TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Kansas State Football => Topic started by: greghardin on October 10, 2016, 10:24:53 PM

Hello everyone,
Apologies for hijacking the football thread, but where else am I going to find a higher concentration of passionate K-State fans?
I'm an ex-Hallmark illustrator and this afternoon I launched a Kickstarter campaign for a K-State book I wrote and illustrated. It's officially licensed with K-State; they were involved every step of the way. However, I'm just one guy doing this and so I put the project on Kickstarter to raise printing costs.
Here's some images from the book. The football page has been made into a poster and the basketball, Anderson Hall and Wheat Field images are also from the book.
Here's the Kickstarter link! http://kck.st/2dX0xyW I can see what site referred people who pledge, and if enough goEMAW-ers contribute, I’ll be sure to give goEMAW.com a shout out on the book’s dedication page!
Thanks a ton for your support!
Greg

This is interesting. Thanks, Greg :kstatriot:
You should add a level that adds a custom commissioned illustration of the donors choosing.
Are you allowed to talk about what went in to licensing? How much money goes to the school vs to you? Did they demand cash licensing fees or is it a percentage of sales?
Are you willing to crowdsource the content for your next literary work?
Would you like to see some of the powercats that we and our relations have drawn?

Looks great!

The plot is trash, no depth to Willie at all. Just different things he will do/does. People already have Dr. Sues books for their kids, and they feature plenty of cats ......now if you recreated a Dr. Sues book with Willie

Ha--yes, I'm a KU grad, and yes I did a similar book for KU last year. However, my parents, brother, grandfather and many cousins went to K-State. I have a lot of history with K-State obviously, and in fact there used to be a scholarship at K-State in the name of my uncle who I'm named after. It might still be there, I'm not sure.
I knew going into this project that I would take heat from both K-State people AND KU people. I also know goEMAW and knew you'd see I went to KU in no time flat. I was a little trepidacious coming back to this post this morning. However, I won K-State over to work on this project and I know they're very excited about it. I gave the book the same full-scale effort I gave the KU book.
I'll also tell you that I'll never do a Missouri book.
But yeah, it was cool--I had access to the sports facilities to take photos and got the full K-State experience throughout the making of the book. And holy crap, Call Hall ice cream? You've got to be kidding me. Maybe the best ice cream I've ever had! I was so impressed I gave it a page in the book!
I could have done any school after the KU book. I chose to do K-State for my family, friends, and fellow Kansans.
Thanks everyone!
Greg

Worked in the Licensing Studio at Hallmark for a couple years. Licensing meaning I worked with properties from Disney, Dreamworks, Marvel, DC, Pixar, Peanuts, Cartoon Network, the NFL, etc. I illustrated, designed and worked with those properties. I've continued to work with many of them since leaving Hallmark.

Obviously you don't take "Family" very seriously.

Hi Greg, have you seen this book?
One thing I don't like about it. Willie always "takes time" to do things that I consider to be part of his job, like he's going out of his way to be friendly/engaging. It's like "hey bad person, that's your job, you do it and you do it graciously."

Yep. My book is quite different.
-
Great idea, Greg. And because of the all campus construction you're going to have to publish a new edition every year!
I'm excited about the possibility of a spin-off book where "Willie Goes to NBAF" and contracts a cross strain of a rare bovine disease that horribly disfigures him (TM).

That actually caused me a TON of problems. Like in the superhero flyover shot, my reference had where the new Seaton Hall building is going. But at the time it was just a hole in the ground. So I actually had to draw it in based on architectural renderings. So currently there is a building in that illustration that will be only fully be there later in 2017.
Also Memorial Stadium--when I took my reference it was all being renovated. So I had to do that illustration in phases too.

how hard was it for you in your other book to encapsulate the beauty of the hill at ku?

I also know goEMAW...

Greg should have announced the book right after we won the Titletown.
How about it Greg? Is title town a central theme of this work of children's literature?
-
Also, I know you're probably not seeking feedback on your other work, but something caught my eye.

