China tried to build a bunch of housing, but there were cost overruns and over leveraging by the developers. So China created some factors to keep developers in line with cost and balance sheet estimates. Some of the biggest (i.e., Evergreen) failed, and no one could step in to pick up the slack. What was intended to help the burgeoning middle class afford to live in urban settings has not worked out. Basically, you have to be fairly wealthy to buy a flat in the major cities. Oh, and a bunch of people lost their deposits in the process.

When you drop the team name, you're referring to a city/club which is singular

Yeah, I addressed that and called it "slavish devotion to grade school grammar." Conceptually, it makes more sense (IMO) to treat subjects as singular or plural based on a more erudite perspective. I'll stick to the supposed "rules" of American English for professional purposes, but I do believe the English have the better of the argument as it relates to subject-verb agreement. What is the difference between "Kansas City is ..." versus "the Chiefs are ..." when referring to what a 54-man roster are doing?

A roster is singular, plus it sounds better to say "roster is"

Like I said: stuff you're taught is "correct" in grade school. Open your mind, me boy. I was also taught in grade school I had to learn cursive because I'd have to write my college exams in it. Turns out that was untrue, too. Open your mind, me boy!

Shifting subjects ...

Defense. Offense. If a defensive player is defending, an offensive player is ... offending?

I think technically that is correct. One of the few language quirks the brits get right is usually referring to offense as "attackers". I think it's cleaner for grammatical parallelism:

Defenders vs. attackers
Defend vs. attack
on the defense vs. on the attack

etc.

defense vs. offense really only works as an action when it's "on the defensive vs. on the offensive" - "defending vs. offending" doesn't work like you said.

I think they also get the spirit of subject-verb agreement correct in the sports context. We say "K.C. (Chiefs) is," whereas they would say "K.C. are." You're talking about a whole group of people, not a literal single location. I'm also bugged by people saying "the data is," because "data" is the plural form of datum. But I realize I'm fighting uphill on that, me boys. And it's not a hill I'm willing to die on.

I’m with you there. It’s nonsensical to be looking at a group of 50 people and not saying they are

Cheers! It makes no sense to say "Kansas City is driving down the field" versus saying "the Chiefs are driving down the field." What's the difference, conceptually? Seems like a slavish devotion to grade school grammar that wasn't even correct in the first place.

I was flying back from Philly to KC (Lawrence) once, with a connection through O'Hare, except I didn't need to change planes because it was the same flight number, so I got to stay on the plane. We sat there for 5 hours because they needed an engineer somewhere (Dallas, I assume, because it was AA) to sign off on a repair. The repair? Changing the placard (sticker, really) on a lavatory ...

Ahhh, the joys of traveling.

I mean, I'd try it before knocking it. I'm skeptical of the economics, but I can't deny I'd be curious.

#blueanongE is so adorable.

Judging by the travel thread most of us fly.  Boeing whistleblower (allegedly) kills self in the middle of depositions about lack of Boeing quality control.  Meanwhile Boeing planes are losing doors, plummeting towards the earth because problems with pilots chairs etc. etc.

blueanongE:  Concerned that 1's upon 1's are blaming the issues on DEI and just not understanding why anyone would be the least bit interested in this issue.  All of which is 1000% onbrand.

Do we have a thread for all the Boeing stuff? Bc it sounds like the 2nd whistleblower has also died but I don’t know what thread this goes in

Probably the conspiracy theory thread?  But it is 2024 and if you are a whistle blower you have to legitimately be the worst whistleblower in the history of blowing whistles if your death ends the blowing.  I would have like 7 billion secret videos/recordings/affidavits/SUO that were set to be published if anything happened to me.  If anyone thinks "welp, he's dead, thats the end of that" then they live in 1915

Or Russia.

Further Googling shows that my property managers (the agent) use RealPage's services and are defendants in several of these lawsuits. I'm unsure if I can join as a Plaintiff, since I've represented the actual property owner (the principal). DickStone?

Related, have you guys heard about the rent price fixing lawsuits going on? Apparently there is an algo consultant that is fixing all their clients at the same (higher) rate and the contract states that the landlord has to use their price. The area I remember is Phoenix, but it was metros all over the US.

Deadpool 3 Drama? - Joy Behar vs Ryan Reynolds

All kinds of drama concerning Deadpool 3 cropping up on social media but I haven't seen any coverage in mainstream media about it. From what I gather from watching a few of the vids is Disney is doing some kind of post shoot edits installing their DEI agenda into the film (inserting cameos of diverse superheroes from Marvel flops) and Ryan Reynolds is pissed. Disney had arranged for Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to do a series of 5 interviews with Joy Behar promoting the film and Behar would be paid $10 million for conducting the interviews. Both refused to comply and Disney won't pay Behar the $10 million. Reynolds then reportedly inserts new scenes mocking Behar in the film. Now she is set to sue Reynolds for the loss of income.

Disney is hamstrung because they expect Deadpool 3 to be a tentpole product that will save them financially this year.

Is the drama real or is this internet rage bait? Strange that none of the entertainment media sites are covering it.

mildly self aware maga is interesting

Yes, lol. It's like the most outlandish story imaginable, for several reasons I don't need to bother listing. But how the hell does an actor insert new scenes into a film mocking Joy fuckin' Behar? Is he also working post production?

Damn, star seed has been in Europe so long he might have squatters rights now

I just hope he's been able to manage the trains, planes, and automobiles.

It's obvious that he's back to stuffing his nostrils with coke.

This was my thought. It looks to me like a relapse of his problem, so I'm hesitant to make too much fun of it. Still, he looks like crap.

What's the solution to reducing housing cost to income ratios?

Less people.

Fewer. Fewer people.

What's the solution to reducing housing cost to income ratios?

Build more housing?

What's preventing us from doing that right now?

I'm sure there are manifold causes. Nimbyism? Relatedly, zoning restrictions? Interest rates? Cost of materials? Greed? Cost of/supply of labor? Private investment groups snatching up a pretty good amount (16%?) of single-family homes? I don't know, but it seems pretty straight forward that building more housing would ease the supply-side issues we've seen for the past many years.

It's labor day here in Spain, quite a bit more celebrated than the American equivalent. Pretty interesting.

I thought every day was basically Labor Day in Spain?
