tenn. got a #1 vote in the coaches poll

Louisville RB is having a video game stats type of debut. 8 TD's in the first half

I get like 300 channels and none of them are SECNetwork :curse:

-
Hey TBT, how many receiving yards does App State's punter have?
-
:frown:
-
Why am I enjoying Tenn U getting their ass kicking by Sun Belt powerhouse App St. Could it be listening to the ESPN sport casters swallowing their dicks trying to justify an SEC patsies ranked 9th in the preseason. Has tenn beat anyone good since tee martin?
-
SEC! SEC! SEC!

I bet most of the 100,000 in attendance are wondering how in the eff is this a top 10 team.
-
Louisville is still scoring TD's, their RB made a position change mid-game and is now playing QB. Pretty typical stuff I think
-
Good coaching adjustment IMO
-
They never really recovered from the 01 Cotton Bowl. Sad to see them fall this far.
-

Now I'm wondering how SEC greats SC & Vanderbilt are doing.
-
From what I've seen so far, the SEC East is Mizzou's to lose.
-
Would love to know why UT was ranked top ten. They look really garbage-y

Watching this Tenn-App St game and can't help but think NDSU is a bunch of cowards for not bumping up to FBS.
-
This game is great, all these rocky top fans
-
Well, crap. TD tenn.
-
I'm more bothered by the SEC conference ads on ESPN.
-
This game is great, all these rocky top fans
The checkered overalls make them look very Iowa St-y

With no shirts too
Big drive here

Horrible clock management by appy st.

The NFL has rules to eliminate that. NCAA needs to adopt them.

Obviously the SEC team was superior tonight.

Houston playing strong and looking like a solid team against OU.
-
I wanted UL, and I've decided UH would have been a solid second addition.
-
I hope you're putting that in your pipe and smoking it, SDK!

This OU game is fun!

Do we need a separate thread for people who want to join the big 12 to see how they are doing?
Houston is doing well. That game's refs also know what PI is.

Yes. PI calls are being made for sure. Probably only reason UH is keeping it close. I vote for seppy thread though. I'll post in it.
-
And Mizzou still sucks. WV shoving down their throats.
-
Houston! That field goal return!
-
big game bob!
-
Will Oklahoma score again this game?
Will Bob Stoops be fired midseason!
-
Really nice to see Harbaugh turn his life around after being turned down at KU. Can you imagine the awkward conversations in that AD when he would ask to bring in Jumpman to an Adidas school? No sir!
-
Implosion
-
no big 12 in the playoff this year :frown:
-
Obviously Oklahoma is rocked by the news of the devastating earthquake and are in no condition to play football with people suffering at home.
-
Come on OU. Pull your head out of your ass.
-
Come home, Bob.
-
Come home, Bob.
wood take as assistant
-
Crap. Big 12 left out of playoffs again?
-
can we ask KU to politely leave in FB and ask Houston to play their schedule this year? boom, instant playoff team.

PJ Fleck about to get a big road win @northwestern

The Ohio-Texas St ending was the best I've seen in awhile.

SEC not looking so great, except for clear #1 Bama.
-
Iowa St.
-
Let's face it, this is a down year for the Big 12, let's just get our QB sitch figured and win this POS conference.
-
ISU has been the third best program in Iowa for a while now.
-
Washington State was beaten by Eastern Washington to the tune of 45-42 on Saturday.
Enjoy, Kirk!

Sort of think the qatz got lucky they didn't go after the pirate.
Then again, maybe they will hire him when he comes on the market again.
-
OSU is going to beat the piss out of OU. Urban is going to go in dry. Lets hope texas has a good showing today or we definitely wont have a team get in the playoff
-
Big 12 will be fine. Good grief.
-
Big 12 will be fine. Good grief.
Right. I'm not sure how Houston being better than we thought equates to the Big 12 being dog crap.
-
Unless OU beats tOSU we aren't getting a team in this year. The Big 12 looks like hot garbage this year, which is good for the Cats.
-
Tech, Baylor, WVU, and Oklahoma state crush their opponents = dog crap big 12 ????
-
Big 12 will be fine. Good grief.
Right. I'm not sure how Houston being better than we thought equates to the Big 12 being dog crap.
big picture it does im not only talking about OU anyone that played a team with a pulse struggled
-
Iowa State is who they are and Houston is pretty great. Yank yank
-
West Virginia just beat a SEC team, but yeah, total hot garbage conference. OU is literally the only team who struggled and Houston is pretty great. Like just won the peach bowl vs Florida state kinda great.
-
It's gE post game meltdown. Nothing new here.
-
You guys wanna talk about shitty conferences? Miss st lost to south Alabama, LSU to Wisconsin, Northwestern to western Michigan, Washington st to someone, etc. but you guys are right, OU lost to Houston.
-
OU was the best shot the big 12 had at the playoff is what I think people were trying to say. Someone else could run the table but that doesn't seem likely.
-
West Virginia just beat a SEC team, but yeah, total hot garbage conference. OU is literally the only team who struggled and Houston is pretty great. Like just won the peach bowl vs Florida state kinda great.
tcu who a lot of people think have a shot at winning our confrence just gave up almost 50 to an fcs team....and mizzou is horrible and wvu struggled more than that score shows (maybe try actually watching the game) I think houston is a very very good team, i never said they weren't. The best teams in each confrence outside of ours went out and do what they were suppose to do and ours didnt, couple that with #13tcu not looking that great and texas most likely losing tonight and nationally we do look pretty weak. I mean its week one so im not counting anyone out but if our hope is rough ridin' rape u in waco then put a bullet in my head now
-
I agree that the big 12 is not good
-
West Virginia just beat a SEC team, but yeah, total hot garbage conference. OU is literally the only team who struggled and Houston is pretty great. Like just won the peach bowl vs Florida state kinda great.
Punch yourself in the dick for propping Mizzou, and WV's win up wit that "SEC team" bullshit. They were crap here, and crap there.
-
OU was the best shot the big 12 had at the playoff is what I think people were trying to say. Someone else could run the table but that doesn't seem likely.
Why does someone have to run the table? That's pretty unlikely in the Big 12 anyway. ESPN did some kind of simulation and they protect like a 30% chance that there will be a two loss playoff team.
-
Wacky, good grief. Have some objectivity. WVU beating a terrible team from the SEC East and a few blowout wins against terrible FCS schools is not good by any measure. Oklahoma needed to win that game and TCU needed to handle SDSU because they are the top two teams and have the best shot at the playoff. Like it or not a conference is judged by its best teams and our best teams didn't show anything this week. If Texas wins tonight we can reevaluate, but as it stands right now the conference looks like dog crap.
-
I'm not going to meltdown over a TCU W and OU losing to a legit Houston team. Mizzou is 2 years removed from winning the SEC EAST, so sorry for saying meh to all the other bullshit. WVU handled them and it was nice to see. I honestly give two fucks less if we're in the playoff or not. Stoops can get mumped for all I care.
-
Big 12 and Pac 12 teams have to prove more than Big 10 or SEC to get into the playoff. That's just the reality. I don't see any Big 12 team that can do that this year, but I guess we'll see.
-
OU and UT are the only Big 12 teams capable of getting into the playoff with one loss. No Big 12 team can get in with two losses.

