“We’re a marked team but we’re still under the radar,” senior forward Thomas Gipson said Thursday. “Since I’ve been here, we don’t get the respect we deserve. We have to play with that chip on our shoulder just like the other three years I’ve been here.”

16. Kansas State (Reseed 4; previous seed: 9)
Kansas State did what Virginia couldn't do in its 50-43 win over UMBC on Sunday, the ugliest game of the weekend. The Wildcats finished 1-for-12 from the 3-point line and committed 18 turnovers. Yes, they won without Claws, but UMBC failed to score in a significant, 10-minute stretch in the second half and Kansas State could not capitalize.
But the Wildcats dominated Creighton in the opening round, also without Wade, who is dealing with a foot injury. If Kansas State duplicates Sunday's effort, however, when it faces Kentucky in the Sweet 16, oscar Weber's team will lose by 20-plus.

I'm glad we're on the list.

So many “howevers” in there.
-
However, without Wade and maybe even with him, however, we clearly are the worst team in the S16. I’m just glad we’re here. It’s been a fun ride.

Monday Howevers? :Wha:
We're better than Nevada and Loyola. Dean is playing btw.

16. Kansas State
Why they’re headed to the Final Four: They’re not headed to the Final Four. No team ever got the chance to play a 16-seed in a second-round game, and the Wildcats almost blew it. They might have a shot at Kentucky if Claws is able to play, and if Kentucky is freaked by the stage, but it’s tough to see K-State winning two more.
Why they'll go home: Because that's where teams go when the season is over. It’s been a good ride, though.
I sense a pattern
-
Keeping it close with UMBC to lull the Kentucky Cats asleep will probably go down as Weber’s most genius coaching move this decade.

I enjoyed the snark and understand why we're #16 but that guy is an idiot. If we have a shot against Kentucky, we certainly will in the E8 game as well.

Right, hell, if somehow we go all the way to the 'ship this game could literally be the toughest team we play, no way Loyola/Nevada is a tougher game than Kentucky.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. The best cow dog we ever had was ugly and off in the head. So cats ain't beautiful or quite right in the execution department, we are in the sweet 16 and will, will, beat Kentucky to get in the elite 8. It will be the most beautiful ugly win ever.
-

I agree that it was ugly, but great defense often has this effect.
Defense is half of the game; we are playing excellent on that half.
If Wade comes back, I think we are dancing to San Antonio.
-
who is our best win against this year? @OSU? Texas? Creighton?
why should i believe we can beat Kentucky?
-

Without Wade, we probably won't. But Kentucky is a 5 seed for a reason.
-
Kentucky lost like ten games in a row this year.
-
Kentucky has more talent and a better coach than we do. We need them to not play up to their potential to win.
-
Kentucky lost like ten games in a row this year.
in the $ec
kentucky is terrible
-
Kentucky would win it all every year if they could consistently play up to their potential. That just tends to be a very hard thing to do.
-
Our best player is injured.

What's bothering me about the coverage of that game, everyone keeps talking about how it was the worst game of the tournament. However the Syracuse/Michigan State game was pretty much the very same damn game without the defensive effort. That game was two teams holding the ball for 25 seconds then either getting fouled or putting up a bad shot. The last 30 seconds of that game was one of the worst finishes to a game I've ever seen, yet the media doesn't care. I'm not one of those the media hates us guys, but the reason for us getting that criticism but not Syracuse is absolutely because of the brand.
Anyway, several media members have the same take as PIPE, if they only knew.

There is a big difference in narrative if the underdog wins the ugly game.

