What is the podcast, WW?

BBC OS

So it’s embedded video I’m assuming? Have you checked the source to see if there is a direct link?

Absolutely fascinating.  Once you kill the process and it’s dumped from memory it’s like it was never there.  X-post with the crypto thread but it belongs here.

Very cool project

https://theintercept.com/2017/12/22/snowdens-new-app-uses-your-smartphone-to-physically-guard-your-laptop/

That is cool.

It would be nice if that functionality could be incorporated into the laptop itself.

Should probably go in the computer thread because it’s hardware related but it’s being fixed temporarily with a software fix.  Anyway a really interesting article on a new security flaw in Intel chips.  This one excerpt is crazy if you know anything about “the cloud” or virtualization.  :sdeek:

And on multi-user machines, like the servers run by Google Cloud Services or Amazon Web Services, it could even allow hackers to break out of one user's process, and instead snoop on other processes running on the same shared server.

Intel dominates the chip market, when I say dominate they have about 80% of the entire industry.  Pretty much every single computer on the entire market that you can turn on has this issue.  Jesus.

Those patches are supposed to have 5-30% performance hit.  Any computer or server not used to just surf the internet lightly will see a hit.

oh man a 5% performance hit, yikes
no one knows the extent to how this will impact post patch performance but don’t let that stop your sky from falling

Right, you have no idea how badly it’s probably going to be.

I can’t wait to try this out when they release it

https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/256423-microsoft-set-release-quantum-computing-programming-language

This article makes reference to this post. Could also go in the crypto thread because of the implications that apply to mining. Quantum computing is so fascinating to me and makes hyper-threading look like a kindergartners project. The basic security that we can enjoy on the internet is at risk because of this. Granted delayed mainstream use of it would allow a buffer for when consumers and hackers get their hands on it probably. The cost of cooling into the sub 100 kelvin range almost guarantees that research and large corporations would only be able to apply it for a good amount of time.  :nerd:

Is it failing when it tries to update or do you just want to get a virus?  Also I have Windows, MacOS, and Linux machines so I can run anything :gocho:
