second fighter in as many days that russians have lost to friendly fire (the tweet here was early, the plane going down is now generally attributed to russian fire).

The EU is telling people to prepare for energy rationing and to start chopping wood

Hungary delegation goes to Moscow to negotiate increasing gas supply (Victoria and co are surely cooking up a coup).

Meanwhile the Russians are hammering TF out Ukrainian front line units.

#neoconGe never bothers to ask why Ukraine burns through weapons that our own military would consider to be the equivalent of the pace needed to support a much larger war.

Then again, our military hasn't fought a first world power in a war in (arguably) 70 years.  The last two times the U.S. fought a war against countries getting support from entities with a substantial industrial and weapons production capability.  One ended in a loss, and the other ended in a stalemate.

Armchair neocons/#neoconGe are to used to seeing the US taking on guys in old Toyota's with some old AK's and old Soviet machine guns.

still seems to be an ammo shortage for some reason.

maybe storing the ammo at a nuclear facility will keep it safe.

I think there will be an ammo shortage for a good amount of time. All the incentives in the US are to produce expensive crap that doesn't work like the F-35, not artillery for old systems or other cheap, useful things. Then you also have the basic materials supply constraints, limited factory capacity and this conflict seems destined for a prolonged slog.

Russia still, in my view, has the greater capacity to escalate and the greater desire to throw material at the conflict long term. I have mostly stopped hearing about a Ukranian counter offensive and I think the Ukrainians will be playing defense for a long time, albeit with the capacity to strike behind the front lines more often now.

Russian use of precision weapons has increased dramatically.  3rd parties allege the only way HIMARS work at at all is to have Western "consultants" sitting right next to the Ukrainians.

Unlike you, I don't believe everything your selfaffirming arm chair neocons say about the war in Ukraine.

I can also say (not allege) that StarBot.7 is a huge neocon, massive whatabouter, and the blogs leading deflectbot every time something is posted he doesn't want to read/hear.

It's very sad.

i think the tweet referenced is talking about a (unconfirmed and maybe half-debunked) possible encirclement of a smaller, btg-sized group of russian soldiers in a village near kherson.

the map on the left shows what i think is the area being discussed.  read the whole thread for the explanation/debunking and if you're still interested look for newer entries in this guy's timeline for updates.

Possible WW3 thread

I think a lot of people seem to think that somehow there will be some event that will finally change the course of events and return things to their “place”.

This is the same in the US, in Ukraine, in Russia, in China, in Italy, in the UK, Japan… occasionally radical things will happen like a former pm getting assassinated or a land war in Europe, but the structures and institutions just continue to sputter down the road. If everyone looks at the climate disaster unfolding before our eyes and pretty much shrugs I think it is very likely that the systems currently in place will just continue to perpetuate themselves at any cost.

Sea walls and guns and capitalism will keep things going don’t worry. So Putin isn’t going anywhere until he dies and then the state will probably just carry on in one flavor or another, there will not be a popular uprising.
