VT is off.
Football Schedule Update
When our nine-game conference schedule pattern begins next year we will of course have five conference games at home and five on the road in alternating years. As we work to have the right balance each season, we have reached a mutual agreement with Virginia Tech to cancel that series, originally for 2014 and 2016, without any financial penalty to either school. We are still on track to have our full 2011 schedule in place and announced in the near future. I appreciate your patience!

Bummer.
Probably for the best. I cry inside when I watch them because that's what we would have been if Snyder would have been less of an ass to the media and played Thursday night games on ESPN.
Cest la vie.

 I hope we keep Auburn

Snyder is such a pussy.

Old Saggy Pussy.

I would like to see them in BSFS, but at the same time we can take a payday and get a win from someone else.

We should schedule UNLV, San Diego State and Key West College every season for our non-con slate

We should join the MWC.

I'm assuming the goal is 7 total home games every year.

We should join the MWC.
But then we can't make that our noncon, dumbass. We obviously belong in the WAC.

eff you. I pushed my plate aside and had all the conference listings on my drafting desk before posting. I know what I'm talking about. Guaranteed Vegas/westcoast trips every year coupled with east coast trips or MHK 1-aa poundings for the offseason.

yes. but with more florida schools involved.

Pretty much mirror image programs. I'll always have a soft spot for VT.

I was reading that they may require 1 neutral site game in conference and make it 4 home conference games per year. I'm thinking this is to accommodate Jerry Jones basically.
Texas-Oklahoma
Texas A&M- Oklahoma State
Texas Tech- Baylor
Iowa State- Kansas State
Missouri- Kansas
3/5 games in Jerrydome.

This would've been cool because it'd have meant I wouldn't have to see Havs at Manhattan Town Center ever again, but he'd just come back for more EMAW non-con games. Because he loves KSU. Loves us.

forage for rumination: currie made martin schedule newman in lieu of the wsu scrimmage to help pay for snyder's pussy buyouts.
fball good for kstate bball indeed! lmao at kstate men's hoops.

With CC back, I have a question. What are the odds 2016 gets rounded out another FCS/MAC/Sun Belt team? Is there a reason why when Miss St wanted 16/17, ADJC said "no, we have something lined up" then schedule 17/20 Vandy and left a hole in 16? Did something else fall through for 16?

We need to pick up a team that's a P5 meh team. I know not sexy but just being realistic.

Serious question. Is there a reason we couldn't try to schedule KU as the P5 meh team? Baseball has done this in the past, alternating between the school that holds the conference home game and the other team gets the ooc home game. Not sure if there is a rule preventing this in football. If not KU maybe another Big 12 team, like ISU?

2016 Kickoff Classic. Have to move Mo State game. Against SEc pud like Georgia.

I realized our strategy is to do one of two things:
1. Taking whichever of SMU/Rice that Baylor cancels for that game or
2. See if UAB starts back up in 2016 and schedule them.
-
Yeah, the plan for UAB is to be back in 2016. Let's do that!
-
honest question? how much do dumpy schools get for being part of their dumpy conferences and would they make more by going independent and just scheduling 12 p5 games a year?

Colorado!

has to be a team with an opening in 2016, which makes it slim pickings

We already have Missouri St. lined up, mich. We'll have to see who's available September 10th or September 24th.

stanford has the same open week as we do.

Our two openings are Sept 10 and 24... Army has an opening on Sept 24. Would be perfect.

Damn! Colorado already has 3 non con games for 2016, including @ Michigan.

Bill will never let that happen again after 2009. More like, Currie will definitely make sure that never happens.

My wish list would be San Jose St, San Diego St, or Tulane. All would be fun September road games if we had to do a 2 for 1. Unfortunately all three are unavailable for 2016.
Northwestern would also be great.

who should we play next year? the following big 10 teams currently have FCS opponents scheduled in 2016 that will need replaced, because the big 10 just ruled they can't play FCS teams starting in 2016.
Maryland
Michigan State
Rutgers
Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota
Northwestern
Purdue

If you're scheduling a softy either way, may as well be a shitty P5 team. But yea, if it's supposed to be a premier ooc, you gotta step up a little.

not if you can get a 2 for 1 with a softy. We aren't getting anything better than a home/home with a shitty P5.

Can't disagree. I don't follow these things super close but a lot of people talk about how it's hard to get 2 for 1 deals anymore. :dunno:

I want Purdue to eff with Gene.

It's no FCS going forward. They can still play them in 2016 if they've already signed the contracts. They are starting 9 conference games in 2016, so they announced the 1910 plan "starting" in 2016 to coincide with the new conference schedule. Those teams aren't canceling their FCS games for 2016. Their commish gave a good sell on the 1910 plan starting in 2016. What he really meant was they're starting the implementation of the 1910 plan in 2016 with the 9 conference games and no new FCS contracts signed going forward, but it won't be fully implemented in 2016.
Currie royally crap the bed when he passed on Miss St in 16/17 then couldn't secure the Atlanta kickoff game in 16, which was taken by UNC.

Emo, that is a pretty good summation of cat football. I am dead serious that we will beat Stanford on our way to a national Championship in LHC Bill Snyder's final year.

I would love to do a series with either Illinois or Northwestern, with the road game at Soldier Field. We could play in Arrowhead for the return trip, especially if it's vs. Illinois.
A series with Minnesota (Claeys) wouldn't surprise me either.
-
Illinois has Virginia, KU and Duke on their schedule from 21-26, so we will see if they want a real P5 team or not, Northwestern is wide open from 2020 and on, but I don't think big 10 has a P5 mandate yet, do they?

Delaney announced last summer that Big ten schools were expected to schedule at least one P5 noncon game.

Iowa occasionally scheduled 2 P5 teams in the past when they had 4 noncon games but I would be surprised if they would have 2 when the big 10 goes to a 9 game conference schedule

Northwestern in Evanston with a return trip to MHK would be cool. I don't see any reason to take a game away from Manhattan to play in the pro stadiums.

Fact. They gain absolutely nothing from playing us. That's a bowl matchup I want to see though.

Kc has like the third largest St Patrick's day Parade in the country so they should play one of their "home" games at Kauffman

Doesn't that Fake Patty's Day thing that you kids invented really just extend St. Patty's Day? The state of KS is virtually green for an entire month.

isn't shamrock series against other catholic/jesuit schools?
edit: I was wrong. but still, if ND did a Shamrock series game in KC, it wouldn't be against KSU.
-
Shamrock Series can be played anywhere vs any school. They've played Wazzu in San Antonio, Miami in Chicago, and Arizona St in Dallas. Next year they're playing Army in San Antonio.
Notre Dame is undefeated in SS games -- 7-0. :surprised:
-
We need to buy out the Stanford game or convince the NFL that they should draft Christian McCaffrey in the first round where he brings anyway.
-
Our best win will be our closeish loss to them next year
-
Remember when someone said Stanford was down after our game against them was announced?
-
I really don't get how they lost two games. They'll certainly open the season comfortably in the top 10. If McCaffrey stays maybe we can get Barry Sanders Jr. to fifth year transfer here
-

A lot of smoke he's going to Oklahoma State. Obviously everyone down here is playing it up, but some reputable reporters are saying they're hearing from reputable sources that it he does leave, OSU is the clear leader.

