Curious on your take, my understanding is recent rise in illegal immigration is mostly driven by cartels/coyotes advertising it harder due to the change in presidency. There's no real headway on making people want to stay in their respective countries (that's like an extremely hard to do nation building exercise) rather than immigrate. For whatever reason we stopped the asylum seeking while staying in a neighboring country or some specific bilateral agreements on it, which I don't know if that ever really helped. I haven't been tracking too much on just letting more people immigrate which I'd assume is the only other real lever on this.
i don't think the rise is due to advertising or even just normal communication around the regime change. my understanding (and i admit it is not comprehensive) is that the number apprehended attempting unauthorized entry has been rising since the previous admin started title 42 expulsions, basically closing the border and thus forcing anyone who might otherwise petition or asylum at a port of entry to attempt unauthorized entry and then petition for asylum.
the number of unauthorized entrants that are unaccompanied minors has risen since biden stopped expulsing unaccompanied minors, but it's a considerably smaller number than the overall increase.
biden made a show of ending trump's remain in mexico program, but he kept title 42 in place, which de facto accomplishes the same policy. i saw a clip with a refugee in ciudad juarez today who mentioned that he and his family were given an asylum appointment for mid august. in the meantime, they have no option other than to wait in mexico, attempting to survive there for the next five months. it is no wonder to me that people not given any realistic alternative either choose to cross illegally or send their children alone instead.
i also think that it is unacceptable that two months after taking office, they are still unable to humanely process and accommodate a few thousand unaccompanied minors.
