i'm sad that there are "right" and "left" leaning tax "analysts".
-
I really hate Sam Brownback
-
Brownback's approval rating is sitting at 37% right now. Is there any chance that he might actually lose his reelection campaign? I'm thinking probably not.

Even worse are the left and right leaning "scientists" that vie for government grants.

probably not but who knows.
-
It's been a rough couple months. Obama's 2nd term is driving our people to be crazier than they normally are.
-
Businesses making decisions for tax reasons isn't some new concept.
-
Does Sam Brownback hurt the image of Kansas State University? I have to think he does.
-
I do like that GTM, which outside of a couple retail locations, is entirely based in MHK and was supposedly going to build a new plant in Texas despite having excess capacity in Manhattan already.
In the entire thought process, Kansas' tax rate might have been as high as 143 on the list of things considered.
Also amusing that the best example is something that created 600 minimum-wage jobs that will likely be allocated to part-time employees.

Think of all that tax revenue Kansas is going to generate off of those 600 minimum-wage jobs, though . . .
-
It seemed to me that Brownback's main goal was to steal more businesses from MO. I don't think that has happened so far, but with it only being in effect a couple months, it is still pretty early for that.

i couldn't help but be reminded...

I can see how the pass through model of business can be an incentive to some, but I don't think they should pay nothing.. At least give them .5% or something. They should contribute like the rest of us.

The money will either go back into the business to expand or be taxed as income by someone.
-
The same paper that did the poll that said SB approval rating was 37% is the same that published the income tax reduction was going to cause a billion plus dollar deficit. Both stats are horrificly inaccurate. Whether you like him or not, he will win in a landslide and the state with have a surplus. Liberals will continue to do petty and moronic things like publish the Obituary for the State of Kansas and further diminish their already trite and existence in this state.

The poll wasn't conducted by a newspaper. It was done by Public Policy Polling, based out of North Carolina. I believe it. Brownback is really unpopular. He will still win, though, because he's not unpopular enough to lose to a democrat.

You know why you shouldn't? That poll is beyond stale and has been conducted who knows how many times since, yet the same brownback heaters keep citing it.

Every able working adult should chip in to keep the state of Kansas functioning.

I'm not even sure exactly what that emoticon means but most Americans, at least the ones with a little education, would know that tax cuts haven't resulted into substantial growth or jobs.
The only trickle down we have gotten has puddled into overseas manufacturing and Cayman bank accounts.
You know this.

I'd be willing to listen to a tenable argument as to how reducing the highest marginal tax rate has directly 1)adversely affected domestic manufacturing, or 2) caused the increased the use of offshore tax shelters.

The LJW is the paper I was talking about (and its a rough ridin' joke) and they've run that poll in about a million articles. If you think that 2 months old is fresh or that the poll is anything but an outlier you're either Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) or have never been to Kansas.
For God sakes, it says more people oppose lower income taxes than approve of it.

It says 48% oppose no state income tax, which I imagine pretty closely reflects the percentage of people that receive a check as opposed to write a check come April 15th each year.

bwwahhhahahahahahaah
Yeah it is possible he could end in a surplus. When you slash and burn vital government services its pretty easy to get a positive cash flow. I just want to thank you rough ridin' idiots for attempting to turn Kansas into Somalia. I mean who needs a functioning government that doesn't violate the laws and constitution of the state at every turn, rough ridin' pussies thats who.

I think that number is probably closer to 90% than 48%. Most people overpay and get refunds.

Just when we've began to recover from the sequester carnage, Kansas comes in and guts vital government services. We're all going to starve again.

Brownback decides to come back out for an encore:

A new law signed by Gov. Sam Brownback requires a Kansas welfare agency to test residents seeking cash assistance if there is a reasonable suspicion they are using drugs.
Hmmm, wonder what that reasonable suspicion might be??

Not to get all tea-party tard here, but this is one of the things that causes an outrage that I truly don't get. I don't understand why drug testing for welfare recipients is so outlandishly offensive and unconstitutional. I understand that most people posting the "I have to take a drug test so that I can pay for YOUR living" bullshit all over facebook think that anyone on welfare is black and addicted to the crackpipe, but it seems like a reasonable thing to require that someone getting welfare payments is clean, or at least getting help.
-
My only concern is that "reasonable suspicion" is not defined.
-

Yeah, if they keep it vague like that then I agree that it's bullshit.

Another concern is that when this was tried in Florida the vast majority were clean and the state ended up losing more money from the drug tests than they saved by outing junkies. According to this article, only 108 of the 4,086 who were tested failed. That's 2.6%. Florida lost nearly $46K on the deal. It's a non-issue that causes people to get hot under the collar and share stupid crap on Facebook.

This law would actually put offenders into programs to get help while they continue to get their welfare money. They would only lose their money on the second failed drug test. It's really a surprisingly progressive program, considering it's Kansas, but I don't understand how we are going to fund it while continuing to cut tax revenue. It's going to be pretty expensive, despite profiling welfare applicants to minimize negative results.

I'm all for it but would like to see it extended to contractors and subsidy recipients.
If the CEO of Kancare is hitting the pipe and scraping millions off the top of his contract for himself then I want him in rehab or his contract revoked.

How many got clean so they could get their welfare checks? More than one person I bet. Would also rather have that $46k going to testing facilities who employ tax paying Americans than to foreign drug lords.

It's a huge percentage - The Boston police officer who sent a mass e-mail in which he compared Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. to a "banana-eating jungle monkey" has apologized, saying he's not a racist. ...

Well, I think we can expect the state to pass a law next year mandating creationism being taught in all Kansas schools.

I can see how the pass through model of business can be an incentive to some, but I don't think they should pay nothing.. At least give them .5% or something. They should contribute like the rest of us.
The money will either go back into the business to expand or be taxed as income by someone.
Kind of like how every dollar paid out in the form of unemployment or welfare goes back into the economy immediately to be taxed on purchases/income tax...
Except SOME of this money will find its way into off shore tax shelters, since it is clearly not as essential to survival as the two examples I stated above.
-

Pulling more money out of the economy in the form of taxes from small business owners will not stimulate the economy. It's been proven over and over.

much of that money ends up as bombs and foreign aid and other crap that doesn't help Americans, either.