KSU has a pretty good record against Heisman winners. At least that is how I am currently talking trash to Stanford fans.

Iowa is rough ridin' terrible. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here

The Big 10 has looked fairly awful for the most part so far in bowl games. I think there have been at least three blowout losses. Not saying the Big12 will do better, but I have not been impressed at all with the 10.

Stanford loses a lot of players this year. Next year on offense they only return their RB, TE, and RT

We only lost to OSU because we put too many DITR's out there.

It will involve a spaceship and a powercat but I can't quite come up with the joke
-
Our band would be wise to let gE come up with something for the game. CF3 could translate our vision into band dork speak and tell them all what to do.
-
Probably something farm/wizard of oz. When they come to to k-state in a few years i'd want us to do some version a football player running into a band member over and over after scoring on a multiple lateral play.

The last time i went to Boulder was our last game there. I sat in the student section and they threw popcorn at my purple shirt. I imagine by the time i'm there again, were i to find myself in the tudent section, they'd probably just assume i'm some present student's KSU0 dad-fan and forgo the popcorn. Kinda hard to excited about that.

Boulder seems like a great 11th birthday trip for my currently unborn child.

You should buy the tickets now and build them into the walls of his room to be. For his birthday, get him a framed kstate0 picture and offer to hang it. Swing your hammer and just crush some sheetrock. Agasp, reach in to the wall and pull out the tickets. Also, figure out how to buy tickets 11 years out

Or, a majority of our talent graduates in 2 years, Bill then retires leaving the waters unbelievably turbulent, Currie then hires a recently fired Tracy Claeys and we never beat Texas again, etc..
-
Yeah, I'm not sure Texas has enough talent to beat us. Road games are never easy, though.
if by 'not sure Texas has enough talent to beat us.' you actually mean they will be more talented at literally every single position on the field, then i agree with you.

Texas went 5-7 and couldn't even beat KU. The talent just isn't there.

Full dates for the non-con in now:
• Sept. 2 vs. Central Arkansas
• Sept. 9 vs. Charlotte
• Sept. 16 at Vanderbilt
• Sept 23 BYE
• Sept. 30 vs. Baylor
• Oct. 7 at Texas
• Oct. 14 vs. TCU
• Oct. 21 vs. Oklahoma
• Oct. 28 at KU
• Nov. 4 at Texas Tech
• Nov. 11 vs. West Virginia
• Nov. 18 at Oklahoma State
• Nov. 25 vs. Iowa State
If we can start the season ranked, there is a very real chance, with that schedule, that we'll be 6-0 and ranked in the high single digits/low teens going into the OU game.
Maybe a Gameday possibility depending on our rankings at the time.
-
possibly, Michigan at Penn State is that weekend
also, Bama-UT

kinda liked the idea of a bye week before the vandy game. that won't be easy.

lol, if we can't beat vandy because we play charlotte the week before (week 2), fold it up now
-
I'm surprised Scott's not more pumped about that week off between Baylor now. Those world beaters are coming in hungry.
-
Also, i'd rather play a couple of rummies before that game to gain some momentum. I hate the idea of us playing a FCS team, then taking two weeks off before facing Vandy on the road. No thanks.

One can hope, but I do think that is a strong possibility assuming we're both undefeated going into that game.

or like, what if they move that Vandy game to the following Thursday? 11 days of prep for Vandy, 8 for Baylor.

nurrmind, Vandy plays Alabama that next Saturday.

Such a tough draw for Vandy, going to have to play the National Champ and the runner up back to back weeks :Chirp:

The wrench being thrown into a national championship run is not having a bye week to prepare for Vanderbilt.

I think we'd get it if both us and OU are undefeated. Anything less than that, prolly not. There are some other name match ups so I'm taking some liberties assuming those games aren't also comprised of two undefeated teams.

I really really hate this.
-
Let's schedule Nebraska and Colorado and Missouri every year for non-con (if we get to the point where we don't care about going to bowl games).
-
I really really hate this.
why?
I will never understand the KC/Missouri fan effect. Like even if you don't like them more because you interact with the more, Mizzou is not a very good program and is SEC.
I have come to understand that people west of KC hate Nebraska more, but that makes tons more sense to me anyway, they were a much better program.
-
Mizzou was never considered a rival by anyone until Prince couldn't beat them. Still love the game.
-
I don't view them as a rival. But I do hate them for leaving the Big 12 (right up there with Nebraska).
I look at our agreement to play as allowing Missouri to have their cake and eat it too. If you want out of the Big 12, fine. But don't call us when your KC presence starts suffering.
We already have scoreboard on them. Let'em burn.
-
We signed a 2 year agreement with Colorado too and they were a much bigger rival than Mizzou.
-
I really really hate this.

I just left a conference today with Nebraskans, Iowans, Kansans and Missourians. Not kidding, in two days I was party to three different Missouri vs. Kansas conversions, and this was before this news
-
Summer 2010 left a lasting impression on me. I hate everyone who put us through that. I hope all of their universities shut down.
-
We signed a 2 year agreement with Colorado too and they were a much bigger rival than Mizzou.
I don't think rivalries can be one way. Unlike KU and Nubb's fake dismissals of a K-State rivalry, Colorado truly didn't care about us any differently than any other conference school not named Nebraska. They barely cared about Nebraska,.
-

While you were eating at the Olive Garden with Kirk Schultz, some of us were worried we were going to have to add teams like WVU and TCU to save the conference.

For the record I wanted WVU and Louisville. FYDB.
-
what was missouri supposed to do, say no to the sec? I mean, really?
-
I don't like this because I never really cared about Mizzou. My whole life, they were by far the most boring B12N opponent to me. They were always just there.
-
i love to play and hate missouri, what is wrong with you weirdos?

I really really hate this.
Beat Mizzou. Win more STL recruits. Sean dominates. Our future.

Nostalgia, man.

The CU fan base may have not considered it a rivalry, but the CU/K-State game usually meant something during the DoD. The only Mizzou games I can remember mattering were 98 and 03.

