Really close family friend/2nd dad etc is in the last stage of lung cancer.
anyone else gone through this?
-
of any kind? or just lung? Lots of family experience
Lost an uncle a few years ago, great guy, long battle. Have a 7 year old cousin with neuroblastoma, in his 3rd year, still battling. Sister in her 3rd year with Breast Cancer, she's way stronger than I think I'd be, she's still battling.
Cancer rough ridin' sucks, no doubt
-
no
-
Nope.
Sorry emaw friend.
-
My wife was diagnosed with metastatic thyroid cancer a couple of weeks ago. Prognosis is good, but we are still scared. She's actually handling it better than I am.
Lung cancer is nasty. Sorry to hear that, Cire. And, Shooter, I hope all goes well with you, too.
-
He was terminal when it was diagnosed 3 years ago. Responded really well to the initial chemo but it has turned bad quick. will know more on Monday but man, huge KITN.
Pan, that is a lot of stress, sounds like she will kick the balls out of it.
-
Man, sorry to hear about each of these. T&P's bros.
-
Great Rugger and EMAW brother in his early 40's just found out he has a glioblastoma (the worst primary brain tumor you can get). He is staying positive and and has a great attitude. I don't know how.
-
CF3 bait
-
Trim.
-
My best friend's little brother (30yrs old) has three days left. He is at home with his parents and surrounded by friends and family.
edit: I feel your pain Cire.
-
You're gonna need a mason jar. I saw EMAW ones at the fancy Dillon's on Rock Road the other day.
-
hope for the best Cire, Dobber, and Panj... and BF, after seeing long battles filled with never ending pain and bad news after bad news, I honestly think they're happier to go than continue the struggle
sucks, but.. EMAWs, 5 Hearts, Can't Lose

I saw his wife's posts getting a ton of likes, but didn't know exactly what was going on. Damnit. I hope to see you both at alumni weekend :frown:
My love and support to everyone who is dealing with this.

My father-in-law was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer a few years ago. We moved him in with us and took care of him for his last 9 months. Hospice is a great resource when the final days come. T's & P's guys.
-
Lost both grandfathers and an aunt to lung cancer in the last 10 years. Also lost my wife's mother a couple years ago to stage 3 cancer. Very difficult thing to endure. T's and P's to everyone dealing with it, past or present.
-

sdmom had this. it is a pretty easy operation and is one of the least deadly kinds of cancers or whatever. shouldn't need to even have followups very often after they remove it. hope it goes well.

Yeah, they say she's going to take radioiodine, and that's going to kill everything (supposedly). Then they'll monitor with blood tests to see if they killed it all.
The original tumor is already gone; she had surgery a few weeks ago. Every test we took before that was inconclusive for cancer. So, just to be safe, she had the surgery anyway. Turns out it was a good idea that we did because it was cancer and it had spread.
Anyway, it's scary and it sucks, and I feel for everyone in this thread. I know how it felt when they used the word cancer and my wife in the same sentence. I can only imagine what it would feel like for someone to hear that they have it, especially one that's more deadly than the one she has.
-
Grandma died from leukemia. Grandpa died from prostate cancer. Mom had breast cancer, but beat it last month. It sucks. t's and p's to all.
-
My best friend growing up was diagnosed with leukemia the week before her 20th birthday. Spent the next few months in KUmed's super elite cancer center (:tsc:) and went into remission in time to return to Boston College in the spring. That july she relapsed and had to get a bone marrow transplant. Spent both her 20th and 21st birthdays in an oncology unit going through absolute hell, but is again in remission and doing very well. Still on track to graduate in 8 semesters, and applying to med schools.
I know that not all of these stories have a happy ending, and I'm truly sorry for anyone's losses. But you have to try and stay positive. It's a rough ridin' struggle, and it hurts, but you can't let said loved ones see how much it hurts you.
-

Let me see if I can find the email announcement I sent.