Is this diminutive jayhawk aware that sunflowers don't release any sort of scent to attract pollinators and instead rely on their bright colors?
Or, was the intention to suggest that this little guy might be having some sort of a stroke?
That seems like some pretty mature themes for a childrens' book, Gregg.
-
"The greatest college town you'll ever know."
I'm sorry, but I can't support trying to pollute children's fragile minds with such lies.

I am sure that Greg must have not realized that KU grads are just a bunch of poors, so as a result he took a bath on that book. Now, an older and wiser Greg has determined he should chase the crowd with :kstategrad:

My suggestion to Greg would be to add a disclaimer saying that the book is just a tribute and in no way can attempt to portray the gloriousness of the hill.

And sunflowers face the sun, dork! :Carl:
-
I'm kind of embarrassed to just now be realizing it, but I'm pretty sure that page was intended to be satire.
Calling Lawrence the greatest college town obviously should have tipped me off, but the smelling of backward facing sunflowers I think is intended to complete the motif.
I admit it's very well done, but I'm not sure the children will pick up on it. I would suggest in later editions going with something like:
In "awesome" Lawrence, Kansas, the greatest college town you'll ever get to know...NOT! (or) ON OPPOSITE DAY!

If it helps you, know that money goes to K-State with every book you buy.
I truly did make this book for the K-State community, and having lived on both sides of the fanbase I get the passion.
K-State worked with me on this book the entire time. I'm as proud of this book as I am the KU book, and I gave it as much love and hard work. I think it kicks ass that I've gotten the chance to make Kansas' major universities look as good as I can make them.
Thanks!

Greg, I think you probably picked the wrong place to come soliciting for kickstarter funds.
I knew going into this that I was going to experience all of this. But I wanted to make the book. So now's the moment I've been waiting for
The Kickstarter funding truly does matter though. I don't have corporate financial backing. I certainly don't expect to get rich off of this. I do need to raise those printing funds on Kickstarter for the book to exist.

Uh, hey what's happening with Willies right leg here? Seems like something you might want to fix before printing...
This is oblivious reference to our starting QB. But seriously, it's the knee not the leg.
Pretty obvious hyperextension of the knee.

Another failed business realizes you cannot market to ku grads because poors.

greghardin, are there any plans currently to adapt this book into a major motion picture? I have a first draft screenplay I'd like you to take a look at.
LOL---this is what I meant by saying "I know goEMAW" I catch up on the board sometimes, lots of fun stuff
Here's a taste:
Willie doesn't want to go to college. He wants to pursue his dream of year round farming in California's Great Central Valley. However at his father's behest he agrees to one year at K-State. He has a miserable first couple of weeks until reluctantly joining the soil judging team, "Essential Soils", at the suggestion of his father. After a series of misadventures Willie brings the soil judging team together with his unique talent and innovative judging style and leads the team to the multiplesoil judging national championships.

That's a rough ridin' knee hernia if I've ever seen one.

I think that's the knee injury Teddy Bridgewater had :sdeek:

In year three he should go up against someone like Fresno State who try to turn him over to judge for their team in California and Willie is really conflicted but decided to stay with KSU but then loses the competition. But during his senior year he makes it back and beats those fools!

It just looks like his lower right leg is a lot wider than the knee joint is and it looks like they don't match up. JMHO :dunno:

I think the line for the calf muscle is just too sharp and a little too high up on the leg. It makes it look like his knee is bending backwards.

how hard was it for you in your other book to encapsulate the beauty of the hill at ku?
My suggestion to Greg would be to add a disclaimer saying that the book is just a tribute and in no way can attempt to portray the gloriousness of the hill.
I actually think he did a pretty good job with the hill in his Jayhawk book. Well done greg.