This is where I'm at too. They left, let them rot in the eSECpn
-
i'm going to like it if we win and dislike it if we lose
-
I think it's pretty beta to still be salty with them since they ended up sucking. Like, we won, who cares, lets move on. Mizzou, Nebraska, Colorado, and A&M are all dog crap and they know it. Might as well take advantage of their shittiness now. :dunno:
-
my board name is mocat and I am 100% for this. Will be v fun

Only betas worry about looking beta

Missouri left the conference for their second choice and let the chips fall where they may for the remaining B12 institutions. I'm not saying we need to hold a grudge forever but eff them.
-
Yeah, I've been saying eff them since they left as well, but it just feels so long ago these days. Plus, knowing the squawks will be butthurt about it makes me giggle a bit. They are the first ones to play a member who left the conference (Colorado & Nebraska in bball) so that will be a fun talking point moving fwd.

The Border War Kickoff Classic played every single year as the first game of the season at Arrowhead and we have like a giant festival the day before and we really ham up the history of the rivalry. And we call them slavers. And they call us 'taters. And that's our thing. And we do it for Basketball the first game of every season as well at the Sprint.

I don't think anyone has. He does look a lot like M. Bison. If this Nebraska corps of cadets school doesn't have him on some sort of a segway that moves in the opposite direction as he leans so he can slide kick up and down the sidelines, that's a missed opportunity, imo.

So is MSU, but yea. What other week two match ups are there?
-
Just sucks. Miss St. finished the season ranked last year, they'll start off ranked this year, and it's a Big 12/SEC match up. I thought that would still appeal to people.
-
I don't think ESPN necessarily fills the 11 AM slot with teams it believes will be unappealing. Haven't 11 AM games been a big gripe OU fans have had recently?
-
lol 11am on ESPN is not small time you dweebs

everything is small time compared to a 7 pm appointment with gus

Yea, definitely there' s a handful of games better than MSU/KSU...there weren't a lot though (IMO).

It's going to be so hot for MSU and UTSA.

Those players from Mississippi are about to taste some real heat.

You haven't experienced heat until you've experienced semi-arid heat.

Just did some quick math and it looks like the air in Manhattan only has about 91% of the oxygen content as Starkville MS. Translation: those bulldogs are SOL

Absolutely still a game K-State could lose if Bill is still the coach, though.

That Nicholls State game is going to be NDSU all over again.
1. We lawl @ ku for losing to them at home.
2. We lose to them at home the next year.

K-State will pay Army a $1.175 million guarantee for the game, per the contract copy.
Why are we paying the US army 1.2 million? Seems dumb

Mizzou paid SEMO to cancel their game in 2023 and are working some big schedule change carousel in 2022 between us, them, Abilene Christian, SEMO & South Dakota. We also play Mizzou in 22/23. I have no idea what the end game is here.
-
Huh, weird, but as long as we keep our Mizzou games intact I don't really care how the other games vs non D1 schools go.
-
We should only play fbs schools.
-
My first thought is they are moving dates around to move our games with Mizzou to Arrowhead, but even that doesn’t make much sense since nothing is schedule for Arrowhead this far out.
-
Boo. Neutral site games are incredibly lame, no matter the geography, location, or who's playing. I would 100% rather play a home and home, no matter how much money's on the table.

Yea agreed. Might be fun in a RRR scenario where it's packed and evenly split though.

I've always been curious how the ou-texas game stays neutral being played in dallas at or during the texas state fair.

Dallas is basically equidistant between Norman and Austin, and the tickets are allocated.

Disagree. A neutral site have against a fun opponent is waaaaay better than playing some boring rummy.
-
Playing Mizzou at Arrowhead would be fun. Playing a neutry down in houston or dallas or something would almost certainly suck.

mizzou in arrowhead: fun neutral game
Stanford in Dallas: shitty neutral game

I know. I think the vibe of everything else but what’s within the stadium walls would be pro-texas. But maybe dallas people look down on both sides and leave town for the weekend.

I don't care what happens as long as it looks good on tv

Yes!

As someone with no skin in the game, I prefer KSU games at neutral sites. Or away. Just anywhere else so I don't have to see that fugly home turf on TV.

Did the Stanford game get moved to a neutral site, or are they still just talking about maybe moving it?

You heard it here first, folks. SkinnyBenny would hate it if K-State played in the National Championship.
-
There is something special about kicking the crap out of a big time football program on your home field. Winning a game at Arrowhead just isn't the same.
-
Is the assumption that if a game is neutral site then the general public will think it's a bigger game than it is and it will drive up TV ratings?

It’s also worth mentioning that season ticket sales are on the decline at K-State, and it’s harder than ever to get students to show up for home football games. Maybe something new would spark some interest. The Wildcats haven’t played a neutral-site game in the regular season since 2010.
K-State hosted Mississippi State in a highly anticipated game last season and ESPN put it at 11 a.m. A sellout crowd wasn’t in attendance. The odds of a prime time slot are higher in Arlington or Kansas City.
A seven-figure payday (some neutral sites are paying teams as much as $4.5 million right now) for moving the game would also be something to consider.
One more thing: Alabama starts the season at a neutral site every year and that strategy has worked out for Nick Saban.
Of course, the atmosphere would be much better at home and moving the game to a neutral site probably makes it harder for K-State to win. But you asked me to try and make you feel better about the possibility, so there you go.
For what it’s worth, I think K-State is eyeing AT&T Stadium for the Stanford game. That site is likely to offer the most money and national exposure. No deal is in place or even close to being done at this point, but I get the feeling they want to make it happen.
If they move a game to Arrowhead, the better opponent seems like Missouri. They have a home-and-home series coming up. That would work just as well with both games in KC.

I'll be very :curse: if we play Stanford anywhere but home. Particularly since we gave them a home game.

I know when I turn on a neutral site game and see 79% empty seats, it screams big time game to me and I definitely stick around for it.
-
you old ballz people need to retire to the old person’s homes because people just don’t want to go to games anymore
the best thing for the cats is to play stanford in dallas sorry if you olds can’t figure out how to turn on your television to watch it. my bad. not really. doesn’t matter since half of you can’t even read online words

I would assume part of the reason for declining season ticket sales and fewer students was due to Snyder fatigue and the gawd awful boring football.