Here's an unbelievable result of us finally beating ku last weekend. After going to the game in lawrence, we drove to Manhattan to party. As you'd all expect, I got insanely drunk and in a couple bar fights. When my various scars and bruises weren't healing so quick the week after, I got a general check-up with a doctor here in Wichita. He referred me for some x-rays and next thing I knew, I'd been diagnosed with Cancer in my right ball. I'd always thought it was a little bigger than my left, but never had any reason to think that was strange. I've since called a couple girls who have handled me and would have others to compare it too, and apparently that is a little unusual.
Anyways, I've got surgery here Friday and in the weeks after, they'll make sure that the problem's solved and it wasn't spread anywhere else. The doctor seemed optimistic that I'd caught it early and that this should take care of it. I'll probably be taking it easy all weekend and then I should be good as new, except for getting used to having 1 ball. Sorry, a friend of mine from out west already called first dibs on getting the old one if we get to keep it.
I should have my phone on me through the week, and I'll be home over the weekend. Kim and Jae will probably be at the surgery or soon thereafter. Their numbers are xxx-xxx-xxxx and xxx-xxx-xxxx respectively if you're dying for an update.
Again, the insane thing is I never would've found out about it had we not won that game and had I not in turn gotten so banged up celebrating. If we keep this win streak going, who knows what else I'll learn?
-Trim
P.S. Just in case my right ball was the baby-producing one, I'm leaving some samples at a sperm bank tomorrow around lunch and again thursday morning. So at least know I'm getting the most out of these last couple days with both balls.
Like somebody said above, it's all about staying positive. I freaked out a couple times, but for the most part all the medical people I dealt with said I was the funniest patient they'd ever had. I mean, balls don't stop being funny just because one gets cancer in it, right?
And I kept the ball.

Home now with hospice.
I'm sorry to hear that. You are in my thoughts.
-
Good amount of family on my side has had it. I'd say to keep perspective. If it looks horrible, keep up a good fight, but don't ruin your remaining days just to have another one. One of my lasting memories of my grand pa was him laid up after removing one lung, only to have the surgeon tell us, by the way its in his brain and pretty much every other organ system. So yeah....Better to have them at home surrounded by family than in a rough ridin' hospital bed unable to move hooked up to all that crap.
-
Sorry to hear that Cire. I'm glad he's able to at least go home for his final days. Really sorry for you, your friends, and family. Sarah's mom wasn't able to get out of the hospital. Be thankful and enjoy the little victories like getting to go home.
-
Cancer sucks. :frown:
-
sorry cire. lost my grandpa to lymphoma. prayers that he passes peacefully surrounded by those who love him.
-
He's home with all family. Hospice is wonderful, doing a great job of preparing his daughters and everybody. They gave him a week.
This spring would be 4 years since diagnosis. He has been a trooper, amazing though how quickly the end comes.
-
My grandpa passed away a couple weeks ago from young cancer. He was a pretty young considering he has a grandkid my age. The worst part about it was during his final week or two he couldn't really talk because he couldn't get enough air in his lungs to properly work his vocal chords, so we didn't even really get to talk to him. Since then I have officially quit smoking, even though I only did it occasionally. Not worth even a .0001% of that being the way I go out.
-
Just found out my 29-year-old best friend has colon cancer that spread to his liver. He has a wife and 16-month-old son.

Is surgery an option?

Chemo first, then surgery depending on the chemo. They don't think surgery on the liver may ever be an option. Best hope is the chemo kills the cancer on the liver then take out the hopefully smaller cancer in the colon.

does he have family history?
Nope. Just some random defect. Based on the size and the fact it's spread, they estimated he's had it for two years.
Hope your Grandma's scans come back clean.

