Who's Questin' this summer??!?!?!?

@tdaver I'm curious, what can you tell me bout Logan, UT? I'm going there next week and will be there for a couple weeks for a work thing. I will have almost zero long-term getaway time because the only weekend I'm really there, I'll be driving up to Montana to visit a friend. But I would love some easy late-afternoon hikes that are drivable from Logan if you got any.
Doing a mini-quest with one of the kids in a couple of weeks. Going to camp by Cottonwood Creek near Buena Vista, do some hiking and listen to the creek with one of the kids.

Good country out that way.

Here’s a few pics from this weekend.  Split from my group after a short hike and found 4 miles of complete solitude in the middle of a national park on a Sunday morning.  Was perfect.

And a morning run on some ATV roads outside the park.  Again, not a soul around (humans anyway).

Just tons of awesome things to in that area (at least compared with Central KS) - rafting, fishing, hiking, skiing, camping, hot springs, cool shops/bars/restaurants in town, biking, etc etc.

I will be VQ'ing my way up to Seely Lake, MT in a few weeks.  I'm already super excited.  :surprised: :excited:

Went camping in CO with one of the kids last week. Great hike to Ptarmigan Lake west of BV. Came back to KS on a combination of CO94 and US40 (I enjoy desolate roadways).

There's something about the juxtaposition of cool, clear water and soaring mountains that speaks to me. Lots of high-elevation lakes in Colorado fit that description. The only better ones I've seen are in Switzerland.

Mountain lakes are magical. Kroenke Lake and Hartenstein Lake in that area are great hikes, also.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a phone map app/download that will still work with GPS when you are out vision questing and have no service?

I used ArcGIS explorer last year while chasing pheasants and it worked all right with the downloaded KS WIHA map. Should I just find a downloadable map for the area I'm going (Medicine bow/Routt area in SE WY) or is there a better app to use?

TIA

I’ve used OsmAnd when doing backcountry motorcycle trips in pretty remote areas.  It’s worked pretty well.  Ive had Gaia GPS as a backup gps just incase, so i don’t have any real experience using it.  But they both came highly recommended from other forums for backcountry riding.

So those two may be worth researching.  OsmAnd requires a small purchase to get the full use out of the app, but it’s worth it.

I know nothing about GPS maps but the Medicine Bow area is fantastic.

Do any gE'rs have experience hiking along the Continental Divide Trail? Thru-hiking this sounds like the ultimate vision quest:

i have met someone who did the tour divide race (self supported bikepacking race). 2700 miles from Banff to the Mexican border in NM. the winner this year just finished in 14 days and change. you have to be a complete nut to do it

Gaia is my go to, and the free version has been sufficient for my needs.  Have also used Avenza Maps with downloads in specific areas.

Also TrailRun/Hiking/MTB Project (basically all the same app but different names) are pretty good.  Just download the state before you head out.

Was this part of a group ride event or a solo endeavor?

That race is crazy.  Someone has taken the bike race track and made a track that motorcycles are able to ride and I’ve done about 80% of that route.  Amazing experience, and we ran into plenty of hikers and mountain bikers just doing the trail.