Most true. Mix in that UH has an iffy schedule with only Louisville in Houston in November, and they have a shot of taking a playoff spot, the odds get longer for the Big 12. Could the conference still get someone in? Sure. But yesterday did not help.

Oklahoma didn't need to do jack crap, if they win out they will be Big 12 champs and be in the playoff. And no one gives a damn if TCU beat a top 10 FCS team by 18 on opening night. Just like no one cared when TCU beat KU by 5 or whatever the hell it was.

I sure hope not. Missouri is garbage. Their offense is going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel again (126 out of 128 teams last year in offensive scoring). Drew Lock may not even be a 50% passer. :sdeek: WVU kicked their ass like they should have, a loss would have been a disaster.

Are there any non good smelling ugly people in austin? Every time they pan the crowd it looks like an Abercrombie catalog.

I've never heard DKR this loud on television.

Texas will save the Big 12 this year!
-
Remember when everyone made fun of them for begging a pair of Tulsa assistants to save their offense?
-
Fun game. Sure is quiet in Austin now.
-
Fun game. Sure is quiet in Austin now.
Yep. I think the first 3 quarters exhausted the UT crowd. Probably made more noise than they have in the past 10 years combined in those quarters. Probably several olds died as a result.
-
Don't let us down, Texas. :blindfold:
-
Oh crap
-
LOL amazing turn of events!
-
Holy crap
-
Good thing I don't have work tomorrow, this game is crazy
-
What a game! :excited:
-
Does ND have the balls to fake a punt here?
-
imploding

Overtime :excited:
BUT MAYBE NOT :surprised:

Hook'em horns

I don't know why that win felt so good but it did and there it is.

Maybe in the 40's

Fun game
-
Texas will find a way to tube this season.
-
I enjoyed watching that and I really like Chuck and UT but all of the people acting like they're going to be a factor and they're back need to pump the breaks. They did beat OU last year, then beat their daddies yet only ended up winning 3 more games.
-
They're definitely not back, yet!
-
80of this conference is still in the cfb playoff picture. Writing off KU, because #science.

shaggy is gonna be unreadable until january again :frown:

looks to be wide open this year, texas will be a player if they can play some decent defense. That frosh qb looked nice
-
I predict sketti brains for TX frosh qb in the not too distant future.
-
It was weird when they were using him for short yardage plays instead of the 18 wheeler package.

This FSU game seems like it's been on for 5 hours.

So, Louisville runs 5 plays, scores 3 TDs and is up 21-0 on the 'Cuse. 10:17 left in the first. Gonna be a long Friday night for the Orange.

Man their duel threat RB is a stud

The Houston and Louisville game should be really fun.

Mason Randolf kind of sucks, and so does osu

order is being restored in Lincoln right now

Mike Gundy deserves to rot in hell.
-
Odds that game is shown as a win in next year's OSU football guide?
-
Unbelievable ending there. Poor OSU.
-
that was amazing.
I still think the Auburn FG return was crazier event to watch live but that was very crazy.
-
Amazing finish to that one. Not sure the embarrassment to the Big 12 was worth the excitement of the game, tho.

Based on the context the enforcing of that rule would be awful though. If the penalty comes on a fourth down and the result would be a change of possession, then the game should be extended for one play. You shouldn't be able to end the game on offense with a penalty.

Not saying that the extra down should've been allowed, but the original intent of that rule must have meant if you actually lose a down right? Otherwise that is a really weird gift to the team making the penalty.

I think there about 30 people at the Duke game. I know it is a hoops school and all, but still.
-
wait, should they not have gotten that down? like the rules say they shouldn't have?
https://twitter.com/mikepereira/status/774696457353895936
Based on the context the enforcing of that rule would be awful though. If the penalty comes on a fourth down and the result would be a change of possession, then the game should be extended for one play. You shouldn't be able to end the game on offense with a penalty.
Yes, it was a very odd situation and I wondered about that too.

It would have to be. I don't think they considered the possibility of the penalty resulting in a change of possession like what we saw. The rule needs to be modified to allow for that.

Miami looks like crap against FAU right now.

K Trill doesnt look all that good

Its on BTN alternate, it should probably just be on cable access, Iowa State is real bad.

K Trill doesnt look all that good
It's not really clicking for him in Ft. Worth right now.
His accuracy has been crap these past two games.
-
Fuentes offense at VT is p good.
Fuente is a hell of a coach. He's deserving of a better job than VT, but he'll do well there for 3-4 years and take a pretty elite gig after that.
-
Just coming on to mention how shitty Kenny Hill is at throwing the ball, Sisco is absolutely better.
-
How did A&M let another HS QB get away? :curse:

TCU :flush:

Yeah, I'm marking down @Baylor and @TCU as "KSU favored" at this point.

His accuracy is and has been very suspect since the "Kenny Trill" days

amazing how often Arkansas can successfully play action bootleg to the tight end
-
That QB became dog crap as soon as he insisted on being called "Kenny Trill."
-
BYU just got called for an awful targeting call. They are getting cheated.
-
Damn, back to back questionable targeting ejections for BYU.

Iowa State is trash. I'm sure it'll still be a dogfight for us in Ames.

I wish we had Doug Mecham as an offensive coordinator

If I could only watch one season of Cats football on repeat it would be that 2011 season (minus the bowl game). So many gems.

Kenny Trillville Hill is good at football.
He's really not.

Kenny Hill has one of the most punchable faces I've ever seen.

Bert Bulimia!

TCU is Charmin soft, like a baby's ass

If not for the Texas win this may be the worst out of conference season for the Big 12 in years. Not good.

Big 12 looks super squishy this year. Title is definitely up for grabs.
-
Big 12 looks super squishy this year. Title is definitely up for grabs.
I've still got Oklahoma running away with it. They may be fringe top ten, but Texas is the only other team in the conference that is top twenty five. There will be a huge log jam at spots 3-8. Could be pretty fun

big 12 power rankings based on what I've seen

4. tcu/baylor
6. k-state/wvu
8. osu
9. isu/ku

is R. Gosling still coaching TT?