Nonsense, everyone knows that every dollar of welfare is spent on black market drugs and funneled to Mexican cartels
-
The tobacco industry would be mumped without welfare. So would the frozen food industry.
Is this the thread where some occutard said that lower marginal tax rates increased the use of offshore tax shelters? Just think about how stupid that notion is.

Some tax between 0-1% is not going to hurt it either.

lower corporate tax, higher personal tax /thread
Pretty much correct, shifting of taxes between income/sales & use/property tax is a dumb game. The main idea is to increase your tax base or keep budgets low. Kansas has pretty liberal exemptions for corporations/businesses when it comes to taxes, hence the whole Kansas is open for business thing. I'm not sure how effective Kansas policies are in bringing in business from other states and if it has actually increased the tax base. I imagine Manhattan is going to be reaping windfalls from Brownback policies, which is cool. But I never see anything remotely intelligent when talking about brownback or what he is doing. I don't know, I don't live in Kansas, Perhaps someone could send me some links on things he does that are good/bad?
TIA

"Both K-State and KU students are paying more to fund higher education than the state of Kansas, which is not fair," said Regent Dan Lykins of Topeka.
Are you seriously telling me that college students have to pay for a bigger share of their education than the taxpayers at large? Are you rough ridin' kidding me?! What kind of society are we living in? :runaway:

Yeah, I mean how is it good for the taxpaying base at large to support people getting college educations?

If we got rid of worthless degrees then people could get an education that they can actually do something with, get a good job, pay taxes, and fund more worthwhile degrees.

AAU membership and 2025 top 50 talk should continue to be laughed at.
yeah, expect the animal to resign soon after we start to see the effects of these cuts. the state of kansas does not deserve him.

Yes, totally agree. If taxpayers would foot more of the bill, we could send way more kids to college. That's the problem with this economy, not enough college graduates. Especially not enough liberal arts degrees.

pretty sure in this specific instance it's just the word "liberal"

I'm not even sure what they would consider a "liberal arts degree." Would Econ fall in there? Poly Sci? Or just like Medieval History or Poetry?

Well it is pretty awesome for me considering the sales tax got raised, the standard deduction gets lowered $1,500, my property taxes are going up, the mortgage interest deducation is getting cut and my taxes are getting cut by like .7% to offset all of that. Sounds good.
-

It's a social science so I think it would be classified as liberal arts. Now that you have freak schools offering Phd's in business the line has been blurred. Freak schools like Nebraska have (or at least had) it in the school of business as well.

Kansas would have just been better off eliminating the state income tax altogether, and increasing sales taxes on things like booze and cigarettes.. A regressive tax system just squeezes the lower and middle class, and it cuts funding for a lot of basic things like infrastructure and education.

Sales taxes only would really squeeze the middle and lower class and anyone else that spends most or all of their income already.

Yeah, I'm not talking about the state sales tax (which I'm pretty sure Kansas increased). I'm talking about implementing a double externality tax which creates a disincentive for something harmful (in this case smoking/drinking) and also creates a long-term benefit for society (less smokers/alcoholics/DUI's/etc). We already have federal taxes on things like cigarettes, but states can impose them as well. I've always said that if Kansas really wanted to attract business and become a truly conservative state, it should just get rid of the state income tax altogether. Washington state is a good example... they don't have a state income tax, but they tax the crap out of things like alcohol and tobacco (and they'll be taxing marijuana pretty soon too).

Yeah that didn't hurt as much as it could've because we couldn't claim all of our hours, but that sucks too. Some pro-family agenda.

Hi Guise,
Kansas has been phasing out its funding of higher education for like 4 decades. Welcome to the party, cluemasters.
K-State is losing $6 million out of its $700 million operating budget. Calm down.

I guess I might as well put this here:
The KBOR asked for plans from all of the administrators from KBOR universities in response to the budget cuts. Kansas State's was the only one rejected because Shultz was the only administrator who was going to continue to freeze faculty salaries and not budget a 2% bump in '14 like every other school. The KBOR was signing off on these plans, because K-State and every other school was asking permission for tuition increases.
As stated previously, the faculty is pretty pissed at Kirk. I don't think they are vote of no confidence pissed, but between 2025, the growth of administrative staff and salary without faculty retention efforts I think Kirk is hunting for a new landing spot.

So who is more pissed, the underlings that actually do work, or the 100 plus profs who are making $150K plus a year?
Are you implying that university professors don't do real work? Could you butthurt conservatives just provide a list of all the jobs that are legit, and the ones that are called jobs, but don't really qualify as actual jobs? TIA.
Where did I say any job wasn't legit? You are perpetually pissed off about everything all the time. You are in a perpetual state of butthurt about everything, always.
-
I guess I might as well put this here:
The KBOR asked for plans from all of the administrators from KBOR universities in response to the budget cuts. Kansas State's was the only one rejected because Shultz was the only administrator who was going to continue to freeze faculty salaries and not budget a 2% bump in '14 like every other school. The KBOR was signing off on these plans, because K-State and every other school was asking permission for tuition increases.

I think that question answers itself.

I can't be there on Friday either. If I can find it Friday (in kc), I'll bring it to Manhattan Saturday.

A society is best served by having an educated citizenry. Why anyone would ever make drastic cuts to public education baffles me. As a whole, who do you think is doing better? The states whose public education systems have consistently ranked in the Top 10 over the last few decades, or the states finishing in the bottom 10? Because if you think there's no difference, just walk around Louisiana for a while.

Got into it pretty good with some visiting Kansas relatives about what a jackass Brownback is being on higher education (amongst other things). I just want to make sure it's not the $150K plus tenured prof types who aren't raising a stink about the salaries.

I think I know your stance here....But it is not the tenured folks raising a stink.
A lot of the issues that many people have with Shulz/Brownback (dirth of new tenure lines, buildings over salary increases, lack of state support, nickel and dime student fees/tuition increases, non-teaching/researching staff/salary bloat) are issues that are present other places they just are worse here.

