i saw Three Billboards and the Shape of Water this weekend in time for the oscars.
somehow i had no idea what Three Billboards was about going into it, i managed to not ever see a trailer or any meaningful discussion about it. WOW what a dark movie. i was uncomfortable throughout the the whole thing. funny at times, obviously, which is what it was going for. but the whole time i was just scared about what next shitty thing the next shitty person was going to do. the oscars that mcdormand and rockwell won were deserved.
SoW was weird. i'm trying to wrap my brain around the girl rough ridin' the fish man.
I don’t consider either of them a “Best Picture” but at least 3 Billboards was a good movie with great characters and actors. But I guess too many voters were offended by the fact that they didn’t make Sam Rockwell’s character a completely one-dimensional creep.
Shape of Water was just weird and didn’t even merit a nomination. I wonder how common it is for a BP winner to fail to land a single Oscar for the lead or supporting acting roles? It is going to be remembered years hence as “that movie that won best picture about the woman who has sex with the fish monster.” Great job, Academy.
But in fairness, they did nail the voting on all 4 actor categories. No question.