At best Tech is tied with TCU/Baylor. I'd give it a couple more weeks, but at this point I think you could say: Tech/TCU/Baylor/KSU/WVU as tied for third with UT/OU tied for first.
-
OU, UT, TCU, WVU, BU, KSU, TT, OSU, KU, ISU
-
Not really certain why he gets a pass for it but the things Butch Jones did were 100x worse than what Art Briles did. I know the media in Big 12 country holds Baylor accountable more than the SEC does Tennessee, but I'm tempted to point to the old ESPN/SEC partnership as a factor as well. :jeffy:

I know. I probably overrate them because they have the best QB in a league with what looks like a bunch of scrubs at QB.

Mahomes is good, does it matter at tech?

I'll bite.
OU
Texas
BU/KSU
WVU/Tech
TCU/OSU
ISU
KU
KSU's defense is going to carry the season. They seem to be the only Big 12 team that has something that resembles one outside of OU. If the offense can cobble together something relatively consistent, they'll be more than fine.
I think people are giving OU too much crap over Houston. Houston is that good. Most likely an outside shot at the playoff when/if they run the table.
-
Arizona is losing to Grambling 21-3 at the half, that would, without a doubt, be the worst loss of the college football season.

This Tech/ASU game is the most boring high scoring game I've seen in a while.

It's jumped the shark. We're probably 3-5 years away from seeing "revolutionary" power run football again.
Christ, it's why two decently coached triple option teams (GT, Navy) have had consistent success when they really have no reason to have it.

Tech
ASU has 6 yes 6 touchdowns out of the wildcat

This guy from ASU now has 7 touchdowns out of the wildcat. Tech blows.

This is how it looks right now. UT/OU seem to have the best teams by a significant margin, even if OU looked pretty bad in that loss to Houston. Its arguable that our loss at Stanford is the 2nd best performance by a Big 12 team so far this year. The battle for 3rd should be significant and I could foresee a bunch of teams finishing 5-4/4-5 in a logjam while beating up on each other.
-
My unbiased analysis:
1. KSU
2. OU
3. UT
4. WVU
5. BU
6. TTU
7. TCU
8. OSU
9000. ISU
404 error-does not compute. KU

we're talking trash on Kenny Hill after he had 377 yards passing and 93 yards rushing against a real team?

Did you see the game; to say he had accuracy issues would be putting it mildly. He has a great receiving crew and offensive coordinators that aren't crippingly risk averse. Even on what should have been the game winning touchdown drive in regulation he has two bad passes before his touchdown run then he commits a stupid penalty that costs his team 15 yards. He is an elusive runner, has an average arm; if he was here our coaches would have let him pass the ball about 18 times and 10 of those would be single pattern pass plays.

His name is Alex Delton
-
We are grading Hill on a curve due to the talent he has supporting him on the field and in the booth.
Boykin wasn't an earth shattering talent, but he was much better than Hill. I agree that someone with Delton's inherent skills would probably do nearly as well in their offense.
Hill is going to put up good numbers, but he's going to struggle to win big. Just like at A&M.

both, at least when compared to Kenny Hill

That's stupid

That's stupid
You're incredibly delusional. I've seen nothing from Ertz that makes me think he can do anything better than Kenny Hill at this point. Yes that's taking into consideration we played Stanford and our coaches suck.

Sisco would have 500+ yards on 55 attempts.

And you're incredibly dramatic and reactional. He is historically fast and his athleticism has been talked about from nearly everyone whose only experience watching him wasn't limited to 60 minutes while pak'd. He didn't have a good day throwing the ball but it wasn't to the point where you can say with a straight face that he doesn't have an average arm. You've completely dismissed what he is and can be based off of his first game which was against a national championship contender.
-
It's also stupid because you're arguing against all of the people who actually watched hill last night and came away unimpressed, you read a stat sheet.

1 touchdown on 55 attempts  look out Heisman, here comes Trill.
-

I watched over half the game and thought, "hey, this quarterback can make a play, how nice", long before I read this thread dismissing him as garbage. Didn't think that once about ertz other than the miracle 4th down touchdown.

ASU may get to 80.
Went to the game. Always such a weird atmosphere in Sun Devil Stadium. The game was mostly boring except for watching Ballage net 8 TDs and listening to Tech fans be all shocked when they don't score. They definitely all think their offense is the best thing ever. ASU really could've put more on them if Todd Graham wasn't an idiot. Everyone here hates him

I sat on the east side (which hasn't been renovated yet) and didn't walk over and grab pics of new west side. They've got a bunch of barricades up that makes it a pain to go around. I'll go back here this fall again and take photos for ya. West side certainly looks nicer from a distance tho

Awful lot of qhatz football being talked about in this non-qhatz football thread.
I want to talk some non-qhatz, as this thread's framers intended.
OU wins conference, UT finishes tied for second with Baylor. That's my updated predicto.
Given the poop city USA situation of the Big 12 (worst it's been in the history of the conference??? You can easily make the argument) I agree with _Fan that 4th - 7th is a hot mess.

I didn't see any college football after the osu lol ending, and america was on to nfl by sunday morning. What are the main things that happened?

Nothing really. Pretty boring weekend

TCU gagging away one of the precious few P5 wins for the big 12 was one of my key takeaways

Tech let some dude, whose only role is to run the wildcat, score 8 touchdowns.

Clemson only beat Troy by 6 and Georgia only beat Nicholls State by 2. Also there was some super boring Ohio State vs. Tulsa game on for some reason. And KU is pure hot garbage.

Could be. 2004 Big 12 was pretty bad. 2 Top 10s (OU, UT) a decent Tech (#18) and a bunch of others. Big 12 North was dreadful.

OK, I will look up the highlights for the tcu, tech and redneck games.

Oh, BYU Utah played the second most entertaining game of the season. BYU's new coach gets pretty turnt during games.

i'm not sure who i'm going to be rooting for in this one. curious to see how it plays out.
-
you have to just pick one and go with it. i suggest cal
-
my heart is leaning cal, but i don't want to pick them and then immediately see them lose by a lot and it's not a fun game for me all because i made a foolish choice early in the game.
-
Team, state , conference would have you rooting for the golden bears I believe
-
you can pick after half, sys
-
NOPE!

Let's go Charlie.

Does field/stadium naming just go to the highest bidder or do they care at all about the actual name? "KABAM" field is the second worst name I've seen next to "YUM! Center"

it's a miracle cal is in this game with the way texas can run for like 10-15 yards any time they care to.

Just did, and I'm sticking with my rankings. I'm not even talking about brands, just how stupid the names look on the field.
-
it's a miracle cal is in this game with the way texas can run for like 10-15 yards any time they care to.
Yea, I'm not sure why they don't just have Swoops in there and run 100% of the time.
-
football really is a ridiculous game. i give it 15 years, max. maybe not to disappear completely, but to be relegated to the sideline of barbaric sports played by dumbasses and psychopaths. like boxing and ufc.

For the amount of income it generates now, this would greatly surprise me. I'd give it a much longer horizon.