Well, I don't have a huge problem with UPKS's desire for more and improved buildings. It's needed, and the state sure as crap ain't gonna live up to their responsibilities on that. Nobody wants to spend the kind of money that college demands these days and go to classes in dumps. That said, there's got to be a way to get an increase for faculty and that way is for the state to live up to their fiduciary responsibility.

I completely agree. I'm not saying buildings weren't a problem. Deferred maintenance is a huge problem. But nationally there is a pattern that more and more post-docs, instructors, visiting profs and adjuncts are getting hired and student fees and tuition are increasingly going to rec expansions etc. I think the rec and the parking garage are great and were needed improvements. But with budgets the way they are, I'd prefer keeping the quality of instruction high.

It'll be interesting actually. Now that CA has effectively voted out almost all the GOP - to the point where they can no longer obstruct - the dems have a super majority, just like Kansas but in the reverse and a little bit later.
Gentlemen's agreement to have this conversation again in 3 years after we've seen more of these policies take hold.

It will be interesting in that both states will have polar opposite leaders, but the problems facing both states are much different. For example, illegal immigration and insane pensions for public workers aren't major issues for Kansas.

My money is on High Speed Rail sinking them

What has California done that is the polar opposite of making it OK to quarantine AIDS patients or banning sustainable development or passing a sales tax because of a terrible income tax plan? I mean this seems roughly a billion times more reasonable and responsible than what Brownback is doing:

There is no polar opposite of Brownback on the left - at least not one who has consolidated power like him
What he is doing is unprecedented and he's testing it out on Kansans, which is concerning to me. Even if the person was as far left as Brownback is right it would bother me.

-
The ONLY thing keeping CA from going completely broke at this moment is the fact that Gerry Brown is old enough to understand how a budget works. Even though CA's debt is nearly a trillion dollars, the legislature sees a budget surplus and wants to start cranking the welfare machine back to full throttle, and he says no. Once he's gone and the next governor gets in, it's curtains for the golden state. But P1k3 is correct in saying that the high speed rail debacle will be the final nail. Will probably be the first state to file for bankruptcy.

Fair enough, but by polar opposite I meant one state is being run by extreme right wingers and the other by extreme left wingers. I'd agree that Kansas republicans are further right than California democrats are left though.

Some of my favorite's
Finally, Lawrence Democrat John Wilson stands up to offer his own cheeky amendment. If gun-free zones are so dangerous, he argues sarcastically, why not get rid of the metal detectors and guards at the entrances to this very building, which wind up costing Kansas taxpayers upwards of $200,000 annually, and just allow everyone to carry concealed weapons in the state capitol instead?
Howell says that sounds like a great idea to him. The amendment passes overwhelmingly, as does the bill itself.
In the current legislative session, the House and Senate voted to rescind a 25-year-old ban on quarantining people with AIDS, and Rep. Steve Brunk of Wichita introduced a bill that would require cities that put fluoride in their water to inform customers that fluoridation lowers the I.Q. of children.
Of course, for strategists like Rove, loose-talking Republicans like Peck – who casually refers to the president as "Barack Hussein Obama" during our conversation – are precisely the reason swing voters are being spooked by the GOP. Peck remains unmoved. "What bothers me is there are places in America that have gone so far to the left that they'd look at us as nutcases," he says pleasantly. "I consider us in Kansas mainstream America – normal, red-blooded Americans who believe in the Constitution of the United States. Yes, we're conservative, but we're not a bunch of gun-toting cowboys." A few moments later, he slides his chair back, and the wheel makes a loud cracking sound when it hits the plastic floor coaster. "That wasn't gunshots, by the way!" he cackles.

Only 20% of the polling was done on the internet, so the sample size probably isn't quite big enough to draw any conclusions from phone vs online. If you look at the approval ratings, the Brownback approval rating from the online voters was lower than it was with the phone voters, but the disapproval rating was also much lower. There were a large percentage of "not sures".

A pool of 693 voters giving an approval rating of 33% would have a margin of error of +/- 3.5% in achieving a 95% confidence interval. This means that Brownback very well could be leading among Kansas voters, but the race is most certainly very close at this point in time, and based upon this survey, it is more likely that Brownback is trailing than leading.

The issue is that they haven't benefitted during a good economy, either. Looking at data now even during the several year "rebound" its apparent that the gains are still not returning to the middle and lower income classes that lost so much. Hence the argument for wage increases.

The issue is that they haven't benefitted during a good economy, either. Looking at data now even during the several year "rebound" its apparent that the gains are still not returning to the middle and lower income classes that lost so much. Hence the argument for wage increases.
 Quite a "rebound" we're having! Guys, this Moscow guy is onto something. The poor can't get ahead even in this roaring recovery, so we really ought to hike the minimum wage and raise taxes or take on more debt to redistribute more money to them. The economy is fine - we've got to address inequality!
-
PPP is a left leaning pollster. Not sure how you guys don't know this. That being said, Brownback isn't winning this round by 30 points like he did last last time. Probably more like 10 or 15.
The only things that have directly caused more poverty than social engineering are street drugs and Barack Obama. The unintended consequences of social engineering invariably outweigh the benefits by a substantial margin. Most recent examples include the mortgage crisis and crushing student loan debt.
-
Both sides need to just knock off all the social engineering BS and work on the economy. Everything else will fall into place.

You obviously didn't see the part where I put "rebound" in quotations. Rebound or not though, the fact remains that the 1% have captured 95% of the income gains that have materialized. There is something structurally wrong. If you don't have an issue with that or would rather quibble over your own misinterpretations that's your thing.

The press release did seem left-leaning, but I don't think the questions asked should have skewed the results.

The income inequality people come off as really rough ridin' crazy. Very dogmatic in a reli-jelly way.

yeah, imo, the kids def need it from a source that won't be awkward and will fully inform them. This is a tough one for me. I mean, an uninformed kid could really make life tough without the right info but kids are still minors and parents def have rights.

Parents have rights but certain lines need to be drawn at the health of their child. I don't know where I would draw it in regards to sex ed. Kids need to know of risks but I would be ok with parents having a say in prevention methods.