-
Hell yeah! Allstate Kickoff Classic at AT&T Stadium!
-
Sigh, I guess I "get" it, but we keep putting so much money into our home stade/Manhattan and here we decide to not use it or give it back to the community. We haven't played 7 home games in like forever, and everything could use the boost after last year. Just, kinda pissed about it.
-
Sorry, was meaning 8 homes games.
-
yeah 8 home games is good for a lot of reasons. the team sucking and needing all the help it can get being one of them.
-
how much money we talking here?
-
how much money we talking here?
each gameday is pretty significant for MHK and that much more significant after we lost stampede. I used to remember the number through the chamber but don't anymore.

somewhere exactly half way between 2 and 3 mil. tickets on top.
-
Holy moly! Let's sell all our home games!
-
Yeah, and after last year, especially after last year, those business could use every damn dollar. The more I think about it the more upset I kinda get. We basically traded marginally more national exposure for this game (and really, more like we gotta win now or else who cares) and some money that only the AD gets for a couple mil for local businesses and exposure directly to Manhattan.
-
how much money we talking here?
each gameday is pretty significant for MHK and that much more significant after we lost riding itself of stampede. I used to remember the number through the chamber but don't anymore.
-
We don't even gain extra exposure. Stanford at Kansas State in the first weekend of the season is a prime time matchup regardless of the venue.
-
how much money we talking here?
Hotel losses for moving the game will eclipse 6 figures. Between lodging/state/local/development district taxes, that alone will probably cost the city $20k in tax revenue. The hospitality industry is just killing it right now so NBD
-
i don't even know that the AD is getting paid to move it but i assume that he is. if you're the athletic dept, are you worried more about the town or your own bottom line?
the city's businesses needing money isn't gene's fault, every business (of which our AD is one) needs money right now
-

this is IRL the AD's position (and the answer is 2.5 mil)

Excited to see the Cats in Arlington! Of course I live in the Dallas Metro. Understand the impact of taking a game from Manhattan, but this is a unique opportunity and we do have 7 remaining home games. Also, if there are still seating restrictions in Manhattan then this is a big help to the budget. Of course, big games in Manhattan with a full crowd are AWESOME!!! Main thing is to WIN the DAMN GAME!

Why not just do this for all of our games? We could travel the country like the Harlem Globetrotters, netting an extra $1.5 to $3 million per game, and not have to spend a dime on maintenance.

If this isn’t extremely limited capacity I may try to make it. 6 hour drive is a lot better than 15

Is it possible to hand out tax breaks for every event held in the area that provides economic stimulus to hotels/restaurants/bars? Or maybe to achieve tax breaks he is required to host "x" amount of events per year?
That being said if this is held in a post-COVID world there could be a solid 40k fans. I'm sure that is decently profitable.

I'm very curious about this as well. Kurtz says KSU is being paid $2.8m. Rusty indicated above that it's the Cowboys paying it. What do the Cowboys get for their $2.8m that justifies that price?

Has to be TV or something, or maybe the booze sales that KSU doesn’t get at scale like jerry world will.

So this game is no longer part of KSU/Big 12's TV rights, and it'll be on whatever station buys it from the Cowboys?

I am pretty sure KSU retains 3rd tier rights for non con games but I could be wrong on that. I suppose they could sell those rights to the Cowboys for some of that revenue increase.

that makes it more feasible, but there's still a weird gap here. I don't think booze would make the difference, but it might!

I don't get it. If Jerry Jones knows how to make enough money to profit off paying us $2.8m for this crap game, I guess we can give up this one game to learn the secret and start doing that. I see unsold-out games at KSU stadium broadcast on ESPN adjace channels at 11am with retractable hoses being the featured advertisers.

MIR will likely come along at 3 a.m tomorrow to give us the real scoop

What should we spend 2.8 million simoleons on?
Probably should buy a bunch of catering from local businesses for the athletes

MIR will likely come along at 3 a.m tomorrow to give us the real scoop
I'm also curious about how this game being played in Arlington achieves exposure and recruiting benefits. Is the theory that the game being played in Texas will make recruits there aware of our existence and/or that they'll go to the game and be interested? Is it a thing where we can give local recruits tickets or access and that's a cheap way to recruit compared to getting them to KS?

Think of all of those potential recruits we can reach, but then be too scared to actually pursue.

of course it will feel like a home game.
not surprised that the media continues to draw parallels between the jerry dome and bsfs either

LOL, I slept for literally 90 minutes last night, no chance of seeing 3 tonight.
-The $2.2 million dollars that K-State will net, in my opinion, isn't worth the damage to the fan base and local economy. I get what Kurtz is saying but the town and university have an obligation to each other, especially in places like Manhattan, Stillwater, Ames, Morgantown, Pullman, etc. In addition to this that $2.2 million dollar net is likely a little high given this would have been the first game that replaced non premium seats with bigly premium seats.
-Our budget in non COVID years is now over $80 million dollars, $83 in 2018-19 iirc. There are places and ways that the $2.2 million could really go a long way. You heard about those athletic departments cutting programs, not K-State of course because we don't have extra sports to cut, anyway those programs cut generally saved $2-$3 million annually depending on the school, Iowa saved $2 mil by cutting their programs, Stanford saved just over $3 mil. For us that money is just going into the general fund, nothing is really being saved. To me, the juice is definitely not worth the squeeze, especially when you're trying to get season ticket holders back, cutting that game doesn't help. I do wonder if some of the huge money donors leaned on gene to do this, we have a lot of money coming from Texas to the athletic department, it's worth a thought.
-Jerry gets the money from concessions and parking which is a rough ridin' ton of money. The money we are getting, outside of the ticket revenue is essentially from the title sponsorship of the game. We don't have our own third tier media rights anymore when the conference started the ESPN+ deal, essentially all the teams in that deal split that money. FYI our third tier football game will be the Southern Illinois game, The oscar Bowl! Anyway, this game won't net Jerry as much money as the other opening week classics, this will be more like those Tech vs. Baylor games they played there that had like 35,000 fans there. He'll still make money though, crap they have boxing matches in there.

This is basically why it is pissing me off so much. I get Kurtz and others being all "well this is great for AD department, win win for them!" but the goddamn city takes it on the chin. I think it's laughable for him/others to insinuate there won't be an economic impact of that the other games will be able to pick up.
IMO if this upcoming season was after a normal year (not 2020) I would be upset but definitely keyed down a lot, we've been operating at 6-7 home games for over a decade so 7 games is "normal" for a year. But man, after last year, losing 2 home games, losing so many people due to restrictions, like, come on guys, read the goddamn room, don't sell your hometown down the river.
-
I think this partnership between K-State and Allstate could pay HUGE dividends to both the university and the city of Manhattan for a long time into the future.

I wonder what Allstate pays, and why.
That’s wild to me that the stadium will make much on concessions and parking considering they probably have to operate like they would for a regular game even though it’ll be 1/3 full.
Seems like the lesson is that KSU needs to build up its regular home games like they’re big events and be suckering companies into being title sponsors.

Yeah and how can they make that much more on parking with fewer fans than we'd have in Manhattan? I'm just baffled by this

The title sponsorship of that game will easily be seven figures. You can usually tell the level of sponsorship by the actual sponsor. Bowl game sponsorship goes from $300,000 for games like the Bahamas Bowl to $20,000,000 for the Rose Bowl. I don't know the contract but $5,000,000 wouldn't surprise me. I also don't know how that money is split for this type of game, but the network gets a cut too.
We do sell game sponsorships and have for years, I think our sponsorships go from $50,000 to $200,000 depending on the game. The game sponsor gets their logo on tickets, the game program, and extra video board signage. The game sponsor doesn't get television reads, so that's why those are much lower, even for opponents like OU and UT.

