Yep, for 2 years. Announcement in next 30 minutes or so.
Guess the "daily" thread doesn't really work if it concludes on Day 1, but whatever.
-
:flush:
-
Lol at the Cuk fan base
-
Add to scoop thread.
-
rough ridin' savage move by our new AD by locking him up for a couple more years before Coach K retires. Sorry Duke, you're going to have to pay $$ if you want to steal our coach.
-
So he's getting fired on 5/1/19. Also, lol at new section 3.03 (b).

oscar needed this to be able to lock up that 4 star recruit he's going after.
-
Fans can bitch and stupidly moan all they want. Weber was GOING to get some sort of extension. Not giving the guy a raise, and reducing his buyout by 2 million once current contract is up says GW isnt an all in BW fan
-
Hopefully the reduced buyout is a sign to oscar that if a Missouri Valley team has a vacancy this offseason, he might want to express interest.

The purple ink was a nice touch too.

Takes him through the end of Brown, Wade, and Stokes careers.

and he'll probably be able to win his first ncaa tourney game that year with those 3/4 year starters, so yeah, he's gonna retire here.

I have had the opportunity to observe our men's basketball program and visit with oscar on multiple occasions since I became athletics director," Taylor said. "I couldn't be more pleased with the type of person we have leading our program. Coach Weber is well-regarded throughout college basketball as an outstanding coach and a man who conducts his program with integrity and class."
So is Taylor half full or half empty of horseshit?

Why on earth would you make the $2M lowered buyout date on May 1st? Who would wait around until May 1st to fire their coach?

Welcome ksufearless! What's your favorite weight room slogan?
Now, I made one of these a few years ago, at least I made an AngularJS app that had this website's widget embedded. Not off to a great start IMHO.

This kind of oversight is entirely unsurprising given what we know about Gene so far.

It wasn't an option to reduce the buyout before 5/1/19. His existing contract ran through 4/30/19, and KSU had nothing to offer him in exchange for reducing that buyout sooner.
His existing contract stays the same, with the exception of him having to tell KSU withing 72 hours of getting into serious talks about another job - and it'll be up to us to expose when that's happening a la when we broke the Marquette talks.
He now has a 2 year contract for 5/1/19 through 4/30/21 with a higher salary for those years but a much lesser buyout.
I imagine everyone in the negotiation knew that KSU wanted the ability to shitcan him at the earliest opportunity. Given that there was no way to do that cheaply before 5/1/19, they made this deal to try to pitch to dumb people that all is well.
-
We are BY FAR the loseriest athletic department in the country. Instead of a Venables/Frank combo we are going to end up with a Sean/oscar combo.

I honestly can't tell if you are trolling. What in the world have you seen from Weber that makes you believe he is capable of putting together and keeping together a team capable of that?

In the end it's going to be the outside voices that get him to leave. Everyone that has direct contact with him (players, coaches, staff etc) love the guy. He's a good coach. I get tired of hearing people say he can't coach, can't recruit etc. It's not true and it's there for everyone to see but most of you guys can't because you are still sore that Frank isn't here anymore.
It's like that movie Stepmom:

This. Gene's extension isn't necessarily the issue - it was JC's contract in the first place. the 5/1/19 buyout trigger guarantees oscar is our coach in 2018-2019 or guarantees we're +2mil poorer coming March '18. We're not firing him on May 1.
I'm admittedly low head coach contract negotiation IQ, but I googled the Cuonzo Martin contract and looks like April 30 is also the trigger date for his buyout. given the NCAA championship game is in early April, not really sure why these buyouts are so late. Snyder's buyout trigger is January 14, for instance.

Wow, Predicting we are going to win a tourney game is pretty optimistic for a fan that does not care.

How does cynicism towards university leadership enthusiastically accepting bare minimum standards preclude not caring?

