so...had it for lunch today and then had it again for dinner. have tried six dif meats total. al pastor, asada, chik, beef, chile verde and chorizo. thoughts from fav to least fav...

chile verde- what can i say that hasn't been said already? nothing probably. just amazing.
chorizo- was slightly surprised how much i liked it. chorizo? that's what she said.
al pastor- of course you are sir. nice to meat you. v, v, good.
asada- solid if not spectacular.
beef- really good.
chik- prob the worst. chik was kinda dry. kinda bland. still great. will try again and report back. bad batch?

salsa bar area- just fantastic...

four salsas-
mild-dark red mole sauce i guess. dunno. great.
salsa- salsa stuff for tortillas. good.
verde- v good.
hot red- amazing.

limes, cucumbers, radishes- standard in taste.

i didn't care for tinga the one time i had it either, but not trying it again at la hacienda (located in manhattan ks just off anderson street in the village west shopping center) really isn't an option for me. will report back thoughts when i try it.

if you think of the vampire weekend song when seeing it and don't get one it's bad luck.  that's an ancient mexican curse from back when columbus founded the country.

it's weird to be slapped in the face with how provincial manhattan/omaha is.

more or less, not so milky as you might think.  a little bit chalky.  if it's really sweet it sucks, less sweet it can be good.  it's a completely different thing in spain (but still sweet and milky)

either/or. i always just go in because it doesn't take long for them to make the food and you can browse the grocery store merchandise while waiting. the chile verde tacos w/ a tiny bit of lime juice squeezed on a little of the hot salsa is the best food dish in mhk.

Chile verde tacos?  I was kind of rushed when I ordered (the meats are along the bottom of the menu ad I didn't notice them at first) which meat do you get with those?  Also, can I go tomorow with your kids and trick them into eating brain tacos?

its just pulled pork that's has maybe been marinated in green sauce and has def been sitting in some. they also have red. my total of seven days spent in new Mexico tells me that having red and green versions of dishes is fairly common.

Chile verde > chile rojo.  Spicier and more flavorful.  Overall, very good and very reasonably priced.  Like 4 tacos and a Jarritos soda for $7 + plus tax reasonably price.  I could have gotten by on just 3 tacos for sure.  Good stuff.

My god though, if you are one of the cilantro hating retards, do not go there. Certainly don't get the tacos.  They have some awesome cilantro on their tacos.

I went once today already too.  The girl I was with as able to confirm that the burritos are good too. I'm still stuck on tacos, but for $4, the burrito is a great deal.  We need to have a talk with these people about raising their prices so they will be able stay in business longer.

The manhattan one is a general partnership of 3 people and doesn't appear to include any operations other than the manhattan location. It was established in march 2010 however so they may have expanded. The 2 non-mhk'rs though are from council grove, at least back in 2010.

ok, from my research it appears like la hacienda is the mexican restaurant equivalent to the last name of smith. the "it's a chain" myth is now debunked. shocking that super white omaha suburb resident steve dave jumped at the chance to vilify a couple of small town kansas underdogs trying to make something of themselves by opening a restaurant and serving food from the heart.

they also have this red sauce stuff, onions, peppers, etc.  i think they call it "salsa"?  put it on your tacos, you'll love it!

yeah, this is where I always go for authentic mexican.  you can get fantastic real mexican food like tongue and brain tacos.  not poser stuff.  Oh, yes, I'll have the car-ni-tas taco combo with chips and sal-sa and a coke in a glass bottle.  thanks.  like I was saying, this place is the only place I'll go.  carnitas is mexican for pork btw.  mexican word from old mexico.

rough ridin' gringos killing the real crap.

Click that link and read the reviews. The middle one from WESTMORELAND, KS hated it. She called it the "worst Mexican joint we've ever been to." She is from frickin' Westmoreland, how many other Mexican joints has she been to?

I'll definitely go again.

Have we talked about the beans in this thread?  If so, too bad.  The beans were very good.  MBP got a quesadilla with chicken for under three dollars.  This thing was stout, too.  HOWEVER!  The tortillas weren't really my cup of tea.  Kind of rubbery?  Is that a way to describe tortillas?  Anyhow, overwhelmed by all of it.

And I'll reecho what others have said, the "store" part is a real trip.  Need some boots?  Sure, they're right over there next to the terrifying mannequins and our shelfs of religious icons that are also for sale.

Can confirm the deliciousness of La Hacienda. All tacos (including tongue) are delicious, gordita is fantastic. Don't miss out on the assorted snacks and candies sold by the store.