Less than 5% of parents opt out.

Having an "opt out" policy that allows parents some control over some of the things their kids are taught in school is just fine. An opt-in policy is a bad idea, though. Something tells me that less than 50% of parents would opt in.

I can only assume that you would be ok with licensing and regulating those who can and can't have kids, then sterilize those that don't pass the test.

Um, did you read your own link? Parents do have control, they can opt-out at the time that sex-ed classes are happening. When I was in elementary school this was the case, and I remember one girl in the whole class that went to watch beauty and beast or something while everyone else was learning about why they were getting BFNARs. I don't see what the problem is. Seriously, what is it? Are you of the belief that sex-ed is useless?

That isn't what I'm saying at all. I think every kid should go to sex ed, but if their parents don't want them there, having the opportunity to opt out is just fine. It's not like very many parents actually opt out. Asking parents to opt in would be bad, though.
-
yup, if you don't want your kids to be educated, that's your right as a parent. children are property of their parents after all, and they can do with them whatever they see fit.

Ah yes, agreed. Having opt-in sex-ed would create the illusion that the effectiveness of sex-education is neutral or undecided rather than the vital component of adolescence that everyone knows it is. Over time, we would forget that sex education was ever part of a core curriculum and would become something akin to signing your kid up for Spanish or Band which is what these morons want.
-
I've never understood the problem w/ sex ed.
-
I've never understood the problem w/ sex ed.
The problem is that its not good enough. But undoubtedly there is that same group of people that want to rehash the (already settled) discussion of whether or not it should exist at all.
-
I've never understood the problem w/ sex ed.
It's mostly parents that don't trust their kids enough to believe that they will follow the values they have been taught if they are aware of ways to avoid horrible consequences.
-
I've never understood the problem w/ sex ed.
To some religious, it teaches sin through birth control and doesn't discourage premarital.
-
The ks proposed bill had a change to opt out out committee, rather than opt in, but it was ignored. Ks wants as few kids sexually educated as possible.
In states that have such rules, you shouldn't be eligible for state assistance if you can't afford to have kids and aren't on record as taking the class.

This one is personal for me, both of the gentlemen sitting next to them have children my age, one of them, John Wheeler, has a daughter who I was very good friends with. I can't believe they didn't speak stronger against this, I have no idea who Alford is. This doesn't surprise me though, this is exactly how we think white people talk about us when we're not around and the fact that this went unchecked confirms it.

I don't think Steve Alford was trying to be demeaning with his comments. What he said was actually more in terms of "hey, I'm totally looking out for black people" - not that such ignorant paternalistic nonsense is any less offensive. Racism is racism even if it's just based on outright stupidity, as in this case.
It's just not terribly surprising to me that this RINO who raised everyone's taxes because "derp, we gotta pay what the Supreme Court tells us to pay on educayshun!" turns out to be a massive rough ridin' dumbass in other walks of life, not unlike a lot of our state representatives.
Now the question is whether anybody will step forward to challenge him for election to seize that princely $20,000 salary or whatever these dorks get paid.

I can't believe they didn't speak stronger against this, I have no idea who Alford is. This doesn't surprise me though, this is exactly how we think white people talk about us when we're not around and the fact that this went unchecked confirms it.

Are you surprised this guy is a biggoted moron? Steve Alford is one of those so-called “Courageous Republicans” who joined the Dems to raise our taxes.
What the eff are you talking about you lying psychopath? Alford has only run as a republican and he's won four general elections unopposed in all of them. Why tell a lie to attempt to distract from what he did?
He can't get out of his own way.
i think ksudub's point is that the kansas republican party isn't exactly unified (because "democrats" have a hard time winning in kansas), and that alford belongs to the left leaning segment of the party.
I think he leans pretty alt to the right.
Regardless. Ignoring the divisions within the Kansas republican party is disingenuous.
You're right, I wonder what one's he ignores regarding the democrats.
-
I don't think Steve Alford was trying to be demeaning with his comments.
Now the question is whether anybody will step forward to challenge him for election to seize that princely $20,000 salary or whatever these dorks get paid.
so this guy is a RINO simply because he voted to raise taxes? do you also classify Reagan as a RINO? he raised taxes a couple of times to generate revenue for the govt.

Now here’s a guy KSUW can get behind!
“My mother and father came here from Italy, legally of course. I have a soft spot for the Mexican community having lived there,” he said. “I’m not going to get into my personal life, but I will say we have four grandkids and some have a different ethnic and racial background. I don’t say that. I don’t use my grandkids. So, I have a soft spot, but still, I’m going to do my job. You have to do it.”

and, like I said, that's besides the point. whether this guy is an alt right guy, a party-line kansas conservative, or a rino, we can all recognize that he's a very dumb politician with a very disturbing worldview.

My niece takes that stuff for epilepsy. The powerful prescription drugs she had been taking worked for a month or so then stop then they'd prescribe a different drug. All of these drugs had bad side effects such as aggressive personality, depression, weight gain, etc. My brother decided to take her off these drugs after a Dr suggested the oil. She still has seizures regularly but at least she is back to her old self and can interact with people.

This kind of regulation pisses me off. Prohibition didn’t work out so well, this isn’t cocaine or anything.

Quick question as someone who has an epileptic child. What’s the point of the oil if she’s still having seizures?

You really would think a state like Kansas would be all in on products like this and industrial hemp, given how easy it would be to grow here. I understand recreation marijuana being illegal, though I don’t agree with it. Our legislature is just mindblowingly stupid and they seem to one up themselves every year.

She has slightly more seizures now (roughly one per week) but no side effects.

We were in the same boat, so we stopped giving her the medication. Her neurologist started her on a new medication about a year ago and she hasn't had a seizure since and we haven't noticed any negative side effects.

Don't like Kris, but against in-state tuition for non US citizens. If the bishops want to subsidize these people, create private scholarships.
Their families pay the same taxes every other Kansan pays to subsidize them.

The 4,000 veterans who gathered for the speech remained energetic from the time Trump took the stage to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and chants of “U.S.A.” Throughout the speech, they cheered as he touted goals he said his administration had met, promised to cut trade deficits and took aim at Democrats, whom he called “disciples of a very low-IQ person, Maxine Waters,” a California congresswoman.