One important distinction here is that, again without seeing the contract, I think K-State only gets the ticket revenue for the tickets they sell. I'm assuming the cowboys get the money from the tickets they sell to their personal seat license holders and their premium seat holders, that's where they are going to make all of their money.
As far as non ticket revenue, when you go to a stadium, almost any stadium, the building makes back 90% of the cost of every single thing you buy. That $10 beer is a $9 profit. With parking stadiums usually get paid twice, once from the person parking their car and then again from the city or county that stadium is in. I believe parking at Cowboys Stadium for non cowboys games is $50, it's $100 a game for Cowboys games. Again, don't know the specifics of what the cowboys are doing but it isn't unusual for this type of deal. Usually this doesn't manifest itself in getting a check from the government but a reduction in rent. I believe the cowboys pay $2,000,000 in rent. If they get to double dip on parking that's usually something like a quarter per car in rent reduction.
I think my first post but this will generate similar numbers than a big boxing match would in AT&T Stadium. They keep their numbers for that stuff pretty quiet, the NFL requires them to release their numbers for NFL games. However, here in the pandemic, there was a fight in the Alamodome. That fight drew 9000, the city of a San Antonio still made almost $2 million dollars off of it.
I paid for a sport management degree to use it on a message board in the middle of the night.
-
rough ridin' lol if allstate is paying $5m for this.
And I need to see the cowboys seat license holder that’s buying a ticket to this game.

part of the AD's position on this, is that they are going to charge the same $$ for season tickets whether there are 7 or 8 home games. their position is that 7 is enough because it's like a normal season and the extra $$ to the athletic dept is worth the move. plus the excitement/branding/recruiting/"we have alumni in TX" talking points.

It’s a tremendous challenge here and I think this has the opportunity for the most lucrative title sponsorships in college football, exists here today, and it’s not, and it’s not one to be taken lightly.

What I gathered from MIR is that geico won’t pay close to that as things stand because while there’d be lizards and crap on the turf for that game, the announcers would not call it the geico dirt border war and be saying geico on tv 30 times.
Why the league can’t square that away with its tv partners, even if that meant such sponsorship money flowing thru conference hq and out to the members, idk.

i have it on good authority that the geiko gecko is, in fact, CGI. If that's true then i mean, this seems like an advertising goldmine. Just imagine, you have an injury timeout and the gecko rushes over and takes a look and says "i hope this bloke has good inshoorance" and since he's GCI like you don't actually have to let a talking gecko run out on the field so the injured player or medical staff really won't be any the wiser

By that logic, they charged the same $$ when there were 6 home games the year we went to Stanford so eff that.
I'm pretty sure that the tickets are less/more based on the number of games but the donation stays the same. The donation is the most expensive part of the tickets.

We're doing something terribly wrong if we're only netting $500k from a home game where we don't pay the opponent (or Gene is being intentionally misleading). How do we afford to pay someone like Buffalo $900k?

Well crap what?
-
arrowhead game would be more fun for us KC cats
-
They began their process of collecting season ticket donations before this was announced. Additionally, season ticket holders who didn't attend last year had their donations rolled over to this year when there were 8 scheduled games. Per the article, they clearly mislead all of those people when they knew the game wasn't happening.
-
Why not just do this for all of our games? We could travel the country like the Harlem Globetrotters, netting an extra $1.5 to $3 million per game, and not have to spend a dime on maintenance.
I still have no idea how the math works out for the cowboys/Jerry. Like WTF does he get out of it
Is it possible to hand out tax breaks for every event held in the area that provides economic stimulus to hotels/restaurants/bars? Or maybe to achieve tax breaks he is required to host "x" amount of events per year?
That being said if this is held in a post-COVID world there could be a solid 40k fans. I'm sure that is decently profitable.
how can they pay out $5.6 million with 40k fans when we net like $500k for a game with 50k fans?
https://twitter.com/jlkurtz/status/1349473249755885572
their margin is better than ours
-
Yea I think MIR outlined parking as a big one. Also since KSU doesn’t have stadium wide booze sales that’s probably another big difference.
-
They’ll need to treat this game there like minor league baseball, letting as many people as they can attend for little-to-nothing in order to make the money on parking and booze.
KSU football fans, just like for bowl games, would be wise to get their tickets from anywhere but KSU.
-
rough ridin' lol if allstate is paying $5m for this.

I said it wouldn't surprise me, they're probably paying half of that. It really depends on how ESPN is selling it to their sponsor. K-State historically has good television numbers. If this gets on ABC Primetime it will draw at least 5 million viewers.
-

Don't forget that season ticket revenue will be down this year, even if it's a season sellout. I imagine there are lots of people like me who paid for 2020 season tickets but carried them over to 2021.

This is correct, we can't provide the bang for your buck because we don't control the broadcast, therefore the exposure for the sponsor is limited. The reason why neither the Big 12 nor any other conference sells sponsorship media rights for regular games is saturation and not being able to guarantee what the broadcast window is going to be. Sure we draw a 4 million people audience for OU games but that's a gamble that sponsors aren't willing to take. Even massive annual games like OSU Michigan and Notre Dame USC don't get game sponsors partnered with the broadcaster.
-
well crap
https://twitter.com/KellisRobinett/status/1349752601210974215?s=20
My theory that our money really wants this game in Texas. ESPN wants it there too. There's a reason why these week 1 classic games are either at AT&T Stadium and/or Mercedes Benz Stadium.

If this game being in dallas adjace inspires KSU and the conference to be even slightly more creative about how to make money on home games, it might be worth it. None of the roadblocks to making more in somewhat similar ways to what we’re seeing with this game seem impossible to get through.
And like rusty said, maybe they are making more already than what gene indicated, but he made it sound less to help try to justify this move.

They can't and won't do that because it makes no sense. Your weird disdain for K-State athletics is blinding you to how much money this game will make everyone other than the Manhattan hospitality sector. AT&T Stadium has and will have much smaller events than this one will be. That stadium hosts high school football games, for fucks sake. I don't know why you keep acting like there will be 15,000 people at this game.
Also as far as the not buying tickets from K-State thing, if someone did that they would be getting them from the secondary market, those tickets come from the stadium PSL holders who you hinted in another post wouldn't buy tickets to this game.

We still do, that's not the same type of sponsorship we're taking about though. The difference between that sponsorship and the Allstate sponsorship is they get certain things from the broadcast partner, Dillons, Mammoth Turf, Pepsi, Kansas Farm Bureau, etc doesn't get the graphics, ad reads, etc. on the espn broadcast.