G-Dubs/El Cazador: Respected by all. A founding father of Manhattan's formidable Mexican food republic.
TJ/The Chef: Controversial for some, beloved by others. Also, needed a breakfast place.
Teddy/Olive Garden: New kid on the block (comparatively). Loved by people who kill animals.
Honest Abe/La Hacienda: A short run (thus far), but enduring. Presided over a tough land (the South/Village Plaza), will never be forgotten no matter what.

Not pictured: Tad's Tropical Sno (more of a first lady Eleanor Roosevelt-type), Taco Hut (Ronald Reagan--beloved by one side only), Calico Inn (Winston Churchill--great, but from outside the area), Taco Luche (Barack Obama--lots of fans, too new to judge),  Harry's (King George), Patio (never been), any Italian place (James Polk--nobody cares), Vista (Jimmy Carter--1970s, has done some good things, but mostly gross)

Taco Tinga to open in former Dolci & Joe’S

WICHITA — Diners soon will once again be able to find tacos at 3425 East Douglas.

That was Taco Tico’s home years ago before Breezy’s and then Dolci & Joe’s opened there.

Now, Angel Varela and M.M. Karim are opening Taco Tinga there.

Varela used to own the La Hacienda grocery at 31st and Hillside and the La Picosa restaurant within it.

His new restaurant will be similar to a Chipotle Mexican Grill in that customers will walk in and select ingredients from a counter featuring various fillings for tacos, burritos, sandwiches and quesadillas.

Unlike Chipotle, there will be some ready-made items as well, such as chili rellenos and enchiladas.

Initially, Taco Tinga will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Later, breakfast will be available, too.

The restaurant opens Aug. 1.

I like looking at the food section and all the Mexicany versions of food.  I'll be all "hey look Mexican Oreos!  Hey look!  Mexican Chips Ahoy!...Look!  Mexican Cholula!"

I like the boots. I had pin worms once when i was a kid.  :barf:

I also ate at La Hacienda yesterday and it was delicious.  4 tacos (3 pastor, 1 lengue) and some chips and salsa for me with a grapefruit jarrisco.  Tied for best mex i've had in years.  Place it is tied with is called "El Jarrisco" and is only like 3 blocks away from my house.

It's 2012, Daris.  I shouldn't have to go to a restaurant and drink soda out of a can/glass bottle.

Have you been to the goodcent's near Aggieville and seen that amazing 5,000ish flavor soda fountain there?  so cool.

This is exactly what La Hacienda wants me to do. I refuse to go to an establishment that gives a fast pass to someone just because they share the same ethnicity. If for some reason I end up eating there, like their fantastic tacos, I at least want a fountain drink or some complimentary cowboy boots to occupy my time.

Pro-tip: La Fiesta is absolute garbage and the worst mexican restaurant in mhk.

If I was a girl and some bad person tried to pass off a trip to La Fiesta as a date, I'd spit in his face.  A completely ordinary, awful mexican restaurant.

At least La Hacienda is interesting, if nothing else.  FWIW, I wouldn't take a date to any mexican restaurant except Lucha/Bolos in mhk.

Has anyone tried the catfish and milkshake place mentioned on page 1 yet?

Or would anyone like to try it with 'meister sometime soon?

So manbearpig and I pak'd really hard last night and decided to go to the chef for a late breakfast today.  We were seated at the counter and they asked manbearpig to move down one seat so that Todd could sit between us to film something.  Todd was a nice guy, asked where we were from, then said he used to live in KC a long time ago and his wife was from there.  He also was talking about the guy in the kitchen who was wearing a Chiefs hat and how he must be a pretty hardcore Chiefs fan to still be supporting them.  Talked about how the quarterbacks in this year's draft won't save the Chiefs.  Anyway, Todd was there to film a spot for the 'Cats game on ABC tomorrow.  Should air during the game and may feature a couple of goEMAWers.  Todd really enjoyed the chicken fried steak.

I really about lost it when he said he used to live in KC.  It's like yeah, I'm a Chiefs fan.  I know who you are more because of that than because of ESPN.  But he seems like a really nice, down to earth guy.  Also, The Chef owners were really really excited about ESPN being in there filming for the second time in a month.

Wanted to bury it in here so that the initial reaction from people was "JFC, 8man and daris really won't let this rough ridin' La Hacienda thing go, will they?"

Also, my actual favorite MHK restaurant is The Chef.

The man said "even if we're closed, call me.  I can be open in 30 minutes (it takes 20 minutes to heat up the oil)".  Seemed like a very nice guy.  I wish there had been more seasoning on the catfish, but it was still very good.  Do not have food poisoning yet.

Also, the name of the restaurant is "catfish-n-stuff", for future reference.