I haven't lived in Kansas in nearly a decade and that isn't someone I'd seek out to hear anyway.
I think I've only seen two Republican politicians speak publicly, Nancy Kasselbaum and Steve King. Kasselbaum was for a Landon Lecture, I also met Fred Phelps that day. I went to see Steve King for shock value and I thought there was a 10% chance he'd be taken out and I wanted to be there if it happened.

K-State had some big time people come in for Landon Lectures when I was in school. Saw Bush(W), Bill Clinton and Rumsfield. Looks like they also had Robert Gates (sec of def), David Petraeus and Vicente Fox speak while I was in school but I don't think I went to those.
I looked at who has spoken recently and its not nearly as impressive, Pompeo in 2019 and Sonia Sotomayor in 2011 were the only names that jumped out at me.

Not to mention Martin Luther King, Jr speaking on 19 Jan 1968 at AFH less than 3 months before he was murdered.
https://www.lib.k-state.edu/martin-luther-king-jr-visits-k-state#:~:text=On%20January%2019%2C%201968%2C%20K,our%20nation%2C%20the%20progress%20made (https://www.lib.k-state.edu/martin-luther-king-jr-visits-k-state#:~:text=On%20January%2019%2C%201968%2C%20K,our%20nation%2C%20the%20progress%20made)
Our society continues to stubbornly ignore his prophetic wisdom:
King reinforced the importance of pushing for change through non-violent protests and actions. He reasoned that it was “the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom and human dignity.” His address also expressed his opposition to the Vietnam War. He felt we had greater problems to solve on the home front, especially since war efforts appeared futile and incapable of reaching success. Quoting poverty and civil rights as primary issues, he added that the expanse of money funneled into the war effort would have been better utilized for these problems instead.

If he were older, the stuff from middle school wouldn't be a big deal to me. It's refreshing that he admits to doing it when you compare him to someone like Kavanaugh. He's just 19, though. This is recent behavior, and why on earth would anyone vote for any 19 year old to hold public office, anyway?

There isn't an pub running for the position. Also, the Demrats must of had a POS incumbent that couldn't win the primary.

as i understand it, they already did. he won the primary and is running unopposed in the general.

maybe, like, arrest him? problem solved?

not a lawyer, but i think there is usually a thing in child porn laws where it has to be an adult doing the distributing for it to be illegal.

This is a major flaw with elections. Most of the voting public don't know and don't investigate candidates. This is why we got a bunch of stupid, corrupt thieves and idiots running this government. The worst part is this crap has been getting steadily more stupid, corrupt, crookeder, and downright shittier for the general public. I don't see it getting any better in my lifetime.

IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL! That's an outrage, where the eff are these people's parents? I don't think there is any way a middle schooler can act like that, as prolifically as he did, without attentive adults not noticing. Sorry fellow Gen X parents, but we're rough ridin' awful at this.

Not a parent, and no dog in this fight (other than he clearly is a POS) but I really think this is a unique problem of this day and age in the sense of I think his parents could reasonably be decent parents but these kids have tech too early they can do a lot of crap w/o you knowing. IDK, not trying to cut him or his parents any slack, just like him being a gen z kid I think tons of those kids are doing stupid horrible crap online to each other like all the time. See them acting like total shitheads on any online game.

Passow’s relationship with Coleman ran into trouble quickly, even as she remained impressed by the drive of the young political candidate, and the two spoke of starting a life together. According to Passow, one particular incident irreparably broke their relationship. In a hot tub at an Airbnb in Kansas City, she said, the two were discussing Coleman’s interest in a threesome on December 27, 2019. Passow said it wasn’t her thing, but maybe as a birthday present she’d break up with him for just one day and he could do one. Coleman didn’t like the joke, she recalled. “He sat there for a few seconds, then he jumped on top of me, put his hands around my throat and started squeezing, and slapped me three times, and said ‘I don’t know where the eff you think you’re going,’” Passow recalled, and said she pushed him off of her.
Next, Passow said, Coleman demanded she apologize for threatening to break up, stormed out of the hot tub, and went to the car. She didn’t want to lose him, she said, and texted him an apology. He said he was only warming up the car. “I’m sorry baby I failed your crap test,” he texted back. The texts, reviewed by The Intercept, were sent to a number associated with Coleman’s campaign finance registration.

I'll be honest, the only reason I think that this kid being a sociopath/bad person/criminal matters is that it makes him much less effective at his job which is advocating for and passing good legislation.
I think a lot of people genuinely think that the "character" of the person they are voting for is more important than what policies they will vote for and I find that completely insane.

The lack of trust and personal accountability is a big deal, especially given who our president is.
I do in general agree with you regarding past transgressions. However, specifically regarding this candidate, his age is important to consider. He clearly has an impulse problem which leads him to making poor decisions, at 20 years old, brain science tells us he's far from being done doing really stupid crap. The fact that he isn't ready to own it yet should tell us all that he is still prone to making similar mistakes.
-

I mean only to the extent that it compromises the person's ability to get elected and/or their ability to do what I want them to.
Like if the worst Clinton crime family Q stuff was true about Hillary and she had a whole epstein island full of skeletons in her closet but she was passing medicare for all and such, then I don't understand preferring John McCain leading with dignity and honor and crushing poor people.
I get that there are shades here and the more compromised a person is, the more likely the house of cards is to come down, but to me that is the only consideration.

Yes, to the extent that this makes him an unreliable vessel through which to implement my favored policies this is a big liability.

Really, if he gets elected it won't matter much regardless. Nobody will work with him. He'll be on no important committees. And there's only so much (i.e. "nothing") a democrat from wyco with no friends can accomplish in the Kansas legislature.

Not sure of your reference here, but from my viewpoint, who are the Kansas Dems? In my locale, McPherson, not a single D on the ballot for any state or local race. Which is a black eye of sorts. Biden pulled in nearly 40% of the vote, Bollier performed similarly, and Barnett was substantially lower at 26%.

