Title: Trump's Wall

A nation without borders is not a nation at all. We must have a wall.

I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me —and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.

If I call it 'Trump,' then I'm going to have to do it really nice wall. Right? I'm not going to call it Trump -- I'm not going to call it Trump! But I have to make it nice because someday somebody will say: 'We're going to call it the Trump Wall, because boy does it work good and doesn't it look beautiful.' So we're going to build a beautiful wall.

You look at the Great Wall of China, that was built 2,500 years ago — it's 13,000 miles. And we're really talking about something a little more than 1,000 miles. So it is something that can be absolutely done — not done at tremendous cost.

Mexico must pay for the wall and, until they do, the United States will, among other things: impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages; increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards – of which we issue about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year (a major source of visa overstays); increase fees on all NAFTA worker visas from Mexico (another major source of overstays); and increase fees at ports of entry to the United States from Mexico [Tariffs and foreign aid cuts are also options].  We will not be taken advantage of anymore.

I must admit that the idea of a president promising to build some giant, multi billion dollar world wonder is something I could get behind.

First candidate that is like "We're gonna carve a bigger mount rushmore but its gonna be sports figures and be located in the rocky mountains" or something similar gets my vote.

tunnels can be attractive, but they are hidden from all but those using them.  i would rather build above ground features that can become beloved landmarks and features of the landscape.  gates, towers and whatnot.

Bannon asked Donald Trump Jr. what the two or three things that his father would prioritize his first 100 days in office if elected president.

“A big part of that is going to be cutting the waste. Cutting bureaucracy and that nonsense. Starting to work on actually balancing a budget. Really dealing with the immigration issue, getting the wall started –”

“Getting the wall started in the first hundred days?” Bannon asked.

“I would say the process of that would start in the first hundred days,” Trump said.

“You’re saying when it comes to the wall, you’re seeing the initiation as the legislation, the financing of that, in the first hundred days,” Bannon said.

“A hundred percent."

There's walls around every cookie cutter, mcmansion subdivision in Arizona. And each individual house has its own stucco fence. I think I finally understand.

unless he repeals the esa, they'd have to put in wildlife gates and such.  lots of mitigation.

I don't think you can completely mitigate having a wall.  It's better for wildlife if there were no wall as opposed to a really rough ridin' fancy wildlife friendly wall.

yeah, you can't.  but the esa doesn't require that.  they just have to do a ton of crap, a lot of which has no value, and then once you've spent enough money, you can finally go ahead.  but there would certainly be a lot of stuff built in to allow some wildlife (the protected ones) to cross the wall.

This wall, where the most illegals try to cross, will be maybe a 100 feet high. In other areas where the illegals don't try to cross, it'll be more like a picket fence. It will be an amazing wall/fence, to clarify any earlier mentions I made of a fence. But make no mistake about it, it will be a glorious wall.

the idea that he has little interest in policy and in the details of management is abundantly supported.  if his vice president would not be the effective president, then someone else (or multiple someones) certainly would be.  that's not to say that he wouldn't wander around randomly overriding his staff and colleagues at inopportune times.

to refocus the discussion, there's no evidence that trump has any particular interest in public lands policy, so the idea that he'd pay attention to that particular arena is far-fetched at best.

Sadly but not surprisingly his idiot supporters believe it too.  I noticed there were some FINISH THE WALL banners at his rally in El Paso the other night.  In about 3 months Trump will claim that a 40 foot WALL has already been built around the entire continental US.

So it sounds like Dictator Trump is going to declare a national emergency to build a wall. The lack of a wall, for some reason, wasn't emergency worthy for the previous 174 years that this border existed.

Trying to think when 1800 people at time were trying to cross the border at non points of entry.

Just sad to think LibDerp Nation whose leaders at one time were all about border security, now want a border free-for-all.

Hold on Trey I’m going to put links to all the fantastic comprehensive immigration reform the Dems have done when they’ve controlled one if not both houses of Congress including the period when Barry “the deporter n chief” Obama occupied both a Senate seat and then Oval Office that wasn’t insta-amnesty or other stupid crap, see below:

The bollards, or “slats,” as he prefers to call them, should be painted “flat black,” a dark hue that would absorb heat in the summer, making the metal too hot for climbers to scale, Trump has recently told White House aides, Homeland Security officials and military engineers.
...
Trump has demanded Department of Homeland Security officials come to the White House on short notice to discuss wall construction and on several occasions woke former secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to discuss the project in the early morning
...
Trump often brought up the construction of the barrier at unrelated meetings, and aides learned to bring prep books — and even sketches — to address his questions.
...
Trump frequently delved into the minutiae of contracts and suggested that some of his friends in New York would have ideas on how to build it faster
...
Approved barrier designs include a flat-panel anti-climbing surface that has been field-tested, but the president doesn’t like the way it looks either, arguing that sharp spikes would appear more intimidating.

Trump told one group of aides that the metal points would cut the hands of climbers and function as a more effective deterrent.

Trump immediately brought up Fisher, a company that sued the U.S. government last month after the Army Corps did not accept its bid to install barriers along the southern border
...
Trump likes Fisher because he had seen him on television advocating for his version of the barrier: “He’s been very aggressive on TV,”
...
grumbling to aides that the Army Corps contracting process is holding back his ambitions. At the White House meeting Thursday, he said he doesn’t like the current design for the wall’s gates, suggesting that instead of the hydraulic sliding gate design, the Army Corps should consider an alternative, according to an administration official: “Why not French doors?” the president asked.
