I wasn't really aware that thermastats and smoke alarms were that big of a deal. I was probably just going to accept whatever ones they slapped up there.

I would honestly look at a t-stat with an app or internet connectivity.  I think the nest is really cool because of its learning features and everyone I've heard has said they are very intuitive to use.  Most others have multiple layers of programing to work through which lead to generic programming.

The bad thing about the Nest C0/Smoke detectors is the cost versus shelf life.  Sure they do some cool stuff, but most don't need to spend money on stuff like that.

If you are at all interested in the Nest thermostats, try to make sure the contractor installs the standard ones in a good place where the Nest motion detector will work well(kitchen/hearth on 1st floor - somewhere in the master bedroom or hallway that you will walk by when you are upstairs).

My thermostats are in the formal dining room  and on a wall that the door to my master bedroom door blocks unless we are asleep :bang:

I have tens of thousands of dollars into my dogs.  I'm willing to spend $100 on a CO detector that can turn off my furnace so that I don't come home to very very sleepy puppies.  I can see how it's not worth it for people that don't have pets.
Since it will be conforming to UL2034, your dogs will be very sleepy before you get the alarm.

After some research, you're wrong.
Nope. I'm quite correct. I've been an opponent of UL2034 for some time.

https://community.nest.com/thread/2810

In order to comply, it can not alert below 70ppm.

70ppm is not lethal dumbass.  Most people won't even exhibit symptoms at that level.  Perhaps I should have told you I'm a world class athlete with pecs that can dance and dogs that can run to the moon and back.
But it is lethal at long exposures. You seem like a smart dude. Do some research into low level CO monitoring and low level exposures. Let's not clog this thread. Feel free to drop me a PM.

Big HVAC is perfectly happy with UL2034. I'm not. :-)

Ok you could have like 3 or 4 Protects and one cheapie low level and you're covered.  Your assertion that 70ppm would kill a dog is flat out wrong.

How much more is the composite?  I only have it for a couple steps down to a patio but it has held better than the rough cedar that forms the pergola above said patio and hasn't needed staining.

the idea of composite is nice now that they've workied out the kinks, but i still couldn't make myself spend the money.   I'd go redwood if you want to leave natural, or treated structure and planks with cedar trim if you are okay with a semi or solid stain.

and cement board siding over stucco in this climate.  and if by stucco you really mean EIFS, then even more so.

I don't know what the price difference is, but my deck has composite and it's awesome, doesn't fade (quickly), don't ever have to worry about getting splinters, never worry about lil raquetcat getting splinters, and it feels super elite on my bare feet when grilling

when you get your garage door installed, ditch the metal rollers and go with a nylon or urethane wheeled roller, ESPECIALLY if you have a living space over your garage.

siding looks like crap.  stucco can look ok, but it normally looks like crap.  to have it look good costs more and it's more prone to cracking.

if i was building a house from scratch i wouldn't use either.

the composite is about $8 more per sq ft and we are currently working with a 14x14 deck and about 20 steps. deck will be covered if that matters in the decision.

homes in the area are a mix of the two and some with all brick exteriors. we don't want to pay to brick the entire thing. we will have rock on the front only.

Composite or wood would be a tough call for me. I would probably end up choosing composite. If you go wood, make certain to have somebody stain and/or seal it at least every other year. It will last a lot longer if you do that.