DeCourcy put Syracuse at #15 fwiw
-
Not to mention we played well against Creighton. Not like we've crap showed up the entire tournament. We had a bad game and won. BFD
-
the syracuse-msu game was in no way similar to ours
-
great offensive and poor defensive game = great game, well played by both teams
great defensive and poor offensive game = ugly game, both teams played like crap
-
the syracuse-msu game was in no way similar to ours
You're right. The KSU/UMBC game was played at a much quicker pace, had a significantly higher eFG% and didn't feature 47 rough ridin' free throws. So like I said, the MSU/SU game featured them passing the ball for 25 seconds before they chucked up a shot or got fouled.
Thanks for the clarification.
-
ya, that offense last night was as close to LHC Bill Snyder’s football offense that a basketball offense can be.
it looked like oscar was playing not to lose and wanted to play as few possessions as possible
-
And yet there were three games that round with fewer possessions, no one said boo about Tennessee/Loyola and that had the pace of a game with a 45 second shot clock, like Chi said, the underdog won that game so it wasn't the most boring game played of all time.
-
I'm sure this is no surprise to anyone paying attention but KSU/UMBC was played at a quicker pace than UVA/UMBC.
-
Any "sports" writer who doesn't have Loyola Chicago 16 and Syracuse 15 is a fucktard.
-

it’s pretty obvious that you’re the only person who has paid attention to anything, ever

Are you kind of the "watch the world burn" type? Check out Kansas State.
Much like Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight," you just want to watch everyone's bracket go up in flames. You're not a guy with a plan. You're more like a dog chasing a car -- you wouldn't know what to do with one if you caught it. Kansas State makes all the sense in this cold world, then. The Wildcats just sent Cinderella candidate UMBC home in one of the ugliest games of basketball in recent memory. A Kansas State run to San Antonio would mean more of that kind of basketball for a couple more weeks, torching every bracket and eyeball along the way.
-
 I kind of figured we’d be the villains of the tournament after sending UMBC home.
-
It's like not a single person watched the Creighton game.
-
My "Take"
If anyone but oscar was our coach they'd be talking about the grinders from KSU that won 2 games without their leading scorer. But the media doesn't like/respect/care about oscar so we get this. Which is fine, I just like winning.
-
They’re not talking highly about KSU because we’re not a blue blood but we’re not a Cinderella either. Just a boring old 9 seed from a good conference winning boring games.
When Frank made it to the FF with South Carolina, they could at least talk about how historic it was for that program, how it was in the gutter pre-Frank etc etc. We don’t have anything like that. We’re in the tournament fairly often, win a game occasionally, and have a decent number of Sweet 16s already under our belt.
-
So you disagree with my "Take"?
-
Our D has been pretty amazing. Only the Cats and the 1-seeds have played a 16 and an 8/9 (well, except for Virginia, ha). In those first two rounds, here's how they compare in points allowed....
Xavier: 79
Virginia: 74
KU: 69.5
Villanova: 59.5
KSU Cats: 51
Obviously points per possession would be a better metric but I couldn’t easily find those stats offhand.

Weber needs to drop some F Bombs in front of the camera, then the media will notice.

Some sexy af stats going on itt rn

Yea, pretty much. I don't think anyone actively dislikes Weber outside of Manhattan and wherever Illinois is.

No team benefitted more from UMBC's win, as Kansas State had to beat only an 8-seed and a 16-seed to reach the Sweet 16. That is unprecedented, thanks to the UMBC upset of Virginia.
Really? You really don’t think anyone has ever beaten an 8 seed and 16 seed to reach the Sweet 16? Really?

I think he meant specifically for a 9 seed but I dunno
-
He must have, but that seems weirdly specific to talk about what’s unprecedented. Has a 7 seed ever beaten a 10 and 15? I don’t really know but the path would theoretically be easier.
-
Yeah, that's what he meant, but you would think someone trained as a lawyer is some big shot school like Duke and not a diploma mill like KU was be more precise with his words.
-
Yeah... Seems a bit extraneous to mention all the unprecedented things that happen as a direct consequence of the original unprecedented thing. Like if Kentucky beats us then yes it will be unprecedented that a 5 seed made the E8 by beating a 9 seed who had just previously beaten a 16 seed and while that's technically accurate its like who cares

538 says 7% we win it all. we need to beat AA with AKo

Yeah if that’s the standard I don’t think you have any locks outside maybe the top 5 right now. Plus even if we lose out we’re a bubble team at worst I think. We’ve definitely got in with worse resumes.