CAL is at least showing fight
-
well now.
-
Texas has perfect uniforms
-
For the amount of income it generates now, this would I'd give it a much longer horizon.
i think it will rot from the ground up. amateur athletes will stop playing it for free, high schools will stop fielding teams when the courts decide they can be liable for sponsoring an activity known to be dangerous. etc. you'll still have pros willing and able to destroy their bodies for pay, but it will wither.
-
Texas's all whites are the best uniforms in football.

I agree something like this will eventually happen, but I don't see how it could destroy football within 15 years. A lot of kids that play football currently see it as their only means to an education or even career. If High Schools stopped offering it within the next few years (which I really doubt), some other farm system would spring up to fill the void.
-
Do millennials even understand how lucky they are to grow up in a pac12 after dark world?

this is really good. i like this.

yeah, could be longer, i dunno. things can change fast though, once they get started changing.

texas should have run, even with the clock, because they're much better at that than passing.

Appears you are correct sys

we did it!

wait, what sort of unamerican bullshit is this.

ok, that's fine then.

I mean, Texas should have lost, but not like that.

good job, refs. good work.

Not a good day for the Big XII.

What happened with the Texas game refs?
-
:sdeek:
-
i should probably take it to the shame thread but i fell asleep before the 4th quarter of the Cal game
-
I felt energized after eating for like 10 minutes then I fell asleep too
-
At the very end (Texas was behind) Texas punted and tried to hold Cal, who on third and short broke a run all the way to the end zone but did that stupid back handed flip right before he crossed the goal line. Texas guy picked it up in the end zone but the replay refs ruled it was not an immediate recovery so still Cal's ball.
Replay refs also missed a pretty obvious incomplete pass that led to a Cal score earlier, but not that big of a deal.
-
i should probably take it to the shame thread but i fell asleep before the 4th quarter of the Cal game
the good part about doing the same thing is that i just got caught up so it's like i never missed anything
-
I watched it all
-
I fell asleep, woke up and read through sys' posts here to see we won, but didn't see what all the fuss was about until checking "the other site" (in this case, espn.com) this morning.

Holy crap that LSU Auburn game ending
It was unreal. But honestly, LSU had two straight plays that had d00ds who were definitely not set. And I wasn't listening to audio and was watching from kinda far away...on that penalty before the last (non-)play of the game, shouldn't there have been a 10-second runoff? Not sad to see LSU lose. It was definitely the fair ending.

An Okie St fan acquaintance of mine tried telling me before the season that Mason Rudolph was easily the most underrated QB in the country. Said he's top 5 of college QBs.

LSU got mumped
lol no they didn't
-
LSU got mumped
lol no they didn't
Yeah, they did. I have no dog in this fight but the technique of that review was mumped. Disclaimer, I didn't see the game only the highlights on watchESPN, so I could be wrong about the review. So it was deemed on the field that LSU got the snap off on time, that replay with the clock on it shouldn't be enough evidence to overturn the call because while you can see an overlay of the clock, you cannot see the white hat and you cannot see when he wound the clock. That clock could have started before the referee wound it but we have no idea. There is also the issue that the overlay of that clock and the video of the gameplay may not be perfectly synced, those are two different cameras put on one graphic. If you recall some cbb replays before the advent of the backboard lights, this was an issue then too. Bottom line is that replay without knowing when the referee wound the clock isn't enough evidence to overturn the call.
I watched the full speed play with headphones on, this is the only way to hear the accompanying whistle with the referee winding the clock, and it is impossible to tell because it looked and sounded as if it was snapped on the whistle. Obviously the replay official does not have the luxury of doing this, they cannot use sound on the replays.

No one should never ever ever complain about our tv contract. There is a top 10 team in the power five playing a close game right now that about 90% of the country can't watch at all, not even on a stream. The Pac 12 network is AIDS.

I was going to ask you but when I downloaded the Pac 12 app it kept crashing and I couldn't open it. By the time I got it uninstalled and reinstalled I saw the final score on the espn bottom line.
Good, I need a login that gets me SEC network access.
You can't get watchESPN?

BookMaker.eu opened Houston HC Tom Herman as the favorite to become LSU's next coach.
Herman is +100, while Florida State's Jimbo Fisher is +250. Rounding out the top five are Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury (+1400), TCU's Gary Patterson (+1500) and Louisville's Bobby Petrino (+1700). Les Miles was fired following LSU's last-second loss to Auburn.

I think Stanford vs. Washington is an intriguing gridiron matchup.
-
Does it bother anyone else when commentators use the term "arm talent"? It just hits the ears wrong and sounds really goofy. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Interesting match-up tonight with Stanford and Washington. Go Cats.
-
West coast football is just so much better. Idk why
-
carnes is correct again (of course)
-
:flush:
-
I didn't realize Stanford lost both of their starting corners last week. Sucks for them.
-
Washington is a very unlikable team. Seems fitting for a state full of shitty people.
-
This BYU-Toledo game is fun :emawkid:
-
so BYU basically has no defense whatsoever because they just let Toledo hang half a century on them. what this means is that WVU is getting absolutely run today.
-
That Toledo game is the only BYU game I haven't seen this year; their defense had been very good against at worst decent offenses.
-
Sooooooooooooo how's about that first five minutes of the ND-Syracuse game?
-
more pressing, what's up with ISU/Baylor??
-
more pressing, what's up with ISU/Baylor??
College football, Big 12 defenses, Baylor's fraudulent
-
We're in the second quarter in Stillwater and OSU have blocked three UT kicks.
Also no one has played a tiny bit of defense
-
Big 12 is just awful.
-
Every single team in the b12 is beatable by just playing a decent game.
-
Both of these Big 12 games are comically bad. Fun games but these teams are very very flawed.
-
 Baylor
-
The Big 12 is going to get blown out in the Sugar Bowl. :frown:
-
who gives a crap
-
I know that in this new age of football they try to limit contact in practice but Texas should really practice tackling more.
-
The Big 12 is going to get blown out in the Sugar Bowl. :frown:
I wouldn't be so sure of that given the opponent will be either Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, or Ole Miss.

Would take. If us.

I mean they're probably going to win 5 or 6 conference games
-
@mir I'm coming to that hell hole Ames for the cats game. If they lose I'm holding you personally responsible.
-
Holy crap  the last play of the third quarter of the Baylor ISU game
-
Charlie Strong is gone.
-
Going into today's game ISU's quarterback had the third worst QBR in the power 5
-
Does Vegas put odds on ISU's chance of blowing this game in the fourth quarter? I'd put it at 50/50.
-
Charlie Strong is gone.
Nope
-
Has it been talked about how shitty Boone Pickens stadium looks inside? That ring of suites is so plain and generic looking.
-
Baylor may implode after this game. Couldn't happen to a better group of people.
-
Charlie Strong is gone.
Nope
I don't see him coaching there next year. You don't get a lot of time to start winning at a program like Texas.
-
Game in Ames just got a lot scarier.
Paul Rhoads' plan is finally coming together. Good for him! :excited:
-
It's scary because I wrongly thought ISU would be closer to KU ineptness. Clearly they are not.
-
Probably more like 70/30 now.
-
Seeing that POS baby Briles on BU's sideline still infuriates me.

