if it's true that he actually has an offer, he's gotta go.  you can't turn down maryland for a&m.

Brad Stevens.

He's holding out for Indiana. That's every bit as good of a job as Maryland.

It's a better job, IMO.

turgeon will build a monster at maryland.  a beautiful, fierce, dominating monster.

i wonder if malone is mad at hill, or just at kstate?  if turgeon chose to invite him along could he suddenly pull two years of dcas like the rutgers guy did when he left georgetown?

Is there a chance of Turgeon doing this, or are you just playing the "what if?" game?

it's just what iffy.  but it's within the realm of possibility, if malone still likes hill.  turgeon isn't stupid.

on the other front,   :crossfingers: hire "doc" sadler or "dumbstick" fox.

Jeff Capel to Duke may open the door for the Blue Devils into Perry Ellis' recruitment, per a source. "We will just have to wait and see."

 :surprised:

i remember from an old interview somewhere, or maybe from bbhoops, that ellis was a duke fan as a kid.  also capel was in texas recruiting randle and a 2014 teammate prior to his hiring being announced.

Turd needs an interim, perceived better job before he ever bids on the KU one so this is it.

would Turd going to Maryland have any effect on his Houston recruiting?  Maybe Figs can actually do some work now instead of getting us guys that Frank will run off.

To get Buzz, A&M would have to pay $2+MM buyout, plus beat his 7yr, $14MM Marquette deal. Is that really going to happen?

Last guy in the carousel usually gets the shittiest seat.  Looks like A&M may be looking for a seat without gum or vomit on it pretty soon.

I'd be shocked if A&M hired a major conference HC.  Its just too close to the bottom tier of coaching jobs amongst those schools for anyone to find it a step up, barring ridiculous money.  Pretty much have to go mid-major or asst coach.

i think they're prepared to pay, if they have to (reasonable money, not buzz williams money).  but the mid-major coach hypothesis seems pretty likely.  some pretty dece options in the region.  utep, n. texas, tulsa, wichita st, the other sutton kid.

n. texas guy looks pretty good, has recruited dfw well.  has ties to louisiana.  add those to a&m's home region of houston - pretty nice base to build a team.

other thought - spinelli could be their martin.  but i dunno if their incoming recruits are good enough to force that hire.

Texas A&M no Duke of the West
By Kirk Bohls | Tuesday, May 10, 2011, 05:02 PM

It’s a shame Mark Turgeon left Texas A&M for Maryland, the third-best coaching gig in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He’s an outstanding coach, a terrific person and should do well with the Terrapins.

The Aggies, however, are left with having to replace a great coach for the third time in six years. Billy Gillispie left after two solid seasons to take over Kentucky before getting fired and resurfacing in Texas Tech. Turgeon’s Aggies reached the NCAA Tournament all four of his seasons and were widely known as great defensive teams that milked all of their potential.

That said, A&M isn’t Duke. Not even close. It hasn’t had the rich history of a basketball powerhouse like Kansas or even a perennial Top 25 program like Texas.
For instance, while the Aggies have never won the Big 12 title, the Longhorns have won or shared three of them. Three Aggies are playing in the NBA, but none is remotely considered a star, not even the much-heralded point guard Acie Law. Texas has 10 in the pros, including two-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant, with three more on the way from Rick Barnes’ last team. Only two Aggies have even been selected to the All-Big 12 team — Donald Sloan and Law. Ten Longhorns — including Chris Mihm twice — have been chosen to the all-conference first team.

While the Aggies have never been higher than a third seed in the NCAA Tournament during the Big 12 era and gone 6-6 in Tournament play with one Sweet 16 appearance, the Longhorns have won 34 games (to the Aggies’ nine overall) and been to a Final Four although they have dropped off of late.
All this suggests A&M is a place for basketball overachieving and not exactly a destination for NBA talent, so it might not be able to lure a coach with high stature like the types Maryland was courting in Sean Miller, Jay Wright and Mike Brey.

That said, Bill Byrne has made one great hire after another and scored big with his last two basketball hires. Buzz Williams of Marquette would be a steal if Byrne can lure him away, but I’m thinking he’d come away with someone like Nebraska’s Doc Sadler.

He fits the mold as a hard-scrabble, defensive-minded, well-respected and popular coach with Texas roots as a former Texas-El Paso head coach and an assistant at Lamar, Houston and Texas Tech. Plus, Sadler is much more affordable, making just $900,000 a year after a recent raise. I also think he would greatly prefer the Big 12 over the Big Ten with its great coaches and great scouting.

Come back to us, old friend
