know of a new brewery opening in KC next year. No Coast Brewing...I know the owner  :sadpeek:

hint: I'm the owner
Congrats. Best of luck.

That's awesome

My good friend just started one in LA 3 months ago and is the happiest he has ever been and its growing fast.

No Coast is an A+ awesome name.

I know a place that does beer dinners up in Colorado about 6 times a year or so.  New Belgium, Deschutes and some smaller ones.  If Colorado becomes a market you are starting to expand to, let me know and I will put you in touch with some people.

cool, we'll start very small so distribution outside of the KC area is going to be awhile, like 7-10 years. unless it really explodes and we have to expand much faster than we plan to.

No, I'll keep my job with the FD since it only requires 9 or 10 days/month. I'll be able to do both while the business is small, and when it grows I should be able to hire someone that runs the day-to-day stuff. Plan is to open January '15 right now.

Before you open, you should have a private gE tasting party, let fellow gE'ers sample your brews and take donations for it.

KCFD, how much $$ have you invested in starting up your brewery? I've always been interested in the process of starting a brewery/restaurant

kcfd, a brewery/restaurant just opened up in downtown salina, and the brewmaster dudes are firefighters here

haven't tried it yet as it's been packed (can't vouch for quality of food/drink, as the bar is obviously pretty low for something like this in salina.  menu looks promising)

when it's all said and done I'll have approx 50k in equipment plus another 50-60k in costs (rent, insurance, buildout, ingredients, etc...)

so about, 100k. all the "experts" I talked to said it couldn't be done for less than 250. I did have to cut back on a few things, but  I spent on the important things. Opening a brewery is very different than a restaurant. I have no desire to cook and serve food. a lot of people wanted me to open a brewpub, but I shut that down pretty quick.

Building relationships with food trucks is a great idea. Synergy with no cost to your business.

I get it.  I don't cross contaminate either.

Also, my firm is loaded with drunks.  I'd get them to do a tasting too.

When does the first batch get done?

O crap. Might have a name battle. Where are you doing your taproom?  NKC like the other new ones?

And food truck buddies is the way to go. Yazoo in Nashville does this and was a great setup

yes have checked into the name situ. no conflict with names, since they're No. Coast. but they do have all the good facebook/website/twitter names taken so I'll have to do something like no coast ales or something like that. haven't put a TON of thought into that just yet.

looking at two possible locations: Crossroads by Grinders or West Bottoms. CR would be great b/c more foot traffic and more bars/restaurants. But more $$$. West bottoms is cheap (like $2/sf) and you can get HUGE spaces. but little foot traffic and low visibility. Possible upside with it being the next "cool" place to be. I'm looking at two spaces this week. one of them being the old FD headquarters in the bottoms. so that would be neat.

Food trucks is a great idea! haven't thought of that. will def look into it. thanks guys!

First batch will be in August. All beer brewed from August-December will have to be given away due to a lack of license to sell liquor at that point. so....there's that.

While not a legal concern ASFAIK, the confusion between No and North (since they seem to use No and No. in their marketing) would cause me pause.

You would have to check into the guy in NE and see what his status is though...that might be close enough to cause you heartburn.