What precisely should he have said? They kicked the crap out of us in the previous game. Would you rather he say, "guys I don't care if these guys are in first place, we beat their ass once and I know you'll do it again, so LFG!"

It’s a great quote if he wins and he looks like an ass if they lose. To me it’s just kind of weird to make it about the other team. Honestly if I hear a coach say that I’m thinking, wait, is he assuming we were previously thinking that we are a worse team than these guys?
I think it would be better to make it about UT’s recent success against ranked opponents at home, but yeah I’m not gonna mince words but I will lol when they blow up in your face (especially when I assume Smart went out after the game and said we played a really good team today, blah blah blah).

The players likely didn't think anything because they've heard something like that from coaches, a lot.

i’m not sure why there’s a focus on this quote, maybe some people are still of the belief that shaka is a good coach?

What's good about the Big 12: Watchability with a capital W. The Big 12 was ranked second overall among our top conferences for providing pure spectating pleasure. Is that high ranking linked in part to the edge-of-your-seat thrills provided by Kansas trying to extend its amazing streak? Absolutely, and this year about half the league is in on the title chase along with the Jayhawks. It makes for good viewing.
Big 12 Rankings
Top/Bottom Strength 3rd
NCAA Title Likelihood 4th
Star Players Factor T-3rd
Overall Watchability 2nd
What's bad about the Big 12: Maybe this gets back to what's good about the league and that whole competitive title chase thing, but there's no clear favorite and thus no promising candidate to win a national title. The Big 12 placed a middling fourth in our polling for NCAA title likelihood, and that sounds about right. KU very well might keep the streak going, but the short-handed Jayhawks aren't packing the same punch they usually do. Texas Tech is phenomenal on D but iffy on offense. Iowa State has been hot and cold. -- John Gasaway

'Cats need to step up the Nov & Dec 2019 portion of next season's schedule. This season's portion was relatively lame and hurt when viewed by national analysts.

let's wait until 2022 or 2023 to step up our schedule, because we are going to be kind of sucky next year.

Jon Sundvold on 810 yesterday was asked about the bracket and seedings. He said he normally doesn't comment on the committee's work, but wondered how KU got slotted in Kansas City in light of their conference and overall record--he sounded like KU got some favorable treatment there. He also commented on an underseeded Cincinnati being placed in Columbus, and thought the likelihood of them playing Tennessee early in the tourney was a little unfair to Tennessee. He thought that higher sided teams would be more fairly treated if KU and Cincinnati tourney locations were swapped.

Our Lon is almost in the F4
5. Lon Kruger, Oklahoma Sooners -- Kruger was a two-time Big Eight player of the year as a point guard at Kansas State (1973 and 1974) and led the Wildcats to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances during his collegiate career. He was a ninth-round pick of the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA draft (Kruger also tried out with the Detroit Pistons) and played professionally in Israel. He also played a season of minor league baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals organization and was invited to training camp with the Dallas Cowboys as a quarterback.

I know we lost 3 amazing players, but second to last? That hurts.
-
I know teams have been picked first and finished last (see our Baseball team in 2014), but has a team that won a regular season conference title ever been picked next-to-last or last the next year?
-
even i am surprised
-
You have to pick Kansas first until someone else knocks them off two years in a row.
-
We should have been picked either fourth or fifth (behind Texas) in that poll. There's some real inconsistent logic happening here.

Pretty significant divide between projected non-wednesday and wednesday teams.

I mean no one is going to have an easy time ranking a first time head coach with an entirely new team. I have no reason to disagree with wherever anyone ranks us out of 10.
-
David N’Guessan being a key newcomer as well as a key loss is very impressive

Curious. You don’t think Rothstein has some insider information about N’guessan? Like maybe he’s already portaling again? He’s not listed as a starter or a bench player.

When we win our preseason tournament these media types will take note

Big12 seems to be full of enough teams that are expected to be really good. If we just go smash taints for like a 2 week stretch at the front end of conf play, we will be fine.
