounds like a great thing for the local economy. Supposed to bring 500 jobs averaging $76k per year salaries.
-
Now Red Lobster?

The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to participate in Monday's economic development announcement by Scorpion Biological Services. At a large Manhattan gathering organized by Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and other state and local officials, Scorpion executives announced they intend to construct a 500,000+ square foot facility for biomanufacturing in the Manhattan region. The company expects to invest $576 million on the facility and another $82 million in equipment and is expected to employ over 500 people at an average salary of over $75,000.
The site of the facility is going to be at the northeast corner of U.S. 24 and Excel Road in Pottawatomie County. Part of the project requirements will be annexation into Manhattan.
The Manhattan City Commission will be considering a resolution at their regular meeting tonight that outlines Scorpion's commitment to the region and the proposed incentives from the community that would be part of the overall transaction. A copy of the resolution can be found here.
Some of the positive aspects of this project include:
• The projected investment and jobs by the company makes Monday's announcement the largest private sector announcement in the history of Manhattan. According to a recent article in the Manhattan Mercury, it was reported that the largest private investment in the history of Manhattan would be the new Art and Light Museum. Scorpion would ultimately be nearly 20 times larger. And, unlike the significant public investments made by Kansas State and Fort Riley, the Scorpion facility will ultimately be assessed and on the tax rolls.
• The average salary of workers at Scorpion will be 70 percent higher than the current average salary in Manhattan ($44,000).
• According to Impact DataSource, an economics firm in Austin, Texas, the project will generate 500 direct jobs and an additional 700 indirect jobs and bring over 1,000 new residents to the area. The total direct payroll is projected to be $750 million over 20 years. These will be new dollars into the Manhattan regional economy and should translate into over $43 million in new taxable purchases.
• According to Impact DataSource, the city should see net benefits of $118 million over the first 20 years of operations in the form of sales and property taxes as well as other fees and services after accounting for additional costs that accompany new residents and commercial development.
• The jobs created by Scorpion will be instrumental in keeping graduates and young professionals in the region, giving the community a boost in economic growth and prosperity.
• Manhattan was able to leverage the strengths of the community with an effective incentive proposal to win the project over a number of communities in a 25+ state search. The estimated economic payback of the city's proposed 10-year tax abatement and $8 million jobs grant is three (3) years. The funding for the jobs grant will come from the dedicated economic development sales tax approved by Manhattan voters and should not effect any other operations of the city.
These are only a few of the reasons why this project has the potential to change the economic landscape in Manhattan for decades. Please plan to attend tonight's meeting at 7 p.m. if you can. We have received positive feedback from commissioners but they always appreciate getting support from the business community. Additionally, Scorpion Chairman Jeff Wolf and other company representatives will be at the meeting to answer question

There was an attempt to annex like a year ago. There's some rule where it just takes an incredibly insignificant amount of signatures so it was brought to the City Commission and they turned it down because it was hardly representative of the population. There have been a lot of meetings regarding annexation or other options for improving emergency services in the area. I'm sure that will all need to be dealt with in some regard.

There have been a lot of meetings regarding annexation or other options for improving emergency services in the area. I'm sure that will all need to be dealt with in some regard.

Far from a done deal it would seem
Heard the Director of the chamber speak today and he said that there was a lot of work needing to be done still but didn't give details. And that he talked with another business in town not too happy about having to compete with this place for employees.

I was going to say something like "that's capitalism, baby!" but the new place is getting a bunch of free crap that the existing guy won't. But overall, yeah, suck a dick and pay your people more.

We don’t know who the other guy (or gal!) is, but yeah probably.
-
Maybe the other business owner would have more capacity to pay their employees more if they weren't so busy accommodating numerous requests to suck dicks.

to be clear, the other entity is Bob Stoops?

Saw in the county commission minutes there is talk of a 5 story development project for aggieville by Back Nine Development. Any ideas where that is going?

I think in the surface level parking south of Moro.

What KK said. I believe Manhattan is giving the lot to Back Nine contingent on a $40m investment in a multi-use development there. The artist renderings look pretty cool. There's a Mercury article out there if KK will post it.

Is Ft. Riley as loud everyone is saying?
-
I almost never hear it any more. I think because I have lived with it my whole life.

I live on the west side of town. They've been pretty active. I also drive to Salina once a week for work and there are always helicopters in the air around the base which seems more frequent in the last couple of months. Maybe crosspost this in WW3 thread?

If the tank gunnery range up by Riley is really hopping, then, welp . . .

forgot aggiville brewing company should be open spring of next year. other location (old Briggs building) they will take up most of that space and will have around a 300 person beer garden out that way as well. exciting times for craft beer peeps in mhk.
-
Why do we build like 4 versions of varying quality of the exact same business? Maybe would be better off getting something different?

I haven't seen the article but assumed they plan to just do a massive reno on the building. Which i could also see never happening.

That's the Laramie Plaza job. They can expect a lawsuit of sorts from that from what I've heard.

They're supposed to build a $40 million dollar development. If they don't build the big job they end up having to pay a penalty of something like a couple million for a property that is already worth that? I suspect they'll just build one of their typical four story apartment buildings, pay the fine and call it good.

Oh man, memories from that place. Some shitty football player tried to fight me in those apartments because he wanted to eff my girlfriend. Also the only time I was offered drugs by a stranger was in there. That comprised my two visits inside. It was a sack of crap in 1996.
I looks like Brett Cale doesn't live there, is he prepared to take in the tenants when they get kicked out next week? Looking at those two photos, there's no way in hell it's gonna get fixed by then.
-
Yeah, I was trying to put together my memories of it last night and could think tons of people I’d pak’d with there but couldn’t really figure out why or who actually lived there.
-
Is this the complex North of Haymaker? Kind of up by the AIB?
-
Yeah, north of the TKE house and south of AIB

This helps. Those guys were one of three groups of people I know that I had pak episodes with there, but I couldn't remember if they lived there or if they would come over to one of the other groups' place who might've lived there.
I vaguely remember the places being a little shittier than most shitty places we all lived in. Lol at the differences in shittiness one lived in being determined by tens of dollars in rent price differences.

If I were an old, that's a little too close to campus for me. Maybe it will be filled with old dudes who want a bachelor pad super close to the sorority houses over there.
I thought back 9 and the university were supposed to be developing condos across from the alumni center? I got marketing materials for those like three years ago and there isn't crap at that location but grass.
-
They didn’t get enough pre ordered condos for the ones across from the old stadium. It was actually trinium (now renamed) that got that bid.
I heard earlier this week about the royal towers I can’t believe it’s not cheaper to just tear down and rebuild it.
What’s interesting is two houses just got tore down on poyntz directly across from the sand volleyball courts that are going to be the same thing
