Title: NATHAN FOR YOU
Post by: JohnCurrie is Weird/Gross on December 10, 2015, 11:36:42 PM
In this thread we will talk about our favorite moments and quotes from Nathan For You.  The greatest performance art and #acting of our time.  I'll start.

I loved the skydiving bit. I mean, it's not my favorite by any means, but I can never explain to people how funny it was so I'm glad to be in company of people who know what I'm talking about.

JCiW/G, if I get the Season 1&2 DVDs off amazon w/my chase freedom card, want to meet up in MCI for like 10 hours the weekend of 2/6 and watch them all the way through?

I already have bought them on iTumes.  I'm off work for a month and have billions of FF miles.  Nathan For You and #SeattlePak?  We can view via Apple TV.

When you buy a whole season on itunes, does it come with extra material like the DVDs do?  If not, I'd probably get the DVDs anyway.  First 2 seasons would be like $10 w/that hookup that got posted in the credit card thread earlier.

Even if we ran out of crap we'd want delivered during by Prime Now during a Nathan For You bender, we could just walk up to the market and get entire dungeness crabs to bring back and eat while watching tv and staying dry.  Pretty much a perfect seattle winter vacation.

The 26-31 window works best of the 3, especially the weekend part and early part of that week at the front.  The 20-23 window's probably good too although there'd potentially be a few hours I'd get tied up on the 21st or 22nd.  The January slots would be tough but I could maybe make a couple days of that week work if I really planned ahead for them.

Each of the 3 Sundays in your windows has a 1 pm 'hawks game that would be a priority, but that'd be a bunch of binge'n anyway that would blend right in.

We'd be walking down to the stadium to pak around there regardless.  My plan is usually to get tickets from sellers down there if I stumble into great tickets, keep stumbling into a bar if I don't.

Every episode I think there's no way they can find more people in greater LA to get over on, and I'm wrong.  It'd be amazing if they never have to change location, but could also be pretty great if they have to or want to get into Brownbackistan.

Watch all of them, in order.  They can be done standalone, but some of them have the most subtle of references to prior events.

The Astronaut trying to convince the soccer-playing child about how space ruined his life was the top TV moment of 2015. I might never delete it from my DVR.

Quote
My whole life has just been a nightmare. It's a terrible experience. You know, most of my friends have died in space or gone insane from the unimaginable loneliness of being there.

Yeah?

Yeah. My wife and my kids, they died in space. It was an accident.

But I thought kids can't go to space.

Yeah, I smuggled 'em on against the rules.

Oh.

Some restaurants, they won't even serve me because I used to be an astronaut.

Really? That's like a brown person. If you were a brown person a long time ago, what happened, like, you couldn't go to a restaurant. Is that how it feels?

Yeah, that's kind of how it is. It's that kind of discrimination that happens.

Really?

Yeah, you know, I really just wish I had decided to be a soccer player instead of an astronaut.

Oh?

Yeah, it's too late for me now. I'll probably die on my next mission anyways.

Really? When is it, in two years?

Yes, sure, two years from now.

Well, yeah.  That's the only set-in-stone thing I have for the entire 5 days.  It was almost sold out before I knew who'd be around, so I bought the last, best remaining solo seat and the last, best remaining pair, figuring it would work out one way or the other.

I didn't get to watch Thursday's episode until just now, but I saw Friday's tweet about how the Diarrhea Times was available at 8 spots across the country, including one here, and knew it must be an integral part of the show.

So I drove down to the spot, which turned out to be a bougie grocery store in a bougie neighborhood, complete with artisan bread advertisement.  The newspaper was in a rack right at the front so I barely even had to step in.  But in trying to get back to the car, Payton saw a big patch of grass that she's not used to downtown and wanted to play.  There was another dog running around off-leash and they became quick buds.  That dog's human was a nice young lady sitting on the bench there that I'd normally have a pleasant conversation with, but I was still holding the rough ridin' Diarrhea Times in my hand and still had no way of even explaining why or why it's funny as I hadn't seen the episode yet.  Awkward.

Anyway, I now have a copy of the inaugural Diarrhea Times to auction at FattyFest.

Everyone come make stevesie feel good.

I liked the small talk and check-splitting best.

I think so.  It looks natural when you see him talking in the youtube vid on this page (gE exclusive, no texts).

50 hours?

Do you mean how many times did an episode totally diverge from the initial subject intentionally, or behind the scenes ideas they had to star that they merged into an episode?
Title: Re: NATHAN FOR YOU
Post by: MakeItRain on December 01, 2020, 03:52:19 AM
Check splitting was 100% the best. That scene where he describes his birthday, where he makes it seem like he's the blond curly haired dude, that wasn't him, he looks nothing like that.

Every episode had two storylines, the literal one based on the title and then a parallel storyline loosely based on the title.