Based on my understanding that these allegations were all publicized before the vote, I have to agree. It’s a stain on the voters for sure, but I don’t see how you take the choice out of their hands just because their selection is unpalatable.

I don't think there were actually. IIRC, the revelation about his revenge porn stuff came after the primary.
As of August 7, the only dirt the star had on him was that he made some mean comments about Herman Cain:
Meanwhile, on the Kansas side of the metro, Democrat Aaron Coleman reacted with delight to prominent Republican Herman Cain’s death from COVID-19. And he told a former Kansas Republican lawmaker and talk show host that he’d “laugh and giggle when you get COVID and die.” Nonetheless, Coleman is winning his District 37 Kansas House primary by one vote. His lead, though still not secure, grew to 807-801 on Friday, according to the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office.

A nurse that won't take a vaccine should also be fired. Same with anyone else in the health industry that has to wear a mask even when there is not a pandemic.

I have friends that work at st lukes plaza and shawnee mission med center. not nurses that said that they were told that the vaccine would be mandatory for all employees when there's enough for everyone.

Honestly in the midst of the crazy he seems ok for a modern republican. Like thinking the election was legitimate is sadly a radical view for that party.
-
While the election stuff needs to die, can the mega libs please admit that had Trump won. Not only would cities have burned, but the legitimacy of the election would have been called into question on top of an onslaught of challenges. Just like Libs have done on every Pub win for the past 2 decades plus (followed by an immediate call for impeachment within months)

The vaccine isn't safe, it is untested, it is the mark of the beast and we definitely shouldn't share it with poor countries who are begging for it
-
WTF is youtube doing with that? Bizarre. I can see youtube videos filled with wild, inaccurate information, that certainly isn't a standard for removal.
-
Pretty much all social media type businesses will pull covid misinformation
-
As they should. Covid misinformation and vaccine conspiracies literally have deadly consequences.
-
lol the comments were that covid isn't contagious and masks cause cancer. maga
-
I have a customer who said he was going to that. He told me that this is all much less than a flu and the real danger is what we have done to the kids' immune systems by not introducing them to the same level of everyone else's funk as we do every other year.
So, this guy believes in the actuality of how an immune system works, but not that a virus is a real thing or the studies associated with it.

and apparently he believes that masks absolutely work thus depriving kids of the exposure. That's a pretty thin line to walk.
-
Any belief will stand up to scrutiny as long as you never apply any scrutiny to it.
-
like, claiming that the masks are stopping the ordinary bugs from challenging the immune system but then saying they don't stop covid is just so stupid.

I think the claim is Covid isn't real or the damage from Covid is less than damage from kids not getting such as much.

Pretty long article so I can’t copy it all from the app but this will give you the general flavor:
GRINNELL, Kansas—A few weeks into the Covid-19 lockdown, a van with Colorado plates pulled up to the Hometown Grocery & Cafe in Grinnell, a town of 269 people in a county of 2,600. “I’m here to buy all of your toilet paper,” the driver said.
Through the shop window, owner Gwen Wolf could see toilet paper stacked high in the woman’s van. Many of Ms. Wolf’s regulars lived on farms far from the nearest town, and she didn’t like the idea of strangers depriving them of necessities. “I showed her the door,” recalled Ms. Wolf, a Gove County native.
Two more cars from Colorado appeared at her store and word spread fast: Outsiders were pulling off Interstate 70 and snatching up Gove County’s dwindling supply of toilet paper.
“They’re welcome to do what’s best for themselves, but not at our expense,” said Lance “L.T.” Coburn, 23 years old, who runs an automobile-restoration shop with his father.
As disease, racial unrest and political violence spread through the U.S. over the past 19 months, communities around the country found themselves grappling with the sense that the most immediate threat they faced was from other Americans, rather than foreign adversaries.
Police in Colby, Kansas, a town of 5,500 in Thomas County, about 40 miles northwest of Grinnell, received intelligence reports last year from other law-enforcement agencies that Black Lives Matter protesters from Colorado planned demonstrations in Kansas, said Colby Police Chief Ron Alexander. Similar reports reached the Gove County Sheriff’s Office.

Yeah, that snippet seem to be addressing two completely different things. I'm assuming the link and the article is about irrational fear of others?

Similar reports reached the Gove County Sheriff’s Office.
The reports were followed by rumors, inflated in the retelling, of protesters planning to rampage through towns along I-70, fears that proved unfounded.
Callers demanded Chief Alexander take action. “They were worried we were going to end up like Minneapolis or Portland,” he recalled. The chief gave assurances that police wouldn’t tolerate violence.
Mr. Coburn was among the Gove County residents who saw local menace in distant events, and decided to do something about it.
On an early fall evening last year, eight or so people, including Mr. Coburn, decided they needed to act on their own. They held the inaugural meeting of the Gove County Emergency Response Group at a park in Gove City, population 86.
By December, their weekly meetings were drawing dozens of people, some from local volunteer fire departments and emergency services, said Andrew Todd, 30, one of the organizers.
The group’s inception coincided with a cluster of Covid-19 cases that briefly left Gove County with the highest death rate from the pandemic in the U.S. Sheriff Allan Weber, a well-loved figure, died of the disease a week before Christmas. A sheriff’s deputy contracted Covid-19 and so did everyone at the county’s emergency-operations center.
Lance ‘L.T.’ Coburn does auto repair and restoration work with his father in Quinter, Kansas.
Members of the Gove County Emergency Response Group thought that they might be needed to prevent outside agitators from exiting the freeway. “All of the worst stuff comes from I-70, that I know,” said Roger Wilson, 60, manager of a hunting preserve. “You can’t be quite as sure about who you’re dealing with.”
Mr. Coburn said he pictured group members guarding the doors of the local pharmacy to safeguard medicines. Or, they might station themselves at freeway exits, giving out a gallon or two of gasoline to those in need and pointing them down the road.
The group wasn’t a secret, but members didn’t publicize it, either.
A group of women who jokingly called themselves the Enlightened Ladies Club caught wind and were suspicious. They leaned liberal for the most part in conservative Gove County and sometimes dined together to share views. “We were anticipating some sort of vigilante group,” said Patrice Ostmeyer, who works part time at the public library.
Members of the civil-defense group said they saw themselves as reinforcements for local authorities, not as a militia. “We don’t want to be associated with that name, and that’s not what we’re doing,” Mr. Todd said.
Worried about its image, the group went public early this year, posting a mission statement at the Dairy Queen, feed stores and the Pit Stop gas station.
“Gove County Emergency Response Group works to help maintain peace in Gove County,” the flier said. “By educating citizens in our area of preparedness and self-defense; inviting citizens of all backgrounds and races to stand unified against lawlessness in times of disaster and civil unrest; and building strong relationships with law enforcement through cooperative community efforts.”