Not only concerned about that obvious knee hernia, are we sure he is going to keep a foot inbounds? maybe have the ball closer to his hands and or scoot him back a yard or so. like knees endlines are tricky

Guys wouldn't the jumbotron be a live ball view? Like from the 20ish yard line assuming this isn't a bomb?

Thanks everybody for your thoughts in this thread. I’ve seen a few goEMAW-ers support the book and it’s much appreciated! If you like what you see here, please share the project with your friends and we’ll get there! The Kickstarter fundraising campaign ends on November 9! http://kck.st/2dX0xyW (http://kck.st/2dX0xyW)

Greg, what team/animal is our receiver outrunning in that pic?
From the orange color, maybe a beefy Donald Trump progeny?

I'll def. be backing this project...just forwarded it on to all of the K-State alums at my firm, awesome project!
-
Greg, what team/animal is our receiver outrunning in that pic?
Unofficially Texas. I just needed a color that jumped and didn't get buried in the detail.
If you'd like to see this project happen, please share the Kickstarter campaign link and spread the word. It's been a few days since the last pledge, hopefully we can get that turned around. There's 3 weeks left in the campaign and we're currently 37% funded. http://kck.st/2dX0xyW (http://kck.st/2dX0xyW)
Thanks, and many thanks to those of you who have pledged already!

Do we know if the thread will die on Nov. 9 as well, or just the kickstarter campaign?
I'll hang up and listen off air.

After much thought and deliberation, I've determined that the young Jayhawk was simply severely near sighted. Although mushroom trip cannot be discounted as option B.

Can't spell kickstarter without TSC

Howdy everyone,
First, thanks to the goEMAW folks who have pledged to the campaign!
Second, tomorrow there will be only 14 days left in the Kickstarter campaign and we still need almost double the amount of money pledged so far. Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, so if we don't raise the funds, the book won't be printed. Obviously, I hope that won't be the case, I'm really proud of this book and I'd love for K-State fans to be able to have it.
Many thanks for your consideration! http://kck.st/2dX0xyW (http://kck.st/2dX0xyW)

And sunflowers face the sun, dork! :Carl:
Is anyone else concerned that Greg worked hand in hand with KU on this book and there was no one there smart enough to catch these corrections? My 8 year old walked by and said, those sunflowers are backwards without even stopping. He just shook his head as he walked away.
How did we give these people the law and medical school?!?

Will _FAN be compensated for the OOD references?

We're down to our final week of fundraising, 7 days left! There's still 31% of the goal that needs to be raised before Kickstarter will release the funds. Every book you order helps us tick ever closer to that final number! Thanks to everyone from goEMAW who has made a pledge, and thanks to goEMAW for letting this thread continue! --Greg

4 days left in the campaign! We've jumped it up to 88% funded, need just a little more by Wednesday at 3 PM! http://kck.st/2dX0xyW (http://kck.st/2dX0xyW)

Greg has been great with updates.
Just a few minutes ago we hit 104% funding on the K-State book Kickstarter campaign! THANK YOU to everyone who pledged and helped make this project happen!
Anything we raise from here on out helps with the continuing expenses for this project and makes my life much easier, so please keep letting people know about the campaign until it ends at 2:57 PM on Wednesday!
You guys are awesome!!! Thanks again!
-Greg
Hi everyone!
The campaign for the "When I Grow Up, I Want To Be a K-State Wildcat" book ended this afternoon and we finished above the funding goal! That's great news and I want to thank everyone who pledged! I know many of you were also helping to share the project and bring in new backers, which was crucial in meeting the goal and you all deserve much praise!
So what's next? It takes 2 weeks for me to receive the funds from Kickstarter, however I hope to place the order for the books, posters and prints before then and get everything started.
I'll be in touch periodically over the coming weeks and months with updates on how everything is going. During that time I will also send out the Backer Report, which is where you'll be able to give me your mailing information, designate which art print you wanted (if that was an option in your reward tier) and also give me any other important information.
Thanks again everyone! I couldn't have done this without you!
---Greg
Can't wait Greg!
