Title: Best wins of LHC Bill Snyder Era
Post by: CHONGS on November 29, 2016, 01:27:51 PM
10% of 200 wins is 20, so I was thinking it should be fun to try to list the best 20 wins (where best mean most impact in terms of the college football landscape and against a team that actually ended the year pretty good).   I think most would agree that the most impressive  win was OU 2003 (by a large factor), but what are the rest?  I would think that SU 97, NU 98, and OU 2012.  USC in 02 was impressive too.

1. OU 2003
...?

How about 2003 at Nebraska?  I think they still ended up w/9-ish wins, and it ended the Solich era which was probably a big deal in college football at the time.

2000 Nebraska ranks high because their fans were so convinced '98 was a fluke...they came in as a favorite.... and we crushed their dreams by a point...and represented the Big 12 North.... .... It was kinda of the beginning of the end for Solich than 2001 Colorado happened.

This and somewhat 1994 KU as well.  Mason/KU had a year's head start on building a program over Snyder/KSU.  Long lasting impact for the psyche of the respective programs.

Besides the big 12 championship in 03. Our Fiesta bowl victory in 97 was our biggest postseason win in our program.

1. 2003 OU (12-2) #3 -KC - Lost in NC
2. 2002 USC (11-2) #4 - H - Won Orange
3. 2000 NU (10-2) #8 - H - Won Alamo
4. 1995 KU (10-2) #9 - H - Won Aloha
5. 2011 BU (10-3) #13 - H - Won Alamo
6. 2012 OU (10-3) #15 - A - Lost Cotton
7. 2003 NU (10-3) #19 - A - Won Alamo
8. 1998 UT (9-3) #15 - A - Won Cotton
9. 1998 NU (9-4) #19 - H - Lost Holiday
10. 1993 OU (9-3) #17 - H - Won Sun
11. 2000 ISU (9-3) #25 - H - Won Insight
12. 1997 SYR (9-4) #21 - Fiesta

19. 2012 OSU (8-5) #29 - H - Won Heart of Dallas
20. 2011 MU (8-5) #29 - H - Won Independence
*2011 UT (8-5) #30 - A - Won Holiday

I added where the game was played and what the opponent did in their bowl game if applicable.

I would put 2012 OU higher up to #4 if only because it was on the road and I would move 2000 ISU down around 18, they were a slightly above mediocre team with a nice schedule that got smoked when they played good teams.  98 Mizz and 2000 UTenn were better, both were tough teams that lost multiple nailbiters to good teams.

Had to fix location on 2003 NU

Also it is interesting that none of the Bill's Holiday wins made this list as 99 Washington finished 7-5 and was only ranked for 1 week at #22 and 02 ASU finished 8-6, peaking at #16 in the AP poll before losing 4 of 5 to end the season.

I agree, that was big. In some ways I think "significance of wins" is almost another discussion. I went about looking at the wins focusing on quality of opponent, mainly looking at record and rank.

in the same vein destroying ATM at home in 2009 after getting blasted by TT in Lubbock the week before was pretty big to keep "the game has passed him by" from getting too loud

Also, putting a fork in the Mangino era at KU in 2009 was big imo as I do think P5 football in the state of Kansas is a zero sum game.

This is the most underrated win in the Snyder era, it's #3 overall for me. People forget how monumental of a challenge this game was. The start of the game with Ell getting into Jamal Lord's face and it finishing with Darren dragging that dude into the end zone, it was all perfect.

Technically the game finished with us giving Bill Brasky a pity safety and then, despite us spotting them two points, Bo Pellini calling Snyder a bad word for "running up the score." One of the absolute best memzys in kat football history. :Woot:

The four OT aTm game was great, and was maybe Klein's best. He just kept being amazing in OTs. 02 against MU for the north title was great, too. Sproles baby, and Pinkel obviously playing to keep it close rather than win and still getting clocked by ??? 31-0 or something.
The Minnesota game on the road in 93, one of those close wins that helped establish the program.

I can't put anything above 98 NU because I think there is a lot to be said for the psychology of losing to a team 32 years in a row regardless of what else was going on in college football at the time. That was a huge deal for the program.

2003 OU is underrated at #1, the number 1 ranked Sooners were in the conversation for being the greatest college football team of all time. 35-7 was unreal and shook them to the core and felt unbelievable after what they did to our 2000 season.  That win would rank high on a national list

LHOFHCBS beating Texas in 2010 is one of his BEST wins imo.  Started Klein on Senior Night in front of Coffman.  Didn't pass.  It was a great one to watch from the student section.  Someone from Borck Bros resized Mack's clownsuit in the locker room afterwards.

USC wouldn't make my top 5, it was fun at the time but non conference games don't mean nearly as much to me. Also 2000 NU didn't feel as big to me at the time because of how monumental 98 was. I expected to beat their asses, it was a different feeling.

^The top 4 in some order on any list.  #5 would depend on who's ass you enjoyed beating the most

USC wouldn't make my top 5, it was fun at the time but non conference games don't mean nearly as much to me. Also 2000 NU didn't feel as big to me at the time because of how monumental 98 was. I expected to beat their asses, it was a different feeling.

I think 98 NU and 03 OU are in a class by themselves.  The other two aren't at that elite level, but I can't find any game that I would put above them.

Snyder has only won 4 games against teams that finished the season in the top 10. seems kinda shitty. Did Ron Prince have any?

To be fair, potential wins over end of season top ten is pretty small too.  Nobody we played this year would be top ten if we beat them.

It's kind of hard to lose to K-State and not fall out of the top 10.

Not so much of a best win, but as for memorable, last years Iowa State game was about as memorable as they get.  It was Paul Rhoades best win, not Snyder's.

Damn!  He trippin' so hard fans are gonna think he done fell off!

Exactly. We've only had a few top 10 teams of our own. We would never be afforded the bullshit that happens now with Big 10 and SEC teams where two top 10 teams play and then the loser drops one or two spots. Even when we're good pundits act like losing to K-State is some horrible occurrence.

03 OU and 98 NU are unparalleled. 95 KU was my personal favorite though.

As a small town SW KS kid I did not have a preference between KU and KState in 95.

It was my first K-State fan experience. I decided about a month before that game I was going to K-State. Day before the game I went to RTs Sporting Goods in Garden City and got a K-State new era track suit. Me, my gf, and my future K-State roommate ate some Bionic Burger during that game and EMAWed our faces off.

I moved to Manhattan as a 6 year old in '92 when my parents were attending KSU for their PHDs.  Lived at the closest Jardine apartment to the stadium where it was right next to the parking lot of the stadium.  For the next 8 years, I would sneak into every home game (football and basketball) and watch my favorite cats play.  Thank God it was a different time back then and kids didn't need 24/7 supervision.  Basketball games were fun too because they always gave out free pizza, and who's not going to give free pizza to a hungry 6 year old.

Also went to elementary school with Whitney Snyder, and she'd have the football players come to the school to sign autographs and stuff, which was awesome.  First football player I met was JJ Smith.  I remember him signing my trapper keeper :)

Then went to KU instead of KSU because KSU did not have the program I wanted to major in.  Nevertheless, while at Lawrence, I could only cheer for KSU and only be a KSU Fan.

A windy day and, if I recall correctly, Eichloff missed some crazy ass long FG attempt just before the first half ended.