I was just going by memes response on one of my earlier posts. Glad to see he does care and is now predicting a tournament win.
no one cares cat97
-
Window dressing extension bump to 4 years for a coach that made the tournament. I assume the negotiation didn't go well and Gene wants to hire his own guy.
-
not really sure why these buyouts are so late.
it's because agents also know when it would be convenient for schools to fire coaches and it is their job to negotiate contracts so that it is as inconvenient to fire their clients.
-
We just need Gene to work something out in early 2019 or even earlier w/a rogue huggins type who'd agree to the job behind the scenes then and agree to wait until 5/1/19 for it be made official. Use that time when he's not technically the coach to be recruiting under no restrictions.
That, or give af about hoops and pay whatever it takes to get someone elite in at the earliest possibility, and make back the money by being good and having fans.
I'm sure either one of those scenarios will come to fruition.
-
I think oscar really wants to coach for the next 7 to 10 years and will likely bail at the end of this year for a mid major unless one of the Jc or Fr bigs are a complete stud
I am pretty sure next years schedule is soft enough for the team be above .500 so the mid major AD that hires oscar can still win the pc
-
Gene probably wants to fire oscar at the end of the Season and hire Miles off the open market.

if true, and I don't for a second believe Bruth bolts from the golden goose for a mid major, but KSU doesn't want the optics of him leaving for a lesser job. KSU needs to fire oscar for optics, or continue to ensure his employment.
-
If oscar was going to leave for mid major he would be gone by now. Plus, I don't see any mid major worth a darn hiring a 60 year old slightly above average P5 coach. oscar either retires from K-State or gets fired from K-State IMHO. There aren't many other likely scenarios.

No mid major that would want him would be willing to pay what we do either

Saul Phillips at Ohio U is more likely imo

well obviously. It's also the job of the attorney of the university to take the opposite approach. so, ya know.

Seems to be a sliding scale for measurement around here. So enlighten me what exactly does oscar have to do now to hang around these parts.
.. I mean short of being Frank Martin of course.

Win more games and lose less games. Last season was equivalent to the bazooka joe football season. Would you want a football coach where the bazooka Joe season was as good as it gets?
-
hatingfrancis has gotten really good at this oscar trolling stuff over the past year or so, i have to say i didn't see it coming

That comparison doesn't even make sense. And besides wouldn't 2013 be as good as it get's (which was pretty good), as was 2014, oh and hey 2017 wasn't so bad either.
He's done well for K-State basketball and at the very least deserved a better fan response than he got and continues to get now.

Bazooka Joe happened tho because everyone was made of glass. oscar had a couple of guys like that last year too. :surprised:

I believe only KU, ISU, WVU and KSU fans give 2 shits for basketball and any coach that can't keep us in the top half of the conference must go. oscar is working on a 3 year streak on the wrong side of that line with the 4th year looking quite likely.
-
I don't even care about this. Except the gE broke it part.

Well that goes out the window when you have a former AD who decided to not give 2 shits for basketball

OSU fans sort of care I guess? But overall, good take.

I'm hopeful that we will be better next season but it'll be tough without Westicles and DJammer.
I would guess that no NCAA tournament would get oscar fired, but what do I know?

You can make a strong argument that they care the least. Baylor definitely cares more than all of the Oklahoma and Texas schools.

Appears this program has been railroaded, so to speak. Amazing that people with that much money want to align themself with oscar rough ridin' Weber...unbelievable

Now that their AD has ruined their program completely I could see them checking out, I guess. Baylor only cares even a little bit because they've been good. Their fans are still tremendous dorks who don't know a thing about hoops tho.

Call it Stockholm syndrome or just time, but I am coming around to the fact that we probably should appreciate oscar more than we do. Or at least I should. He's just so god damned dorky and not in the way that produces super smart ideas leading to great success. I've also begun to convince myself that Frank would've left on his own anyways (my current rationalization to get excited for the '17-'18 season).
On the other hand, we were so rough ridin' close to being a program, with a consistent identity. That's something we don't get with oscar. So yea, some of us will hate on oscar because he's not Frank and that is the way it'll be until the end due to the situation that led to Frank going to South Carolina.
Unless we pony up big time salary wise it'll be tough to get and retain an elite coach in MHK. Unless of course we have some former player from KS that is EMAW (oh wait, he coaches in Champaign, IL). At least I have a reason to watch more Big Ten basketball now.
Also, oscar's Saint Louis pipeline -- how will it be affected by Cuonzo? Maybe not much, assuming Cuonzo can compete more nationally for talent.

This might be worthy of a reply if I knew what your metaphor " bid on getting your head beat in " means. I'm sure it does not refer to physical violence as only a high school kid would resort to that.

Good point. But what old coach will come back to save day. Likely would have to dig up Hartman, shellack is rotted carcass, put him in a designer Weberthreads, sunglasses, and call him Coach Zombie. Probably might win more than oscar. The kids would know he would die for them.