The amount they make in a game day definitely fluctuates. That $500,000 is what we would get from your standard non con buyout. I've seen that we get as much as $1.5 million in gameday revenue from higher profile games. K-State does a pretty good job of maximizing their game day revenue. There isn't much more we can do right now other than raising prices of everything, and we already have really high ticket prices, especially comparing them to similarly sized stadiums and profile of the school. In the 90's we had the highest average season ticket price in all of college football, we aren't there anymore but we're still firmly entrenched in the top 25 of average ticket price. Our lag in athletic department revenue is on apparel sales and media rights.

yeah I think that makes it clear that Gene is intentionally misleading folks. there's no way the Stanford game would only net $500k in MHK when there's no buyout involved.

Per K-State's 2019 financials, K-State brings in ~1.875m in revenue per home game with tickets/parking.

KSU football fans, just like for bowl games, would be wise to get their tickets from anywhere but KSU.
If the largest profit is made from parking and selling crap to people who are inside the stadium, it makes a lot of sense to get as many people parking and into the stadium as they can. For example, make sure that every possible unbought ticket is in the hands of sponsors giving away tickets and places like BBBS who'd be getting them to their volunteers who'd go for free and spend money on hot dogs and drinks (non-booze in the case of BBBS).
Even if they end up falling to more stanford fans, lay tickets out on the counters of the shitloads of taco bells in the area.

The largest profit the Cowboys and AT&T stadium will make will be from tickets of the PSL holders, corporate clients with premium tickets who are entertaining clients. Also people who get free tickets are absolutely not going to pay $50 to park. They don't care about the concessions thing, they'll just close some of the stands to keep their costs down.

Hmmm, I guess this gets back to what I thought I'd asked earlier but must've got distracted before hitting post:
How many paying attendees will there be at this game in arlington vs. how many there'd have been if it was in MHK?
Guess it must be the different worlds things, but it's really hard for me to picture a regular or even well-to-do texan that has no connection to these teams choosing to go to this game and especially paying for it, as opposed to doing other things on a long weekend. Break up the united states?

My guess is that there will be 40,000 seats sold, but the pandemic can and likely will eat into that. What will the PSL holders be doing that day. Either drinking good bourbon in their luxury seat, going to the game because it's the first week of a new college football season, or in most cases, sitting on their couch, channel surfing, and hoping whomever got their seats on the secondary market doesn't do something to get that PSL holder barred from their seats.
-

Go to a beach or lake for the weekend having not bought the ticket to begin with and having to dick around with re-selling it to some random? If a big football fan, go to their own college team's game? :dunno:

We get it man, rando west coast sports fan thinks everyone but Kansas State will lose money and regret having the game despite them already having had scores of similar events. Write a letter to the Dallas Morning News and try to convince them of your theory. I think all of these people have this figured out by now, but who knows, I'm certain you can give them something they haven't already thought about that convinces everyone this is the shittiest idea ever.

I've been trying the easy way first. And I don't have any theories I'm committed to yet, but I'm super curious about lots of the math.

At least in their talking points, they def pitch it as it being a big deal just being college football.
AT&T Stadium has announced that Allstate will be the new title sponsor of the season-opening college football game that is played annually at AT&T Stadium.
The Allstate Kickoff Classic will debut with the Sept. 4, 2021 matchup featuring Kansas State versus Stanford University.
"We're very excited to welcome a terrific new partner in Allstate as the premier sponsor of this iconic game that will kick off the 2021 college football season," Stephen Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Cowboys, said. "Here in Texas and across the country, the return of college football each year is a very special time. Because of Allstate's enthusiastic support and partnership, the Allstate Kickoff Classic will continue to be a yearly must-see event. And given all that has happened in 2020, there can be no question that in 2021 this game will have special significance as together we bring back the great fans, pageantry, history and traditions of college football as we've always known it."
Under the terms of the sponsorship, Allstate will present the matchups at AT&T Stadium for the next four years.
According to AT&T Stadium officials, the partnership between Allstate and the stadium is an expansion of their long-term support for college football, which involves team partnerships with 94 universities including both matchup teams, Kansas State and Stanford.
"Presenting the Allstate Kickoff Classic underscores our commitment to unite college football fans through iconic moments and places," Dan Keats, Allstate's director of consumer marketing sponsorships, said. "This Allstate Kickoff Classic sponsorship exemplifies how our brand, for more than 16 years, supports college football and its great fans. We are excited to join AT&T Stadium in debuting this annual game and venue as a milestone for the start of the 2021 college football season."

How many melt down about starting conference on the road?
It's pretty rough ridin' ridiculous, tbh. I'm more concerned with that stretch of OSU, OU, and ISU, and that game against Nevada isn't a joke either. This is undoubtedly the hardest K-State football schedule since any of us have been paying attention.
-
It's the best schedule I've ever seen for us. Only FBS schools and a P5.
-
It's the best schedule I've ever seen for us. Only FBS schools and a P5.
First time since 2005. But if we're talking about excitement and competition is there a real difference between Buffalo and Stephen F. Austin?
-
I think so.

Huh? The Southern Illinois Salukis are 100% an FCS team.

Buffalo has been pretty salty!
-
The left hand side of that schedule is ridic, if they make it out of that above .500 they'll murder the right hand side.

Yeah, we probably would have lost to them last year. They had one of the best RB's in the nation.
-
The only thing that's going to keep K-State from being murdered by the left side of that schedule is a healthy 26 year old Skylar Thompson.

He's going to be a sensation.
-
I'd like to see the Big 12 severely back load its schedule.
Pit all the top teams against each other as late as possible. Preseason Top 4 must be playing each other in the final two weeks of the season. Have the good teams play the crap teams early in the season. Figure the rest out from there.
And move the damn UT v OU game to Jerry World.

Who are our biggest recruiting rivals out of conference?

We don’t really beat them for recruits but Nebraska and Iowa have been who we tussle with the most for the recruits we want.

We should be scheduling as many of these fucks as possible, especially the ones we are likely to beat on the field.

For the most part, recruits don't care about this

@MakeItRain
I’d love to develop or rekindle some regional rivalries.
Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota are all great candidates
-
Imma be honest with you, recruits care about facilities and who can get them to the NFL. Unless they are some underdog and have been overlooked then they like schools like KSU.
-
Do you think Gene understands averages?
we were going to have eight home games.
"And, you know, seven is a number we've always tried to have here at home. And because we had seven, even if we move Stanford, it made a little bit easier because you're still gonna have hotels for seven games, still going to (fill) restaurants for seven games, like we typically do
...
I think there's an out year coming up, we may only have six that we're working on, but that's just kind of how the schedule fell. But with the eight game and made a little bit easier decision.