Forgot to put this here but around Thanksgiving time found out one of my aunts has "not very good cancer." Tumor was 3 inches by 3 inches, she is in her first round of chemo and already had many radiation treatments. Scary thing is she is the second(after my mom having cancer) of 3 sisters(mom, 2 aunts) to get cancer.
-
would like to go on the record as being anti-cancer
sorry for anyone that is or has family members dealing with it
-
Hate seeing this thread back at the top. T's all around.
My little cousin that I mentioned on page one that has neuroblastoma, isn't doing so well. still going through treatments, still fighting, but the cancer has spread and he's on morphine every couple hours. Sucks.
Not sure if I should admit this, but the little guy is in the children's center in OKC and Stoops stops in regularly and always unannounced. Really cheers him up, and I've pulled for OU the last few years when they aren't playing the Cats because of it.

gma tobias was recently diagnosed stage 4 lung cancer. kinda a bummer to deal with because i'm essentially her main caretaker but also a blessing for same reason. not treating her because she doesn't want to suffer and all of her good friends have already passed. my family is really terrible at handling emotions but it's kinda been fun to get my siblings and everyone together to just try to have a good time. pretty much just trying to have 24/7 party time until it's not time to have 24/7 party time
cats.

sister died of cancer. took her 8 year (ages 19-27) from diagnosis until death. watched her die in front of me in a hospital in southeastern arizona after much suffering. ewings sarcoma. rare bone cancer. bone marrow transplant at uw in seattle, which I was a match for and provided. transplant was only done there bc of complicated insurance stuff. and also why i ended up moving to seattle. i have control of her facebook so her friends can reach out to her spirit. she was way wilder than myself, if you can imagine that. and didn't deserve to die. but she did. such is life. my father and i co-wrote her obituary. so, yeah, anyone in this thread. i get it.

If I had cancer, I would not feel supported or honored by some coach or coach adjace procuring himself a new pair of sneakers and wearing them mismatched with a suit. But what do I know?

One of our own gE’ers was recently diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. It’s absolutely imperative that we get as many people signed up for the bone marrow registry as possible. DM me for further details on how to help.

Found out today my dad has lung cancer that has spread to his liver. Because of his age and his kidney disease, there is not real treatment. Telling my dad he has less than 6 months is by far the worst thing I’ve ever had to do.

i’m sorry to hear about his diagnosis, not much anyone can say or do but he’s got a great perspective on things.
-
Sorry to hear IC. Brutal.

Well, 6 months ended up being less than 2 weeks. He really went downhill fast. Wasn’t anything they could do for him except help him with the pain.

So sorry IC. I went through the same thing with my Dad, prostate cancer. I've learned that when they tell you 6 months, they really mean any day now.

Very sorry to hear that. But sounds like a blessing that it went by fast.

Sorry to hear that IC. That’s awful :frown:

