i looked this up over the summer.  the only difference between an asylee and a refugee is their location.

Relatives of US citizens/lawful permanent residents would probably be the most common basis.

But you don't really think these folks are on this journey just to get to the border, take a ticket, and retreat back to Central America for a few years (decades?) while their relatively unimportant claims are processed, do you?

They don’t know what rights they have under US or international law. All they know is that almost anything is preferable to keeping their family where they are. If someone explained the asylum process and legal standard yeah, I think they’d probably gladly go with a visa application option if given the opportunity.