Gene Tilton, 84, whose family arrived in the 1880s, was among those who didn’t think the community needed a self-defense group. “If the need did arise, it wouldn’t take long to rally one,” said Mr. Tilton, who grows crops and raises cattle on 10,000 acres.
Michael Machen, who has practiced medicine in Gove County for 35 years, inhabits the liberal end of the local political spectrum. He attended the wedding of L.T. Coburn’s parents, and he delivered L.T. himself. Dr. Machen hired the Coburns to restore his 1966 Ford Mustang.
“They’re good guys,” Dr. Machen, 67, said of the group members he knows. “That said, we’ve already got an emergency response team here that involves people that are real law enforcement, and emergency preparedness people that are trained to do that.”
Dr. Machen found the group’s concerns overblown. “If someone pulled off the highway and went to Dollar General and there was toilet paper, sure they’re going to buy it,” he said. “But I don’t see that as a threat to our way of life.”
Members of the Emergency Response Group were surprised by the suspicion they aroused. They scheduled a public meeting to explain themselves. One of the guests was Sheriff Shawn Mesch.
He had just been named interim sheriff when news broke of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. That was when he decided to find out more about the self-defense group that had cropped up on his turf.
While visiting Mr. Todd’s father-in-law’s farm to inspect a new pickup truck for registration, Sheriff Mesch accepted an invitation to attend the group’s public meeting.

On a cold Sunday night in January, some 50 people gathered at Mr. Coburn’s garage in Quinter. To make room, he moved aside his restoration projects—a 1969 Jaguar XKE and a 1955 Ford F-150 pickup.
The meeting opened with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The fire chief gave a talk on fire preparedness. A firearms instructor talked about safe ways to interact with police when pulled over while ferrying a gun in the car.
Mr. Todd asked Sheriff Mesch: “Are we doing anything here that’s illegal?” The sheriff said no. He also made it clear to the gathering that he wouldn’t put up with armed civilians taking the law into their own hands.
“They have the right to assemble like everybody,” Sheriff Mesch said later. “But I wanted to let them know where I stood.”
The sheriff said he saw no looming threat to residents of his county, and certainly didn’t anticipate any trouble his deputies and other trained first responders couldn’t handle. “I appreciate their sentiment, and if they were needed I would ask them,” the sheriff said. “But that’s the only way.”
The sheriff’s rebuff gave the group pause. Over the following months, leaders retooled their message. Instead of emphasizing their willingness to protect the county from urban rioters, members posted Facebook messages offering residents aid in coping with snow, tornadoes, fires and similar hazards.
Gove County Sheriff Shawn Mesch.
During a deep cold spell in February, the group announced that members were on call to assist with frozen pipes or dead car batteries. They sponsored first-aid training and a “Homesteader Gardening Class.” They posted information about treating rattlesnake bites
“We’re here to help people,” Mr. Todd said. “The last thing we want to do is make people uncomfortable.”
Some local skeptics wondered if the group was polishing its image while secretly remaining more militant than members would admit. Others believed that the group’s members sensed their neighbors’ unease and made a sincere decision to shift course.
Don Tilton, Gene Tilton’s 64-year-old son, was concerned when he first spotted the group’s fliers, he said, and attended a meeting at the Coburn garage to scout out its intentions.
“I walked away,” Don Tilton said, “satisfied that we were all trying to help each other and look after each other.”
He hasn’t heard much chatter about the group recently. Gove County, he said, has moved on.

“The Hate U Give” is a young adult novel about the aftermath of a police officer killing a Black teenager. “Black Girl Unlimited” explores issues of poverty, sexual violence, depression and racism. “Blended” is about an 11-year-old biracial girl dealing with her parents’ divorce.
It also includes “Fences,” a play by August Wilson that won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1987, and “They Called Themselves the K.K.K.,” a historical look at how the white supremacist group took root in America.

If the kids really want to read these books, they are readily available online. Not that i agree with the removal.

Book censoring has been going on for the past milinual. During the fourth century catholics destroyed all books that did not agree with their beliefs. Such documents described Jesus as having a wife and a child. Jesus also had four bothers and two sisters. This crap wasn't going to fly, so they burned any documents with this information in them. :horrorsurprise:

Can we get a c&p? That's behind a paywall.
Gene Tilton grows crops and raises cattle in Quinter, Kansas.

Woahhhhh, this is probably the first time I have known someone quoted in a WSJ article.
Over the summer my dad told me he had given permission for the pastor in Levant (Tiny town outside of colby my dad lived in as a kid and randomly goes to church at when he's out there) to hunt our land and I was like whatever. I was out there hunting this fall and saw a pickup pull up around 330pm and a guy and his son get out with some bows to go deer hunting. I walked over and chatted for a bit and confirmed that he was the pastor named Ron my dad had mentioned to me so I gave them some tips on where I had spooked some deer while pheasant hunting and we parted ways.
When I mentioned it to my dad and asked how some teeny town in BFE Kansas could afford to have a full time pastor he casually mentioned that "Ron" was the chief of police in Colby and just a pastor on the side.
So anyways I've met the chief of police in Colby KS and he is the only non family member who has permission to hunt out at the cat ranch....ole ben ji's dad is always playing the long game.