Finally the footage came first, the production came later. I read a bunch of articles on John Wilson and this show, I think this is the one that describes the production of the show

I really think he had roughly a thousand hours of footage and had to tie it together somehow so he ended up having two story lines each episode because he had so much to use.

No we were both shrieking in horror and she looked away and I helped cover her eyes until it was over. AND THEN IT STARTED AGAIN BUT WORSE SOMEHOW. And I remembered I actually skipped the scaffolding episode because it had the "sexual content" warning. I thought the nudity for the furniture one was just going to be a butt or something on the street.

Also the daughter in the ep was ignoring the dad asking anyone if they wanted a grapefruit spritzer. I was genuinely saddened by it.

BTW did you guys catch kyle maclachlan in episode 1? I kept looking for other celebrities throughout the show. I thought some of the restaurant scenes might have had some NY celebrities.

it's actually a pretty nice jacket.  i'm one of those weirdos who, in the winter time, wears jackets like they're sweaters or something.  drives my wife crazy, but hey it's comfortable and an important reminder of perhaps the greatest atrocity of the 20th century.

I took it as her dad is always having people over and talking about his dick device and she just wants no part in interacting with him while this is happening.

I'm also now concerned about DLew's wife having a problem with that jacket.  Don't let her off the hook for her real reasoning.

on the one hand...i kind of wonder if John Wilson is going to become recognizable enough that it will be difficult for him to sustain this format because people will recognize him and be like oh i'm going to be in that how to show and then they won't be genuine they'll just be putting on an act.

On the other hand, NYCers are weird enough as it is, and the type of people he is filming and interacting with really don't need to try to be over the top b/c they already are. Plus, most NYCers tend to be pretty unimpressed by cameras/film crews/celebrities. its like stopping and looking up at how tall the buildings are. you just look like a tourist so they don't do it.

The people he actually talked to on camera knew he was on an HBO show. I don't think most people filmed on the street knew they were being filmed until they signed a release. And even then you can't swing a stick without hitting five guys that look like him in Brooklyn.

well I preferred to ditch our car altogether but I lost and now my wife is in charge of moving the car on street cleaning days (Monday and Tuesday in our neighborhood). I think a garage in our neighborhood is like $400+ a month

It's really not bad outside of those days. And we did sell a car before we moved.

So far the times I've driven it since September (outside of moving for street parking):

Once because my daughter was super late for school and driving was faster than the subway
Once for work
Once to drive my wife to Newark Airport for a global entry interview
Once to try to get a covid test (Sunday)

My wife drove down to DC to see family and took a daughter on a hike once but we really don't need it at all.

I am finally, finally getting into Nathan For You. Fired up the first two eps last night. The poo flavored ice cream bit as an opener was a bold and bad choice imo, and I was just not that into it from that point for like the next ten minutes because of it. Then the second ep hit where a 7 year-old and H. Jon Benjamin and a turtle are feeding him responses for his job interviews, and I absolutely died laughing. Hooked from there, can’t wait to bang out a couple more tonight.

I liked the one-off style of the first episode better, but this has potential to get really wild.

Yeah, I had a lot of hope after E1, but it feels like we kind of got bait and switch'd a little bit.

I'm here for it because it's so incredibly unique.  I would've enjoyed more like e1 but I'm also game for whatever weird ride Nathan's sending us on.  Throughout an episode, I'll laugh, cringe, and feel empathy for these people.  That's more than I get from most shows.

HBO gave critics the first five episodes of the show but not the sixth, which suggests some subterfuge. Each episode has a moment (or moments!) where you can feel the rug pulled out from under you, and something you assumed was true suddenly becomes a fabrication. (Next week’s episode has such a moment, and it took my breath away.)

What do you think this means?

Also, I keep having this thought that the end of season 1 will be Nathan saying that this season has all been a rehearsal for season 2. Then they show clips of season 2 and it's all the same bits but with different people that look similar to all the characters in this season.

Man, kind of a heartbreaking finale.  Such a weird meta-world he builds.  I can't imagine what is on deck for S2

No heartbreak here.  I loved him seizing on the mom's perspective to run the rehearsal to show that any negative consequences were her fault and clear himself.

I thought the season was kind of stupid, tbh.  First episode was so promising.

Oh crap, you reminded me I still have the season 2 finale of How To! Really didn't want it to end.

What's the strategy for that show? They have like 2 decades of hilarious and bizarre New York footage and try to make a narrative out of the funniest ones?

In a statement earlier this month, Bang CEO Jack Owoc referenced a new distribution network for when PepsiCo stops shipping Bang this month — and claimed he’s committed to keeping the business running.

“We’re coming like a freight train and cannot be stopped,” he said.

John Wilson is on Marc Maron's podcast this week. Not sure I've seen/heard him out of character.