Since this is the greatest collection of quality people on the internet, I figured I'd share a bit of my life the last few days.
Last week I had some very bad abdominal pain and a few other gross poop related symptoms. I made an appointment with a doctor on Thursday thinking it was a bleeding ulcer but they decided to refer me to the ER.
Emergency did a few tests and scans and all indications were cancer in the colon that had metastasized to the liver. My pain and symptoms were from a microperfortion in the colon. They didn't want to mess with the colon out of fear of tearing that perforation so they took a liver biopsy. I stayed in the hospital for monitoring and pain management and got the biopsy results yesterday. They came back exactly as expected, adenocarcinoma.
Last night I had diversion surgery so the perforation could heal and allow me to start chemo within 2 or 3 weeks. So now I get to poop in a bag attached to my belly for a while until they feel it's safe to reattach everything. (sidenote, I've learned that you have no control over gas with the diversion so that's fun letting out sputtering farts while in a conversation with someone)
My case is not operable, but they are optimistic that it will be manageable though different treatments and drugs so that will be something I'll be dealing with the rest of my life.
Overall it's a pretty shocking diagnosis as I'm only 40 and have never had any other medical issues. I'm handling it pretty well, but my parents are both devastated and I really feel for them.
That's about the full story as of now. I'll probably have some more fun stories as I get in to the chemo.
-
sorry to hear that you are facing this. very best wishes, thoughts and prayers as you start treatments.
-
Kick its ass seabass!
-
lib, really sad to read this. hoping they get you patched up quick and treatment isn't too rough. you're an irl great human being and we need you around a long time so kick it's ass for us and get to whatever the manageable stage is quick.
-
Enjoy the medical grade pot. Looking forward to you managing the crap out of this thing.
-
I love you, buddy. I was just talking to a guy the other day who had the same kind of cancer in his late thirties, and he has been cancer free for thirty more years. You seem to be handling it with a cool head, but I totally get the weirdness of having to deal with the people around you freaking out about it (hint: it doesn't help). I think you'll be blessing us with your presence for a very long time.
-
And go to the doctor for regular checkups, guys! We’re old now!
-
wtf, libliblib. this is some bullshit.
-
Whip its ass. What size jar you need for this thing?
-
Damn, lib. You got this tho!
-
Appreciate you sharing lib, kick that ass
-
Sorry to hear, bud. Kick it’s ass, keep an optimistic outlook as much as you can. You obviously know we are here as you need it.
-
Dang love you lib
-
Thanks buds
-
I honestly hate to hear this. Hopefully they found it early enough and you're still a young enough buck to where it won't be too major of a nuisance. Having your attitude will also help you beat this thing. eff cancer!
-
We're all behind you lib.
-
Lib, all the best. You can do this.
-
You’ll beat this Lib.
-
Kick it's ass man
-
Love you Lib!
-
Damn, buddy. Good luck to you, man.
-
This was the first thing Hamburglar told me when he walked in the door so know we are thinking of you. You got this buddy!
-
And go to the doctor for regular checkups, guys! We’re old now!
One important thing that I didn't know to watch for is weight gain/loss. Over the past 3ish years I've lost 50+ pounds without a change in diet or exercise level. About 15 pounds of that within the last year. I'm a fat guy who never weighs himself so I knew I was losing weight because of loose clothes but not really aware of how much and 15 pounds doesn't really show up on me like it would on a fit person.
-
Damn lib, sorry to hear this man. I’m glad they found it and figured out what it was. Wishing you all the best as you start this journey. Glad you shared with us and know that like everyone else said, we are here for you if you need us.
-
I hope you kick its ass even more than KSU vs. KU on Saturday.
-
kick cancers ass lib, you got this.
-
We’re with you lib. Kick some ass

Damnit. I’m sorry, lib. Everybody here including me loves the heck out of you. Let us know if we can do absolutely anything at all (big or small).
-
You’re one of my favorite people so, for my sake, you’ll need to kick the crap out of this. Tia
On a serious note, please don’t be afraid to ask for help from families and friends (gE included). Most people really want to help but often don’t know what they can do. As I’m sure you’ll need car rides to appointments and assistance around the house during chemo, know your people want to help and emotionally it might be hard for you and your parents to do a lot of it on your own.

Lots of emaw love your way bro. Don't be afraid to ask my for anything, I got you.
-
Lib, sorry this is happening to you. Just keep in mind, cancer doesn't give a eff so do whatever you can to get rid of this serious crap. Lib, I never met you in real life, but damn we've been chatting with each other for the last dozen years and I care about you and hope you heal. BTW, you're only a year older than my son and too young to be dealing with this illness; so toke some mighty fine med weed and keep the pain away. Kick it's ass, Lib.

Katdaddy, yes!

folks, if I learned anything from the "jobs" thread it's that you should never pass up traditional medical treatment for cancer (and probably most other diseases) for "alternative" medicines and treatments. so that's my two cents here.
-
didn't know you were going through that lib. how are you doing brother?
-
One day at a time stunz. I went through 7 rounds of oxaliplatin which was pretty rough but I'm on a maintenance chemo schedule now which is pretty mild
-
Take my energy s s 7. Sorry that I am just seeing this thread but rest assured I have been rooting for you all along. I am vehemently for all people kicking cancer’s ass at all times.