Washington is a very unlikable team. Seems fitting for a state full of shitty beautiful people who love to watch their Huskies play football the way it is supposed to be played.

I did, that will clearly change after today. Other teams beside KSU can improve as well. If Rhoades was was still their coach I wouldn't give them that benefit of the doubt.

This is that one ISU game that happens almost every year, nbd guys

He has to be the one that tried to argue with Brenda Tracy, right?

That's fair. They're going to lose this game though and whenever someone reads too much into one game I'll always post this link http://m.espn.go.com/ncf/gamecast?gameId=400763456&action=recap
Also as it regards to coaching, Iowa State has about a billion penalties for roughly a trillion yards today and they've been doing that all season. I would be surprised if they are in the top 100 nationally in penalties per game.
-
It's v weird that you guys still think ISU is going to win this game.
-
Iowa just lost at home to Northwestern  Iowa has two home losses, to Northwestern and North Dakota State

lol, i never knew western virgina had a tiny little baby press box too
-
I don't like that Texas looks really good sometimes but then loses games. They're going to end up making some Big 12 front runner look very bad this season.
-
Texas hasn't looked that good in any game this season.
-
Have you watched the games? It seems like they can run at will for quarters at a time.
-
Of course Iowa State blew that game.
-
Have you watched the games? It seems like they can run at will for quarters at a time.
They have the worst defense in the Big 12, outside of maybe Kansas.
-
Defense is definitely their biggest issue, but they still have a big front line that can stop the run and pressure the QB.
-
Seeing that POS baby Briles on BU's sideline still infuriates me.

Michigan State just lost to Indiana.

I bet Jackson takes them down to score and win

Both of these teams belong in the CFP.

It was fun yesterday when iowa state was on a side tv and we'd look up and see they were winning by 1-2 TDs and knew they'd lose somehow and then we missed them actually losing but it didn't matter as we'd already spoiled it for ourselves.

The police department was reporting to the coach and the coach called one of his players a traitor for helping a rape victim and the reportedly watched the same player get jumped by some other members of the football team.
This stuff has all been reported, anytime ESPN wants to do an Outside The Lines the story is just sitting there getting grosser with each Burch Jones win. I can't for the life of me figure out why they won't investigate though.
-
Okay I remember the story about them tossing the player under the bus at a team meeting/lockerroom thing. I don't think I knew they jumped him afterwards.
Which is worse thought, ignoring it or going full Ken Starr?

Sustained winds of 140 mph? That's like having an F2 tornado sit on top of your house for hours.
Nope.

i'd actually watch a game played in 100+ mph winds and downpouring rain. on the tv obvs, but still.

Watchin' Navy and Houston on CBS Sports Network. Last week got held to something like 47 yards by Air Force. But elite-y Houston not likin' Annapolis. 43-33 with 5:39 left. Middies running it down Cougar throats.

The PAC 12 is lucky to have UW, because the rest of the conference is as dogshit as ours.

After the Stanford game, my thought was any legitimate top-20 Cats team would have left that stadium with a three TD victory. It says something about how bad the B12 is this year that we're kind of going to contend.

This Wisc tOSU game has been fun so far. Good coaches, great athletes, amazing venue.
-
do we want Bert to win?
-
I want OSU to lose. I always cheer for the lower ranked squad.

I'm coming up next week and staying with my parents in Salina. Instead of going to Manhattan, should I stay in Salina and go watch the 6-1 KW Coyotes take on hated rival Bethany or head west to Hays and watch the 5-2 FHSU Tigers take on Missouri Western?

Really not pleased with all the calls in that. Lots of blown holding calls that really helped tOSU. I think the refs did make the right call overturning that interception though that hurt tOSU.

BYU horrible fake punt on 4th and 19 from their own 5. Then holds Boise St to a missed field goal.

this is some pretty fun #afterdark'n
-
That was an interesting ending.
Question, should the clock have kept running on byu since there wasn't a change in possession? Or is a blocked kick like that treated more like an incomplete pass for the purposes of the clock?
-
The clock should have kept running, that was a live ball. Actually the clock should have stopped because Boise should have gotten a 15 yard penalty.

If Mizzou having issues with Middle Tennessee in Tiggerville.
I hope they turn it around soon. I sort of feel bad for them (well, sort of). They are already in the turd division of the SEC. Already trailing traditional turds such as Kentucky and Vandy. What happens if they cannot beat a directional school for homecoming? Will the crowd start chanting "S-E-C! S-E-C!"

"Ithink they still steal signs. We’ll have to keep an eye on that. That’s certainly the reputation, and I think they have technology and expertise on the subject, which if they ever go to a different conference or something, I’d certainly like them to share it with us."
Many people are saying that Leach should wait for some proof here, but whatever. He’d go on to call ASU’s sign theft an “unsavory practice” and said the Sun Devils have “a whole command center designed around this stuff.”

leach is a dumbass

You heard it first from black cats and now leach confirms: asu is looking to change conferences

More helpless situation for the fans; OC Dana Dimel at K-State or DC Mike Stoops at OU?
Stoops could actually be fired unlike Dimel.

That'd be a pretty great Christmas dinner. "Hey bro good to see you, remember when you fired me from my job? Can you pass the gravy?"

Or Tech only scored 17 against TCU's defense...

Big 12 didn't deserve a playoff slot anyway.
-
Baylor's last drive was a complete WTF. No idea what they were thinking. Their offense seems broken
-
It was amazing to me that Texas didn't run the play clock to zero if they were just going to run straight right, anyway.
-
That was a total WTF last drive for Texas... run the clock down, but it worked out for them anyway.
-
Auburn looking great, love watching their run game when it's rolling.
-
I was offered free tix to Cal/Texas and turned them down
Get free tix to Cal/UW and I'll come down. I want the bobblehead.
I'll ask. Might not be able to go though. so many bay area entertainment options, maybe I'll be at a concert or something.
Fun!
Rusty, don't forget to get us tickets to this game, or at least try to have someone that's going get and sell me the Marshawn bobblehead.

At first I thought "wow, how drunk do you have to be to get arrested for public intox at a football game?" But then I realized it was TCU and they probably love locking people up for drinking.

couple of fun games tonight

oh man these isu gems are going to be the biggest most expensive gems ever. does that mean rare? no?