Lucifer just mumped up… He sent his agents of darkness to come try and trip me up, they searched all my belongings and repeatedly told me not to go to the White House. Why do I have a Ruger 1911 magazine with three bullets but not the 1911? Idk God said to… they hope I throw them away… I’m telling you that Satan just tripped up His own game…. There will be a miracle happening at the White House. I believe Joe Biden is the AntiChrist now and he will suffer a fatal head wound. I’ll deal that blow in Christ’s name. Bro…. This is getting deep. And I’m going to do it with bullets and no gun…. and the Agents of Darkness are the ones who tripped up their own game by making a big deal about the bullets. I bet there Father the Devil is pissed off really bad now…. Secret Service Agent Greg Lucifer won’t even take my phone calls. He is rough ridin' terrified because He knows I’m coming for him to deal a grievous blow in Christ name. I’m going to take back their slogan…. I’m fighting for the Souls of this Great Nation.

Sigh of relief after I saw I misread this guy's "cut off the head" as "cut the head off."

This guy sounds like he is more clinically psychotic than a threat to the nation's security. Hope he gets the help that he needs. (Although mental health services are chronically underfunded in KS and that could be a really challenge.)

What if the company is Koch Industries and they had to keep it secret because everyone would flip out if they knew it was for them.

If he wins the general, I'm afraid you're going to rue this day. Attorneys General, especially ones who are activist and politically driven have a eff ton of power. Weirdly enough Schmidt winning would probably be better for somewhat controlling Kkkobach and how he'd behave as an AG.
-
crap I didn’t realize Kobach was back to crap on my state, I’m going to have to break down and vote in the general to cast a ballot against him
-
I was disheartened when I realized I would not be able to primary Kris yesterday (still a registered dem). Very surprised that “no,” not only won, but so resoundingly. Was expecting 55-45 yes.
Nice to see evidence that the old “religious right” has lost steam, though sadly most have drifted more toward MAGA than to a moderate aka sd pub version or independent type. This will probably wake up the pro-life right in KS tho. Half-expecting a “summer of love” type focus on the abortion battle over the next year or so.
That’s good. I prefer these battles be at the state level to a fed level whatever the outcome.

i think all mascots should be animals. when i was in highschool my neighbor (went to the same high school as me) told me that he would tease my dad (went to rival high school - Wichita SE Buffaloes) by chanting during games "WHAT DO WE EAT? BUFFALO MEAT!"
and full disclosure i never attempted to get that chant going nor did i ever hear anyone do it, but i can imagine how that was probably quite the gas in the 70s and probably got a lot of laughs and high fives.
get wrecked buffs, lmao

I personally don't get the need for a spirit animal. Who started that anyway?
Let's build a stadium, hire a guy who knows how to teach the sport, buy a crap ton of uniforms and stuff, encourage the kids to play, pay for refs, organize a conference of other schools and convince them all of a common set of rules and such, then play some games?
Cool, but what kind of animal are we?

He will embrace that line if his handlers tell him that is what he should do.
Shortly after the invasion began, he did a trip to Poland to show support for Ukraine and US troops in Europe.
He is pivoting to this for some reason. I'm assuming his handlers have told him it will be good for the grift. Basically the border / immigration grift is always a sure bet for him.

A brilliant analysis-and funny to boot-What's the Matter with Kansas? is a vivid portrait of an upside-down world where blue-collar patriots recite the Pledge while they strangle their life chances; where small farmers cast their votes for a Wall Street order that will eventually push them off their land; and where a group of frat boys, lawyers, and CEOs has managed to convince the country that it speaks on behalf of the People.

This article is one of the most absurd things I've ever read. It's like a bad movie of small town and judicial corruption, with a little bit of suspected adultery sprinkled in
Under Kansas law, magistrate judges have only three eligibility requirements: be a resident of the county where they preside, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and either be a lawyer admitted to practice in the state or able to pass an examination given by the Kansas Supreme Court to become certified within 18 months. Viar is one of 85 magistrate judges in Kansas. They are paid $76,000 to more than $100,000 a year. Kansas magistrate judges don’t have the full power and authority of full state district court judges, but they do wield significant influence over the criminal justice system. They can sign search warrants within their jurisdictions, such as the Marion County case.
-
It was the talk of the rural judge scene. Not too many judges don't think she will keep her job. Nor sbhould she because that was stupid
-
So what's the basic time line here?
1. Business owner has shady past
2. Reporter uncovers it (maybe through illegal means?)
3. Writes about it.
4. Business owner prompts local law enforcement to pursue a search warrant for the reporters devices
5. Law enforcement get local judge to sign off on warrant
6. Police seize equipment, but relinquish custody after newspaper layers up.
7. Kobach says nothing to see here
-
From what I’ve read, that’s close to it, except I don’t think they ever actually ran their story about the drunk lady. Instead they called the cops to inform them that drunk lady was operating on someone else’s liquor license after having dui’s.
-
This whole thing is ridiculous. They claim a false attestation as to the purpose of the records search as the reason for the warrant. I've literally done this hundreds (thousands?) of times to search public records. That is a thin reed to base seizing property on. It's shameful, really.
-
MIR mentioned suspected adultery, was the police chief banging the lady with the (allegedly) illegal liquor license?
-

Any alleged adultery is hardly the point, but I do understand why that could make the story more salacious.
-
Are we talking a DUI threeway between judge, cop, and the restaurant lady?
Freaks down in Marion.

Try THAT in a small town.

Well I'm trying to understand what would motivate the police to receive a tip that the business owner was potentially breaking the law and then choose to raid the offices of the newspaper instead of investigating the tip about illegal activity. Don't think the newspaper reporter was anticipating a raid or they probably wouldn't have contacted the police. Maybe they knew the outcome and were baiting the police into it?

There was no rough ridin' tip. There's no way to illegally obtain public records. And yes, they were baiting the cops, this wasn't their first issue with them.

The tip meaning, when the newspaper folks contacted the police. I'll read the article if you (or KK) post the damn thing.
Makes a lot of sense tho if the police chief is sticking it to the magistrate.

yeah, it was a public record and you have to check some box that states what purposes you can use the record. and yes, they wanted to get raided because now that county will be paying them a bag

I'm confused by this. The store owner who kicked them out of the store had a DUI and no driver's license. And the magistrate had 2 DUIs? Was the sheriff doing something wrong too that he was trying to cover up?