Ended up closer to 1/4 full. I wish the unmasked washes would've spread out more.
But we SMASHED the previous record for lowest attendance from the prior low of 46,138.

Old Big 8 rivals are the ones I'd must like to see. Nebraska would be great, Missouri and Colorado nice too. With OU already committed to continuing the Bedlam series and Iowa locked in the ISU home and home, I don't many opportunities there.

It doesn't bother me that much that I have to stream the game. I just wish that ESPN+ wasn't such a shitty streaming service. I really hope our next deal is with Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon.

yeah it's really bad. I don't know if it's the camera/satellite feed or what but the video quality was terrible for SIU. At least it was up the whole time unlike earlier football broadcasts.

My feed kept going back to a point in the first half where they were reviewing an interception. Even toward the end of the game, I would have to change the feed to another game and then change it back to refresh the stream. None of the other live tv I stream is remotely as bad. Even kstatehd.tv was a better service.
-
Also, I would like to think that someone like Amazon just getting into live sports would take the initiative to actually send the play by play people to the stadium. The combination of the terrible video feed, the fake forced enthusiasm from the play by play people, and the game falling apart at the end of the first half had me more angry than a college football game has ever made me feel. It's infuriating that we are going to be on that service the next 2 weeks.
-
Hulu sports feeds can be just as bad. I couldn't watch the Oregon/Ohio State game due to issues they had. I've also had the feed continually reset to a previous point in the game before and eventually have to restart my Fire box to get it to work properly again.
-
the play-by-play folks were at the game :dunno:
And they had a sideline guy with lots of gusto!

Really? It sounded to me like they were doing it remotely. They didn't seem very excited.
-
They don’t do college football games remotely on ESPN+. A+ source.

I just tried to get a screenshot of the PBP folks in the press box and cannot get ESPN Plus to work. :frown:

BYU has a home/home with VaTech I’m hoping we help take off their hands to help free up their schedule. They also gave a Hawaii series I’d take too.

Sometimes the schools themselves do the production of the ESPN+ broadcasts, sometimes ESPN does. For some reason ESPN did for the SIU game. K-State has one of the best on site production set up in America, and we usually do our own for all ESPN+ broadcasts regardless of sport.

He actually called the KU-South Dakota game a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't paying any attention and then I heard them say "Barrett Brooks" and did a double-take. He's pretty solid. Similar to Ben Leber in that he's not going to say anything to put anyone down/be mean. Just very pleasant.

Yeah, I looked it up just out of curiosity, since '96 (first Big 12 game) we played our first conference game at home in:
1996
1998
2008
2011
2017
You could through some logic pick one (or both) of the weird arrowhead years with that as well to add in, but yeah, 5 times in 25 years. It's hilariously unbalanced

It's not kinda weird, it's rough ridin' absurd and I get mad when people discuss it. It's such a statistical anamoly that there's no way it's unintentional.

With a 9-game conference schedule, it can matter. For example, KU also starts out on the road in the conference schedule and has to play 5 road games vs. 4 home games. Do they at least alternate years in which you have 4 vs. 5 home games? Obviously, I've never really cared.

I don’t recall it ever not flipping back and forth every year from a conference schedule standpoint. Simply because it alternates H/A with every school each year. Maybe back when we had the North South divisions?

Yes the 4/5 home games alternate each year. When we had divisions there were only 8 conference games.
-

Not a lot honestly. If you think momentum is a thing, then it matters some undefined, minute but mostly unmeasurable amount.
-
It is probably the BigXII trying to get back at us for winning the first ever BigXII game against Tech.
-
I like the first game being on the road. Early season losses don't matter as much as late season losses, and we are playing someone good, I like our odds of getting an upset early in the year a lot more than later, when we are banged up and our lack of depth is glaring.
-

In general yeah, my only peeve about it (and MiR discussed a bit) is how clearly lopsided it is. If over 25 years we started on the road let's say 15 times and home 10 times, even that would be "close enough" to even, but 5 times in 25 years? Just kinda insane. Not even close to even.
FTR I do like to think momentum matters, especially earlier in the season, getting into grooves helps, but probably statistically it doesn't so probably shouldn't really matter.
Side note on it all, looking it up it's interesting of those start at home instances 2 of them, the most recent, was Baylor, who we played at home for the first game.
-
I vaguely remember the cause of this when we had divisions was some Snyderism (don't remember specifics) and in order to get that the way he wanted we were willing to start on the road. I don't remember if this was just message board chatter or if it was actually confirmed by a writer somewhere.
-
I like the first game being on the road. Early season losses don't matter as much as late season losses, and we are playing someone good, I like our odds of getting an upset early in the year a lot more than later, when we are banged up and our lack of depth is glaring.
If having the first conference game on the road isn't bad, and is arguably good, then there's nothing to be peeved about. If fact, we should be happy about whatever cheyenne zulu-like manipulation we have going on in conference hq to get the benefit.
-
I don't think it makes a big difference but do think it would be nice more often to build excitement in the fanbase.
Since we have to play OU on the road next year, I'll take it early in the season while they may still be working through some transitional challenges.

We're not in the CFP discussion, late vs. early season losses aren't a factor for us. Most programs need to build momentum.

LOL, well that's a take. Let's give K-State the first game on the road, huge benefit and advantage for them.
I'm sure I've shared this story before, but I visited the Big 12 office back in like 2006. They shared how the schedules are made and there is a human element involved. Football operations input rules into a scheduling software system, rules like OU vs. UT the second week in week of October, team a gets 5 home games, etc. Then the software spits out thousands of schedules then the operations staff picks one. They consider other rules that they can't input in the software like no back to back road games in Texas for West Virginia.
-
In a season with 5 conference road games, it should be expected and maybe preferred to have the first one on the road, and not have 5 of the last 8 games be on the road.
I a season with only 4 conference road games, weird that game 1 would be on the road, but then you get 5 of your last 8 games at home. Just 3 times during the critical 2 months of the season (and when weather is more relevant) that one has to travel!
I can't at all follow why it's bothersome to have the first conference game on the road. And it's kind of loser-y to be bothered by it, as if a road game is too much to overcome.
And this all happens after a team's played 3 warm-up games, often all at home!

Lame start times and crappy network selections... otherwise known as the conference "calming the waters". Don't worry though, there will be tons of SEC and Big Ten games for everyone in the Midwest to watch. LOL
-
Now that I'm a dad, morning games don't bother me as much. Get there an hour early for a quick tailgate, head to the game with the fam, pin the kid in the suite with the others running around, watch game, beer, end of game, Kid takes a nap on the way home, home by 6. Profit!

I get that. I just get tired of being crapped on because we don't have "enough tv watchers" in the Midwest but yet somehow you can always find an SEC or Big 10 game on? If it really doesn't move the needle then put that junk on streaming media and let us watch Big XII games in the states where the teams actually are on traditional networks. Maybe some of the new blood coming into the conference will help...