Man that ginger ISU kid was amaze.
-
I feel so bad for flood aggie watching this game. Once again, they are competitive during the first half, raising the fans' hopes. When it comes crashing down in the second
half quarter, again, it will only crush them a bit more.
KU has no hope, so their fans' can live with the losses. ISU hasn't given up, so the hurt more.
(Mid-post edit due to Westbrook catch.)
-
Colorado vs UCLA...holy crap the personal fouls!
-
The last one was complete trash. I forgot how shitty CU fans are, I wonder if they're even watching this game.

Can you imagine how rough ridin' miserable life must be if you are ever relegated to treasuring a bobble-hovel? #leftcoast-distopia.

For some strange reason, I am enjoying Colorado being decent again. NU and MU I want to lose every week, I don't really care about aTm, but CU I find myself cheering for, despite all the snarkiness towards Snyder and JUCOs, etc. back in the day.

True story. SdK was born in Colorado Springs. SdK wore his starter jacket to KSU games. KSU beat CU for the first time in a while. SdK cried. SdK became a wildwildstatecat fan after the tears were gone.

LOL, no, not unless Michigan and Ohio State are also getting in. What the hell was Herbstreit doing there? I'm glad Fowler aggressively mushed him.
I kind of hope either Washington or Clemson gets left out though just to see how batshit crazy people get. The quicker we can get to eight the better.
-
I flip flop back and forth. I think OSU is probably the better team, but winning your conference should mean something. Otherwise why have them?
-
If there is one thing I've learned about the CFP, it's that the committee will somehow justify putting Ohio State in the playoff no matter what.
-
I flip flop back and forth. I think OSU is probably the better team, but winning your game should mean something. Otherwise why have them?
i think if it wasn't Pedo State this would be a bigger deal but who wants to defend them?

I think that's part of it too for me. Penn State basically showed you can get away with it.

GMAFB. Everyone actually involved in the coverup should be in jail, but after that, I don't see any reason to somehow hold the football program to a higher standard.

ESPN making a big deal about Baker Mayfield coming back is hilarious. Where exactly was that midget system qb going to go? Something pro other than sports?

Penn State lost 2 games. uw, osu and clemson all have 1 loss. that's where the argument pretty much starts and ends for me.
this is just a weird year where the champion of probably the best conference had 2 losses. congrats on winning the big ten, penn state. that's quite an achievement and cause for celebration. unfortunately for PSU, the out of conference games count too.
the two loss team should always get left out when compared to p5 teams with fewer losses.

The problem is the committee pretty much used the opposite reasoning to put Ohio State in the playoff a couple years ago.

i don't have a problem with a conference championship being considered a tiebreaker of sorts for teams with the same number of losses. i think SOS should be the tiebreaker, but whatever.
but i don't think, under any circumstance, a team with more losses should get in over a team with fewer losses. that's like rule number 1 of college football: whoever loses the least gets rewarded.

They mean as much as any other game. And they means as much as they ever have: It's an achievement in and of itself and an opportunity to boost your SOS.
But I don't think it makes any sense to make conference championships a requirement. They were never a requirement for going to the national championship ('01 Nebraska, '03 OU).
Putting PSU in wouldn't make any sense. They lost more. End of story. Grats on your conference championship.

But I don't think it makes any sense to make conference championships a requirement. They were never a requirement for going to the national championship ('01 Nebraska, '03 OU).
Putting PSU in wouldn't make any sense. They lost more. End of story. Grats on your conference championship.
It certainly was a requirement for Baylor and TCU in 2014. The committee has shown (and is about to show again) that conference championships matter, but only if the team that wins it is a big name team they want in the playoff.
-
the best 4 teams in the country according to the clamsometer are bama, osu, ou, clem
i don't care about records, the goal is to get the best teams in the playoffs and the clamsometer cuts through the bullshit
-
Penn State lost 2 games. uw, osu and clemson all have 1 loss. that's where the argument pretty much starts and ends for me.
this is just a weird year where the champion of probably the best conference had 2 losses. congrats on winning the big ten, penn state. that's quite an achievement and cause for celebration. unfortunately for PSU, the out of conference games count too.
the two loss team should always get left out when compared to p5 teams with fewer losses.
Western Michigan has 0 losses.
-
Conference championship games mean nothing at this point

It was a tiebreaker of sorts between teams with the same number of losses. I don't think we even need to reach the discussion this year. If you have teams (with passable schedules) with the same number of losses, then you can start looking at all the other crap.
Western Michigan has 0 losses.
the two loss team should always get left out when compared to p5 teams with fewer losses.

Feel like Conference championships have to matter. If you get in without one, it's complete bullshit. If a team is good enough to get into the playoffs, they should be good enough to win their rough ridin' conference. If not, then that's their own fault for sucking ass and not getting the job done when they should have.

Well then make it a rule that the CFP takes the 4 best conference champions. But prioritizing conference records before actual overall records is just crazy to me.
-
pmshead has a washington hoodie.
-
This year pretty mich shows why an 8 team playoff would make everyone happy. Conference champs in Bama, Penn St, Clemson, OU, Washington. tOSU and Michigan at larges and Western Michigan top non p5
-
I'm satisfied. eff Penn State. Not because of the scandal. Just because eff them, they suck.
-
Lost in all of the playoff drama is that the K-State coaching tree won 2 conference championships yesterday.
Truly America's team

Non-con SOS only matters to teams outside the P5. You're better off scheduling garbage and then winning your conference championship like Washington.
If OU had done this instead of playing Houston and tOSU they'd be undefeated with the 2 seed.
-
No
-
I hope they'd be rightfully left out. The Big 12 is piss poor.
-

No way OU at 12-0 and ranked #2 in the country would be left out.
-
They wouldn't be #2.
-
They wouldn't be #2.
They started the season at #3.
-
Beating only two goodish teams shouldn't get you into the playoffs. I mean my God have some respect for the sport and the fans.
-
They wouldn't be #2.

Oh is the AP deciding playoff spots this year?
-
Not saying it should. But given the current system, it would take a pretty special scenario for the committee to leave out an undefeated OU.
-

No denying the AP has some influence. Perception still counts with the committee.
-
You should email Currie that our national championship run is in jeopardy next year. We need to drop that Vanderbilt game and schedule a 48-0 snoozer of a home game against FAU or someone.

I get the argument for playing tougher games in the non-con from a consumption standpoint. Are they more enjoyable to watch and more satisfying when you win? Absolutely. But given the current system, I would rather put myself in position to enjoy those games at the end of the season rather than the beginning.
-
I don't think you should necessarily have to win your conference to get into the playoffs, but I do think you should not be eligible if your own conference's champ isn't good enough to get in.
-
OU's mistake was scheduling Houston. Playing OSU is/was a great decision.
-
Army Navy is the best rivalry in college sports, no doubt about it. What an awesome game as it always is. When do you ever see the field rushed during a neutral field game?

Agree. That was a fun game to watch. And Verne.

Classic atmosphere, good times. I've been watching more and more the last several years as each team started getting good.

Why just expand the playoffs to 8? How many are in rhe NFL playoffs? They only have like 30 teams.

WHAT IN THE WORLD?????????
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/wake-forest-radio-announcer-fired-after-school-concludes-he-gave-opponents-info-224238409.html
Wake Forest radio announcer Tommy Elrod has been fired after the school said an investigation found he had been giving Wake Forest opponents information about the Demon Deacons since 2014.
Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said after a Nov. 12 loss to Louisville that there was a “game-plan breach” the school was investigating. Wake Forest led the Cardinals 12-0 before giving up 44-straight points.
The school said in a statement Tuesday that Elrod, the team’s radio analyst “provided or attempted to provide confidential and proprietary game preparations on multiple occasions starting in 2014.” The statement said Elrod was acting on his own and Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said after Clawson’s remarks that he had “no knowledge” of the situation.
Elrod was fired by team radio partner IMG and his bio is already deleted from the Wake Forest site.
“I am extremely disappointed that our confidential and proprietary game preparation was compromised,” Clawson said. “It’s incomprehensible that a former Wake Forest student-athlete, graduate assistant, full-time football coach and current radio analyst for the school would betray his alma mater. We allowed him to have full access to our players, team functions, film room and practices. He violated our trust which negatively impacted our entire program.
Elrod became a part of the team’s radio broadcasts in 2014 after he wasn’t retained by Clawson as a member of the team’s coaching staff. Elrod, who started as a graduate assistant, had been on the coaching staff for 11 seasons. Perhaps he was bitter about being removed from the coaching staff.
Wake Forest finished the season 6-6 after losing its final three games. The Deacons will play Temple in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27.
“I’m deeply disappointed that [Elrod] would act against Wake Forest, our football team and our fans in such a manner by compromising confidential game preparation information,” athletic director Ron Wellman said. “It is a relief that the team can move forward without his actions further undermining the positive strides Dave Clawson, his staff and the team have made.”

Not really. His complaint was actually real.

I get coaching is a cut throat industry, but I'm still surprised after 2.5 years not one person called Doeren and tipped him off.

I wonder if Louisville will have to forfeit this game. NCAA needs to put on their cape and swoop in.

"When Elrod coached at Wake Forest, he was co-coordinator of the passing game. His other co-coordinator, Lonnie Galloway, now works on Petrino’s staff."

i'd be interested in hearing the other side of this. embarrassing for WF of course, but this makes Louisville look really, really bad too.

Because Louisville is the only other school being associated with this I'm going to guess that Elrod has been feeding Galloway the game plans then Petrino got wind of it and reported Elrod. We'll see if Galloway gets fired too but he can very easily plead that he just got the information from casual friendly conversations with Elrod instead of something more specific.

Could be. But Petrino isn't exactly known as Mr. #Ethics. I imagine there'll be plenty of ink spilled on this. Maybe BITB Jr. can make a name for himself digging deep into this sports story.

Lousiville AD Jurich is saying Galloway passed it along to D coaches, but because Wake didn't use the plays then he's sorry this is a distraction for Louisville's bowl prep.
However, this is bullshit because Wake knew they had the plays before the game. Most are reporting that Wake didn't run any of the plays because they knew Louisville had them. Andrea Adleson is reporting Wake tested them with 1 play/formation and Louisville played it perfectly, so they knew Louisville planned for the plays and scrapped the rest.

From the New Revised Razorbacm Bible: "11There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs (razorbacks) was feeding. 12 So the demons (VA Fech) begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs (arkiehogs), and the herd of about two thousand rushed down to the sea and drowned."
Dang demons.

Recap?
With like 6 minutes left Michigan scored 15 points in 3 minutes to take the lead for the first time. Florida state had a long kickoff return and scored to go up by 3. Michigan blocked the PAT and returned it for 2 points to trail by one. Then Florida St held on and won by 1.

And on that kickoff return the guy almost took a knee, panicked, took a quick look around then decided to return the kick. He ended up returning it 70 yards to give FSU great field position.
Amazing game.

The highlight of the Peach bowl was Saban losing his mind as they had multiple delay of game penalties. Lane might of actually been fired at halftime. Kiffin and Sark are Norm Chow disciples and prolly have a ton in common

Maybe it's part of the make up of a division 1 coach, but he seems very confident that he is "the guy" that makes things work wherever he is.
He also appears pretty entitled. Maybe that comes with his intelligence of the game too. Don't know.

Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports "general managers around the league have told those close to (Oklahoma junior RB Joe) Mixon he won’t get drafted" if he declares for the 2017 NFL Draft.
He'll be back
-
Unless the Chiefs, Patriots and Raiders don't have draft picks, Mixon will absolutely get drafted.
-
There might be heat on Mixon right now, but no way come April someone doesn't draft him. I'm sure it won't be early, but a guy with that talent will get drafted. Especially considering what Tyreek Hill has done and kept a low profile off the field since coming into the league. Besides, he doesn't necessarily sound welcome back in Norman. Didn't Stoops openly say he'd have been off the team if Stoops had to do it over?
-
I have draftnics so much, of course Mixon.would get drafted, what the hell are we talking about. LOL at the thought of 30 different NFL front offices passing on a guy who punched a girl three years earlier. If that is the standard of behavior half of the league, including coaches and front office personnel would be looking for work.
-
I agree but 30 NFL gms (or owners) all turned down Ray Rice's offer to donate his entire salary to domestic abuse charities.

Ray Rice was also a running back past his prime who would've made a marginal difference to any teams running game. Bad publicity wasn't worth the minor gain.

Tyreek wasn't captured on film assaulting a woman. That's, weirdly, a big deal for the NFL.

If Ray Rice would have actually been able to help a team he would have been back in the NFL. Dude is like 85 in RB years and slow as crap.

I agree but 30 NFL gms (or owners) all turned down Ray Rice's offer to donate his entire salary to domestic abuse charities.
I'm not sure how what Mixon did is any worse than what Tyreek Hill did.
video.
and yes mixon will get drafted, but please (and im not a kc fan) dont compare the two, hill has at least kept his nose clean was kicked off his college team and went to juco while making things right going to counseling and not being a rough ridin' douche. mixon hit another girl (per sources) and tried to fight a meter maid, hell he only apologized because his coach made him.

It's on tape.
Hill/Hardy got second chances because there was no tape. Mixon/Rice got second chances before their tapes came out.
Reality TV makes for great moral outrage.
-
Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon will forego his final two years of eligibility and enter the NFL draft.
Mixon had a monster two years at Oklahoma, averaging an eye-popping 6.73 yards on his 301 career carries. That was, of course, after he was suspended the entire 2014 season for domestic violence, of which a shocking video was released last month. Mixon is an early-round talent who will probably go undrafted because of his troubled past.