We simply need to be better as a program and play better opponents. I think all three of those games are appropriately placed, even though I hate 11:00 games with the fire of a thousand suns. In the era of streamed football games, an unranked team playing South Dakota and Tulane has no business on television.

They thought they could rebuild by slimming down programming thus reducing costs then make bank on pro sports media rights. Ultimately they just weren't in the right markets to make it work. They weren't going to make enough money with the MLB and NBA in largely small to medium markets.

I want to open at BYU at 9pm MT, and then go into quadruple overtime and have BYU forfeit instead of playing at 12:01 Sunday.

this is an interesting thought experiment by Pete here. Do they fr just forefeit the game if it were to bleed over into Sunday? I'm guessing they probably have some kind of loophole that would allow it, but its still kind of fun to think about!

Here's an article from 6 years ago talking about this very thing. “Yes, the game would be finished if it pushed late,” BYU spokesman Brett Pyne told Yahoo Sports via email. “A game involving BYU that starts on Saturday will be played to its completion if it happens to extend past midnight.”

Seven weeks pass before we play TCU, and in all prior games we should be favored.
If we start ranked 15, we should be easily top 10 for that game.

And I don't want any either fwiw.
If they keep us to where we play OSU/ku/isu each year and rotate the rest I'm fine with that.
-
I think if you aren't going to play everyone, you should have divisions and at least play everyone in your division.
-
Do any of you townie insiders know when Homecoming will be?
-
I think if you aren't going to play everyone, you should have divisions and at least play everyone in your division.
I think divisions would be fine as long as we still kept the "best 2 teams play in the championship" regardless of division and not a "division vs. division championship"
-
Divisions would be fine if we rearrange the division every four years. Records of each division should have a total win record to match and consider SOS/rankings. Make them even or go with 3 pods of four. Either way, the conference should end up with the two top teams in the CCG. This should and needs to be the first part of the CFP.
-
Just have 3, 4 team pods.

You play all your pod teams, and 3 of the other two, and have it rotate with home/away and which of those 3 so you would essentially play everyone and every 4 years you have played everyone home and way, and the cycle repeats every 8 years like:
Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 Year 7 Year 8
TCU at TCU at UH UH TT at TT at Bay Bay
at UH UH TT at TT at Bay Bay TCU at TCU
TT at TT at Bay Bay TCU at TCU at UH UH

WV at WV at Cincy Cincy BYU at BYU at UCF UCF
at Cincy Cincy BYU at BYU at UCF UCF WV at WV

There is no god damned way they're putting BYU in a pod or division with the easternmost teams available. This is essentially why pods are a non-starter: you'd have to anchor each with a remote team, and you end up sacrificing a regional rivalry in the process.
What I expect they'll wind up doing is crafting a list for each team of perhaps 5 opponents that they will play every year, and rotating the other four games among the remaining six opponents. This gives the ability to optimize for travel distance and preserve rivalries.

JFC man it was an example, and I don't think pods are non starters but the way.
-
Pods would set us up pretty nicely, since we would end up with KU and ISU. Thinking long term, those are more likely to be free wins in any given season than any other combination of teams would be.
-
the word “pod” is gross
pet peeves thread?
-
Pods would set us up pretty nicely, since we would end up with KU and ISU. [...]
Yeah, you don't know that. For example, let's assume pods of four, and let's build a pod that has the eastern teams [WVU, UC, UCF]. Who's their fourth? Quite possibly ISU. Who's in BYU's pod? Probably not the Texas schools. Suddenly our pod is BYU, KU, OSU - potentially the toughest on an annual basis (for KU, anyway).
In my scenario, each team has a list of five annual "division" opponents, but the teams on that list don't all share the same list. For example, our list might have ISU and OSU, but those two might only play each other 2 out of 3 years. It allows for our traditional rivalries without consigning the geographically remote teams to a pod of leftovers.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/37820756/why-big-ten-ditched-divisions-protected-11-games
I think the big 10 got it right for the most part (No protected games for PSU is a little odd, though). They went through a bunch of scenarios with a pair of remote schools in the fold, and decided that divisions suck, and pods suck.
It was also wise not to try to assign the same number of protected matchups for every school - who would USC or UCLA care about beyond their game with each other?
If we were to steal this scheme verbatim, what are the 11 matchups in the post-traitor XII that you would like to see protected? I'm not sure there are 11.
Sunflower
Farmageddon
KSU/OSU
UC/WVU
UC/UCF
BU/BYU

Expand to 16 schools, especially adding the mountain 4 schools, you'd get to 11 easily. Also those various iterations of Texas rivalries are significantly older than most of the Big 12 ones you have listed. The Southwest Conference was formed 100 years ago and many of those schools have been playing for longer than that.

It seems our home-and-home series with Arizona will remain non-conference games

wut, ok...

Guess that's fair for last minute stuff, going to be weird, but no weirder than Zona being in the Big 12

So it won't count towards conference win totals when trying to determine who should go to Arlington?

SIAP, but has a scheduling matrix been announce for the newly constructed Big12 next year? I'm trying to figure out why this would be the case. Surely both teams could find a cupcake to beat up on a year out. Or is it simply a contract matter?

Guessing we don't want to pony up to play a random, most likely really shitty cupcake this late.

Sounds like Plumlee won’t be playing either.

Yeah saw that, sucks, but 4 weeks minimum out doesn't sound fun

Agree
disagree, guaranteeing a noncon loss for a conference member in the first 2 years of Nu Big 12 is suboptimal

It's not just finding one opponent for one year, it's finding an opponent, with that open date, who you're also willing to do a home and home series with. They also already have a FCS school on the schedule, I can't imagine there are too many FBS and P4 teams with a week two opening.
Also those power 4 home games drive much more revenue than the buy games. K-State doesn't want to give up a game that's going to sell out with a $50-$75 price point for one with a game half that price point in addition to shelling out another 6 figures to the FCS or G6 school to come in.

If we didn't beat them, they would just lose to someone else.

Oh ya. WVU is away. Think I'll visit Morgantown next fall since I'm moving back to Kentucky.

Damn just came to post that

I'd be surprised if that one ends up happening. They are going to have all sorts of scheduling issues once they join a conference.

It also makes it very interesting given we're currently slated to play Rutgers @Rutgers those two years as well.

hopefully the 2031 game is played in September, i have heard the weather is elite in the PNW at that time of year

It is! Although the further south you get out of WA, the rain/gray starts a little later in the fall.

I wish we could have rotating nonconference games. I hate that our main rival is OOC.

In that you could have more than 2 schools to play that are different? I'm sure both schools appreciate not having to think that hard about noncon