I just don't think there is any way he goes undrafted, that seems like a huge and unnecessary risk for so many talent starved teams. It's better for him to not get drafted, since he isn't going early, so he can pick his location. He clearly different from other undrafted free agents because he's going to get a contract.

Yeah, he went to Dallas and was late to practices and meetings and had conflicts with players and coaches; not to mention he managed to embarrass the Cowboys more than once with public comments.

awful 1.5 quarters from Clemson offense, which included a TO and a failed 4th down conversion. In a way, they have to feel good down 7
At the same time, Bama has 40 yds on 16 pass attempts. Those 4 long runs were killers. If they could have held Bama to 2 long runs, this game might be tied....because Bama's other 17 runs have 36 yds.

Take out the word common, I agree. His eyes got him in trouble alright. He hauled ass to the line of scrimmage, but then didn't even see the Bama TE run right by him. 88 was 10 yds behind him before He knew what was happening.

Maybe common isn't the right word, but I wasn't surprised by it. Its the Art Briles Baylor concept of spreading the defense and throwing underneath bubble and now routes to the sideline. Eventually you will get the defense guessing, especially in that case with a TE there. My point is that it was great offense more than it was terrible defense. Granted, its a big defensive mistake, but its created by great playcalling IMO.

Even the big runs Alabama had early were mistakes by players not getting to the edge (first TD I think it was there was a massive hold that prevented the guy from getting outside). Basically 24 Alabama points were big mistakes by Clemson players. Sort of reminiscent of last year where Jayron Kearse made 2 or 3 errors that led to big TDs.
The success rate on your game stats post really helps tell the story of how well Clemson's defense played outside of a couple of plays.

This is true. Success rate isn't a "be all, end all" stat, but I think it does a good job of showing how well teams are running offense overall. Of course, you can take advantage of some turnovers, field position, and have a couple big plays and still have decent YPP/PPP offense, which is sort of what Alabama did last night. It was interesting to watch the teams flip as Alabama's defense dominated early, then as the game went on Clemson's defense dominated.

This is brilliant.

Can you c&p
-
Why Didn’t Alabama Commit Pass Interference on the Final Play?
An intentional penalty might have been Alabama’s best strategy to beat Clemson for the national championship. But they played it straight—and lost.
Clemson was at the 2-yard line down three points with only seconds left in Monday’s national championship when the Tigers called one last play.
With the national title at stake, Alabama still had a way to ensure its optimal scenario. So why didn’t the Crimson Tide use it?
All they had to do was commit an obvious pass-interference penalty. It was the one time all season that Alabama’s defenders wrapping Clemson’s receivers in enormous bear hugs actually would have been the right strategy. And yet the idea of an intentional penalty—like a hack in basketball—is so unthinkable in college football that a team with the sport’s most dominant coach wouldn’t even try it when it was his best shot to win the national title.
A penalty would’ve resulted in a first-and-goal for the Tigers at the 1-yard line—with enough time on the clock to run exactly one more play. Even if there were no time remaining, though, Clemson would’ve been entitled to that play because the game can’t end on a defensive flag.
But that would have left Tigers coach Dabo Swinney with a hugely risky decision in a 31-28 game: take the points for overtime, or take a shot at the national title? The former was Alabama’s best-case scenario barring a highly unlikely turnover. The latter was the lousy situation they were already in.
Taking a penalty on purpose in this situation may seem radical, but it’s actually an established football strategy that can be traced to one football’s greatest defensive minds: former NFL coach Buddy Ryan. The goal-line play is detailed in a page of Ryan’s old playbook that Chris B. Brown published on his website Smart Football. Brown called it “clever and devious.”
Ryan’s plan sent three extra linebackers onto the field to help accomplish his one goal: force the referees to throw a penalty flag. That sentiment might violate the spirit of the game and not win many friends. But it’s also a perfectly legal play—a loophole waiting to be exploited—to win games.
“We want to stop their offense from scoring, and in the process, we want to run the clock down to where they have enough time for just one play,” Ryan wrote, according to Smart Football. “So, we will stop them, get penalized half the distance to the goal, but leave them with enough time to run one play. We will then go back to our regular goal-line defense and stop them to win the game.”
Alabama wouldn’t have been able to do this an infinite number of times. But assuming it worked, they only would’ve needed to do it once. “If it happened more than once and was so blatant as to be obviously intentional, then the rules allow for the referee to award the touchdown anyway,” said Rogers Redding, the NCAA’s officiating coordinator. “The procedure would be that the referee would warn the defensive coach that if it happens again, the touchdown would be awarded and the game would be over.”
Swinney would’ve had a tricky decision if Saban forced his hand. He’s not exactly conservative, but he probably would have sent his kicking team and taken his chances in overtime, as most coaches would.
And he wouldn’t have been wrong. Clemson had already run more plays against Alabama than any team in the Saban era. Tigers coaches thought before the game that 80 plays would tire Alabama. This would have been their 100th. It was clearly working: Alabama’s defense had cracked, and Clemson suddenly had an edge.
But overtime also presupposed that Clemson kicker Greg Huegel would’ve made the biggest field goal of his life. The short kick itself would’ve been a gimme, though not a certainty: Huegel had attempted only three field goals since Nov. 12 and missed two of them.
And who knows what might’ve happened in overtime? No one now. Because instead of making an unconventional but potentially brilliant call, Alabama played it straight.
Clemson ran a cunning play of its own—a “rub” route in which one receiver essentially sets a pick for the other—and Hunter Renfrow caught the go-ahead, game-winning touchdown pass with one second left.
There were no flags on the play.
-

Some people don't get sarcasm, and they consider any perceived criticism of K-State a personal affront.
With that said, when you have a dad who has ensured that the son has a lifetime contract with K-State, and the son has been handed the keys if you will, and been appointed a significant role almost exclusively for just being the son. Then one can expect a little mockery when the son's area of responsibility doesn't perform well.

Well, successful ST coach does translate to successful HC. Just look at all the success stories.
-
I don't think anyone really thinks that Sean is HC material based on ST success.
I do think some fans are overly harsh on Sean because of his connection to Bill. It would be one thing if his STs were bad, but they have been the strongest unit during Snyder 2.0, followed closely by the offense. He deserves credit for coordinating a very good group year in and year out.

I will admit to expecting a lot from our ST, and I'm often surprised at how other teams suck so bad at them (compared to us).

Sean deserves a lot of credit I'm sure, but it seems Kstate uses more front line players on ST than most schools, and it works, but is kind of risky given our constant lack of depth.
